File Server Migration
We want to migrate our old file server to a new server running 2003 R2. The
main objective is to keep all mapped drives/printers and UNC paths the same
as the old path from the client perspective. All the current mappings have
been made manually not via a login script. I tested the File Server
Migration Toolkit in a lab. While the data and permissions migrated
flawlessly, sometimes the mapped drives did not resolve on the client side.
Do we have to use DFS to accomplish the above objectives? Has anyone else
had a similar scenario? Too eventually I will have another server to perform
the same task on. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Tag: Strong Authentication for Terminal Services Tag: 112577

Hi ,
I extended iSCSI filesystem on our EMC NAS device but when I used Diskpart
and run a scan we are unable to see the addition disk space on the host

Server 2008 Ent Remote Desktop
The computer is a new Dell Server and a fresh install of Server 2008
Enterprise. I have Remote Desktop enabled on the server utilized by the
wizard. Windows Firewall is on as is the public and private firewall. This
is an edge server so it has one public IP and a private IP. I get the same
results coming from both private and public IP.
I will use remote desktop to try to connect to the server, and the page will
come up telling me incorrect username or password. I know the password and
username are correct, but no matter what I type in I continuously get this
error while trying to remote into the machine. I have created a new account
with remote priveledges and tried that as well and it does not work either.
However, when I use either to log in locally, they work fine.
This is a fresh install with only the AD, DNS, and a few other services
configured but no software other than Server 2008 components. Tag: Strong Authentication for Terminal Services Tag: 112555
WMIC question
I don't see a specific group for WMIC questions so I'm trying this one....
I'm trying/playing with WMIC for the first time. I want to see a list of
installed software on a local computer, and output the list to an html file.
In a batch file I have these commands:
wmic /node:server01 os assoc

The batch file runs and the list of installed software scrolls by on the
screen but, the batch file ends with 2 error messages, both saying:
The filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect.
What is wrong with my syntax?

Password protected folders (after domain logon), with RUNAS comman
Hello.
I've been working on a way to password protect folders, even after the
domain logon, with the RUNAS command.
What I've done so far:
- Created a new user called "permission_folder1"
- Created a new folder called "folder1", removed all permissions from it,
and added the new user in the permission list.
- Created a shortcut, and added the runas command:
runas /user:domain\permission_folder1 "explorer.exe
\\server1\sharename\folder1"
When I try to open the shortcut, it will ask for password (for the
permission_folder1 user). If I type wrong password nothing happends, if I
type the right password it gives me a weird error, which I could find nothing
about on google:
RUNAS ERROR: Unable to run - explorer.exe \\server1\sharename\folder1
1385: Logon failure: the user has not been granted the requested logon type
at this computer
What does this mean? What can I do to fix it, if it's even possible?
It all takes place in a Windows enviroment, with a Windows 2003 Small
Business Server as DC, Windows Server 2003 as terminal server and Windows XP
as clients.
The shortcut doesn't work on the terminal server, nor the Windows XP clients.
The secondary logon service is running.
Might be worth mentioning that I can use:
runas /user:domain\permission_folder1 calc

Intermittent Network Pauses
Hi There,
We have a HP Class-C Chassis with 4 Blade servers, all running windows
server 2003. Two of these servers are clustered in Active Passive mode. This
cluster is connected to HP EVA3000 SAN array and the network interface of the
cluster connects to Cisco 3750 stack.
For the past number of months we have been having issues where the clients,
running windows XP lose their network drives and after a pause of approx
10-15 seconds reconnect and in many cases a reboot of the workstation is
required.
We have performed a number of test to isolate the root casue of the issue.
The network was fully checked and ruled out as the casue. Packet capture did
not reveal anything unusual, except traffic stopping from the cluster during
the pause.
We perfomed a number of tests on the cluster nodes and one of the tests was
a copy test.
We ran perfmon and started copying files between local drives and SAN drives.
Test1 :copy a Gigabyte file from Local C: to D:
Test2: copy the same file from local C: to SAN
Test3: Copy the same file from SAN to local C:
During all of the above tests we observed, on perfmon, the CPU utilsation
dropping to zero and the the network Interface utilisation dropping to zero
at exactly the same time. While the CPU utilisation recovered almost
immedailty, the network utilisation stayed at 0% for the duration of the copy.
These tests caused exactly the same outages that our users experience.
While this was happening I could still ping the server at all time.
The servers are running Windows 2003 Server SP2.
RSS is disabled on the Nics.
TOE is disabled.
Teaming is disabled as well.
Has anyone seen or had this or similar issues. Please help.

