Hyper-V Update on Windows Web Server 2008?
Hello,
I'm wondering if anyone tried to install Hyper-V Release Update (KB950050)
on Windows Web Server 2008 x64? It has shown up recently in my Windows
Update as a recommended download, but as far as I know, Web Server is not
licensed to have Hyper-V role installed. I would go for it providing it is
some kind of management tools only - I don't want a full Hyper-V on my web
server as it would mess it up... Could someone please help me? What exactly
will be installed after KB950050 on Web Server x64? Is it safe to install in
this scenario?
Thanks in advance,
Best regards,

File and Folder Permissions
Hi,
Running Windows Server 2003 SP2. Have problem with users saving files to a
network share. When they click save as in Excel, it says that the file
already exists (which it does not) then says that the folder is marked as
read only (again, which it is not). The file is created with a 0Kb size.
Share permissions are set to full control, and folder permissions are as
follows:
read, write and execute.
I tried using notepad to do the same thing, and works like a charm, even
though it also says that the file already exests, but allows you to save the
file with the data in it.
What am I missing here?

Running VPN/NAT on a web server
Hi everybody
First let me explain my server
I have a dedicated web server with os windows server 2003 standard r2,
server hast xeon dual core and 2 gb ram
this is our production server and we have 5 websites online on thie server
these web sites are sensitive and should be online always, the server is in
another country so the only access to that is RDP that I use that with full
admin access.
Fore some reason I have to use my server internet services at my home , I
mean I want create a VPN/NAT services on the server and connect with vpn to
my server and using NAT to use server internet connection instead my ISP
internet connection.
But the problem is that because I'm using windows firewall to secure my
server , when I want to config Routing and Remote Access , it says you habe
to disabe windows firewall services , if I disable that windows is under
security risk , but I know that VPN/NAT have a firewall like windows firewall
, but I scare about that I scare of blocking my self , and even I can't
access RDP .
So please let me know how can I config this server as VPN/NAT server without
blocking myself and also configuring firewall for my server and more
important that everything I don't want anything happend to web server , it
should remain as a web server also .

Task Scheduler IGNORES duration
OK, I have a sched. task in Windows Server 2008 64 Bit RTM Enterprise,
that fires (sorry, I mean sexy new term "Triggers") on second Thursday
of every month, then repeats every hour. However, although I ask it to
stop after 6 hours,it keeps going & going up to 8 hours now and
counting!!!!!!
I am seeing posts on this in Vista groups also (no surprises there -
same kernel). So, can MS admit this is a bug and advise when this will
be dealt with please?

RSM eject command line errors, Help please
In my backup scripts for Windows 2003 server we use rsm eject /LF"Library_id"
/Astart and it ejects the tapoe all the time.
When I send the same in Windows XP it says Additional arguments required. I
have no idea what additional arguments are required. It is an HP USB DAT 72
Tape Drive, and it works perfectly on a Windows 2003 server, but not on
Windows XP. I even tried the Guid and changing the command to /LG"GUID" but
it still says additional arguments required.
Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

roaming profile won't delete
I'm having a problem with a network logon searching for a roaming profile
even though the roaming profile path has been deleted from the user's
properties on the server.
Problem began when my PDC hard drive crashed and I wound up having to
reformat and rebuilt a new PDC server from scratch, though the roaming
profiles were stored on another drive that was not lost.
However, in the new AD, I did not recreate the roaming profile path, but
when the user logs on to the network, he's told his roaming profile cannot be
fround.
I went into the work station and checked the USER and deleted the RP path,
but the problem persists. It also happens when I try to log on as that user
from any other computer in the network.
So how can I get rid of this "ghost" of a roaming profile? Tag: Which service consumes resurses Tag: 116037

