    - ISA Svr and Terminal Server I am looking for some best practices advice please. We currently have to replace our ISA Svr box with new hardware. At the moment this box only does this plus WSUS and virus management. Basically nothing. However the organisation is about to install a TS server to service about 60+ remote users. Originally we were going to place a second box behind the ISA server to do this but wondered if the TS workload could go on the ISA box to save on hardware? So the question is: would it be ok to combine TS and ISA on the same box or should we stick to the original plan of TS behind ISA? What do other people do here?     - Strange performance on Windows 2003 EE SP2 Hi all, I met a strange performance issue on Windows 2003 Enterprise X64 Edition with SP2 / Intel Xeon 3G(4chips * 4cores/chip) . On the server, there is a j2ee containner with some applications. A simple jsp code to query/insert/update some tables after the client clicked the submit. The clients complained that this update is slowly. I did a test on both the server and another pc. The result is very strange: From the server, the code executed costing 400ms, while 5+ seconds from PCs! The execute time is output in the jsp code, such like: System.out.println( new Date().getTime() ); ..... do updates ... System.out.println( new Date().getTime() ); I had done the test on a Windows 2003 EE 32Bit with SP2, the same result. The SNP is disiabled on both boxes. Any ideas?     - Trying to Test Windows Server 2008 Terminal Services I'm trying to test the use of Terminal Services on Windows Server 2008 Standard but I can't quite get it to work. I've installed the Terminal Services Role and published my Remote Applications using Office 2007 applications for the test. When I try to access the programs using http://myserver.com/ts using Vista SP 1, I can see the programs on the web page and even open them (e.g. Excel) but I immediately get an error message saying " this feature is not supported", and I can go no further. I should mention that my Vista SP1 is a virtual machine on the same Windows 2008 server, running under hyper-v. I'm too new to virtual machines to know if that's causing my problem. I should also mention I tried to connect to Terminal Services using XP Pro SP2, but had no luck because apparently I don't have the right version of RDC. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.     - Recovery Console question Folks: I am making some changes to our SBS 2003 Server this weekend and some questions have arisen that need fast answers... We are working on a server which is a domain controller. (SBS 2003) I am using Acronis True Image for Windows Server and I have a good backup of my Drives... The original Drive Arrays (they were too small so we had to upgrade to larger drives) have all been removed to make room for the new, larger hard disk arrays and the HP SmartController has been reconfigured to support the new RAID 5 configuration with 3 hard drives. So I cannot go back to the original setup. Acronis Tech support said I can restore the data partition by partition, (one at a time) so I can resize the partition on the new drive which is what we want to do. That process is running now and it will take 12 hours to complete. But they also said that I should not write the MBR using their software. They said I should boot to the recovery console and run some commands. They said: "Please boot up from the Windows Bootable CD, then go to the Recovery Console (the first Repair option you come to). From the command prompt please type: FIXMBR C: FIXBOOT C: COPY CDDrive:\I386\NTLDR C:\ COPY CDDrive:\I386\NTDETECT.COM C:\ BOOTCFG /rebuild ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The problem is that when you do this, Windows installation will ask you for the administrators password before you every have a chance to enter the commands.     - No Help and Support Center Ok. I know I'm in the wrong area, but it seems that "Microsoft Support" of any kind has become rather amoebic and spread out over God Knows where, and I've spent the last three hours just trying to find the right area to ask We're running Win 2K3 R2. I've got two identical servers (IBM x3650) running the 64 bit OS. On one of them, the "Help and Support Center" no longer runs, from ANY application, nor via "F1", nor from the Start menu. I've checked the "Data Execution Prevention" settings (which, by the way, won't let me change the 64Bit executables) and I've checked the registry for application file locations.     - different option for setting TS permission? 1. using ADUC on a server (domain controller or standalone server), go to user object properties, under Terminal Service Profile, there is a option as "Deny this user permissions to log on to any Terminal Server". The ADUC version is 5.2.3790.1830 2. using ADUC on a XP (installed as admin package for XP) the option change to "allow logon to terminal server". The version of ADUC is 5.2.3790.0. Why they are different? Is there a way to make it the same, especially on XP? a new adminpak? I know the dial-in Tab on xp has to be enabled through some special process.     - Problem with SNMP Hello, We are trying to monitor whether or not processes are running on the windows 2003 servers that we have. I currently have an odd problem. When I do an snmpwalk (from a unix server running nagios) of the hrSWRunName OID, it is supposed to show me ALL of the running processes but it only shows about 12-15 of them and just like murphy's law, it doesnt show the processes that I need to monitor!     - Cannot rdp into Domain controllers I had a 2003 domain with a 2003 & 2000 domain controller. I ran dcpromo on the 2000 box and demoted it to a member server. I then ran adprep /forestprep on the 2003 domain controller and then I ran dcpromo on a Windows 2003 R2 box and made it a domain controller. I can no longer rdp into either domain controller with domain administrator credentials. I see a security event 534 when I try and I also get this message interactively: "To log on to this remote computer, you must be granted the Allow log on through Terminal Services right. By default, members of the Remote Desktop Users group have this right.     - .MSI I am trying to create (which I have done) a GPO to push .Net 2.0 Framework to 24 computers. I have converted the .exe to .msi with freeware (Advcance Installer 6.2), created the GPO and pused it out. Computers see it, shows window after applying security settings and before you login, but my problem is that .Net 2.0 Framework requires user interaction to finish and runs in to the ULLA acceptance.     - Exchange Server C Drive out of SPACE!! We are currently running Exchange 2003 on a server with mirrored 18GB SCSI hard drives. As you probably guessed, the drives are filling up with the logs as the Database is stored on the D drive. Is there a way to break the mirror on the Boot drive, insert a bigger hard drive and remirror on a bigger drive and not lose any of our data or have to reinstall??     - Pesky Profile Problem Due to some weird things occuring with a user's account, I decided to delete the profile. Of course, that means deleting it from the profile storage location on the server, deleting the profile on the XP PC in profiles and removing the profile path in the user's account. At this point, no trace of a previous profile should exist. Yet, when the user logs in, desktop icons from the previous profile re-appear and a shortcut (that points to a mapped server drive) still has a .dll error. Repeating this process, I had the user login to a computer never used by him previously. I repeated the deletion steps. He logs in. Same problem. It has to be pulling this down from some location.     - IP Security Policies wont all DNS 53 pass through ? Hi, On Windows 2003 64 bit server i run the following test telnet <dns ip> 53 i connect ok to a remote dns server. I created a PACKET FILTER policy. Within this policy i have created the RULE "DNS". Within this rule i have a DNS filter. Filter is setup as follows: source = any ipaddress destination = any ip address protocol = tcp from = any to = 53 saved/applyed I now assigned the policy and try telnet <dns ip> 53 It fails to connect to the remote DNS server. If i unasigned the policy it works again. Why does my policy fail to allow DNS to pass through ?     - 2 windows 2003 DC hang problem Hello. IÂ´ve two windows 2003 std DC. This two DC are DNS servers of the lan. One of the servers has Exchange 2003. At 5 days ago iÂ´ve done an upgrade to 4 GB (maximum supported by windows 2003 std) to the server with Exchange 2003, and since that the server hangs, and do not generate any error in event viewer. The system freeze. All the client computers are Windows XP Professional, and are configured by DHCP and know the 2 DNS. When the server with Exchange 2003 goes down, iÂ´ve problems with users authentication (logon). I think the other server should kepp users authentications and computers working ok in the lan, but when users try to logon, the request fails ! IÂ´ve checked the AD and DNS replication and no problems were found. Why the other server does not respond to the client logon request? The problem of "system freeze" can be related with the quantitiy of 4 Gb of memory (i,ve already changed the DIMMS)? IÂ´ve done hardware diagnostic with HP smartstart CD, but no problems wer found.. These servers are the PDC and BDC of the domain and the only servers still running windows 2000 left in the domain.     - Print Server Hangs We have a Win 2k3 SP2 R2 server, Dual 1400 Mhz, 2 gb RAM. It is hosting right around 200 Lexmark printers. (Its only purpose in life) Out of the blue, it will hang and nobody can print to it anymore. When you go to the console or RD to it it is basically unresponsive. What we have found is in the task manager "lmabcoms.exe" runs at %99 to %100 usage and is the culprit. A hard reboot and it is peachy again for a couple of days. During normal operation, lmabcoms.exe does not take any CPU cycles, just chugs along in task manager. I am wondering if anyone else has similar problems using Lexmark printers hosted from a print server. We are in constant communication with Lexmark about the issue but they have not been able to solve it yet. We have rebuilt the server from scratch on several different hardware platforms and continue to have the same problem. lmabcoms.exe is the process for the Lexmark Enhanced Port and Lexmark Network Port, at least thats what Lemark and our researching point to.     - Redirecting users Hi, I'm not sure if if this is the right forum but here goes. I have a problem in that I have a load of Word documents with attached templates that are on a now defunct server. The problem is that Word now hangs for a long time looking for its template on non-existent server(it has been moved to a new server). Further investigation showed that this location is hardcoded in the Word document. A guy called Terry Farrell on the Word discussion group said that the only solution is to use the Windows Server Redirect command to redirect any requests for templates on the dead server to the new location.     - When you have to backtrack and downgrade a DC Okay, so I have this book from Microsoft that's basically a guide to get from NT 4.0 to Server 2003. Of particular interest is the section where they talk about going back to an NT DC if there's and installation error or something. Now basically the procedure is: Keep a BDC off line just in case. When something goes wrong, take all 2003 DCs off the network Promote the BDC to a PDC. And I would imagine this works fine if no computer had ever logged on to the new domain. But say you got everything up and running just fine on 2003 and a few days later decided you needed to go back to NT for some reason. This is the scenario I'm trying to simulate. And whenever I do this simulation, I can indeed put the domain back to the NT machine, but any computer that's 2000 or newer that has logged onto the new domain will not log back into the NT version. (specifically because it adopts the DNS naming structure of my new domain name). NT machines, of course, do revert back to the old domain with no problems that I can see. So is there any particular way to get one of these machines that's logged in to the 2003 domain to revert back to the NT domain without having to manually rejoin the domain on each computer? We are using a mix of mandatory profiles and general domain users that have NO roaming or mandatory profile. I have installed Exchange 2003 and plan to use iGetmail. My problem lies that I have evidently configured something wrong with DNS. My server name is topdog and my domain name is the same to which I will be receiving email. Now when I go to my server and attempt to use it, it doesnt recognize it as an internet address and comes back with a reply from its local address 192.168.1.101.     - Rights to run Server Manager from client? When we ran a Windows 2000 domain, I could appoint a certain number of selected staff members as "Server Operators". This enabled them to use Server Manager to disconnect sessions for students who had not logged off properly. Since we moved to Windows 2003-R2 (SP2) such a staff member can open Server Manager and when he/she clicks on a Domain Controller, he/she can control sessions.     - Access Denied to COM Security using Admin Account Hello, I was hardening the security of my windows server and i read the document about MSDTC that if you don't need it then disable. And this is exactly what I did. I stopped and disabled MSDTC service. And then i removed Anonymous Logon & Everyone permisson (Local Access & Remote Access) under component service for COM security. I restarted the server, logged in as Administrator and got access denied to most of the tasks such as creating users or adding users to group. The worst thing is that i can't even Right-Click on any object to check the properties. I tried to bring back the permission on the COM security but failed as Iâ??m getting access denied though Iâ??m logged in as administrator. Tried to restart MSDTC service but unsuccessful because i can't even right-Click on it. The event log is showing the following error. Check the Event Viewer.

If you suspect a power failure, connect some ordinary PC to the same
power outlet. If its "uptime" in the morning is the same that the server's
"uptime" then you're obviously dealing with a power failure.

I would first suspect that it is a hardware problem. Check the event
viewer and see if the "previous shutdown was unanticipated".... If that
is what you see, check for any pattern in the reboots.

I'd also log onto the server and start a shutdown. go to the point where
you can choose to shut down or restart. Does it say "restart"?

Pegasus is right about how to deduce a power failure. BTW, you *DO* have
it on a UPC, right? If not get one ASAP!!
