System32 folder opens at startup
Hi
When I log into the system, system32 folder automatically opens. This is not
causing any problem but is annoying. Any idea how I can fix this?
Thanks

User My document folder issue
Each user has a home directory on the server for My Documents.
Their My Documents link points to the home directory folder.
We use syncronization for laptop users.
Today, the principal , of all people could not access her My Documents
folder.
Upon diagnosing I noticed that the My Document link in her start menu was
now showing that the MY Document folder lives on the local machine, which is
why she was not seeing the network folder.
Any ideas on what could cause this?
What is the best approach to resolve, since XP would not let me change the
path for the My Document folder?
We ended up blowing away the user profile on the laptop. Not sure if this
was the only recourse. Tag: Windows 2003 with IIS Tag: 115127

WSUS Question
Hello,
We are trying to install and configure WSUS on a server that has SQL
Server on it. We do not want to use the SQL server instance so we
wanted to install MSDE for the WSUS. We are receiving an error when
we try to install MSDE:
A strong SA password is required for security reasons. Please use
SAPWD switch to supply the same.
Is this a conflict between SQL Server and the MSDE on the box? Can
they both be on there?
Thanks.

can access IPs but not by hostname
We have a W2K standard server used as web server that can access
external
sites / hosts by IP address, but not by hostname.
nslookup shows that DNS is working fine and it can resolve hostnames
to ip fine. But, when trying to use IE, or ASP mail directed to a
hosted mail server on the same network (mail.domain.com) it will fail
and gives an "Unknown host mail.domain.com" error.
Using any browser by hostname fails with server can't be found. Use
http:// ip address and it works fine.
Incoming traffic works fine, but there are some sites on the server
are using ColdFusion's cfhttp to
access remote data, as well as posting credit card data through custom
tags to processors using hostnames and not ip addresses.
Everything in the network control panel seems fine, and again using
nslookup from the cmd prompt indicates that DNS resolution is working
fine. Tag: Windows 2003 with IIS Tag: 115094

Modem software on Window 2003 Server
I have a faxmodem attached a server running Windows 2003 Server. I use the

Expanding a software RAID5 array in Windows 2003
Excuse the repost... for some reason my previous posts can't be found on the
server. Does Microsoft filter postings from users that don't use a MS NNTP
client?
I've got a Windows 2003 Server. I have several 500gig hard drives assembled
into a software RAID5 array. This array works well.
I've just installed a new 500gig hard drive into this PC. It comes up in the
Disk Manager and I was able to convert it to a dynamic disk, but I can't
figure out how to add this drive to the array.
I was able to do this the last time I added a drive to the PC, but I do not
remember how.
How do you expand a RAID5 array after installing a new hard drive into the
system???
Also, a related question... How can you see how big a single partition
assigned to a RAID5 array is? How can I see what size to allocate on the new
drive to match othe existing drives in the array?

Offline folders in peer-to-peer environment
Background:
Friends have small shop with a W2000 server. They (9 users) log onto
server and from there the primary application is to use QuickBooks in a
workgroup mode. Exchange NOT on their server. They fetch their email from
their internet webhost ( not ISP - just outfit that hosts their website
and email - I'll call the webhost company ABC ). Currently the email
service at ABC delivers their email to their PC's and then deletes it from
ABC's server, leaving the only copy of their mail on each PC in the
DocsandSettings\Username\...AppData\Outlook folder.
They COULD buy a new server/disks but they are really just casual users
and no one qualified to be sys mgr, so looking at options to keep it
simple - even if they buy new box.
Question:
Can they 'map a network drive', then setup the " Outlook folder" on each
PC to be an Offline folder , pointing to a folder on that network drive -
either the server or another peer ? Maybe a USB drive with a folder for
each user ?
For this example, assume 3 pcs:
PC1 PC2 Server
PC1 fetches email from ABC as usual - goes about his business, when he
logs off XP ( Vista ?) , that Outlook folder syncs with the remote
folder ( either on PC2 or Server) leaving a backup of that folder on the
server/peer ? I realize that " the other PC" must be there for this to
work. Reason I mention not just server as option is: server disk space is
getting tight - uses 2 SCSI drives now and tape - no room in case for
another drive... and also if can sync with portable pc/drive then can get
backup offsite too.
Any opinions/options/related experience appreciated on how to handle.

