Error code 0x80070035 - The network path was not found
We recently purchased a pair of new servers and installed Windows Web Server
2008 on them.
During the initial setup of the servers I was able to copy data back and
forth from the existing 2003 Web Edition server and our 2003 R2 file server.
Once I had all the data I needed on one of the 2008 servers I put them both
on the DMZ and configured them identically. When it was time to transfer the
data (C:\inetpub), or even browse, from one server to the other I was unable
to do so. As I said before the servers are identical, the same users and
shares on each, both are members of a workgroup called DMZ.
The error message:
Title Bar â?? Network Error
Windows cannot access \\servername
Check the spelling of the name. Otherwise, there might be a problem with
your network. To try to identify and resolve network problems, click
diagnose.
Details:
Error code 0x80070035
The network path was not found.
If I click the â??Diagnoseâ?? button it tells me it canâ??t be repaired
automatically. This happens in both directions, server1 to server2 and
server2 to server1. Going from memory here is what I have tried so far making
one change at a time, I think:
â?¢ I can ping each server from the other
â?¢ I can use â??webemtestâ?? to authenticate and connect from server1 to server2
and server2 to server1
â?¢ The Windows Firewall service has been disabled on both servers
â?¢ Disabled UAC, this has been turned back on at this point
â?¢ Set both servers to use LM & NTLM â?? use NTLMv2 session security if
negotiated
â?¢ The workgroup DMZ has been set to be a private network on both servers but
changed back to public once and awhile, I think when other Network and
Sharing Center features are turned on or off
â?¢ Network and Sharing Center - Network discovery, file sharing, and password
protected sharing are all turned on, printer sharing is not because I am
unable to turn it on. Each time I try it resets itself to off after I click
apply (Web edition limitation â?? no print services?).
â?¢ File and printer sharing is enabled on the NIC
â?¢ Each server has a static IP, these are different of course
â?¢ I added records to the host file since DNS isnâ??t an option on Server 2008
Web Edition.
There may be more but I canâ??t think of it right now. I tried everything I
can think of short of calling Microsoft. Is this some type of limitation
imposed by Microsoft? I know the web edition is supposed to be scaled down
but seriously?! Do I need to run files to our web server with a USB stick
every time I want to update a web page?
Thoughts?

File access auditing
Server 2000 SP4 running AD.
I have read many posts about how to log file and folder
access, but it doesn't seem to work. I've enabled auditing
of object access in a group policy on the domain controller.
I've changed the properties of the folder to be audited and
added the groups to audit and what's to be audited.
Nothing shows up in the security event viewer when files
are accessed, changed, added or deleted.
It's got to be something I've overlooked.
Can anyone steer me in the right direction?

Automatic Updates options are all grey out for the for all the DCs
Hi, Everyone,
There is a weird thing happened to all the domain controller computers (all
Windows server 2003 std) in our company. I have not noticed when exactly this
started. It seems that the Automatic Updates options at our domain
controllers are grey out. I used to check "Notify me but don't automatically
download or install them" because i don't feel comfortable if i just let the
updates automatically install to the domain controllers. But recently i
noticed the all domain controllers just do the automatic updates and I am
not able to change this settings because all the options at Automatic Updates
(from Control Panel) are grey out.
I checked the default domain group policy, all shows not cofigured for the
windows updates. No other group policy linked to the domain controller OU. It
seems this started to happen when I load some Windows critical updates to the
servers couple of months ago.
Does anyone know how to troubleshoot this or at leasts point me to the
correct direction to check?
Thank you very much for any help from you guys.

Backup Exec not talking to VSS on Windows Server 2003 R2
Hello all,
I am not really sure where to put this thread so here goes.
I have come into a company where they are having a problem backing up
one of
the domain controllers. I am seeing an error message ID# 13, Source:
VSS. It
is showing a username in the registry that is no longer valid. When I
go to
the properties of VSS it is showing to use the System account. My
problem is
this: 2 DC's, one getting a successful backup and the other is not.
Both have
the same error message, and both are configured the same from what I
can see.
Can someone help me with this issue? This is getting to be very
confusing.

