VPN between 2 win 2008 servers
I have two win 2008 servers. I am trying to setup a VPN between them
to pass files securely. They are in seperate locations and both have
multiple network cards as shown below
Server 1
NIC 1 - Public IP (89.xxx.xxx.xxx)
NIC 2 - Internal IP (192.168.0.1)
Server 2
NIC 1 - Public IP (219.xxx.xxx.xxx)
NIC 2 - Internal IP (192.1681.1)
I want to setup the VPN using a preshared key not a secure certificate
between the two internal NICs.
I have tried running through the routing and remote access wizard but
cannot find a way to get it to work.
Can anyone point me in the direction of any online step by step guides
that will help me out here. I have looked but cannot find anything
covering the above example.
Thanks

Image Backup of RAID arrays
I'm going to be rebuilding a server in a couple of months. It is a Dell
PowerEdge 2850 connected to a PowerVault box. There are 2 RAID 1 arrays
in the PowerEdge and a RAID 10 in the PowerVault.
Id like to image the 3 arrays before wiping the server and rebuilding. I
currently have Backup Exec 9.1 Looking for a way to do this. Low cost
would be a good thing...

We need to stress our server, monitor activity, and get a report ..
Hello,
We want to test a new database application on our LAN using a Win2003
server.
The idea is to
simulate normal use, and then
heavier-than-normal use and (if possible)
to get a report of what happened during the
to see if the machine can manage the load increase.
Are there any tools on a Win 2003 server to get such an report?
Are there any freeware tools, which allow such monitoring?
Thanks in advance

Migrate Creation Date only attribute
I have a problem. I migrated a large number of files and did not set the
preserve timestamp setting in the utility I used and now, after a couple of
weeks in production, we have an application problem.
Is there a CLI utility where I can copy just the creation date from a source
file to a destination file without changing any other atribute, or the data
it self? We still have the source data intact.
I know I can use Robocopy to copy the timestamp, but we want to preseve the
new destination 'modify date', and only change the creation date.

File copy help
Hi, I need some suggestions for solving a file copy problem. I essentially
need to watch multiple directories for new files, and copy any new files to a
common destination. The directories I need to watch are in the same top
level folder, but are in different sub folders. Any 3rdparty tools or
scripting ideas that might make this easy and scalable (the number of source
directories will continue to grow). Thanks. Tag: Shadow Copies for Shared Folders and VSS Hardware Provider Tag: 119806
Server 2008: Downgrading to SMB1
Hi Everybody,
I have a set of PDC and WTS running on Server 2008 (Enterprise x64). I have
problems accessing files that seem to be SMB related. Server 2008 uses SMB2.
Somebody told me that I could activate SMB1 on those servers.
I have created a 32Bit DWORD called SMB1 in
HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrenControlSet\LanmanServer\Parameters and set the value to 1.
(on both servers)
This did not have any effect, netmon still reports SMB2.
Can anybody help?

missing renamed network attached printer on print server
On a Windows Server 2003 print server i renamed a printer and it's share
name. After i renamed the printer the name did not change and there was an
error message that said "Printer not found on server, unable to connectâ?? and
there was no sign of the new printer name. On a XP machine i went to add a
printer wizard and found the printer with the new name in the list of
printers on our print server and was able to add it and print to it. What is
really strange is that the new printer name or associated port does not show
up in printer and faxes on our print server. I was able to delete the old
printer with the error message on the print server and am still able to print
to the printer with the new name on the XP machine. I am concerned because I
am not able to get the properties of the printer with the new name. How can
I get this printer to show up in add printers and faxes on the print server?

Separator Pages
Thank you for your response. The users are part of a domain. I tried the
following, but it did not resolve the issue. I deleted the printers from the
computer. I made the user an administrator. I then reinstalled the
printers. I tested the separator page, but it still displayed
"Administrator", not the user's name.
Do you know how I can fix this issue?
Are the user part of a domain?
If they entered the credentials for Administrator when making the printer
connections, the jobs hit the server with the same security ID