FTP site on an ADC
Hi ,
I have a Windows Server 2003 R2 Enterprise box which is an ADC and
runs SMS 2003 SP3 primary site, a FTP web site and ISA 2006 to protect
the FTP as well provide Web Proxy services. My FTP site is running
quite nicely though I've heard the above mentioned setup is not good
and can cause lots of unexplained problems.
I have set up the FTPROOT directory to one of the partitions and what
I have done to authenticate FTP users is this
1. I Created an OU called FTP accounts on the ADC and then create
normal user accounts .
2.I Create FTP folders with the name of the client as the folder
name .the same folder name is used to create the user account in the
OU FTP accounts.
3. Once the user accounts have been created, i then proceed to set
permissions on the individual folders inside the FTP root.
eg- Suppose client is Siemens. so the FTP user account would be
siemens. The new folder inside the FTP root directoy would also be
siemens and then I proceed to give Domain\siemens Read\Write\Modify
permissions to the siemens folder.
I also deny permission to delete the folder, change user permissions or
take ownership.
this done when the user ftp's into the FTP site through IE 6 and
authenticates ,it takes him directly to the correct folder ,leading
the user to think he is at the home folder. He cannot traverse up as
only the required folder is being shown .
My real issue is that when the user FTP's in from
Mozilla,Opera ,Safari,Unix or even IE7 or IE8 ,it takes him to the
FTPROOT directory!!, in my case E: .
This shows him all the other folder names and lets him see al the
other FTP folders and since our company has rival companies as
clientswho think they are the only ones whom we do business with,it's
a real business killer!!!
Is this because I have allowed the user group EVERYONE to list folder
contents at the FTP root directory( E:) . Is there any way to limit
the view of the FTP clients to just their folder.
When I removed the everyone -list folder contents from the
root, then nobody was able to log in to the FTP site.
Also is IIS Lockdown tool good for my FTP site?

Disable NTFS Compression for Users
Is there a method to disable users from compressing NTFS drives, folders,
and/or files on a server? For example, if a user goes into properties for a
network drive there is a check box option for "Compress drive to save disk
space". If they check this option there are not denied access and the
compression occurs.
A couple users have already compressed their home folders. Luckily nobody
has done this for the common shared folder yet. I played with this in the
lab and it appears write access or higher allows a user to compress.
This MS article says how compressing can affect performance so I find it odd
it can't be easily disabled for users.
"Best practices for NTFS compression in Windows"
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/251186/EN-US/
I have done a lot of searching and have yet to find a good solution. I was
hoping for a group policy method so it can be done centrally and quickly.
This is the only possible solution I have found, 2 quotes from MS below. It
would basically mean formatting the drive with a cluster size larger than 4
KB. I haven't tested this yet. I'm hoping there is a better way.
"Because file compression is not supported on cluster sizes greater than 4
KB, the default NTFS cluster size for Windows Server 2003 never exceeds 4
KB."
"The compression algorithms in NTFS support cluster sizes of up to 4 KB.
When the cluster size is greater than 4 KB on an NTFS volume, none of the
NTFS compression features are available."
This is what I am working with.

Shadow Copy and volume cluster size
I am looking to set up Shadow copy on a Windows Storage Server2003.
I have a primary volume that is presently 1.4TB.
Technet recommends "Use an allocation unit size of 16 (KB) or larger on a
source volume on which shadow Copies of Shared Folders will be Enabled.
(Apparently there could be loss of files with defragmentation of the volume).
The volume default cluser size is 4KB.
I am considering splitting the size of this disK space into 2 volumes - One
volume(D:) for files and the other volume(E:) for Storing Shadow Copies.
Prior to loading any files and enabling shadow copy I have the following
questions:
Q: If the D volume is enabled for shadow copy but the actual copiesa are
stored on a separate volume - is it still necessary to have the clustere size
of this volume at 16 KB to eliminate any issues with defragmentation?
Q: Should the E volume that just contains "Shadow Copies" have a cluster
size of 16KB?
Any comments or recommendations would be appreciated.

"Desktop Features"
Hi
It is not very common, but I make very good experiences using Windows Server
2008 as my Workstation OS - after installing desktop features (Media Player,
Windows Mail, ...).
But I have two little details, to fix:
1. Beside Media Player, "Windows Live Messenger Download" Icon is installed
during desktop features installation; so everyone can install the program, if
needed. Unfortunately this messenger app cannot be installed in this Server
OS (error message). How can I still install it? Is there a possibility to
temporary switch a specific registry entry, that Windows Live Messenger will
"think" to install the program on Vista or XP? Which is this reg-entry? Or is
there a better way to force installation?
2. It is a good thing to change the view of images in the file-explorer:
Zooming in from the "Detail view" to a bigger size, Vista would show us the
real picture in thumb nail size. Windows Server 2008 seems not to be able to
show the real content of pictures in preview mode, even this feature would
not only be good for me, but also on picture-file-servers browsing in a big
amount of images.
Is there a way to activate this "preview mode" for pictures in the
file-explorer?
Thanks a lot for your hint.

