Recommendations for taking an image of a server
Hi there,
Just wondering if anyone could recommend any software to take images
of a couple of servers before i take them to the out of the office. I
have 4 servers that i could do with imaging onto a USB hard drive and
keep for safe keeping.
I do not need to do anything fancy like restore the image over a
network. Just need to be able to restore the image from a portable
hard disk.
Thanks in advance,
Cheers

Offline File Weirdness
I've got a user having problems with offline files. His user profile is setup
on one of our Windows 2003 SBS boxes, and his laptop is setup to use it
offline when he's away from the office. Two files don't seem to get carried
over correctly we he sync's at the end of the day, Outlook.NK2 and
rasphone.pbk. There will be no errors in the sync, and the offline files
folder will show these two files being present. Sure enough though, when he
gets home the shortcut to his vpn connection does nothing and Outlook has no
autocomplete. Outlook will then create a new autocomplete, which will inturn
over write the one stored on the server when he comes back to the office the
next day. Also, the rasphone.pbk just disappears and he vpn connection must
be recreated. Very frustrating. Any ideas guys and gals?

New Server in Company
Hello,
I am ordering my first new server. I need to get Server 03 due to the
application we are planning on running.
this is my first server config.
Due to the nature of the application, I had to order 8 hard drives.
drive 0,1 = raid 1
drive 2, 3 = raid 1
drive 4,5 = raid 1
drive 6,7 = raid 1
Ihave never created a RAID config before. I have a raid card ordered with
the server.
when and how is the best time to create the raid array and the partitions on
the drives?
when I connect all 8 drives, will the system ask me if i want to create a

VSS snaps filling my drive
Hi,
Just got a warning from my monitoring software that my 400GB database drive
with around 100GB of Exchange information store is 75% full. I've seen this
before,
so went looking at the System Volume Information folder (after changing
permissions to allow me access to it) to discover that it had accumulated
200GB worth of snapshots over the past 2 months. Every day when Veritas BE
9.1 (yes, we're upgrading this year) kicks in, I get the following message
in my app log:
Event Type: Information
Event Source: MSExchangeIS
Event Category: Exchange VSS Writer
Event ID: 9604
Date: 5/1/2008
Time: 4:30:37 PM
User: N/A
Computer: PAGE
Description:
Exchange VSS Snapshot metadata document has been collected.
This is immediately followed by the Event ID 210 indicating that a full
backup of the Exchange DB has started. Backups appear to be ok.
Each of the files in the Sysvol folder is created at the exact time the
backup starts.
The only article I see on the Symantec/Veritas site talks about seeing these
files pile up if a Shadow Copy Component backup is cancelled
(http://seer.support.veritas.com/docs/269989.htm). Mine do not appear to be
cancelled, as the VSS components are being successfully backed up according
to the backup log. Anyway, the Veritas solution in the article is to stop
the Volume Shadow Copy Service on the server.
Questions:
1. If I disable the volume shadow copy service, what am I losing?
2. Can I safely disable the old files in the System Volume Information
folder?
3. Any other recommendations?
Thanks in advance,
Phil

[WIN 2k3] IPSEC/Net/device problems
I was doing some hardware changes with my HP Blade 460c.
After that I couldn't get to internet. I noticed that IPSEC and Taskmanager

I can't get the to see my hard disks from disk management either. It' says
that access denied. Could this be somehow related to the Windows 2000 domain
that the 2003 computer is part of?
Any ideas are welcome.

we have checked out DNS - see the screenshot.

Also, already gone to domain in DNS console and right click and create a new

1 backup Device or multiple
Hey all,
I need some *polite* argument points please :)
I work at a consulting company who manages networks for their
clients. I'm reletively new here but something strikes me as unusual:
In many cases, where there are multiple servers, they also use
multiple backup devices.
For example:
FS1 has a backup device
AS1 has a backup device
TS1 has a backup device
The argument they give is that it is more than a single point of
failure and if one backup failes or they forget to put in a tape, then
chances are that the other ones will pass. Basically they are not
relying on 1 tape drive to do it all (lets say use a 400/800 instead
of 3 x 200/400 lto drives).
To me this does not make sense from a financial point of view and a
managment point of view.
I want to bring this to the table but need solid arguments....any
ideas?