Offline File Weirdness
I've got a user having problems with offline files. His user profile is setup
on one of our Windows 2003 SBS boxes, and his laptop is setup to use it
offline when he's away from the office. Two files don't seem to get carried

folder will show these two files being present. Sure enough though, when he
gets home the shortcut to his vpn connection does nothing and Outlook has no
autocomplete. Outlook will then create a new autocomplete, which will inturn
over write the one stored on the server when he comes back to the office the
next day. Also, the rasphone.pbk just disappears and he vpn connection must
be recreated. Very frustrating. Any ideas guys and gals?

VSS snaps filling my drive
Hi,
Just got a warning from my monitoring software that my 400GB database drive
with around 100GB of Exchange information store is 75% full. I've seen this
before,
so went looking at the System Volume Information folder (after changing
permissions to allow me access to it) to discover that it had accumulated
200GB worth of snapshots over the past 2 months. Every day when Veritas BE
9.1 (yes, we're upgrading this year) kicks in, I get the following message
in my app log:
Event Type: Information
Event Source: MSExchangeIS
Event Category: Exchange VSS Writer
Event ID: 9604
Date: 5/1/2008
Time: 4:30:37 PM
User: N/A
Computer: PAGE
Description:
Exchange VSS Snapshot metadata document has been collected.
This is immediately followed by the Event ID 210 indicating that a full
backup of the Exchange DB has started. Backups appear to be ok.
Each of the files in the Sysvol folder is created at the exact time the
backup starts.
The only article I see on the Symantec/Veritas site talks about seeing these
files pile up if a Shadow Copy Component backup is cancelled
(http://seer.support.veritas.com/docs/269989.htm). Mine do not appear to be
cancelled, as the VSS components are being successfully backed up according
to the backup log. Anyway, the Veritas solution in the article is to stop
the Volume Shadow Copy Service on the server.
Questions:
1. If I disable the volume shadow copy service, what am I losing?
2. Can I safely disable the old files in the System Volume Information
folder?
3. Any other recommendations?
Thanks in advance,
Phil

1 backup Device or multiple
Hey all,
I need some *polite* argument points please :)
I work at a consulting company who manages networks for their
clients. I'm reletively new here but something strikes me as unusual:
In many cases, where there are multiple servers, they also use
multiple backup devices.
For example:
FS1 has a backup device
AS1 has a backup device
TS1 has a backup device
The argument they give is that it is more than a single point of
failure and if one backup failes or they forget to put in a tape, then
chances are that the other ones will pass. Basically they are not
relying on 1 tape drive to do it all (lets say use a 400/800 instead
of 3 x 200/400 lto drives).
To me this does not make sense from a financial point of view and a
managment point of view.
I want to bring this to the table but need solid arguments....any
ideas?
Thanks,

Windows XP Registry Repair
The Windows registry on your PC is a set of files which store all the
essential settings for hardware, the operating system, the control
panel, application software, user preferences and user profiles, and
file associations (which programs run which types of files).
How is Windows XP registry repair done, and why does the Windows
registry ever need to be repaired anyway? At the bottom of this
article, there is a link to a resource page which gives access to
software tools you can use to repair the registry.
Repairing or cleaning the registry can also be done manually, using
the program regedit.exe (Registry Editor), which comes with Windows
XP, or with reg.exe from the command line. Manual editing is not
recommended though, even if you do a backup, because the registry
files are absolutely essential for the Windows operating system to
run, and it is all too easy to damage them by careless editing.
Microsoft Support itself says this - 'Although you can use Registry
Editor to inspect and modify the registry, doing so is not
recommended, as making incorrect changes can damage your system.'...

ISA Svr and Terminal Server
I am looking for some best practices advice please.
We currently have to replace our ISA Svr box with new hardware. At the
moment this box only does this plus WSUS and virus management. Basically
nothing. However the organisation is about to install a TS server to
service about 60+ remote users. Originally we were going to place a
second box behind the ISA server to do this but wondered if the TS
workload could go on the ISA box to save on hardware?
So the question is: would it be ok to combine TS and ISA on the same box
or should we stick to the original plan of TS behind ISA? What do other
people do here?