Group Policy - Accessing areas from open Applications
Hi,
We are ready to implement 6 new machines onto our network. These are solely
used to access networked files through an application. The application uses
word and excel.
We have implemented Group Policy to heavily restrict what users can do
(Remove My Computer, My Docs, My Network Places, Prevent seeing all drives).
However when Excel / Word opens one of the networked files we have found that
you can open / save to the C drive and access all areas of that.
Is there a setting within Group Policy that also prevents users from opening
/ saving files from / to the C: drive when in applications such as Word /
Excel?

Windows 2008 Cals and Upgrade paths
Hello.
I have one windows 2008 standard edition server I would like to know if I
can upgrade this machine (by changing the key) to the enterprise version.
I would like to run more than one virtual machine on this server at this
point it time
and would like the ability to do so.
I am running window 2008 64 bit on 64 bit hardware using windows 2003
virtual machine (32 bit)
Another question I have is if I run on windows 2008 DC do I have to upgrade
all of my CALS. They are only windows 2003 cals.
This machine would be my PDC and would not be serving shares to my users as
they will continue to use the windows 2003 server at their sites.
I want to upgrade one DC so I can have access to group policy perferences I
believe this requires at least one windows 2008 DC. Or can group policy
peferences run on a windows 2008 member server or a windows 2003 DC.

W2003 profiles broken after password change
I hope I'm posting to the right group, if not please let me know...
Running Windows 2003 server, clients are all XP Pro SP2 and 3 mixed. Long
story short:
As far as I can tell the following holds true:
User's account is set to require a change of password at the next login.
User logs on to workstation, and is prompted to change password.
User successfully changes password, and logs in.
User's Lotus Note's icon points to C: drive, My Documents does not appear to
remap to server.
User logs out, logs into different machine, Lotus Note icon correctly points
to H: drive, My Documents appear to map correctly.
User logs out, logs back into machine where password change was performed.
User desktop is still default, Lotus Notes icon points to C:.
Log into any workstation other than the one where the password was changed
and the user login works fine.
A couple of things I have noticed:
On machines where the user password was changed, a local profile is created
for the user. User profiles on the local workstation have two options, local
or roaming. Profiles on the workstation other than the user with the password
change are set to roaming. You can check user profiles by going to My
Computer -> Properties -> Advanced -> User Profiles -> Settings. The profile
for the user whose password was changed is set to local, with roaming grayed
out. Neither logging in as the Domain Administrator or the local
administrator account will allow the profile to be changed to roaming or, for
that matter, deleted. Only once the user has logged into another workstation
can you then delete the local profile on the original machine (logged in as
an admin).
I downloaded a hot fix from MS (KB Article Number(s): 821425) but can't get
it to install on the server, unable to locate update.inf.

bogus disk space errors
After migrating a Win2K3 system to different hardware I have certain users
that get "insufficient disk space" errors when they try to save files in
shared folders on the server, even though there is plenty of room.
I say certain users, because not everyone has the same problem; Other users

of the event logs.
Any ideas?

KMS Headache
Here is the situation. I installed one 2008 box about a month ago.
Initially I installed a KMS key before I knew about this feature. Since I
didn't know how long it would be before I had 5 servers, I changed that key
to MAK key. Well, now I am installing four more 2008 servers so I want to
use the KMS keys on all servers.
I have the KMS service running on a 2003 R2 domain controller. The four new
2008 boxes all register with the KMS server. I see their requests in the
event log. The original 2008 server will not register with this KMS server
so my other 4 servers can't get activated - the count is still only at 4.
One the first server, when I run the slmgr -ato command, it says it is
successfully registered yet the KMS server still only shows 4 attempts. So
where is this first server registering and why won't it register as the 5th
server?
Is there a way I can reset everything on that first server? I have tried
uninstalling and reinstalling the product key. I have tried rearming the
server and reinstalling the system license files.
Any help would be appreciated. Tag: Windows 2003 with IIS Tag: 114972
System State backup v/s GPO backup
Hi,
I have a general question. At the moment I am in Group Policy Management
console in windows 2003.
I noticed that their is a way to back up the GPO's.
Now as part of our regular back schedule we only backup system state of the
domain controller.
1) Does that backup cover GPO's?
2) In what instances would one use the backup option that is available in
Group Policy Management console