Setting page file via script/command line for windows 2008
Hi all,
im trying to set the size of the pagefile on all windows
2008 servers we build with MDT.
I've found my existing scripts seem to not work in 2008.... they are
modified versions of
http://www.myitforum.com/articles/11/view.asp?id=6914
and
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/scriptcenter/scripts/default.mspx?mfr=true
While they run through fine, no actual updates are made to the
pagefile.
I have also found that the "old" disable firewall scripts dont work on
windows 2008.
If anyone has confirmed working versions on win 2008, help would be
appreciated. Tag: Which service consumes resurses Tag: 116030
Move CA from W2k3 DC to W2k8 DC
We are not sure what path we want to take concerning our CA server. It is an
Enterprise CA on a W2K3 domain controller that needs to be decomissioned due
to age of hardware. We are looking for the best approach..
Here are our thoughts and options:
1. Move the CA server to a new W2K8 Std x64 Edition server that will be a DC
2. Promote the W2K8 server to be a DC, Create a new CA server on the new
W2K8 server, create new certificates and decommission the old CA.
We have issued a very small number of certificates for in-house use. Also,
we are not tied to keeping the same server name. From KB298138, I see that we
will need to keep the the same server name, and upgrade the W2K3 server to
W2K8 before moving the CA.
Another challenge is the W2K8 server will be a DC. Do I promote the server
to a DC before moving the old or creating a new CA?
Any thoughts or ideas?

DHCP - Dual purpose Server (Backup Scopes & Active Scopes)
Hi!
I've installed DHCP on our win2kr2 server's at our 11 branches.
For DR, I have a DHCP installed on a "DC" back in our corporate office.
IT has been fully configured for branch "backup" scope's that do not conflict.
I've enabled helper services on the routers at the branch.
Everything is great!!
I've tested the DR approach and it works!!
Awesome! Now it's time to put our corporate office on DHCP!!
Q: Can I use the same backup server as a primary active scope for the
corporate office? Basically dual purpose the server?
Q: Is there any draw backs in my plan to use a "DC" as a DHCP server? I
already had one issue to work through where by I had to add a membership
group to local admin because it was a DC.
Q: Should of I used a "member server instead?" Tag: Which service consumes resurses Tag: 116016

those I woudl liek for them to be able to get the new address to use the
fiber connection 1st and then I will reprogram the manual ones. IS there
anyway to do this? Shoudl I just plug both routers into my server switch. OR
should I pluf the fiber ethernet into my dhcl dc1 nic 2? Tag: Which service consumes resurses Tag: 116012
Domain login errors
Hello,
We recently installed a new Windows 2003 server; set it up as an additional
domain controller; transferred the FSMO roles from our existing Windows 2000
DC server; demoted our old server and removed it from the network. We have
approxiametly 200 clients that login to our network. 25% Vista Business and
75% XP Pro. Since the change over we are getting "The system cannot login
because the domain (example) is not available.". We don't get the message on
all of the clients, only on about 25 machines. I've disjoined and rejoined
them to the domain with no problems. The Vista machines work with no
problems, we've only seen the problem on XP. If I login locally and UNC map
to the server, authenticate, logout, then try logging in to the domain, it
works fine. We've had the problem on new clients and clients that have been
on the domain for years. Any suggestions that you have would be greatly
appreciated.
Thanks,

Changing IP of DHCP server
I'm going to be changing the IP address of my DNS/DHCP server on friday and
I just wanted to find out if there is anything to look out for? I attempted
this change last night(re-IPed from 10.65.6.60 to 10.65.6.84) and the dhcp
service ended up listening on .60 until I restarted it(which is fine..) but
then later it unauthorized itself..
I suspect there may have been a conflict in AD so I'm suspecting I'll need
to unauthorize before I re-IP.. then maybe reboot the host(to ensure all
services restart..) then re-authorize. How long should I allow between
authorizations? just typical AD replication?
The reason for the re-IP is I'm moving it into production and I want to
retain the same IP of the old dns/dhcp server. Tag: Which service consumes resurses Tag: 116007

2008 Terminal Server Licensing
I am bringing up my first 2008 terminal server. When I install terminal
services it says that I need to connect to my license server.
My 2003 License server is a Win 2003 Domain Controller.
All my Terminal Services CALS were purchased with Software Assurance, so
they will not need to be replaced with 2008.
Will my 2008 Terminal server, recognize these Terminal Servers CALS on this
License server?
Will I need to install a 2008 License server?
Will I need to contact Microsoft to get the MTS CALs installed on the 2008
license server (If one is needed)?
Is there anything else that it sounds like I am missing?

