I want to install XP SP3 and my automatic updates havent offered me it yet.
So I decided to go to the Microsoft/Windows Update website to download it
myself.
When I get there, I pick between Express or Custom, and it starts to check
for updates. For some reason, the update check NEVER ENDS. Ive left it for
about an hour and it doesnt seem to gain any progress. The little animation
goes back and forth but nothing ever happens. Ive also tried going to
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=5b33b5a8-5e76-401f-be08-1e1555d4f3d4&DisplayLang=en
but I get a 404 error when I click the download button.
Please help!
Thanks in advance.

I can cofirm that a 404 error is generated when clicking the Download
button. Perhaps there's currently too much traffic ... perhaps the URL
needs to be updated ? Who knows ... best bet is to wait until there a
time when there are less requests for the DL.

As to the scan for updates that never ends ... has this occurred
previously ? If not, this may also be a sign that there's too much
traffic on the Update site.

SP3 was offered when visiting Windows Update and clicking the Custom
scan button.

BEFORE you attempt to install SP3 suggest you read this, Kedama:

Yes, it actually has happened before, when I installed XP SP2 over again.

Nor Custom nor Express work. I get the same problem on each. Ive also tried
reverting to Windows update and get the same problem that I get on Microsoft
Update.

0x80010106 RPC_E_CHANGED_MODE

The above error can result from running disk and registry cleaners.
It may also be a tipoff that malware is present.

Have only helped one other person with this specific error code in the
last 7 years and it was caused by a disk 'cleaner'.
IF you've run them, then you are going to have to restore a backup of
whatever was removed at the point in time that updating at Windows
Update failed.
Otherwise, you are going to have to do a Repair Installation in order
for the system to be able to update.

How to Perform a Windows XP Repair Install
http://michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

If a Repair Install is required and IE7 is installed, then please
uninstall it from Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel *prior* to
the operation.

IF a disk or reg cleaner has not been used, then odds are the system has
been compromised by malware.
