Backup Admin account sugestions
I created BackupAdmin account in domain, assinged account to be member
od Backup Operators and Domain Admins. I used complex password. I
configure all backup procedures to run via Backup Admin user.
Purpose of this account is to serve only for backup needs or for
starting services. Password will not be changing for this account.
I would like also to implement policy for this account to deny logon
locally and interactivly.
Should I fall in trap here causing services and scheduled tasks to
stop?
Any suggestions? Tag: Windows Media Services and Subtitles Tag: 116187
USB not recognised after re-boot
Just added a simple external USB drive to a server to act as a secondary
backup device.
Working fine until a re-boot following M/S updates.
Now it is not recognised. I doubt if it were the actual updates. I
suspect that the drive is just not being seen as it is already plugged
in. However, it does see the USB tape drive OK.
Anyone know how to get the box to scan the USB ports and pick up the
drive?
I typically RDC into this machine as its 25 miles away.

Problem with deleting account profile - cannot delete folder
I deleted an account using DELPROF from the Resource Kit, but it exited with
an error, saying that the directory was not empty, or something like that.
The user account folder in Documents and Settings was still there, but only
containing an empty folder called Cookies.
I cannot delete Cookies in explorer or the command line - Access Denied.
The Properties for the folder does not have a Sharing or Security tab, so I
cannot take ownership that way. Only the General and Customise tabs appear.
I cannot use CACLS to take ownership either - Access Denied.
I cannot delete the user profile folder that contains this undeletable
Cookies folder using RD Cookies /S - Access Denied.
Also, the original account that I deleted, with only these two nest empty
folders remaining, still appears with NET USER. I suppose because DELPROF
did not complete, there are still some registry entries for it in the HKU
hive, or something?
How do I delete this weird folder, and will I be able to remove the profile
from the NET USER list by running DELPROF again after I do delete it?
Cheers

Windows Fax in Win Server 2003
I was using Windows Fax on my terminal server running Win 2003 Server. It
worked OK for years and I would route the incoming faxes to a folder on the
network. Recently there were lines missing on each received fax so I tried
to install a new fax program that would allow me to make flow control
changes, unlike the Windows fax program/service. The new program didnâ??t work
at all so I reinstalled Windows fax except now I cannot route the received
faxes to the old folder that used to receive them or any other folder for
that matter, regardless of their permissions. When I try to set the routing
up in the configuration wizard or directly in the device properties, I get
the following error message: The FaxService cannot access the folder
specified. This didnâ??t happen in the past and Iâ??m pulling my hair out trying
to figure out how to correct it. I have this problem regardless of whether
Iâ??m logged on as the network administrator or the local computer
administrator. Please help.

xp ftp behind stock SBserver 2003 works ONCE after xp reboot...
multiple XP Pro stations going through an SBS2003 box, internet works
fine.
However, if one ftp's from an XP box to an external site, it will Only
work after the
xp box is rebooted, and ONLY the first time - every subsequent ftp
immediately gets connection closed. If i turn on the ftp service on
SBS2003,
then of course ftp works fine, but only to the server, not to the
outside
world. I'm at a loss to explain this behavior - can anyone offer a
guess as
to whether the problem lies on the XPP boxes, or on the SBS2003
box??? It
seems it must be the SBS2003 box, as the connection to external sites
does
actually work the one time... And please, no debate about using ftp -
the real
problem is a program that uses ftp in the background, so ftp Must
work! And no,
rebooting the box each time won't work, because the program first does
a test
connection when it starts (which works) then it goes to the main
screen, re-opens
an ftp connection to send the real data, which fails... Lovely, eh? Tag: Windows Media Services and Subtitles Tag: 116176
View actual server display
I am using Remote Desktop to connect into our server. However, I cannot see
any windows that are popped up on the server display. We have a scheduled
task that runs a process and if that process fails it leaves a pop-up error
message window that I can only see by going to the server and looking at the
display.
Is there any way to see exactly what is showing on the server display so
that I can close the pop-up window from my desktop? Thanks.

What's the basic recovery method for the following scenario?
1) Windows Server 2003 Standard (runnign purely as the single network domain
controller)
2) A small 15-user network, single domain
3) Have a good "system state" backup available from ntbackup
4) Hard drive failed / server crash.
Recovery method???...
1) Replace failed hard drive
2) Reinstall Windows 2003 Standard fresh
3) Run restore of "system state" backup?

mbr to gpt disks
We have to expand our disk space on our file server, we are running out of
disk space. Unfortunately to do so would go over 2 tb so we have to convert
from mbr to gpt. I thought this would be seamless, i.e add the disks in raid
the go into windows disk manager and convert.
To my horror according to microsoft you have to delete the partition then
convert to gpt then you have to go through the hassle of restoring your
data. Is there any way of doing this without have to delete data and
restore? Tag: Windows Media Services and Subtitles Tag: 116128

