    - Can't take it anymore! 0x8024001B error returns every day or two! I've been struggling with this for well over two years, and I'm at wits end! Currently running XP SP3 on an HP Pavilion PC, (though my problem predates SP3) and using only Microsoft-branded protections (Windows Firewall, OneCare, Windows Defender, etc.- no third-party security. Windows Update used to "break" every six months or so with the error code above, and, from help I found searching this group, as well as some guidance from MS tech support, I learned how to go into Safe Mode, rename or delete the Software Distribution folder, re-register the .dll files listed in the KB article discussing this error, and life would be good for several months. Now, Windows Update breaks, I fix it the same way as always, I get to go through maybe one night with Automatic Updates, and it breaks again after the updates install. It seems to have gotten worse since installing OneCare, but since the underlying problem has been around for a couple of years, always with the same error code, I think OneCare is just "tripping" the underlying cause more often, rather that causing a new problem coincidentally generating the same error code. I can get WU to stay working longer if I only use Windows Update instead of Microsoft Update (but when OneCare does it's "checking for updates" I think it tries to turn MS Update on.) I get so sick of fixing it, I generally leave it broken for a few weeks, then fix it and get a big pile of updates all at once and just let it break again until I notice my other PCs have automatically installed new updates. I had to fix it a day or two ago to download Zune 3.0, which hung at the "checking for updates" dialog until I fixed it- Zune software apparently uses WU to manage updates as well. Lucky me. Here's a sample from my WindowsUpdate log- hopefully this will shed some light on the problem. Is this another program "breaking" WU that I need to track down and get rid of? Or is this a "normal" MS program (like Zune or Windows Defender) that receives it's updates via WU?     - Microsoft Update fails to install. My problem is that recently when closing Office Outlook 2007 on my Windows Vista Ultimate system I have noticed that I get a message that Outlook 2007 did not close correctly and that the data file is being checked for errors. I went to Outlook's Help drop down menu and chose Office Diagnostics. After the system completed its process, I learned that Office has not been updated... When I go to Windows Update (Windows is up to date) and Click on Get updates for more products button, it takes me to the Microsoft site to Try Microsoft Update today, I click on the Start Now button, I then receive the following: [Error number: 0x8DDD0002] To install updates from this website, you must be logged on as an administrator or a member of the Administrators group on your computer. If you use Windows XP, you can see if you are an administrator by going to User Accounts in Control Panel. Note: If your computer is connected to a network, network policy settings might also prevent you using this website. Contact your system administrator for help with updates. On the newsgroups, I found a reference to: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/316524 I have performed Methods 1 thru 4, with no positive results. Method 5 results in an "access denied" message.     - Can't load Windows XP Using winxp pro sp2, intel 2800, 2meg ram,80 gig free hard drive. Yesterday auto update tried to install sp3 and failed twice so I canceled it. Used the computer for several more hours with no problem. Turned it on a few hours ago and it loads as far as the sign in screen - choice of me or administrator. It always loaded directly into window since I never set up a password - don't need one. No matter if I hit admin or myself, it says loading settings, and about one second later, it says it's logging off and saving my settings. It then goes back to the sing in screen again. I also tried guest account. I tried the F8 and every mode listed, but it still insists on a passwork. I did try every password I've ever used for anything, but no good.     - Java Problem! To whom it may concern; Several days ago windows update indicated SP1 was available for Vista. Am running Vista Ultimate x64. after installing and restarting, before boot up, message said, unable to install, reverting changes. Later on that evening windowsupdate shows updates available, not the SP1. I installed ok. The next day WU showed SP1 available So, I gave it another try, success!! Only, when I went to play a game of cribbage at gamecolony.com Logon fine but, when I tried to goto the room (it uses Java VM) IE8 (Internet Explorer quit working) tried many times with same result reinstalled VM with no change, IE stopped working. I sent report. restored Comp before SP1 update. VM works ok now. What should I do now with SP1 update. Recently DLd --Windows6.0-KB947821-v3-x64.msu.     - windows net framework 2.0 Windows frame work 2.0 is giving me trouble with installing. I have downloaded the repair tool and used it. no go, In the add/rem no there is no net framework at all. I have looked at a few blogs and have been told to download regeasy or regcure. I have both, no go.     - Can't boot Windows XP SP2 after power down while updating shutdown Hello there. I got a computer here which has been turned off while it was on the "Installing update x of x..." shutdown screen. Now i can't boot. I've tried reinstalling Windows and even copying manually the registry files of a restore point on the System Volume Information folder, but o luck. It freezes right after the mouse pointer shows up and before the Welcome screen, showing no error at all, although the pointer moves normally around the black screen. Neither the safety modes nor the "last good configuration" option are useful, so I can't boot at all. I wonder if that is some way to restore an earlier point without booting on Windows. One of the updates was the SP3. I know SP3 is causing some trouble around, but I don't think it's the problem here. What can I do about it? It's a Windows XP SP2 on a AMD Sempron 3000+, 512Mb of RAM. My apologies to those who viewed and responded to my last post. "I've been resisting the installation of SP3 because I've used automatic updates for all SP2 patches. However, many posts on this NG offer sufficient reasons to accept SP3. At last count, I have 140 Knowledge Base updates in my Windows folder. To save space on my hard drive, would it be acceptable to uninstall all these updates and then install SP3? Does anyone know of any problems this would create?     - IE7 crawls after SP3 Update Problem: I was running XP Pro SP2 with IE7 and WMP11 with no issues. As part of automatic updates, I installed SP3. Since then I noticed that IE7 slowed down drastically. Remarks: I have both IE7 and Firefox 2 and Firefox is normal. I have a very fast broadband internet and for example downloaded some ISO CD images using IE7 in just minute before SP3s. However now it wont load Microsoft update even after 10 mins. USing IE to access Google is a bit better and just manages to load. But Firefox is still very fast. Steps taken: First I tried to uninstall IE7 in the hope that re-installation would fix the issue. I found that I was unable to uninstall as the option was grayed out in Add Remove. So I did a repair install using a slipstreamed XP SP3 CD which did not contain IE7 since SP3 doesn't include it. After that, IE6 had no issues and was very fast. Automatic update kicked in and downloaded and installed a bunch of patches including IE7. So again I had the same problem as before. However, I was able to uninstall IE7 this time. After uninstalling IE7 I decided to simply patch IE6 and avoid IE7 temporarily. However after a security roundup update for IE6, the next time I used Microsft update from the start menu, I found to my surprise that IE6 was opening as a small blank IE6 Window and Firefox was opening and going to the update webpage. Clicking on the home button in the IE6 window opened the default MS page in firefox. This is the craziest thing I have seen to date... After that I uninstalled IE7 and installed IE7 file that I downloaded instead of from automatic update. This brings me back to square 1. IE7 is so slow that it is almost unusable. Firefox is absolutely fine. I cannot do any updates. Any pointers would be appreciated. At this point, I have no option but to do a repair install using XP SP2 and downgrade my system.     - Unable to Update or Remove and reinstall Windows Media Player I am using Windows XP home edition SP2 I tried to view a video clip but got a message saying that Explorer could find the Windows Media Player. I looked on Control panel and It said that the media player was installed. I tried to remove so I could reinstall it. All that happens is when I click REMOVE on the ADD/Remove programs screen, all I get is a screen that says there is an update available. I am given no further opportunity to indicate I did not want to install media player updates, but rather I wanted to remove media player. When I try to run the update I get an error message #8007F0DA with no explanation. I seem to be caught between a rock and a hard place.     - SP3 and logon/off problem This seems to have started after the XP SP3 install. Is it a known problem? On a laptop, user logon is impossible. A few seconds after clicking on the user name, the saving settings message appears, and then we're logged out again. This happens in Safe Mode as well as normal mode. There's just one active user account, but in Safe Mode it happens for Administrator too.     - 800B0100 Solution Finally Got this off a thread in microsoft technet forums Hi All, I spent 4 hours on the phone with Microsoft tech support this morning trying to get this resolved. They were able to fix it. I just I would pass along the fix that worked for us. Hopefully it will help someone else out as well. Below is the email I received from tech support after the fix: Basically an 0x800B0100 error is store corruption. Store corruption can be caused by pending CBS operations, CBS operations that never finished based on a reboot that was supposed to take place and never did, general corruption markers like bad sectors on disk, etc. Most of the 0x800B0100 errors I have seen have involved issues with customers having corruption as a result of a failed update installation. So recommending that they reboot the server when prompted would be a good best practice. Additionally, ensure that they do their role installation and removals one at a time. If a role installation prompts for a reboot, the machine needs to be rebooted before anything else occurs. Otherwise the store can become corrupted and cause issues like this. Also the following are the steps taken to work on the resolution for the issue. We tried running a System Readiness update tool which checks the CBS component corruption and got the result as one of the update KB 951978 was having issues as its packages were corrupted. So we downloaded and extracted the update KB 951978 and copied the package over to the system packages folder under %Windir%\servicing\packages and replaced the corrupted packages.     - Windows Update Server or Microsoft Update Server IP I have a lone server behind a firewall in a DMZ that is blocking all inbound and outbound traffic on port 80 and 443. I would like the server to be able to go to the Microsoft Windows Update website directly, but the IP changes everytime I try to connect to it. I can request the firewall admin to open ports to a specific IP, but not a range of IP's or a DNS name. Is there a single Windows Update Server or Microsoft Update Server IP address I can use to access all updates for Windows 2008 Server. If not a single IP, is there different port other than 80 and 443 I can use to talk to the Windows Update Servers or even a range of addresses. However, I do want to install any other updates. I checked the yellow shield icon in the corner, and it said that I had several new updates, including SP3.     - Vista SP1 - Windows Can't Check for Updates - at my wits end My Vista SP1 machine has been displaying a message that reads "Windows can't check for Updates" in the system tray for more than month. When I check for installed updates, I see this problem has existed since July 9, 2008 yet it appears at least the security updates have been downloading and installing (set for daily WU and install at 3:00 a.m.) but some other updates simply fail. Using WinXP SP3, cable internet access and Trend Micro Virus protection, if I set my PC to download updates automatically, when downloading the updates, the Downloading Updates message stays at 0%. My windows XP automatically downloaded sp3. I accepted installation. Upon
restarting my laptop, the computer quickly went thru saving personal settings
for I.E. 6 and Outlook but it stalled forever at saving personal settings for
"desktop"! after I completely gave up on it, I restarted the computer again.
It started ok and gave no error messages. How do I know that the sp3
installation was successful and complete? (though the general info of the
system properties menu identifies the system as sp3) Help please. Thanks.