Username and Password greyed out
Here's one I've never run across before. I have a Windows 2003/SP2 domain
controller that I remotely manage via logmein IT-Reach. The client called
and said they couldn't log into the machine locally because the username and
password boxes were greyed out. I tried to log in via logmein IT-Reach. I
got the same thing. Straight RDP, same thing from both inside and outside the
network. I'm not finding much on the net about it. This is the only server
on this segment. Running AD, F&P, App, DNS, DHCP. I was hoping someone here
has seen this before. The only solution I've found so far is to do a
cold-start.

Diskmanagement does not show drive letter
Hi,
Got a problemem with mounting drives on an windows 2003 Enterprise server SP2.
After mounting a disk from a san the windows server does not show a drive
letter to the mounted disk. Windows explorer does show a drive letter,
windows command does show a drive letter but under windows disk management
there is no drive letter assigned to the disk.
If you want to add a drive letter to the disk it gives a error, but in you
got to the explorer of command prompt you can browse to the folder and files.
After a server reset a drive letter is assigned and is working fine.
The reason why restating is not an option is that the mounted disk must be
available for the backup. So restarting the server several times a night is
not really a solution.
Anybody an idea why windows is behaving like this, and even more important
is there a know solution to it beside restarting the server.

NTBackup - The device reported an error on a request to write data to media.
Hi,
I'm having some problems with NTBackup. We currently have 5 servers which we
have two NTBackup jobs set-up on each server. One backup job for each server
is for backing up system state. The next backup job which runs after that
backs up the files and then the system state backup.
The problem that I am getting is that on some days the backups on different
servers fail, its currently random as to which backup will fail and on what
day. When they fail the error log always contains the following:
Error: The device reported an error on a request to write data to media.
Error reported: Unknown error.
Then if it was an exchange backup
Error: SERVER\Microsoft Information Store\First Storage Group is not a valid
drive, or you do not have access.
If it was a file backup (the drive letter will change depending on where the
files are being backed up.
Error: E: is not a valid drive, or you do not have access.
If I go and run that schedule task again it will succeed. Because the
backups can run perfectly I think that the error which is being reported is
not correct because obviously the drives are accessible. What I'm thinking
it could be (I'm guessing here) is that maybe this is the error that you get
when doing a backup across the network and maybe the network connection
drops out for a second.
I really need to get this sorted and working, does anyone have any ideas on
what I should do here?
Cheers

Bare Metal Domain Controller Migration
Hello,
We have a domain controller running on a dell 2850 server which we want to
migrate to a new piece of hardware. This machine is a domain controller,
smtp server and DNS server. For a host of reasons we need the new hardware
to run a domain controller with the same name and same IP address as the
currently running domain cotroller. We have started to investigate products
from Symantec, PlateSpin and Altiris. One of the reasons we feel like we
need to look at such products is that we don't feel like the server can be
down for an extended period of time. To do this manually would require
demoting from the domain, changing the name, IP, etc. Then Bringing up new
server, promoting to DC, configuring smtp, etc. This would take a long time
if it went smoothly with no problems. Any advice you might suggest or
vendors that would be helpful would be much appreciated.

How can I confirm I can access an NTP server
Greetings,
I really would like to see a 593 event showing up in the system log, that to
me would be positive confirmation. I have bounced the time service, done a

My 11 warnings have stopped, but I would feel better if I got some "positive
feedback" so I know the new time server is actually working for these
servers. On one of my servers, I got a 593 shortly after bouncing the
service, and this one has the Update Rollup for SP4 installed, the other two
servers don't and they don't get the 593 after bouncing the services. I
don't know if this make's a difference. If anyone has any information on

"replacing invalid security ID" message leads to an hours-long scan on startup, how to fix?
I have a 2003 Windows Server server that on startup starts an hours-long

I think this might have resulted from an automatic RAID rebuild of the disk,

Multiple Connections for Mapped Drives

disconnect the "w:" I can then authenticate to the server as administrator.
Steps I have taken:
1.) reset permissions on the users shared home folder.
2.) deleted local profile
3.) checked "open shares" on server to make sure the account does not
already have a file or directory open or locked.