Strange performance on Windows 2003 EE SP2
Hi all,
I met a strange performance issue on Windows 2003 Enterprise X64
Edition with SP2 / Intel Xeon 3G(4chips * 4cores/chip) .
On the server, there is a j2ee containner with some applications. A
simple jsp code to query/insert/update some tables after the client
clicked the submit. The clients complained that this update is slowly. I
did a test on both the server and another pc. The result is very strange:
From the server, the code executed costing 400ms, while 5+ seconds
from PCs! The execute time is output in the jsp code, such like:
System.out.println( new Date().getTime() );
..... do updates ...
System.out.println( new Date().getTime() );
I had done the test on a Windows 2003 EE 32Bit with SP2, the same result.
The SNP is disiabled on both boxes.
Any ideas?

Trying to Test Windows Server 2008 Terminal Services

saying " this feature is not supported", and I can go no further. I should
mention that my Vista SP1 is a virtual machine on the same Windows 2008
server, running under hyper-v. I'm too new to virtual machines to know if
that's causing my problem. I should also mention I tried to connect to

Recovery Console question
Folks:
I am making some changes to our SBS 2003 Server this weekend and some
questions have arisen that need fast answers... We are working on a server
which is a domain controller. (SBS 2003)
I am using Acronis True Image for Windows Server and I have a good backup of
my Drives...
The original Drive Arrays (they were too small so we had to upgrade to
larger drives) have all been removed to make room for the new, larger hard
disk arrays and the HP SmartController has been reconfigured to support the
new RAID 5 configuration with 3 hard drives. So I cannot go back to the
original setup.
Acronis Tech support said I can restore the data partition by partition,
(one at a time) so I can resize the partition on the new drive which is what
we want to do. That process is running now and it will take 12 hours to
complete.
But they also said that I should not write the MBR using their software.
They said I should boot to the recovery console and run some commands. They
said:
"Please boot up from the Windows Bootable CD, then go to the Recovery
Console (the first Repair option you come to).
From the command prompt please type:
FIXMBR C:
FIXBOOT C:
COPY CDDrive:\I386\NTLDR C:\
COPY CDDrive:\I386\NTDETECT.COM C:\
BOOTCFG /rebuild
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The problem is that when you do this, Windows installation will ask you for
the administrators password before you every have a chance to enter the
commands. The administrators name was changed for security reasons so the
actual login name "Administrator" does not exist. Will I still be able to
get into the Recovery Console? If not, what should I do now?
Any help would be appreciated.
No Help and Support Center
Ok.
I know I'm in the wrong area, but it seems that "Microsoft Support" of any
kind has become rather amoebic and spread out over God Knows where, and I've
spent the last three hours just trying to find the right area to ask
We're running Win 2K3 R2. I've got two identical servers (IBM x3650) running
the 64 bit OS. On one of them, the "Help and Support Center" no longer runs,
from ANY application, nor via "F1", nor from the Start menu. I've checked the
"Data Execution Prevention" settings (which, by the way, won't let me change
the 64Bit executables) and I've checked the registry for application file
locations. I'm at a complete loss as to what happened.
What am I missing???????
Thanks.
different option for setting TS permission?
1. using ADUC on a server (domain controller or standalone server), go to
user object properties, under Terminal Service Profile, there is a option as
"Deny this user permissions to log on to any Terminal Server". The ADUC
version is 5.2.3790.1830
2. using ADUC on a XP (installed as admin package for XP) the option change
to "allow logon to terminal server". The version of ADUC is 5.2.3790.0.
Why they are different? Is there a way to make it the same, especially on
XP? a new adminpak?
I know the dial-in Tab on xp has to be enabled through some special process.
But just realized the difference with the TS option. Any idea why it's like
that (other than it's from adminpak) and possible fixt?
Is there a way to connect to an ldap server from client services for
unix user name mapping on server 2000. I read that 2003 supports this
but was wondering if anyone has found a workaround. Tag: Strong Authentication for Terminal Services Tag: 112389
Problem with SNMP
Hello,
We are trying to monitor whether or not processes are running on the
windows 2003 servers that we have. I currently have an odd problem.
When I do an snmpwalk (from a unix server running nagios) of the
hrSWRunName OID, it is supposed to show me ALL of the running
processes but it only shows about 12-15 of them and just like murphy's
law, it doesnt show the processes that I need to monitor!
Any suggestions?
I'm looking for 2 factor authentication options to layer on to my Terminal Services implementation. Anyone have any experience or opinions?
There are some nice tokenless options in this space. check out https://www.phonefactor.com/terminalservices. It may be just what you're looking for, though we haven't actually implemented it ourselves yet. Anyone else have experience with them?
