    - boot problem Hi I have windows XP pro on my current system "c:/windows" SATA DRIVE 250GB I have installed another "D:/" SATA drive and copied windows 2003 server image. Bios have boot option "SATA Drive" only no option of disk selection along with other floppy/cd options. Problem is I cannot use dual boot. If I disbale first drive which have win xp then I can boot and run windows 2003 server if I enable first drive it goes to XP not giving me any option to boot through win 2003. I have tried to change boot.ini but no luck Can any one guide me how I can use as dual boot . What entries should I do to use boot ini. My Currrent boot.ini something like this. Enable both drives. Insert Windows XP bootable cd into your CD Rom drive and boot from it. At the first prompt select second option "Press "R" to enter recovery console" You'll be asked for Administrator's password, if any. Select you Window Xp installation by enter number 1 or 2, when prompted. You are now on command line. Type following command Code: bootcfg /addYou'll be asked "Which windows installation do you want to add?" Select the installation, in your case Window server 2003, to add in the list.     - Page File out of Space Hello, We inhereted a configuration with two hard drives configured on one controller with a capacity of 75Gb total. 32Gb is being used for the OS mirrored. The drive has been partitioned in order to seperate the page file from the OS with 45Gb. Currently the page file is running low with only 11Mb left in use. Is there a way to fix the problem of why would it use up all the paging? We recently loaded up the server with 4Gb of RAM from running only on 2Gb. Any help would be appreciated.     - Robocopy job errorl with "The handle is invalid" on a large (161GB) I'm trying to use robocopy to do a restartable-copy (/ZB) of a backup image from my server to a full-disk encrypted (truecrypt) hard drive. Whenever robocopy gets to 94.4% of the file though, it starts bombing out saying that "The handle is invalid." The whole message is... ----------------------------------------- 2008/07/07 14:25:20 ERROR 6 (0x00000006) Copying File \\server\share \file The handle is invalid. Waiting 30 seconds... Retrying... ----------------------------------------- It just sits there and keeps retrying. If I kill the job and try to restart it, it starts over from the begining, the /ZB switch isn't working. Is there some size limit for robocopy? I could have sworn that I've copied files larger than this with no problem, but this one just won't take.     - What is the Software Distribution Directory? We have a Windows 2003 Server DC and I was looking at the used space. While looking at the Windows directory I noticed a subdirectory called Software Distribution. A subdirectory of that was Download. There is a total of about 800MB of files in this directory.     - Windows Scheduled Task maxed out I am almost maxed on the number of scheduled tasks that I can create. I heard of a registry edit that over comes this limition when using a user account to run the task. does anyone know how to resolve this?     - Windows cannot obtain the domain controller name for your computer network "Windows cannot obtain the domain controller name for your computer network. (An unexpected network error occurred) Group Policy processing aborted." This is from the Application log of the server itself (SBS2003)! Repeats every 5 minutes. Have spent ages trying to find solution without success. I suspect it has to do with MS Virtual PC 2007. I need it to run tests on Windows 2000, XP and Vista without having to have any more hardware. Typically have 2 or 3 virtual PCs running at the same time. They also report Winlogon and Browser failures but browse network fine. Some are domain members others are on the same name workgroup. Server otherwise functions OK with occasional slowness in web browsing probably due to DNS issues when it forgets its own name.     - creating schtasks to run for a date range every month I am attempting to use schtasks to create some scheduled tasks to run on a monthly basis but am having trouble figuring out the right syntax to get the desired behavior. Basically, I want to run a batch file every day (during the desired date range) starting at a specific time. Some examples: I want a batch file to run every 23rd-30th of each month, starting at 1:00am. I want a batch file to run every 23rd-30th of each month, starting at 10:00am. I want a batch file to run every 15th-21st of each month, starting at 1:00am. I want a batch file to run every 15th-21st of each month, starting at 10:00am. The day-of-month range would be the same every month. There doesn't appear to be a way to specify more than one day, or a day range with the /d parameter. This peer will be discarded as a time source and NtpClient will attempt to discover a new peer with this DNS name. Error, ID 29: The time provider NtpClient is configured to acquire time from one or more time sources, however none of the sources are currently accessible. No attempt to contact a source will be made for 15 minutes. NtpClient has no source of accurate time. I have scrupulously followed the instructions in KB816042.     - Quickie on DHCP Split Scope and reservations Hi I am setting up 80/20 split DHCP I have a range 10.140.0.1 to 10.140.9.254 which I have setup on both servers Server 1 has exclusion of 10.140.8.1 to 10.140.9.254 (80% server) Server 2 has exclusion of 10.140.0.1 to 10.140.7.254 (20% server) My question is if I need a reservation for a clicnt with IP say 10.140.0.50 I would obviously set this up on Server 1 but what about server 2 as this address is excluded? Now we killed the process (or the program quit) for some reason, but the port xxxx is still open when we monitor it using netstat command and we can not restart our daemon because of the opening port.     - Upgrading Windows CA Authority Hi, I have a windows 2000 CA that I want to remove from the network. I want to replace this with a 2003 CA but the standard process poses some problems The MS suggested Upgrade/Migration process states 1. Upgrade the 2000 CA to 2003 before migration - the problem here for me is the 2000 DC is very old and I'm fairly confident it wouldn't be sufficient for W2003 2. The new CA should have the same name as the old CA - I already have all the required servers setup and running. Further I would prefer not to have a server named the same as the old one. My question is - considering my preferred network setup requires that I move to a new server with a different name I was thinking that I would follow the process http://support.microsoft.com/kb/889250 to remove the CA that is currently installed on the 2000 DC/CA, remove the 2000 DC/CA then install a brand new 2003 CA on a different server with a different name. Can anyone tell me if there are any implication when doing this. Similarly hostname is also not updated in WSUS What should we do to sort out the issue. Can we create any script or bat file & run file after the installation of OS on desktop.     - 2008 Backup - Device Error? Hello Technet, When running Windows Server Backup from the Server Manager (2008) - selecting VSS full or copy backup, it reaches around 3.8gb on C: then fails with an "I/O device error". We've tried saving to alternate disks and network locations, as well as running wbadmin, same error message. It appears to be failing during the System State backup. Server has been restarted, and checked for any more recent updates, but there is no change. I've found reference to this particular error in Vista where the solution was to go to System Protection and disable Shadow Copy on the drives, then re-enable - though I cannot see the System Protection area in 2008. Shadow Copies are not currently enabled on any drive in the server, and still no change in the error message. Is there another way to fix this problem?     - Win2k3 Standard File Server - Missing Data Hello all, I've got a Win2k3 Std SP2 file/member server in an SBS2k3 domain. This file server developed an issue where it would not connect itself to the domain. This was fixed easily with a repair reinstall, but an important issue remains: The file server uses 2 HDD which are mirrored. The HDD is partitioned into the normal system/boot partition, with a logical D drive where user data are staged. Following the OS repair/reinstall, data files for about a 6-month chunk of time simply no longer appeared on the data partition. Also lost was any kind of data file on the boot partition, such as app license files, for example. Nothing was done to attempt to restore the file server to a previous date checkpoint, or LNG, or anything of that nature. Simply the OS repair/reinstall. Of note is that VSS was not enabled for any of the partitions at this time, or previously. I have combed the drives for the MIA files with no joy. Also have run forensic data recovery on the partitions, with absolutely nothing showing up as deleted or similar for the chunk of time in question. Am at a bit of a loss right now as to how to proceed from here to find and restore the missing files. I tend to think they must be somewhere. Am I wrong?     - VPN data encryption type Hello, i get that error: The following error occurred in the Point to Point Protocol module on port: VPN5-127, UserName: ABC\ata. The remote computer does not support the required data encryption type. I've an ATA "analog telephone adaptor" which connects to a windows VPN 2003server and i get that nice error. i googled and i found that i MAY need to decrease the Encryption level from 128 to 40 , i'm not sure that this is the solution. because i've another windows 2003 VPN box which had that error in the past, but now working and i don't see some reason, i made identical configuration but i get same error i don't know what to do ,, any Help or redirection would be greatly apperciated Thank you A.     - Continue with existing session Hi, I have got a machine with no keyboard mouse and screen, so I have to control it with remote desktop. I have set it to auto-logon and creates as session automatically, which list's the sound card and uses it. When I connect via remote desktop it creates a new session which I do not want, I want to continue with the one that was create by auto- logon. I can change via task manager but I want it to join that specific one, is there a way to do this?     - Packet/Traffic Analysis Hello all, I'd like to monitor traffic flowing through my server 2003 server, and if possible be more specific i.e. something came in on Port 80 and was accessing www.domain.co.uk It's so I can see what traffic is more commonly seen, where it's going, etc and be able to display it in a nice graph, or chart, etc. also, would the same software be able to monitor an external NIC from a remote location to see what traffic is going through that as well as the server NIC? i.e. if I have a load balanced setup I'd like to see what is coming into the router as well as what is coming into each server.     - Windows Server 2003 Backup. We are running Windows Server 2003 on an HP Proliant ML350 G4. We are using a Quantum DLT8000 tape backup device. The problem we are having is that the backup never completes successfully. We are trying to back up around 52GB of data split across three hard disks. The Hardware Compression is switched on on the tape drive and our backup command has the /hc:on switch. The tape is a 40/80 GB tape. Service Pack 2 for Windows Server 2003. I have also added the /UP switch to the backup command.     - Excluding folders from My Document Redirection Hello, I have implemented a Test environment as our company is soon going to implement a policy for EXCLUDING My Music from folder redirection. (As users have a lot of music crap, we think it should remain locally on the machine and should not be stored on the server.) My Test Environment: 1 Windows 2003 BOX, Windows XP machine. Locally networked. Folder Redirection: Works fine. All the My Documents is redirected to \\TESTSERVER\UserData\Username\User Documents Roaming Profile: Roaming Profile is also implemented and user profiles are stored here: \\TESTSERVER\Profiles\Username On the internet I found dozens of articles talking about creating a ADM file for excluding My Music folder. These articles basically talk about creating an ADM which edits a registry entry of "ShellFolders" which edits the "My Music" location. So I created the ADM file which edits the ShellFolder and points it to %user profile%\My Music Here is how 2 seperate GPOS are applied: Please see this Picture: http://img56.imageshack.us/img56/245/picture1fw7.jpg As you can see in the Picture > 1. 1 GPO For Folder ReDirection > 2. Other GPO For My Excluding My Music However I still can see My Music in My Documents.     - GPO Vista Issue Hi, Apologies in advance from a "newbie" here if this is the wrong forum- seems the most appropriate on Google Newgroups. I manage our school network- nothing too exciting- 3 servers running Server 2003, mandatory profiles for the pupils and GPO objects to lock down the desktop managed through Active Directory. I am experimenting with Vista on our client machines at present and have some very weird issues. I've set up new GPO objects and the repository as explained in the Vista help guides for GPO, and edited them with the MMC plug in on a Vista machine. I have set up the Vista machine, joined it to the network, and then logged in as a pupil. The first time the pupil logs in, the desktop lockdown GPO objects all apply and the computer works as expected. However, if that pupil logs into the same machine again, the GPO is no longer applied.     - Networking issue Hi All, Please could someone help else .... I have a desperate problem with my machine at work when i try to syncronize with folders and files over the network. It can Literally take all night and even a few hours during the day to actually syncronize my PC to the Server connected at a different site. This for me is now approaching desperation and i am seriously considering quitting my job over it. I have a windows XP machine which connects to a Cisco 2950 switch which then connects to a Cisco 800 router - it passes a firewall into the cloud back through the firewall into a F&P server in a different town. I am unsure as to how many hops it passes but i suspect the problem may be that either or both of the switches are set to 10 mbps rather than 100. i am unsure of why the Cisco 800 router is there. Can anyone explain given the above information of what might be causing the syncronize to take as long as it is. Just to explain further - once i have syncronized all folders/files i only have to correct some text on ONE FILE but still get the sync problem. Any information on the above would be very useful.     - system disc replacement Hello. We have win 2000 standrad with 2 scsi(36gb 10k) discs and it is the primary domain controller in our domain(we have also win 2003 r2 as second dc). The first one-system with 2 partitions c:-system e:-user shares is failing. It is reporting some errors in dell open manage and when it is rebooted i have blue screen(this can be only resolved with recovery consloe -chkdsk /f). Also scsi utilities reports bad sectors. We have ordered new scsi disc which is 146gb 15k. We want to replace failing disc with new one and reitain dc role. I was thinking using acronis trueimage echo server.
