    - Server 2003 - Limiting jobs sent to Print Spooler? Hi All, At work we utilise a Windows Server 2003 Print Server. We have recently had issues whereby customers have unwittingly sent huge (200+MB) jobs to printers, causing slowdown on the Print Server. Is there any way to limit the size of individual print jobs that are sent to the Print Server? Is there a way of stopping such jobs before they even reach the Print Server? Note it would be preferable to accomplish this within Microsoft's own environment and tools, rather than resorting to 3rd Party, but any ideas appreciated.     - SNMP request not working Hi, We are using Dell IT assistant application to monitor or Dell servers with Windows 2003 installed via SNMP. Dell IT assistant can detect and monitor all Dell servers in our networks except for one Windows 2003 SP1 server. SNMP service is starting on that server. Restarting SNMP service and the server itself won't work. SNMP configuration on that server is exactly the same as the others so that shouldn't be the problem. Very unlikely that the problem is with Dell IT assistant since all other server can be detected. Any suggestion on how to fix this problem. I prefer not to install/reinstall SNMP yet.     - IAS server blues (Can't get 802.1x to work) I am deploying a new Wireless LAN with DLINK's DES1228 Managed Wireless AP Switch and DWL 3140 Access points. The connection initiates and then fails on authentication. This is 802.1x with WPA, EAP and AES. I found the guide for interpreting IAS logs but just my luck Unknown error 23 is just that - unknown (someday I hope to get a known error) This appears to be an authentication failure note that in the IAS log code 4136 has the value of 3 which is user access denied.     - HELP PLEASE! HTTP 404 error, cannot access website anymore. I had a wesbite serving up an online curriculum program, and have been hosting additional content in the web folder of the site located on this server. Well, I got a little bored and tried to host an Access database with a data access page in the same folder, but when I got the "Internet Server Error: Object/Module Not Found", I did a little research on MS website, and screwed with the Execute Permissions settings on the Home Directory tab in IIS. It did not fix my database problem, and now I cannot even access my site. I went back to undo what I did, and the settings I had previously changed, appeared as though I had not changed them, however the website still does not work, PLEASE HELP!     - TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper, WINS Tab, Netbt.sys Hi all, I am trying to work out exactly what each of these items do in terms of networking?! I have discovered that if I disable the netbios entries under the wins tab of my network card, my computer stops listening on UDP 137, 138 and TCP 139... so I assume the effect of this, it that my machine is technically unavailable for wins elections, and SMB over 139 (legacy clients)?? The TCP/IP NetBIOS helper seems to be an odd one, because the moment I disable it, I cannot use UNC shares etc nor join a domain using a FQDN - why is this exactly?? Do these things I am trying to do rely on NetBIOS in some way, or is that without this service running, the requests do not get passed down to the DNS resolver??! Also what role does NetBT.sys perform in all of this... the reason I saw this was because I discovered that the only way of shutting off port 445 on my machine completely is to disable this??     - Change from Linux to Windows. Hi First of all my apologies for cross posting, but this covers many issues that I do not think may be possible to cover in a single post. If I have underestimated the skills in the community, again my apologies. I have a major redesign of our network to undertake - without impinging on the business operation. I can't really do a weekend as we are a 24/7 operation. I need to move from 1 scenario to another and am looking for the best way of doing it - these follow. Current Scenario - Externally managed Linux Server with 3 ADSL lines acting as Gateway/DHCP Server/Firewall/VPN Server (OpenVPN)/File Server Windows 2K3 R2 servers managing DNS/Active Directory/Exchange (including external RPC over HTTP access)/File & Print Services. Future Scenario - Everything managed in a Windows 2K3 R2 environment with a leased line, intersite VPN (have office in London & Doncaster) and a firewall with a DMZ for a Application Web Server running on Red Hat Enterprise (which I can't change as it was in place when I arrived). I already have the leased line in place (but not yet used) and have purchased ISA Server 2006. My issues are 1) How do I move DHCP to Windows without interrupting Internet access for the main site? 2) Will this affect VPN access, both individual and intersite? 