KB941229 Cumulative Media Center update causing serious issues

The latest cumulative update for Vista Media Center stopped my system from
booting up at all, even in safe mode. Once past the initial BIOS diagnostic
my computer cuts out and restarts every time. In the end I had to boot into
the Vista DVD and perform a system restore to before the update was installed.

Any ideas on why this might happen? Most automatic updates seem to stop
something from working.

Since the update I can no longer get the Media Center to work. It starts and
then dies after about 20 seconds with a "Media Center Stopped Working" I did
a system restore and same problem. I am using an HP laptop dv9547 with 32 bit
VISTA Home Premium - there are others with this problem but I have seen NO
fix. I am in Mexico right now and use the laptop for television - HELP I need
my MTV!

Hello, I also have the same problem. My system is not booting up at all.
Before installing this last set of updates, I forgot to create a restore
point, so I cannot go back to yesterday when the updates had not been
installed. Or any date for that matter. I know there is the option to
reinstall windows, however I have many many pics of family and friends I will
loose if I do this. Is there any other option to getting windows to boot
again? I am kicking myself in the behind for not creating a restore point.
But how is it microsoft can release updates without testing them first? Do
you ever wonder if the people at microsoft are getting a good chuckle out of
all the problems they create when updates are released?

Hi there,

Backing up is always advised: also by microsoft: software is man made and as
is known mankind make mistakes.

You can repair your windows installation.

Just put your Windows cd in the cd / dvd rom drive and make sure it is made
bootable in the bios settings.

Start up from cd and follow the screen for setup, after the F8 to aggree on
the license press R for repair, you wil not loose any program functionality
or data except for all windows updates previously installled.

Hello!
I realize now how important backing up is. I found another post on here
that may be able to help. I will try it and see. If it works I will post back
with details. I did try to repair but that did not work. Thanks you for your

I had the same issue. A repair did work for me thankfully..

At first I thought it was a optional update to the ATI PCIeX driver but on
eventual successful boot found it to be the media center update.

The repair worked for me. I then had the audacity to try installing the
update again. This time I did so without a hitch and my computer is running
fine. It's a mysterious world. I still have issues with media center and my
xbox 360 though, so I'm not entirely sure what the point of the update was...

Same issue here. Tried a system restore to a few days ago when Media Center
still worked but that didn`t help. Tried installing the latest drivers for
the my TV Wonder 650, no help. Anyonw else find a solution for this?

The update shut down my broadband, hide it.