WMI Problem
[also posted on microsoft.public.dotnet.framework.wmi]
I have .NET 2.0 SP1, .NET 3.0 SP1 and .NET 3.5 running on a Windows Server
2003 R2 SP2, fully patched. It is NOT a DC.
I have some WMI errors that apparently need .NET 3.5 SP1 (which isn't out
yet, and I've tried but can't get the hotfix that will correct the problem),
and am hoping that .NET 3.5 with n o errros in the WMI Diagnostic utility
will do the trick.
I ran it just now and it came back with a statement that WMI is operating
correctly. However, the .txt file that was generated had some errors that I
feel I should fix. However, I haven't a clue on how to do it in

And how does its configuration audit work? What if someone clears the audit
log? Can Ecora still get this information?
What other products are out their?
Are they effective?
Which is the cheapest product out in the market.

Unable to join memberserver from remote location
Ladies and Gents,
I got a database server on a remote location which I want to join to my new
active directory infrastructure based on 2003. The database server has an IP
address of 172.1.9.2/16 and my dc's in the main location 10.0.216.1/21 and
10.0.216.2/21. From both location I am able to ping etc. Now when I want to
join the database server I am unable to do so. After I putted in the
credentials I recieve after 10-15 sec the error "The RPC server is
unavailable". All ports are open between my main and remote location. Anyone
got an answer?
Below a copy of netsetup.log from the database server

Installing DFS on a Transitioned Small Business Server
Hi All,
Up until recently, we were running Small Business Server 2003 R2. We have
now installed the transition pack on this server to now make it a full
Windows 2003 Server (R2 I assume)
I want to use the R2 version of DFS as we have branch offices that will
benefit greatly from this but I cannot install Distributed File System from
the Add/Remove Windows Components.
Can someone please help me get DFS on this server? Tag: Which service consumes resurses Tag: 115967
Using SMS 2003 for workstation installations
Am new to SMS. To do a client push of an application silently onto
workstations using SMS, must I use an MSI package? Can the vendor simply
supply an installation exe that requires no user interaction to install the
app onto a remote workstation thru SMS?
Thanks for any and all ideas,

Upgrade Windows 2003 Standard to Enterprise (In-Place upgrade)
I am checking to see if in-place upgrade is available from windows 2003
standard to enterprise. If we do so, will data (it's a SQL server) be
preserved or such in-place upgrade is not suggested, or too much risk?
Thanks for the advise. Tag: Which service consumes resurses Tag: 115957
Windows Live Communication Server 2005 - Web Access
Having some problems with LCS 2005 web access whilst trialing it for
production use.
I'm getting an error 1 when logging on, and various websites have pointed
towards a problem with the certificate. Now I'm not a big fan of
certificates, and will admit to not knowing much about the implementation
with Certificate Services in Svr 2003.
I've requested a certificate from the CA with the name of the FQDN machine
with web access installed on it. Could anyone give me some advice or a
resource that has step-by-step guides on how to implement both Web Access
and LCS 2005. Tag: Which service consumes resurses Tag: 115952
Change all admin account descriptions?
We already have a GPO in place to rename all our local administrator
accounts to another name, but the problem is someone can still tell straight
off (i know the SID could give it away too) that it's the admin account
since it's description still says it's the administrator account... is there
anyway to change this local admin description though a GPO or simple script
on a remote computer to say something different? thanks! Tag: Which service consumes resurses Tag: 115951
Print spooler
Another IT guy came in to remove a Print Spooler T virus from my customer's
server. Now when I try to reload a print driver the systems tells me that
the print spooler service is not started. When I go to services to start her
print spooler I get the message:
Could not start the print spooler.
Error3: The system cannot find the path specified.
Can you point me in the right direction?

Interact with a program
I am at a loss, we have a program for scheduling rooms. I would like to make
the scheduler interactive. Right now the program is used by an office staff.
The objective is to have the schedule appear on a website and have the users
view the schedule for room availability. The program has the capabilities
for doing so but I do not know how to go about it. What I would really like
is to have an embedded code on the web page to gain access to view the
scheduler. I guess the question is what do I need equipment wise? How would
I access it through the internet? Tag: Which service consumes resurses Tag: 115944
Creating log in Performance Monitor for Multiple Win2k3 Servers
I'm a newbie in Performance Monitor. I have to create one which is the same
for quite some number of window 2003 servers, which has > 30 counters.
Apart from going from Start> Programs> Admin Tools> Performace> Counter
Logs> Create new log and add the counters manually in each server, is there
any better/ faster method that I can create a log to every servers? a script
or whatever...sorry but I just dont have any idea.

Download Process Explorer from Microsoft's website - it's a vry nice
Sysinternals tool. It should help you figure out what's what.
