    - Help with Terminal Server Licensing Does anyone understand Terminal Server Licensing ? Looking on the internet it appears a lot of network administrators out there are having the same issues as me, why is this so complicated? I have purchased 12 Device CALs and have setup a Terminal Server License Server and installed the CALs. I have configured a seperate server as a Terminal Server. However the terminal server currently is in its 120 day grace period. I want the License Server to issue the CALs to the Terminal Server but the Terminal Server keeps prompting that there are no Terminal Server Licensing Servers available, although the License Server can be seen on the network, can ping it etc and it's in the same domain / workgroup. There are no firewalls so nothing is being blocked between the license server and terminal server. I'm resorting to this newsgroup because I have looked on the internet and attempted all the resolutions that are out there such as enabling License Server Security group in Group Policy on the License Server, but this doesn't give me the Terminal Services Computer group as it suggests it would when enabled. I've tried creating the registry keys on the Terminal Server, this doesn't do anything and there is no where in Terminal Services Configuration on the Terminal Server to point it to the license server. Can anyone explain what is going on? Is this one of those Microsoft flaws?! I did read somewhere that Microsoft didn't finish their Terminal Server coding in time before release of Windows 2003 Server ... is this my problem? Do I need to apply any patches or service packs? I've purchased my CALs, Microsoft have had their money, how do I use the CA:Ls? Because I'm sure that when this grace period expires it'll be prompting me to install the CALs !     - Windows ent 2003 sever hangs the PDC server hangs windows ent 2003 server sp2, there are not errors in the event viewer. it hangs once or twice a week , not at the same hour. it began doing it 5 month ago. Hardware seems ok. HP ML370 G4. i see the explorer is hang because there are no taskbar, also nobody can connect to the applications, the services are not working. The network is ok, ping is responding.     - Internet through VPN Hi, I have a SBS2003 on a location A. There is RRAS activated and fully functional. With VPN I can connect to location A from a location B with a Windows XP Client. Everything works fine - too fine for me... my Problem is, that the XP-Client on location B has also access to the Internetconnection of location A! cause of my bad english i will explain it clearly with IPs: On location B the XP Client has the IP 192.168.0.10 There is a Router with IP 192.168.0.1 The Router is the Gateway for that XP-Client The SBS on location A has the IP 10.0.0.2 There is also a Router with IP 10.0.0.1 The Router is the Gateway for this Network When i make a tracert www.google.com on the XP-Client the first IP reached is the local Router (192.168.0.1) - so far so good - When I now connect from location B through VPN to location A then the XP-Client on B, of course, gets a 2nd Networkconnection named "VPN-Test". With this connection XP changes its Default-Gateway to the 10.0.0-Subnet! When I now make a tracert www.google.com then the first IP reached is the Router of the location A! So every XP-Client use the Internet-Connection of location A as far as they are connected through VPN! They use not there own local Router! I know, I easiely can change the checkbox "Use default gateway on remote network" on every XP-Client to solve this problem. But thats not enough security! It is still possible to have access to the internet from a XP-Client through the VPN. So it is still possible that a user on one XP-Client changes this option back to its default and so using the Internetconnection of my SBS2003. And further - I don't have access to every XP-Client, so I can not be sure that every Client has this option set well. So now finaly my question: what do i have to set up on my SBS2003 that the VPN-Clients are not allowed to use the Internet-Connection of my SBS2003? The VPN-Clients get their IPs from the SBS-own DHCP and also use the SBS-own DNS... The VPN-Clients need access to the SBS2003-Server as well as to the rest of the Network on location A! The XP-Clients from location B need access to some Clients in the Network of location A! Else it would be possible to deactivate the routing-option of the RRAS - but not in my case.     - Hotfix Removal I have a general questions i was working on a server we were having problems with and i was told by support to install Kb943669 after we installed this Hotfix it made the situation worse. I looked up the hotfix i found out that it has absolutly nothing to do with our specific issue. If i remove the hotfix will the removal turn all the previous setting back to normal. Or will the same issues still be there after the hotfix is removed because it already adjusted hte settings? I am just wondering if someone know what the actual removal of a hotfix does?     - OEM Windows Server 2003 Guys I am in the need of some assistance. I have a client that has a server that was so fouled that it needed a format and reinstall the problem is that my copy of Server 2003 standard 5 client has a huge ass scratch in it and I am unable to use. Now here is where it gets bad I talked to the OEM and they are unable to provide me with a replacement disk and when I go back to Microsoft I am told to go back to the hardware vendor.     - Windows Server 2008 Backup I installed Windows Server Backup and have the following situation: When I run anything but scheduled backup, I am provided a window showing local devices to back up the files to. When I select Scheduled Backup and select the files to be backed up, I get an error msg stating there is no local drive to back the files up to instead of the Local Drive option screen.     - keep getting kicked out Hi, We have a Microsoft Server 2003 with 3 computers (XP Pro) connecting via a LAN to synchronise files in the shared folders. There is also a Draytek Vigor 2800 router for internet access with a static IP and DHCP disabled. The server is giving out the IP's for the client computers but about twice a day the clients are going 'Off Line', they loose their IP address (it reverts to 169.xxx....) and are unable to access the server or get onto the internet or print (The printer is set up through the server). I have tried giving the clients static IP's but the same thing happens anyway. I have also tried disabling and enabling the LAN connection on the clients. I can log on to the router from outside the LAN which has it's own static WAN and LAN IP but the server is not pingable (timed out). I reboot the server and the clients are then given an IP and we are back up and running. I have checked the Event Viewer but there doesn't seem to be anything relevant and there certainly isn't anything that relates to the times the connection is lost. 2 of the clients that are always on loose the connection about 5 minutes apart. One computer will say it is off line and 5 minutes later the other one will loose it too. First, I would like any advice about what might cause this on the server because I am sure rebooting it twice a day isn't normal. Also, could I take DHCP away from the server and give it to the Router instead? Why do they loose connection even when they have a static IP? Because of this I don't think getting the IP from the Router will make any difference. When the server decides it wants to close it's connection it will. Any advice greatly appreciated.     - Giving contract developer access I'm a small business owner which makes me the System Administrator of my web and database servers. In the past I've given contractors Administrative rights when they used the machines, but now I'm starting to use developers from other countries and they are logging in via the WAN. My question is there a way to give a contractor access to the machine to create SQL databases, websites, create directories, change file permissions, etc. without being an administrator, and even blocking access to files I don't want them to?     - Server Standard 2003; I want more than 4gb ram! I asked a question earlier about installing Server Standard 64-bit, but no one told me if I can use the same license for both editions. Second, is there a way to run more than 4gb of ram on the 32-bit version. It seems pretty arbitrary that the enterprise version can use /PAE and Standard can't.     - Folder Redirection So, I set up the Default Domain Policy under Group Policy Management in Server Manager in Windows Server 2008 for Folder Redirection. The settings I chose were Basic (Redirect everyone's folder to the same location), and under Target Folder Location, "Create a folder for each user under the root path" was chosen. The Root Path is set as \ \SageRealtyDC.SageRealty.local\SageRealtyUsers. I set up SageRealtyUsers as a Share and gave Everyone Full Control. From most of what I read on the subject of Folder Redirection, this should create a folder in the SageRealtyUsers folder when the user logs in using this new policy for the first time, and copy the My Documents folder there.     - Windows 2003 DHCP Server Hello all I am hoping you can help me. I have just migrated from Netware DHCP to Windows 2003 DHCP. We are one of the departments in a county that need some access to resources in the Main Downtown Office - Timesheet and Fiscal stuff - but for the most part we host all of our own services. This system has been in place for 2 or 3 years and works good until the migration of DHCP services this last Friday. All of our stuff locally works great and the server gives all of the IP info we need however we cannot load web based apps that connect to to our downtown office anymore. What is wierd is if I go to some of the problem PCs and type in the TCPIP info manually, I can get to the apps we need just fine, it is only when we allow those PCs to accept the DHCP address that nothing works. We use DNS Forwarding for the downtown domain, and I also have to push their WINs serves addresses form our DHCP server to have everything work, but as I said this system has been working great until the DHCP migration. I can ping all of the servers both by name and IP, we need on their system only if I type the TCPIP information manually on any PC on our network, if we allow DHCP to give the same TCPIP information we cannot ping them at all. I think I am missing a piece of the puzzle but am not sure what it is and was hoping you all could help us put our finger on it.     - SPA 2.0 (Server Performance Advisor) As a replacement to the oild PerfMon, SPA is a very good monitoring tool. I am currently running SPA Data Collector scans daily on some servers which send their data to a dedicated SPA Report server. Now I want to graduate to using SQL so that I can ty out the SPA Trending feature. The Help File item for Trending is fairly brief: "To set up trending, right-click a data collector group, and then click Properties. Under Report Trending Database, type the name of the SQL database where you want to store the trend data, and then type the NetBIOS name of the SQL server that hosts the database." I set up SQL Express 2005 on the Report server and have done the above, but I'm sure there must be something else I must do above and beyond just creating an empty table in SQL Express that the SPA data is pointng to. No data as of now is being sent to SQL Express. I of course did not create any tables (just a new db) as I was hoping that the first batch of data sent to SQL would create the db strucutre, but that did not happen. I am an employee of a small company that has an HP Proliant ml350 Windows 2003 Standard server that is about 4 years old and has drives about to fail. I have been tasked with moving the server to new hardware, but I am new to server management in general. Some day the Server 2000 failed, I installed Windows server 2000 on the another machine. and then restored the files. But I found that the InDesign with the linked graphic eps files has been broken, I have to re-link again, pretty annoying. Even I installed the Windows server 2003 with the same ip address, the same Server Name, the same shared paths as previous server, and then isolate that Server machine from the domain network by another network swith, and then restored the files. When I open the InDesign files, it prompt me to re-link the attached eps graphic files, but they should be linked automatically beforehand.     - How can I remove a started setup/installation of Windows Server 2003 Hello, Because on my server with Windows Server 2003 I had an error message "ntldr not found" I started it with the setup-CD. Actually I wanted to try to repair it. However, after initiating the setup it took quite long so in between I went to my work place. When I came back it was way down the installation procedure in the GUI part already but finally it couldn't find some files and stopped. Unfortunately now it always runs into the setup which does not work, I have no choice to boot in the old windows Server 2003 operating system. I tried F8 and chose last known good and again it runs into the erroneous setup. First I thought may be it has created a temporary setup partition and just rerouted the boot.ini into this setup. I checked the boot.ini with knoppix but it had only one line in it which the server uses for booting. Is there any way to remove the started setup and have the machine boot in the old windows server 2003 operating system?     - Server 2008: Print driver installation woes Hello all, I'm running into an unusual problem with my first Server 2008 installation: I can't change printer drivers unless I'm the local admin. When in Control Panel -> Printers, right-clicking on a printer + Properties yields the usual Printers dialog box. The driver is selected in the Advanced tab, but it's grayed out unless I'm the local Admin. * When logged in as MACHINE\Administrator, it works * When logged in as DOMAIN\appadmin, it's grayed out. I've confirmed that DOMAIN\appadmin is in the local Administrator's group, and this appadmin account has no trouble doing anything else Admin-y on the system: I can install software, create printer ports, etc. I just can't change the driver. Even going into the Registry to HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print and edit stuff manually - this account has the rights for it. I've searched high and low for information about this, to no avail. Is there some setting that I'm missing? Server 2003 definitely doesn't work this way.     - Permissions on large file server Hi all, I have a question about permissions on a large file server we have at the office. We set up the server with a large drive (d:), and have the default permissions on the root of the volume. We created directories in the volume, and defined explicit permissions, blocking inheritance, and removed all the default permissions barring the domain administrator, the groups that need access to the relevant folder, and the local administrator. We then shared the relevant directories out using share permissions as the relevant groups that need access. In the directories holding user profiles and the folders for the My Documents redirection, we created the relevant folders and added the relevant admin accounts to the list. We then added the domain users group to be able to view directories under this folder, but defined that this should only apply to the folder and nothing underneath it. This works well - when we create a user, we create the folder, and give the relevant user full control of the folder. The domain users group does not appear in this folder, and the parent permissions are inherited. We are now wanting to take this a step further, by looking at how specific users can gain access to the relevant folders for administrative purposes, such as to change permissions on the relevant folders (all folders on the server), without having to log in as the domain administrator. We are quite happy if they could log in under another domain account which has the relevant rights to do this, we just need them to log in under an account which will be audited, unlike the domain admin account, where anyone who knows the relevant passwords can gain access therein. Also, if there is a more secure way of doing the permissions for the relevant profile/redirection directories, I would be interested to know. We have seen for example that Vista (if left to create the relevant directories) seems to set explicit permissions to the user, barring the administrator or anyone else from accessing the files underneath (unless the admin takes ownership of the folder). We are using Windows Server 2003 R2 (SP2). Our domain is Windows Server 2008 native, so if there would be any advantage in us upgrading the file server to that, we would be interested to know.     - Server 2003 to log in automatically I would like to have one of my servers log in automatically on reboot. I found an article where I can change the registry values for DefaultUserName and DefaultPassword. So far this does work and when I reboot my server it is logged in automatically. I will create a GP so the server locks. Is there another way to have the server login autmatically than making the registry changes?     - Windows Universal Storage Server 2003 quits working I am having a problem with Windows Storage server . Every three weeks (to the day) stops communicating with the domain controllers. At first it seems like a network issue, but no other machines are affected (either servers or workstations). The symptoms are as follows: 1. Cannot remote desktop into the machine, says domain controller cannot be reached for authentication (UserEnv error ID 1053 occurs in Application log) 2. DFS Replication stops (of course it cannot find either DC, one of which it replicates to Event ID 5002) 3. Local workstations can access files, remote workstations that need to authenticate to acces files cannot 4. Not able to connect to internet through IE. IP configuration is correct on NIC card. 5. Recieve LSASRV error in system log, Event ID 40960 and NETLOGON error, Event ID 5719. There are no scheduled (anything) that corrosponds with the timing of this, and all processes, CPU, and memory seem normal. There are no additional error messages as to why this happens and all hardware seems to be working properly. A restart will fix this for the three week period. The only software installed is Veritas backup Exec Agent (which works normally), Veritas Continious Protection Server Agent (which quits working), and Trend Micro Client (set to scan in off hours, no real time scans) There is no known malware or viruses present on the system. The Server is a Dell NX1950 with a MD3000 Raid Enclosure. All Firmware, Bios, and MS patches are updated. If anyone has a clue as to what may be causing this, or if you need more information, let me know.     - question about recovering from tombstone Hi, I have to W2K3 domain controllers which haven't been used for a while. When I tried using them today, I got some domain not found errors on the clients. When I looked at the event logs on DC1, I saw some 2042 and 1388 errors. I tried to force replication between both DC1 and DC2 manually and it failed. Following http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc780362.aspx, I went to DC1 and used repadmin /removelingeringobjects to clobber all the directory partitions which were hosed. I then went to the other DC and it was giving me target not found errors when using /removelingeringobjects. Getting this error is a mystery as I=92m using repadmin /showrepl to get the target id in the first place and then paste it into the command =96 I would think there=92s zero chance of fat fingering it then! Afterwards, I rebooted both DCs and I was able to force replication manually from one of the DCs and not the other. Apparently, I've got some lingering objects on that second domain controller even though I'm getting target not found errors. Short of doing a demote and re-promote, is there anyway I can get both domain controllers out of the tombstone state? Suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks!     - DCPROMO This morning to promo'd out what I believed to be a NT BDC promoted to PDC, then upgraded to Win2000. The demotion I guess went ok, users can log in, no calls etc . . But when I look at our AD-DNS, the old DC is still listed as a name server. When I look at ADSites and Services, he's still listed in my site, but there is no NTDS listed. If I look at Computer Mangement\Sessions there are a handful of users connected, but no open files. And what's the deal in Sites and Services when links aren't automatically created? I forget. But I have a handful of links that were manually created... So - should I wait for my four sites to replicate for that old DC to drop out of DNS, and sites and services or do I have a problem?? When I tried to restart the Server service I would get a warning that one of the dependent services has been marked for deletion.     - server not accessible Hi, I have a webserver (windows 2003 standard) within a virtual system. The server wasn't reachable during a critical amout of time and I need to checkout if the reason came from my virtual instance or not. Beside the fact, that the event logs don't show any errors, there is one thing which is strange for me: The security event log usually shows daily events 552 (user: system, source: security), bot NOT during the two days, when the server was not accessible. In fact there is no entry in eventlog/security at all during the time, when I couldn't access my server. The server IS accessible now, because of a reboot by the hoster. If you wouldn't see any errors in the log files, what would you think about a virual webserver, which was not accessible?     - VPN Error 619 Hi, We need to connect with windows VPN to an external office but receive error 619: I thought the traffic was blocked by our netscreen firewall, but all outbound traffic is allowed. I opened also several incoming and outgoing ports (GRE, PPTP, L2TP, 1723) but that didn't solved the problem. The vpn connection is working perfect at home so something blocks the traffic.