3) I need to change the gateway for the main site to the leased line while (for the present) leaving VPN access through the Linux box. This will utilise ISA Server, which will eventually handle all firewall operations. What is the best way to achieve this? 4) Anything else I need to be aware of? When all this is complete I will then de-commission the Linux gateway/server and have everything handled internally.     - this should be so simple..... but it ain't ... so far my 2000 server died and i built a new 2003 server with the old servers computer name and ip address, install dns, wins, and dhcp all fine i have all the AD user id's and passwords set up in the AD i have 35 users that use to login to the old 2000 domain (mixed xp pro and windows 2000 machines) i can login sometimes as administrator and other times i get errors or can't login at all is there something on the workstations that identifiy them to the old server and NOT to the new server hope there is a simple fix for this ps. i unjoined my xp workstation from the domain and then rejoined the domain and then i could log on everytime without a problem but i don't want to do that with 35 machines as it would be time consuming and also setup a new profile for all machines i just want to have the users login as they did before as the new 2003 server is configured that same as the old 2000 server, file paths, printers, etc thanks in advance kinda lost Tag: Write your Thesis with this one Tag: 112722

    - Windows 2000 to 2003 domain Upgrade Hi, I'm in the process of upgrading our domain from W2000 to W2003. Before any upgrade tasks I had 2 x W2000 DC's. One of these servers was the only DNS server in this domain. So far all I have done is performed a DCPromo on a W2003 server (following a forest and domain prep). Also I have installed DNS on the new W2003 DC. My query relates to Domain Trusts and how the might be effected by this upgrade. Configured on the W2000 server is an "incoming trust" to an external domain where we have access to a shared folder on a server. From an AD perspective there are no other connectivity to the external domain. With the view of gradually retiring the W2000 server that was acting also as a DNS server I changed the IP address to the W2000 to something else and changed the address of the new W2003 DC/DNS server to the address once held by the W2000 server (This way there was no need to change IP configs on the client systems) Everything worked fine (Internet, email etc) except for access to the Shared folder in the External Domain. After this IP swap, when I tried to connect to the shared folder I receive an error "There are Currently no Logon Servers available to service the logon request" When I swap the IP's back I can connect to the shared folder in the Trusting Domain again without any problems.     - Excel file opens in read-only mode from one server but not another I have a couple of users that are receiving the following error message when they attempt to open an excel file on a personal network home share. The share resides on a Windows 2003 server which is to date with all service packs and updates. The client is Windows XP Professional SP2 with all updates applied. I've checked out the following KB articles: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/814112 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/214073 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/313472 When I copied the folder that contains the files to another server and attempt to open open of the excel documents I do not receive the error. So it's something to do with this one server. I've tried disabling anti virus thinking that maybe Real time virus scan had the file open. ERROR MESSAGE ======================== File in use "filename.xls" is is locked for editing by johnw. Open read-only or click notify to open read only and receive notification when the document is no longer in use. ===================== When you go into Computer Management > Shared Folders> open files, the file is not actually open at all.     - PC Server File/Folders display as truncated on MAC My team uses a file storage "server", at another physical location on our network, and when we save files to it from our PC's every thing is ok. However when our Mac's vew the files on the "server" the names appear truncated to six characters and a ~ plus the file extention.     - Scriplogic Active Administrator Our WAN consists of 10 geographically dispersed sites. On each site there are 2 domain controllers. Our sites are connected by means of an MPLS network. One of the sites serves as the central hub, where all services are hosted. We are using an application called Active Administrator by a company called Scriptlogic to centrally record the security logs of all domain controllers on all sites. This application is hosted on a server in our central hub site. The database backend is hosted on another server on the same site. There is an Active Administrator service running on each domain controller. This service uploads details of the security log on each domain controller to the Active Administrator application server. We have noticed however that this service periodically causes congestion on our MPLS network, as all domain controllers are uploading security log details to the one location. My question is, does anyone else here use Active Administrator? If so, have you run into the problems we are experiencing and were you able to resolve them? I have not gone into detail about application versions, events being logged, etc., as I would first like to find out if anyone has had a similar experience.     - Server will not shutdown or log off W2k3 R2 sp2 will not respond to a log off or shutdown command. Nothing unusual logged in the event log. Removed APC UPS software to eliminate that possiblity. Can't seem to find anything that is not right but it is slow to respond and no response on shutdown, restart or logoff. The small office is located in another location away from the main office and both offices are connected using a lease line. We are using a firewall to restrict traffic coming from the small office into the main office.     - Windows 2008 - Users disconected from share We setup the first Windows 2008 server in our 2003 AD domain. I have this server setup with the File Services role. We have 1 share on this server and about 40 users that map drive letter M to this share. About every 1 to 2 hours all users are disconnected from this share and the only way to get them reconnected is to reboot the server. This server is a brand new HP ML110. This is the only windows 2008 server on our network. At first we through the problem was occurring because the server was not activate. We activated the server and the problem continues to occur. I have checked the event log and I do not see any entries related to this. Any ideas on why this is happening? Please let me know if you need more detail.     - Files corrupted / will not open All of a sudden today one of our 2003 servers has a problem. When trying to open documents (Word and Excel), it prompts to do a file conversion. Wants to know what "Encoding" to use to make the document readable. It appears all across this server, but does not appear to be a problem on other servers I checked.     - Question about exporting the DHCP database Hello, We have a 2003 Server SP1 as our domain controller. To save possible headaches itwas suggested that for disaster recovery purposes I can create a script to run that will export the domain controller DHCP database to a text file. That text file can be exported to another location, perhaps on a server where where it could be quickly imported into DHCP for in case the original domain controller suffered a failure.     - Event ID 1053 I have a new server (actually two identical servers) that are receiving an Event ID 1053 error message on boot. The error says: Windows cannot determine the user or computer name. (The specified domain either does not exist or could not be contacted. ). Group Policy processing aborted. I can successfully run gpupdate /force from a command line. I also see in the log that policies are being successfully applied later. This seems to be only during boot. I've tried several things thinking that it might be trying to establish communication before the NIC team is ready. I have disabled another NIC on a different network (this machine is intended to be a cluster and I had the other interface configured as the heartbeat connection). The only interface left is the team. I have also applied the "wait for network" group policy and applied the reg key from kb202840 among a number of other things while troubleshooting this. I can connect to \\mydomain\sysvol\mydomain successfully. I have worked through an issue in DNS where for some unkown reason it was querying an incorrect DNS though ipconfig showed it to be configured correctly. DNS is now resolving correctly and the DNS entry for the server is showing up correctly after removing it from the domain and rejoining it. In addition, watching the network traffic no longer shows the errant query. This is just a pesky startup error that makes me hesitant to put product clustered resources on the box (es).     - JCIFS18_15_5D We had a few Windows servers that had the last batch of Windows Updates installed and were not rebooted (there was a box indicating that a reboot was required on the desktop). We noticed that a user account that is used on many services on these servers was getting locked out on the domain controllers every couple of minutes. We finally resolved the issue by rebooting the servers. What makes this odd is that the source of the authentication request aws from JCIFS18_15_5D and JCIFS18_145_ED. These machines do not exist on our network. We scanned our network and did not find them. We did a NETSTAT -a and no host was found. My question is this: Does anyone know what JCIFS18_15_5D is?     - W2K3: Volume Shadow Copy Slow Client I have two file servers which are both running Volume Shadow Copy. One is W2k3 Std and the other is W2k3 Storage. If I bring up the Previous Versions tab on a properties window on my XP client, the W2k3 Std shares come right up, showing me previous backups. The W2k3 Storage one takes nearly 10 minutes to display. Sometimes explorer even crashes on the client. Here are some of the particulars: W2k3 Std SP2 Shadow Copy on D:, 69 shares, 2621 MB out of 54723 MB, Schedule is 10 AM and 2 PM M-F. Shadow copies only exist from 5/5/08 to today (5 currently). W2k3 Storage Shadow Copy on E:, 2 shares, 32236 MB out of 67904 MB, Schedule is 9 AM and 3 PM M-F. Shadow copies exist from 4/1/08 to today (~56 or so currently). I'm thinking that it's the sheer number of Shadow Copies which is causing the client to work so slowly on the Storage box, but I'm puzzled as to why the first server seems to be purging them off early and the second seems to keep them around so long.     - Boot.ini problems I have a SBS 2003 R2 server that I can't boot without a boot floppy. Here's what happened - I have a software mirror using SATA hard drives. Drive 0 failed so I created a boot floppy while I waited for the replacement drive to arrive. I got the replacement drive and mirrored the system backup and set the boot.ini to look at drive 0. Something to note here Drive0 had a Dell Utility partion on it which wasn't mirrored to Drive1 so it was lost. I'm not sure if this is part of my issue and I haven't been able to find an answer on Dell's website. Below is the boot.ini that I'm using on the floppy (that works). This is also the SAME config I've saved to the boot.ini on the hard disk.     - NTP Service (Windows Time) I have a Windows 2003 Stnd server that is a member of a domain. However, the specalized software used on this server is logged in via a local account on the server. Because of this software I am needing to sync with a NTP server for proper time stamps for this application; however, if I set the NTP server staticly and type net time under the local account; I get Access Denied. Is this because this machine is on the domain and I am logged in as a local account? This local account is an Administrator of the local machine, BTW. Thank you!     - Scheduled Tasks Windows 2003 SP2, member server in the domain. Have been running a batch file for some time via Scheduled Tasks for a tape backup. Then in mid March it stopped. The log file said "Logon failure: the user has not been granted the requested logon type at this computer". I have configured this thing so many different ways I am getting sick of it. I have Symantec Backup software but do not want to install it unless absolutely necessary. I cannot stand any products by Symantec, they all suck!     - Configuring Windows Server 2003 Service Dependencies Does anyone know if it is possible to make a local service on "Server A" dependent on a service on another server "Server B?" We have a service that is dependent on SQL services to properly start up but it is actually dependent on a remote server's SQL server service... and our GPOs are currently configured to install and reboot at the same time... and what happens is that it takes longer for Server B to reboot and start the SQL service which leads to the service on Server A to not start properly (it doesn't actually fail, it just doesn't start). I have the three recovery options set to restart the service but this doesn't seem to be effective because apparently Windows is not seeing the service as failing to start.     - AD system state backup on Windows 2008, disk size increasing Hello everyone, I've been working lately with Windows Server 2008 RTM version, and I promoted one server (virtual machine) as a DC. After having some obstacles configuring the AD system state backup I finally completed and I had a schedule backup running periodically. That backup storage is made on a seconday disk on the DC, but I found out that the system state backup catalog it's getting real big in a few weeks, meaning that the VM disk is increasing as well (over 25gb right now). Is there any way that I can have more control about that? Like accessing the system state catalog and removing old system state backups?     - Login problem SBS 2003 Hi I have a problem loggin in on a SBS 2003 system. My workstation is XP-Pro. The system is using roaming profiles. The user home directory (H:) is on a share (\\servername\username$\). When I log in the "My Documents" folder starts to duplicate itself into itself (foldar plu contents). The structure of the folder looks like: H:\My Documents\My Documents\My Documents\My Documents\My Documents\. It is doing so while showing "applying your personal settings" and it continues doing so until I interrupt it (or diskspace on the server is exausted I guess :-( ). Please post the complete story of what you have done, what do you try to
achive and what OS do you use. Otherwise this kind of info is not enough
to find your problem. Also please post not abbreviations, use full names
of software, etc.
