    - Running out of LAN IP addresses I currently manage a school that is growing and will run out of internal IP addresses. We currently use 192.168.1.x and 255.255.255.0 for the network.     - Map Drive Login Script Issue Hi Ok here is the situation.... I have a .vbs login script in the user portion of group policy object that maps drives to the user account depending on the groups they are in. There's no actual problem with the script. It does what it should do however on 2 machines it simply will not map the drives. THe script is written to delete any mapped drive the user may have before mapping the drives set out by the script. On these two machines, the deletion takes place but the mapping does not. Now here is the odd part. If I run the script directly on the machine it works fine. If I log in to another machine with the same user it works fine so the problem seems to be specifically with these two computers. Does anyone have an idea of what could be causing this?     - Securing service accounts? Hi, I am in an area that has a lot of service accounts such as Blackberry, and a lot of multi function printers that are setup with a AD username and password so that users scan documents and they appear in one of their mapped shares.. How can I secure these accounts as much as possible... I have seen various options such as stopping logging on etc, but does doing this stop these accounts from doing their job... For example, the log on locally option looks like a good bet, by denying logon locally for all the service accounts (Putting them in a group), would this prevent these accounts from accessing shares like the MFP's need to etc..     - Windows server 2003 pop-3 service hi all, we are using windows server 2003 domain. currently we don't have any mailing server e.g exchage . we are using windows 2003 pop3 service as a mail service in our domain for internal mails. we access only one address book through ldap protocol and map into in outlook client. when i used this address book in my out look client i m not able to change any thing becoz all entries are in disable mode second i want to create groups like in exchange (not like pdl on outlook client site) on windows server pop 3 service and want to used those as departmentwise. and please tell me from which location outlook fetch ladap address book. so i can made the changes as i want at the perticular object location in active directory.     - Netlogon Error 5782 Hi, I have 2 windows 2003 domain controllers. Each pointing to itself first and then the other DC.     - R2 File Server Resource Manager Reporting I have just setup FSRM on an existing clustered file server (2003 SP2/ R2 Enterprise 2 node cluster). I am trying to run a File Screen Audit report, but I am not getting the results I was expecting. I am only getting files in my reports that have been created since the file screening was setup. None of the hundreds of mp3's are showing up that were housed on this server before installing FSRM. But if I copy a new one out, it shows on the report. So I have a blank report, except for the new mp3 i put out there. Is this by design? Shouldnt I see all of the extensions I am looking for regardless of history?     - Server 2008 Remote Desktop becomes disconneted I have a new Server 2008. I am using Remote Desktop to setup and configure this new server. But, about every 2 hours the Remote Desktop disconnects. Then I can not connect again to the server without actually walking to the physicial server, logging in and then logout. Then I can login again using the Remote Desktop (at least for a couple more hours). How do I keep this server alive? Also, each morning I have to physically login to the server at the server, then I can use Remote Desktop. Also, I have the same problem using Terminal Services on the Server.     - installing drivers for WinXP x86 on Win2008x64 print server cluste We are in the process of trying to migrate our existing network printers over to a new, purpose-built Windows 2008 x64 cluster. We've got the two new cluster nodes in a cluster, and have installed the print server service without errors. We can add drivers for the printer(s) on the cluster node, and print test pages from there. Fine so far. Our network clients are all x86 Windows XP. We want to install the necessary drivers on the clustered print server so that they are downloaded automatically, just as with our current Windows 2003 print server. I have been trying all day, searching online documentation, and searching the web, and I cannot find out how to do this. I try opening the printer properties on the cluster, selecting "sharing," then "additional drivers." If I pick x86, it prompts me for a driver location, but I don't know where to find x86 drivers. I tried pointing it to XP drivers from I donwloaded from the printer manufacturers, but I get messages that they're invalid drivers. Do I need a Windows 2008 x86 installation DVD? If so, will those drivers work with Windows XP clients? I'll admit I'm really confused on this, and there's probably an answer staring me right in the face, and I'm just not seeing it.     - Domain Rename with Exchange 2007 I've to change a Domain Name, but I found that I can't do that if I have Exchange 2007 installed.     - Firewire External Drives That Work With Server 2003? We had an older Seagate Firewire (400) that worked very well with Backup Exec 12 using the disk folder option for backup media. We outgrew the drive and obtained a LaCie but it does not support Windows 2003. I've been to the major drive companies and see all sorts of external drives for Firewire 400 but none support Server 2003. anyone know of any drives that will work with Server 2003?     - Monitoring Software Was looking for some suggestions on monitoring software. Have a few requirements i havent had any luck finding. Obviously i'd like all the basic stuff, disk space, service, and basic health but there are a few other things i'd like to try and do. 1) Agentless monitoring - i know the majority of info can be pulled remotely with WMI and other techonologies so i dont see the need to toss more crap on my servers. This one isnt a must, but if i can find it, great. 2) custom SQL Queries - would like to be able to use SQL Count queries to help monitor some of our apps 3) custom WMI queries to make sure the results are within set bounds 4) Process monitoring - this is kind of common from what i've seen, but i thought i would add it. just want to make sure a process is running. 5) perfmon - again, kind of common but not all have it.     - Exclude My Music from Folder Redirecting (Synchronizing) I have been trying to exclude My Music from synchronizing. I read a web article which asks to create a custom ADM. And I have created a custom adm which is below. MyMusic.adm However when I add this adm to > User Configuration > Administrator Templates It shows "No My Music" How ever it doesnt show me the key (option) where in I can set the key. It is empty.     - logon error after restoration Dear folks... We have dell server on which win 2k3 enterprise edition OS is installed. Since due to some problem OS crashed & again we have installed OS. After proper installation of OS, I hav restored complete backup of OS with SYStem state.[backup taken through NTbackup ] whole data restored successfully & after that I have restarted server normally & logon screen comes & when I give the administrator's password it authenticate the password successfully & showing "Loading personal setting" windows. but After some time it again shows the ctrl+alt+delete windows & again I do the same login procedure it try to load user profile but again come on the same ctrl+alt+delete windows.     - User My document folder issue Each user has a home directory on the server for My Documents. Their My Documents link points to the home directory folder. We use syncronization for laptop users. Today, the principal , of all people could not access her My Documents folder. Upon diagnosing I noticed that the My Document link in her start menu was now showing that the MY Document folder lives on the local machine, which is why she was not seeing the network folder. Any ideas on what could cause this? What is the best approach to resolve, since XP would not let me change the path for the My Document folder?     - Win 2008 PKI template issues We have just setup a Windows 2008 PKI Infrastructure in our Windows 2003 based domain. We need to issue certificates to Windows 2003 servers and Windows XP clients. We are getting "The integrity of this certificate cannot be guaranteed. The certificate may be corrupted or may have been altered." On the Details tab of the certificate, we see version is "V3", Public key is "RSA (1024 Bits)", Thumprint algorithm is "sha1".     - WSUS Question Hello, We are trying to install and configure WSUS on a server that has SQL Server on it. We do not want to use the SQL server instance so we wanted to install MSDE for the WSUS. We are receiving an error when we try to install MSDE: A strong SA password is required for security reasons. Please use SAPWD switch to supply the same.     - dcpromo-tells me invalid ip I have TCP\IP configured on a standalone server. I confirmed my IP address was correct IP 10.1.1.1 subnet 255.255.255.0 gateway 10.1.1.1 dns server (itself) no dns configured yet but plan on doing it during the dcpromo but when I go to do a dcpromo it tells me IP is not set up correctly.     - Performance counter not working in Perfmon I have a simple custom performance counter that is created each time my service starts. The category is created at install time. I can connect to the service's process and see my counter incrementing correctly. Perform shows this value as 0 regardless, however this was working a few reinstalls ago. It did stop working after I had to reboot my computer to fix a "this installation has been marked as deleted (or similar)" error message. I am sure I am checking the correct counter as when this in uninstalled the counter category is removed. I can see other non custom counters correctly in perfmon I am running WIN2K3 SP2.     - can access IPs but not by hostname We have a W2K standard server used as web server that can access external sites / hosts by IP address, but not by hostname. nslookup shows that DNS is working fine and it can resolve hostnames to ip fine. But, when trying to use IE, or ASP mail directed to a hosted mail server on the same network (mail.domain.com) it will fail and gives an "Unknown host mail.domain.com" error. Using any browser by hostname fails with server can't be found. Use http:// ip address and it works fine. Incoming traffic works fine, but there are some sites on the server are using ColdFusion's cfhttp to access remote data, as well as posting credit card data through custom tags to processors using hostnames and not ip addresses.     - Modem software on Window 2003 Server I have a faxmodem attached a server running Windows 2003 Server. I use the server as a terminal server and to receive faxes. I send faxes using an email fax service. The faxes received are forwarded to a folder on my file server. I use the Microsoft fax program thatâ??s part of the OS. My problem is that the faxes are missing a line or two per page. I called the maker of my faxmodem and they said I needed to make some flow control setting changes; however the Microsoft program doesnâ??t allow you to make flow control changes. Is there a simple program that works on Windows 2003 server I can use which would allow me to make these changes and do everything I had done previously such as forward the faxes to my file server. Also, a related question... How can you see how big a single partition assigned to a RAID5 array is? How can I see what size to allocate on the new drive to match othe existing drives in the array?     - Offline folders in peer-to-peer environment Background: Friends have small shop with a W2000 server. They (9 users) log onto server and from there the primary application is to use QuickBooks in a workgroup mode. Exchange NOT on their server. They fetch their email from their internet webhost ( not ISP - just outfit that hosts their website and email - I'll call the webhost company ABC ). Currently the email service at ABC delivers their email to their PC's and then deletes it from ABC's server, leaving the only copy of their mail on each PC in the DocsandSettings\Username\...AppData\Outlook folder. They COULD buy a new server/disks but they are really just casual users and no one qualified to be sys mgr, so looking at options to keep it simple - even if they buy new box. Question: Can they 'map a network drive', then setup the " Outlook folder" on each PC to be an Offline folder , pointing to a folder on that network drive - either the server or another peer ? Maybe a USB drive with a folder for each user ? For this example, assume 3 pcs: PC1 PC2 Server PC1 fetches email from ABC as usual - goes about his business, when he logs off XP ( Vista ?) , that Outlook folder syncs with the remote folder ( either on PC2 or Server) leaving a backup of that folder on the server/peer ? I realize that " the other PC" must be there for this to work. Reason I mention not just server as option is: server disk space is getting tight - uses 2 SCSI drives now and tape - no room in case for another drive... and also if can sync with portable pc/drive then can get backup offsite too.     - FTP site on an ADC Hi , I have a Windows Server 2003 R2 Enterprise box which is an ADC and runs SMS 2003 SP3 primary site, a FTP web site and ISA 2006 to protect the FTP as well provide Web Proxy services. My FTP site is running quite nicely though I've heard the above mentioned setup is not good and can cause lots of unexplained problems. I have set up the FTPROOT directory to one of the partitions and what I have done to authenticate FTP users is this 1. I Created an OU called FTP accounts on the ADC and then create normal user accounts . 2.I Create FTP folders with the name of the client as the folder name .the same folder name is used to create the user account in the OU FTP accounts. 3. Once the user accounts have been created, i then proceed to set permissions on the individual folders inside the FTP root. eg- Suppose client is Siemens. so the FTP user account would be siemens. The new folder inside the FTP root directoy would also be siemens and then I proceed to give Domain\siemens Read\Write\Modify permissions to the siemens folder. I also deny permission to delete the folder,change user permissions or take ownership. this done when the user ftp's into the FTP site through IE 6 and authenticates ,it takes him directly to the correct folder ,leading the user to think he is at the home folder. He cannot traverse up as only the required folder is being shown . My real issue is that when the user FTP's in from Mozilla,Opera ,Safari,Unix or even IE7 or IE8 ,it takes him to the FTPROOT directory!!, in my case E: . This shows him all the other folder names and lets him see al the other FTP folders and since our company has rival companies as clientswho think they are the only ones whom we do business with,it's a real business killer!!! Is this because I have allowed the user group EVERYONE to list folder contents at the FTP root directory( E:) . Is there any way to limit the view of the FTP clients to just their folder. When I removed the everyone -list folder contents from the root,then nobody was able to log in to the FTP site. Also is IIS Lockdown tool good for my FTP site? Please help guys!!!     - Disable NTFS Compression for Users Is there a method to disable users from compressing NTFS drives, folders, and/or files on a server? For example, if a user goes into properties for a network drive there is a check box option for "Compress drive to save disk space". If they check this option there are not denied access and the compression occurs. A couple users have already compressed their home folders. Luckily nobody has done this for the common shared folder yet. I played with this in the lab and it appears write access or higher allows a user to compress. This MS article says how compressing can affect performance so I find it odd it can't be easily disabled for users. I was hoping for a group policy method so it can be done centrally and quickly. This is the only possible solution I have found, 2 quotes from MS below. It would basically mean formatting the drive with a cluster size larger than 4 KB. I haven't tested this yet. I'm hoping there is a better way. "Because file compression is not supported on cluster sizes greater than 4 KB, the default NTFS cluster size for Windows Server 2003 never exceeds 4 KB." "The compression algorithms in NTFS support cluster sizes of up to 4 KB. When the cluster size is greater than 4 KB on an NTFS volume, none of the NTFS compression features are available." I know it is in the EV...I meant, is there a log file kept? like if is a
enviroment poweroutage, stop error, it always makes you answer those...do
they get writen to a log file somewhere ???