Print Server Sizing/Best Practice
Hello,
We are moving from Novell (NDPS) print servers and LPR printers to Windows
print servers. Since I haven't configured such an environment before, I have
begun researching my options and thought I would post here as well. I'm
familiar with how to configure a print server I but I want to make sure it's
appropriate for our larger environment.
AD running on Win2k but will soon be 2003 R2 or 2008.
1,300 users
1,100 xp machines
20 or so HP LaserJets on the network
Roughly 65 Xerox network multi-function printers that are managed by Xerox
Managed Services.
I just want to make sure that performance does not suffer and that
reliability and redundancy can be achieved. We probably don't need instant
fail-over but I would say it's acceptable if the users can't print for an
hour or two (mgmt. is getting this together soon.) Deployment is up to the
Workstation team/Xerox but I'll be working closely with them and would really
like to automate it as much as possible. GPO, Con2Prnt, rundll32, etc.....
I was thinking of using VM's on our SAN so we could utilize VMotion and HA.
Maybe even use some VM's and a physical box as well. I was hoping there was a
way to print to a group of servers or something like a cluster. I don't think
we will be able to create a true cluster as I've never done this before and
we would have to purchase additional hardware but it's not out of the
question.
I'll be researching this but I would appreciate any advice!

Windows 2008 Server - cannot copy files from server to another machine; reverse works ok
Hi!
My Windows 2008 Server started acting up on me all of a sudden.
Every time I try to copy a larger file from it to a network share on another
machine, it freezes, reporting that the local file I am trying to copy
cannot be found ("Item Not Found" error dialog", or that there is a network
error accessing the local (!)file. Sometimes the copy works a bit at the
beginning, then the speed crumbles to < 10KB/sec, and the errors pop up.
All machines are in a Windows 2003 AD, the 2008 box is a workstation, not a
dc server.
I managed to disable all advanced tcp features (RSS, Chimney offload,
receive windows tuning, congestion control), and now I can at least transfer
files to a Windows 2003 server (slow; 4MB/sec). Transfering to vista x64
(also with modified txp features) still doesn't work.
What's funny is that going in the oposite direction - putting the files onto
the windows 2008 server box - works without a hitch. From the Vista box it
goes with cca. 11 MB/sec.
Any hints on how to fix this? The 2008 Server is my primary development
workstation and this is a *major* pain.
Thanks & Best Regards,

Server Hangs
Greetings,
My Win2K3 SP1 domain controller locks up every day and I have not been able
to find a reason for the lock-up. The Event Viewer shows no errors and no
STOP errors are generated. The controller simply does not respond to
keyboard, mouse, or network communication, requiring a reset to bring it
back up. When it does reboot, there is no indication that anything went
wrong. This started occurring shortly after I implemented a software mirror
on my C:\ drive (boot drive). In fact, after rebooting, the mirror always
resynchs. Could it be that there is an issue with the software mirror?
Short of breaking the mirror, are there any diagnostics that I could run?
If the mirror is the cause, what could be leading up to the lock up? Could
a bad drive in the mirror array (there are two) cause a lock-up?
The computer is not overheating and there are no exclamation points in the
Device Manager display. After rebooting, the mirror resynchs without error
and the system hums along fine until the next lock-up. No dump files are
generated. Are there any monitoring tools that I can run to audit the
machine activity so that I could review a log file after rebooting from a
lock-up?
Please - any help is very much appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Messages about corrupt files
I get some weird messages about corrupt files when making a backup of files
on a network location.
I am using DFS. The files are on a virtual location with two domain
controllers hosting this location. The files are also replicated to two
folders. When backing up throught the network location I get error messages
about some files being corrupted. When backing up the same files from one of
the folders locally the backup works fine.
System w2003. The problem happens as well as making backups on a 2003 server
as well as on an XP Professional workstation.
Please advise. Tag: wmi and resetiing DTC log Tag: 114708