Windows 2008 - is the 32 bit OS a fully supported and endorsed product or should I avoid it ?
Hi,
I have just been told that Windows 2008 is really only available as a 64bit
product and not to use the 32bit version. Apparently MS have only produced
the 32bit version for transition reasons and don't recommend using this
version. I know this was the case with Exchange 2007, but am suprised to
hear this about Windows Server 2008?
Is this a case of mis-information and is the 32bit version just as
solid/endorsed/supported as the 64bit version or should I avoid the 32bit
version at all costs?
Thanks for any input in advance.
Zaz
(PS. I know 64bit is the better product and I should use it over the 32bit
if possible, but sometimes compatibility comes first (usually always
actually) and I imagine that the 32bit OS is going to be more "backward
compatible" than the 64bit version when it comes to printer drivers etc... Tag: Shadow Copies for Shared Folders and VSS Hardware Provider Tag: 119794

Is there any advantage to Using Wins?
I have win2003 server with about 15 XP clients. We use dhcp from a
router. Is there any advantage to setting up wins on the server. It is
my understanding that it is used for netbios clients. We dont install
netbios on any of the computers. Would it be a waste of time to set up
the wins on the server. Or does it do more than that. Would it help
our network function better. If you ask "if it aint broke dont fix
it" . Well the network does act up sometimes. Im wondering if this
might help a little.

Why doesn't the Windows Component installer want all files to be from SP2?
Gurus,
If I install Windows components on my Windows Server 2003 SP2 computer, I
first get prompted for the location of the Windows Server 2003 SP2 CD-ROM
and I point the installer to the C:\Windows\ServicePackFiles directory.
Then I et prompted for the location of the original Windows Server 2003
CD-ROM, which means I have to point it to the CD-ROM drive, which only
contains the Windows Server 2003 CD-ROM (with SP1) media. Then the
installer is happy and finishes it's job.
My question is, why does the installer ask to pull files from the SP2 CD-ROM
directory only to later ask for files from the SP1 CD-ROM? Why wouldn't it
want all files to be from the SP2?

Roaming profiles - laptop users who travel to sites with slow link
Hi,
All our users -include laptop users - are configured with roaming profiles -
all stored on a file server in our large well connected head office. Many of
the laptop users travel to some of our smaller sites which have very slow
links e.g. 512k /128k ADSL.
I just wanted to confirm my understanding of roaming profiles - specifically
that when the user signs on in the small site that Windows XP will try to
pull down the profile from the central file server.
Can anyone confirm this ?

BEST PRACTICES: Simple File Server
I'm not even sure what group to put this in so I'll start in general and if
it belongs somewhere else, just say so!
So I have this IBM x3650 here that's running Win2K8 Datacenter Edition. I
need to make a very simple server out of it that has the following
requirments, in order of priority.
1) Share files via NFS to a small group of Unix (Fedora Core 5) clients on
a private subnet.
2) Be viable and accessible by Corporate IT as a Windows machine with
standard shares.
3) All file level transactions (read/modify/write) must be logged and fully
auditable.
4) Be able to be backed up via TSM or Backup Exec.
This server has two network cards in it, one going to the p rivate subnet
(192.168.1.X) and one going to the corporate subnet (10.0.0.X). The server
is not a member of a domain and it won't be; it's just a simple workgroup.
It is not necessary for the Corporate LAN to be able to access the private
and and thus it is not necessary for the private LAN to access the corporate
LAN.
I am no a Windows expert here, I am a Unix developer! So far I have
installed Windows Server 2008 Datacenter Edition and put it on the networks,
I can ping both subnets. Some best practices and a bit of hand holding
would be really helpful and greatly appreciated here! I need to have this
in production yesterday!
Thanks in advance!

DNS service causing DC to hang on reboot
*posting here and in the DNS forum*
DNS is causing my Domain Controller (Win2003R2) to hang on reboot. It
freezes on "Preparing Network Connections". To determine it was DNS, I
booted into Safe mode and disabled DHCP and DNS. The server booted normally
and I was able to log in. I then enabled DHCP and rebooted server and the
server booted normally. After I logged in, I then changed the DNS service to
manual and started the service and it started successfully and my forward and
reverse zones came up (active directory integrated) and all AD errors were
cleared on this particular server (I have a total of 4 DCs among 3 different
sites).
Problems started a couple of weeks ago, when after a reboot, DHCP and DNS
were not working. I had to manually start DHCP and although DNS was running,
the zones were gone. After I restarted DNS, the zones reappeared and all was
fine. The next week DHCP was fine, but again, the zones in DNS disappeared
until I restarted the service. Now this week, DNS won't even allow the
server to boot. Once DNS is started, replication appears to be working just
fine between my sites, and my workstations and servers are happy.
Any suggestions on fixing the startup issue when DNS is set to automatic?
Seeing as though this is a DC, I probably can't just uninstall and reinstall
DNS, can I? I will probably be running dcdiag to help confirm things are
okay between all the DCs, but any other suggestions would be helpful if you
have them.
I'm just not sure why the DNS service is freezing my server upon startup.
Thank you!

