When you have Automatic Updates turned on, the service that controls
Automatic Updates appears to bypass / ignore any proxy server settings that
are configured for the MSIE 7 client. Are there registry keys for
Automatic Updates that would force it to use a proxy server?

I see this question asked not fewer than four times since 2003 in
microsoft.public.windowsupdate, but no one ever seems to give a straight
answer to the question. If you need a workstation to use a proxy server,
then it makes sense that the background services on that workstation should
also be configurable to use the same proxy. There must be a way to do
this for Automatic Updates?

I was able to solve my problem by using the command:

proxycfg -u

from the command line of a logged in user with successfully configured proxy
settings. That command copies those settings to the computer where system
services will use it as default for their browser activity.