Programs to Backup DHCP, Active Directory, Registry, Etc
Aside from doing a full system state backup, does anyone know of a program
that would maintain a full set of Daily / Weekly / Monthly backups the
Windows DHCP, Active Directory, and Registry? I realize it is not brain
surgery to write it yourself, but I would value having some high quality
commercial software for such an undertaking as well, mainly for error

Share/NTFS Permissions - grant more rights further down the tree
Can someone please assist to help me achieve this?
I have a folder structure similar to this
-\Shared\Data1\Data2
I have 2 groups of people
Everybody
Admins
I need to achieve the following permissions to these folders for these groups
Data1 - Everybody=R; Admins=C
Data2 - Everybody=C; Admins=C
Now, I can easily achieve rights for Everybody by granting 'C' permissions
to 'Share' for the 'Everyone' group; assigning 'R' perms to 'Data1' for
'Everyone and 'C' perms to 'Data2'.
And for Admins, I have granted 'C' perms to the 'Share' for the 'Admins'
group; assigned 'C' perms to both 'Data1' and 'Data2' for 'Admins'.
Testing shows that the permissions for Everybody works as intended, but the
permissions for Admin follow the security of Everybody and they have only 'R'
perms to 'Data1'.
Now I suspect that this is to do with the fact that Admins are members of
both the 'Everyone' and 'Admins' groups. I'd appreciate confirmation of this
from someone who knows for sure.
I'd also appreciate any suggestions you may have for how I can achieve the
above. Tag: Windows Media Services and Subtitles Tag: 116117

2. How to block some specific websites through server 2003 by using group
policy? I have already listed the websites that I want to block in server by

Applying your personal settings
My server did a hard stop this afternoon (0x000000 from what I could see).
The machine rebooted but when I logged on the machine sat at "Applying your
personal settings" for 20 minutes before I forced a hard reset, which of
course made the server run a chkdsk on the volume that takes well over 30
minutes to complete.
What makes a server lock up on "Applying... "? I've seen it before and
could only fix it by rebooting into safe mode, logging on, then immediately
rebooting normally. I've found many fixes for the problem for client
machines, but not a single fix for when a 2003 server is doing it.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Tag: Windows Media Services and Subtitles Tag: 116109

Odd password issue
Running Windows 2000 Advanced Server.
We have encountered a very odd password situation. When logging into the
server (the domain controller) as administrator the password must be
entered in all caps. When logging into a workstation as administrator
the password can be entered normally and does not need to be entered in
all caps. Neither administrator has done anything with password
functions. It is almost as if the login prompt for the DC is confused
about the caps lock being on. This situation occurs when sitting in
front of the server's keyboard as well as with remote VNC connections.
Because of this fact we do not suspect a flaky keyboard on the server.
Does anyone have any idea of what is going on?
Suddenly, as I was about to post this, the password situation seems to
have cleared itself up. Very odd. Tag: Windows Media Services and Subtitles Tag: 116101

Is this normal use of paging? Or is there something I can do to fix this?

Hyper-V Update on Windows Web Server 2008?
Hello,
I'm wondering if anyone tried to install Hyper-V Release Update (KB950050)
on Windows Web Server 2008 x64? It has shown up recently in my Windows
Update as a recommended download, but as far as I know, Web Server is not
licensed to have Hyper-V role installed. I would go for it providing it is
some kind of management tools only - I don't want a full Hyper-V on my web
server as it would mess it up... Could someone please help me? What exactly
will be installed after KB950050 on Web Server x64? Is it safe to install in
this scenario?

File and Folder Permissions
Hi,
Running Windows Server 2003 SP2. Have problem with users saving files to a
network share. When they click save as in Excel, it says that the file
already exists (which it does not) then says that the folder is marked as
read only (again, which it is not). The file is created with a 0Kb size.
Share permissions are set to full control, and folder permissions are as
follows:
read, write and execute.
I tried using notepad to do the same thing, and works like a charm, even
though it also says that the file already exests, but allows you to save the
file with the data in it.
What am I missing here?

Running VPN/NAT on a web server
Hi everybody
First let me explain my server
I have a dedicated web server with os windows server 2003 standard r2,
server hast xeon dual core and 2 gb ram
this is our production server and we have 5 websites online on thie server
these web sites are sensitive and should be online always, the server is in
another country so the only access to that is RDP that I use that with full
admin access.
Fore some reason I have to use my server internet services at my home , I
mean I want create a VPN/NAT services on the server and connect with vpn to
my server and using NAT to use server internet connection instead my ISP
internet connection.
But the problem is that because I'm using windows firewall to secure my
server , when I want to config Routing and Remote Access , it says you habe
to disabe windows firewall services , if I disable that windows is under
security risk , but I know that VPN/NAT have a firewall like windows firewall
, but I scare about that I scare of blocking my self , and even I can't
access RDP .
So please let me know how can I config this server as VPN/NAT server without
blocking myself and also configuring firewall for my server and more
important that everything I don't want anything happend to web server , it
should remain as a web server also .