Windows Server 2008 Task Manager Problem
I don't know if I'm in the right group or not, as I cannot locate a specific
Server 2008 category.
Many times, when I attempt to bring up the task manager I am running into a
problem.
I can right click the task-bar and select task manager from the context menu
or hit CTRL-shift-ESC, or CTRL-alt-Del and select task manger, or start it
from the run line, but the result is always the same... task manger starts
minimized in the task notification area, and when I right click to restore or
close it, the context menu appears, but task manager never comes to the
foreground.
If I mouse over the task manager Icon on the task-bar, it shows a gauge that
is jumping up and down, and a tooltip shows CPU usage at different
percentages, however I cannot bring the task manager to the foreground to
work with it!
The context menu also is staying on the screen with "Always on Top" checked,
but I cannot get task manager to come up. Clicking on task managers context
menu does nothing and appears to be ignoring the clicks... the context menu
does not go away.
Is anyone else having this problem? I gargled it, but nothing related comes
up.
Any assistance would be appreciated. Tag: Shadow Copies for Shared Folders and VSS Hardware Provider Tag: 119733

searched the support site and found the error but did not locate how I can
remedy this situation. I am running Windows Server 2000, service pack 4 with
all the latest Microsoft updates. This is a domain controller (one of three,
two of the domain controllers are windows 2000 and one is 2003).
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Robocopy
Where is the home of current Robocopy information? The sync software we
use doesn't work on 2008. I'm awaiting an install of Commvault which
will include the replication so in the short term Robocopy seems to work
well.
Is there somewhere where Robocopy and all its versions, faqs, etc lives.
It appears to be built into the 2008x64 OS I have installed and I've
seen mention of also built into Vista.
It appears to be a later build which includes the dcopy:t timestamps
funtionality although this is not listed in the output of /? - doesn't
seem to be much info about. Tag: Shadow Copies for Shared Folders and VSS Hardware Provider Tag: 119712
unable to rdp into server after windows update
Hi all. I am unable to rdp into my server after doing manual windows update.
Upon windows update completion i would manually restart the server.
Previously if i just click on the restart button from the windows update
dialog box i would have this problem. All my other servers do not face this
problem except this particular server. All my servers are of win2003 standard
with sp2 and have the latest patches. Is there any setting i can do to
prevent this issue? Thks in advance. Tag: Shadow Copies for Shared Folders and VSS Hardware Provider Tag: 119701

Robocopy /MIR question
I am using Robocopy GUI 3.1.2.0 with Windows Scheduler to to copy/sync a
folder from a client PC to a shared folder on a Microsoft Windows Home
Server. The scheduler runs Robocopy every hour.
I want to use the /MIR Switch to copy everything from the Client PC folder
to the WHS shared folder and when a file changes or is deleted in the Client
folder the change will be copied to the WHS shared folder or the file I ill
be deleted in the WHS folder.
People on other forums have told me that the /MIR switch purges/deletes the
entire destination (WHS) folder when a source file change occurs then
Robocopy copies the entire source folder to the destination folder again.
Is this correct?
I assumed that when the /MIR switch was used the changed files in the source
folder would be copied again to the destination folder or they would be
deleted in the destination folder when the source folder file was deleted. I
didn't think the entire destination folder would be delete and then re-copied
from the source.
Which scenario is correct?
Thanks for your help!

w2k3/IIS6 query on FTP logins?
Learning here how to use windows Explorer to ftp data to our server, instead
of using our FTP software. Seems pretty easy to do, but I've a question.
w2k3 is supposed to allow you to both isolate or not, the user from all the
folders in the vhosts folder, as I understand it. In setting up a simple FTP,
I just used the Wizard and it ran fine...but I did note that when I tried to
use same, I was asked for the id/pw and I had them for one of the sites on
the server....but that made me wonder.
When I'm using RDC on the server and settting up a new FTP service there,
for a client whom I want to be isolated, I did NOT see anyway to create id/pw
for them.
Is there a way using IIS mgr in the console to do that? Did I miss it?