2) I want to track the users login & logout time.(or computer

Do I need a third party program, or do I have to use some management

Windows XP Registry Repair
The Windows registry on your PC is a set of files which store all the
essential settings for hardware, the operating system, the control
panel, application software, user preferences and user profiles, and
file associations (which programs run which types of files).
How is Windows XP registry repair done, and why does the Windows
registry ever need to be repaired anyway? At the bottom of this
article, there is a link to a resource page which gives access to
software tools you can use to repair the registry.
Repairing or cleaning the registry can also be done manually, using
the program regedit.exe (Registry Editor), which comes with Windows
XP, or with reg.exe from the command line. Manual editing is not
recommended though, even if you do a backup, because the registry
files are absolutely essential for the Windows operating system to
run, and it is all too easy to damage them by careless editing.
Microsoft Support itself says this - 'Although you can use Registry
Editor to inspect and modify the registry, doing so is not
recommended, as making incorrect changes can damage your system.'...

Windows 2003 R2 (primary corporate AD/DC/GC/KCC/DNS/NIS server) taking
Our primary Windows 2003 R2 Server takes an extremely long time to .
The server will first hang quite a while at the "preparing network

Application and System Event Logs, and additionally I have to manually
start the Server for NIS service.
One of the first errors I see in the Event Log is this:

ISA Svr and Terminal Server
I am looking for some best practices advice please.
We currently have to replace our ISA Svr box with new hardware. At the

nothing. However the organisation is about to install a TS server to
service about 60+ remote users. Originally we were going to place a
second box behind the ISA server to do this but wondered if the TS
workload could go on the ISA box to save on hardware?
So the question is: would it be ok to combine TS and ISA on the same box
or should we stick to the original plan of TS behind ISA? What do other
people do here?

Strange performance on Windows 2003 EE SP2
Hi all,
I met a strange performance issue on Windows 2003 Enterprise X64
Edition with SP2 / Intel Xeon 3G(4chips * 4cores/chip) .
On the server, there is a j2ee containner with some applications. A
simple jsp code to query/insert/update some tables after the client
clicked the submit. The clients complained that this update is slowly. I
did a test on both the server and another pc. The result is very strange:
From the server, the code executed costing 400ms, while 5+ seconds
from PCs! The execute time is output in the jsp code, such like:
System.out.println( new Date().getTime() );
..... do updates ...
System.out.println( new Date().getTime() );
I had done the test on a Windows 2003 EE 32Bit with SP2, the same result.
The SNP is disiabled on both boxes.
Any ideas?