Question Insufficient system resources on 64-bit Windows RSS Sear
One of our customers has a 64-bit Windows 2003 Ent.SP2 domain controller on a
VMWare Esx server. The VM has 1 CPU and 1 GB RAM allocated (adding up to 4 GB
did not make a difference).
Our application tries to dump the registry hives to files and it gets the
1450 error ("insufficient system resources...") on the SOFTWARE hive. The
hive is not extremely big (exporting it from registry editor results in a
~75MB file).
I have created a very basic sample application that just opens the registry
key and calls the RegSaveKey API and we get the same error.
Strangely, the "reg.exe" tool, which I would expect to use the same APIs, is
successful and it results in a ~35MB file; I have used the save parameter,
not the export which would generate a similar file with the one resulted when
exporting from Registry Editor.
I have tried to set the PoolUsageMaximum and the PagedPoolSize according to
some KBs but it did not make any difference. Moreover, the theoretical limit
for paged pool memory on 64-bit Windows is 128GB, while I can see that, when
trying to save the SOFTWARE hive, the Total Kernel Memory grows up to less
than 100 MB before returning the insufficient resources error.
If I use the 32-bit version of my sample tool, I get the error even when
trying to only dump the SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft key (although it
worked on all subkeys); the 64-bit version is able to save the
SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node but it fails with the same error on the SOFTWARE alone.
There are many customers that use our application without any such problem
so I am pretty sure that it is only a Windows configuration issue, but I
can't get it working.
The sample application that I use to repro the problem just calls:
EnablePrivilege(sComputer, SE_BACKUP_NAME);
LONG rc = ERROR_SUCCESS;
HKEY hKey = HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, hKeyToSave = NULL;
REGSAM regMask = KEY_READ;
rc = RegCreateKeyEx(hKey, sRegKey, 0, NULL, REG_OPTION_BACKUP_RESTORE,
regMask,NULL,&hKeyToSave, NULL);
if (rc != ERROR_SUCCESS) {
_tprintf(_T("RegCreateKeyEx error %u (%s)\n"), rc, sRegKey);
break;
}
rc = RegSaveKey(hKeyToSave, sFile, NULL);
Does anyone have any idea what can be wrong? Tag: Windows 2003 with IIS Tag: 114955
64-bit for VM's?
We are going to host 3 VM's on a 64GB server. The host OS is going to
be some version of Windows. Does it have to be a 64-bit OS like
Win2k3?
Also: if 64-bit Win2k3 is used as host, do the VM's have to be 64-bit
OS as well? Is the RAM going to be partitioned into 2 GB for each VM?

policies
Hello there,
I have 3 questions re. AD policies.
1. Can I set up a policy to have specific users local admins only to
their local machines[not to all machines] or this is not possible?
2. Where in W2K3 Gpedit group policies I can check for a policy that
automatically removes everyone from local admin group on local
machines, since this is the problem I am having?
3. If I set up a local XP machine policy will it get overwritten by AD
server policy at login?

Syslog server & parse/search/alert ability
Hi,
I need to get a syslog server up on a windows server that is going to
take syslog messages from windows servers & about 100 routers. I am
looking at several options but would like to see what others may have
used. One of the options I am looking at is Splunk and was wondering
if anyone could comment on this, or if anyone had used ManageEngine's
EventLog Analyzer.
Thanks for any help, opinions, and advice.

Blank screen after Windows 2003 splash screen
I went to reboot a Windows 2003 Enterprise Server and upon the reboot and
Windows 2003 Splash screen it went blank and never came back. I have not
updated anything on the server. I found that if I go into F8 services and use
the last known good it sometimes comes back. The only thing updated on the
server was applications, such as COM+ packages. Has anyone seen this before?
If no OS patches have been installed, or system changes what would be causing
this?

Replication
Hi,
I have two servers...one in a domain'd network, and one on a workgroup.
I have tried using DFS and the files / folders do transfer correctly.
However, when I access the folder locally on the source server I cannot
access it, i.e. c:\temp is not accessible. Also, a random folder was created
with a folder name of DFS01-02938 etc which contained the same data.
DFS doesnt seem to be the best way to do this, so what other ways of
replicating files/folders from one server to another on different networks
without having to purchase anything extra?
Thanks