Burning IMG file to DVD
I downloaded Windows Server 2003 R2 Enterprise Edition with SP2 (Trial
edition) Microsoft's download page says to download and burn the ISO to CD or
DVD but the download is a IMG extention, not ISO.
I have tried to burn the IMG to DVD but all it does is move the file to the
DVD and not extract it like a ZIP or ISO would. I am using Sonic DigitalMedia
but can't seem to figure how to extract it. I have looked all over google for
an answer and everyone seems to have this problem. I have changed the
extention to ISO but that didn't do anything.

Scheduled Task .bat file 0x1 Error
I was having trouble getting a scheduled task to run on Windows Server 2008
that was calling a .bat file to run. Specifically, I was getting a 0x1 error
whenever the scheduled task ran. The solution was to type in the path to the
.bat file in the Start In(optional): in the edit action window. You get
there by pressing the Edit button under the Actions tab. Here is an example
path you'd type in if your .bat file is located under the temp folder at the
root of drive c:
c:\temp\bat
I wanted to report this solution because it took me several days to discover
this solution and I wanted to save someone else the trouble. Tag: Shadow Copies for Shared Folders and VSS Hardware Provider Tag: 119678

Now I want to modify it so that the videos, pictures and music go to
different drives and folders than the rest. I would like to have the same
structure on those folders though. Where U:\Users\%username%\ would hold the
documents and others, I would like it to automatically put Videos in
I:\Videos\%username%\videos, and the others in the same structure. This
would all be unnoticable to the user since DFS would take care of the rest.

backup millions of file?
Hi,
I need to backup a directory and alot of subdirectories and tons of file in
that directories. The directories hold mailboxes and mail items.
Neither Symantec backup Exec nor Acronis True image can handle this
operation. I need to backýp these directories as fast as possible. So anyone

Partition Magic 8 for Windows Server on Mirrored Volume!!!
Hi! All,
I have Windows Server 2003 R2 installed on a 300 gb HDD which has been
mirrored.
The server has 2 partitions C Drive is 50gb and D drive is 250 gb. Now I am
running out of disk space on theC drive and would like to use the partition
magic to shrink D Drive and extend the C Drive.
I would like to know if this is possible using partition magic.
I hope it will not cause any problems to the RAID?
Appreciate any help and advice.
Thank you

problems with Outllook- lose formatting after a few replies to & f
I have a signature picker and background on my Outlook emails for all
send/receive and forward/replies etc. Recently my son installed IE7- which at
the same time seems to have created problems with my email formatting. when I
am chatting to another email addressees, after a few replies back and forth-
my email loses it's background and reverts to plain text. My friends do not
have plain text as their setting- I am sending it as HTML with background but
it arrives to them as HTML with NO background and wehren they reply- I
receive it as plain text with no background. All my setting (HTML &
background) stay for a few replies back and forth- then they go. I have
uninstalled IE& (I didn't like it anyway) and now have IE6 again. I have
repaired Outlook, but this has not fixed the problem. I have also been
getting error and end program msgs whenever I close Outlook.

Windows 2008 Server w/ Hyper-V Freezes up daily
I have a Windows 2008 Server Ent. 64bit w/ Hyper-V and all latest updates.
Currently we are only running 1 Guest OS.
Server Specs:
Dell PowerEdge 2950
16GB of Memory
RAID 5 w/ 6 x 146GB drives at 15RPM (SAS)
4 Broadcom NICS teamed to make 1 virtual
Created one Virtual Network in Hyper-V for my Guest that points to 1
physical NIC out of the 4 that I teamed.
Team is configured in a Smart Load balancing configuration w/ failover.
60GB OS Partition for Windows 2008 and the remainder space is for Guest
machines.
Host freezes up about once a day and I need to physically shut it down to
make it functional again. Event logs don't help much, but then again I'm not
to familiar with Windows 2008. I will be checking with hardware vendor and
running a hardware diagnostic, but would like some direction as to what could
be causing the issue.
thanks. Tag: Shadow Copies for Shared Folders and VSS Hardware Provider Tag: 119650

Modify CIW logon screen
I have a completely private network where we perform PXE based installation.
After thousands of times of entering usernames and passwords to get to the
OS choices, fingers become numb.
I know that it is not best practice to remove the logon screens, but how do
I do this? is it possible?
I have read through the material at
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc739932.aspx around designing
custom RIS experiences, but it recommends not to remove the logon screen,
presumably for security purposes which, again, are not a concern here.
Any help is appreciated.