mention that my Vista SP1 is a virtual machine on the same Windows 2008

that's causing my problem. I should also mention I tried to connect to

Recovery Console question
Folks:
I am making some changes to our SBS 2003 Server this weekend and some
questions have arisen that need fast answers... We are working on a server
which is a domain controller. (SBS 2003)
I am using Acronis True Image for Windows Server and I have a good backup of
my Drives...
The original Drive Arrays (they were too small so we had to upgrade to
larger drives) have all been removed to make room for the new, larger hard
disk arrays and the HP SmartController has been reconfigured to support the
new RAID 5 configuration with 3 hard drives. So I cannot go back to the
original setup.
Acronis Tech support said I can restore the data partition by partition,
(one at a time) so I can resize the partition on the new drive which is what
we want to do. That process is running now and it will take 12 hours to
complete.
But they also said that I should not write the MBR using their software.
They said I should boot to the recovery console and run some commands. They
said:
"Please boot up from the Windows Bootable CD, then go to the Recovery
Console (the first Repair option you come to).
From the command prompt please type:
FIXMBR C:
FIXBOOT C:
COPY CDDrive:\I386\NTLDR C:\
COPY CDDrive:\I386\NTDETECT.COM C:\
BOOTCFG /rebuild
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The problem is that when you do this, Windows installation will ask you for
the administrators password before you every have a chance to enter the
commands. The administrators name was changed for security reasons so the
actual login name "Administrator" does not exist. Will I still be able to
get into the Recovery Console? If not, what should I do now?
Any help would be appreciated.
Pesky Profile Problem
Due to some weird things occuring with a user's account, I decided to delete
the profile. Of course, that means deleting it from the profile storage
location on the server, deleting the profile on the XP PC in profiles and
removing the profile path in the user's account.
At this point, no trace of a previous profile should exist. Yet, when the
user logs in, desktop icons from the previous profile re-appear and a
shortcut (that points to a mapped server drive) still has a .dll error.
Repeating this process, I had the user login to a computer never used by him
previously. I repeated the deletion steps. He logs in. Same problem. It has
to be pulling this down from some location. But I can't think of where that
might be coming from AND the status of his profile is local -- not roaming.
Any thoughts would be helpful.
Within this policy i have created the RULE "DNS".
Within this rule i have a DNS filter.
Filter is setup as follows:
source = any ipaddress
destination = any ip address
protocol = tcp
from = any
to = 53
saved/applyed
I now assigned the policy and try
telnet <dns ip> 53
It fails to connect to the remote DNS server.
If i unasigned the policy it works again.
Why does my policy fail to allow DNS to pass through ?
(Have used gpudate to flush just incase but ASSIGN then UNASSIGN clearly
shows the 2 states failing / working).
Thanks for any advice.
Windows Home Server vs Windows Server Enterprise
I really like what Windows Home Server has to offer:
*Automated daily backups of multiple computers
*Remote access
*Streaming music
*The way storage can be expanded including redundancy
Now I have a Windows Server Enterprise license sitting around doing
nothing. So rather then shelling out money for Windows Home Server I
am wondering if Windows SErver Enterprise can do all of the above as
well. Any input is appreciated.
2 windows 2003 DC hang problem
Hello.
I´ve two windows 2003 std DC. This two DC are DNS servers of the lan.
One of the servers has Exchange 2003.
At 5 days ago i´ve done an upgrade to 4 GB (maximum supported by windows
2003 std) to the server with Exchange 2003, and since that the server hangs,
and do not generate any error in event viewer. The system freeze.
All the client computers are Windows XP Professional, and are configured by
DHCP and know the 2 DNS.
When the server with Exchange 2003 goes down, i´ve problems with users
authentication (logon).
I think the other server should kepp users authentications and computers
working ok in the lan, but when users try to logon, the request fails !
I´ve checked the AD and DNS replication and no problems were found.
Why the other server does not respond to the client logon request?
The problem of "system freeze" can be related with the quantitiy of 4 Gb of
memory (i,ve already changed the DIMMS)?
I´ve done hardware diagnostic with HP smartstart CD, but no problems wer
found..
Please, someone, help.
Problems after installing SP2 in Win2k3 on a DC
after installing SP2 on a domain controller i have random computers on the
domain that are getting a "Logon Failure: Target account name is incorrect".
when i look in the event viewer i also see a kerberos error event id 4 and
the user cannot access any network resources. If we wait 5 minutes and then
restart the users computer everything works fine. The only thing i have done
to the server is installed SP2, what could be the problem? Tag: SQLsrv.exe takes the CPU 100% Tag: 112315
2003 Server and domain upgrade from Server 2000
Hello, I am planning to upgrade 2 DC's running 2000 standard to 2003 standard
r2. These servers are the PDC and BDC of the domain and the only servers
still running windows 2000 left in the domain. I've been running in mixed
mode for a couple of years and have upgraded all other servers except for the
2 DC's. I am also running an exchange 2003 server in this environment.
I have download the following document
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/325379
should these instructions be sufficient for what I want to accomplish?
Thanks,
NTBackup catalogs question
\All Users\application data\microsoft\windows\ntbackup\catalogs51 is the
repository of catalogs created by running NTBackup.
One of my clients has about 1.5 GB of catalogs in this folder dating from
2006, 2007, and 2008, through today, and all but the last five have no
corresponding backup data file (.bkf), because the files have been deleted.
Before I go and delete these, is there any reason why I should retain them?
Thanks in advance,
How to have one server in a domain with a different TimeZone then the
Greetings,
I need one 2003 server in my domain to run on a different timezone for
a specialized application that is time sensitive.
If I change the TZ, the DC changes it back. Even if I script to
change it, launch my app, disconnect the session, when I reconnect,
the TZ is changed back.
Any ideas? Tag: SQLsrv.exe takes the CPU 100% Tag: 112302
migrating from windows 2000 domain server to 2003 domain server
first off, configuration is
old windows 2000 domain server with 60 users in active directory
new windows 2003 domain server with the same 60 users active directory
both domain names are identical but not on the same network obviously
workstation are mixed windows 2000 and windows xp professional
i have installed windows 2003 server with all the latest SP's and updates
from microsoft and it works just fine if i JOIN a new/exsisting computer to
the domain.
i am having a problem when logging onto the new 2003 domain server with
workstations that were in the original 2000 domain.
i do not want to re-join these workstations to the new server as it greats a
new profile on each workstation and what a pain that would be
sometimes it might take 2 or 3 logins then it logs in
it seems as if the user login is (for lack of a better term) aware that this
is a different server (or vice versa)
i did some research and keep hitting on this SID situation
can anyone point me in the right direction so i can just use the exsisting
workstations and login to my new 2003 server.
thanks in advance
