    - Windows 2003 DHCP Monitoring Previously our company had Novell DHCP services, and this provided us a live monitor of all DHCP Requests, Acknowledgements, Denies, etc. The Windows DHCP server seems to be lacking any kind of monitoring. It does have logs that I can check, but a monitoring tool would be preferred. I'm also looking for some way to search for a specific MAC Address within the system.     - Printing from a PC outside domain I have a situation where we have 3 production stations that all have their own domains and on each there is a Printer attached to one of the PC's and shared. I have 1 mobile station that has a single PC on it that is used by each of the 3 prodution stations as needed. It is a stand alone workstation not joined to any of the 3 domains but... They occasionally need to print from the mobile station which has no printer of it's own. Is it possible to print from a computer that is not part of a domain to a printer that is part of a domain? If it helps - all 3 of the production stations are clones of each other including IP schemes.     - GPO Software Deployment - DNS Alias We have recently replaced our main file server, migrating all files\software. Currently have 3 GPO's in place that were reponsible for deploying Office, Visio STD and Visio Pro. We should have used DFS, but that is water under the bridge right now. I had thought that a DNS Alias would allow the GPO's to contact the new file server, even though the server name was different...however this does not appear to be the case. I have put the entry in for disabling strict naming, and verified that the server is at least listening for the Alias as well. However the GPO's will not install. Keeps advising that the source location is not available. But when I go to the path via UNC, I can access. Is there anything I can do to resolve??     - Server Console login I have a Server 2003 server that is running Exchange 2003. Several times over the past few months it has locked the console login, so I can't get response when using CTRL+ALT+DEL. I can RDP in and all is running fine, but when I try CTRL+ALT+DEL at the console, it won't respond. When I use mstsc /console, it allows me to enter the login information, but then goes to the same blank screen as at the console itself. Since this is on a KVM, I setup USB mouse and keyboard, but CTRL+ALT+DEL still didn't work. The mouse moves around the screen fine. It is running Symantec for Exchange, Symantec (with the proper exceptions), and the Blackberry Enterprise software. If I reboot, it is fine. I've tried stopping and restarting Symantec and other services, but that doesn't seem to help. I checked the memory usage, and it looks like there is plenty free (2GB total/410MB available, 141112 Kernal/105316 paged/35796 nonpaged). The CPU usage is only 2%, and the network utilization is barely moving. I also noticed the Windows Firewall/ICS services was running, although the Firewall in Control Panel was off. I have turned this off, but it didn't help either. It seems like this person is having the same issue: http://www.computing.net/windows2003/wwwboard/forum/7285.html PLEASE HELP.     - Windows 2003 R2 x64 intermittently hangs New Windows 2003 R2 x64 server, Quad core proc, 12gigs ram, dual HBA fiber attached SAN storage. 3 SAN data volumes (2 - data volumes and 1 for user folders, mapped to look like one share). Server will suddenly seem to stop responding, sort of. Very slow browsing of the mapped drive. Server is still responding, and RDP to it, and open both data drives, but cannot open the use folder volume. No errors are generated. Very little to no disk activity in perf mon. There are no errors on the server, and no errors in the SAN storage system (which is also brand new). We have a duplicated system (same server and SAN system) as we were planning for an offsite DR and DFS sharing system, we replicated the data to the other server/SAN, and the same problem occured.     - Server 2008 x64 And Shadow Copy Backups/DosDev Hi All We're using Server 2008 x64 Standard for running Exchange 2007 and SQL Server 2005 plus a few small COM application objects and a small amount of file serving. When it comes to backup time I have to say I was disappointed with the Server 2008 option of full drive only. Its useful to be able to do that, certainly, but its not the only kind of backup thats useful. So, I decided to go the Robocopy route - an excellent tool for anyone unfamiliar with it. All went fine until I got to the point of wanting to get the Exchange edb files backed up. Some quick reading later and the combination of VShadow and DosDev (create a shadow copy, then mount it as a drive letter) seemed perfect. I got the x64 version of VShadow.exe from the VSS SDK and DosDev from one of the reporting tools. Version number: 5.2.3790.1830 (10/05/2007). The VShadow -Script=vss.cmd D: works fine and as various sites suggest. >DosDev L: %SHADOW_DEVICE_1% Returns: Current definition: L: = \??\GLOBALROOT\Device\HarddiskVolumeShadowCopy193 If I try to change to the drive I get: >L: The device is not ready.     - Move 2003 file server to new domain Hi We are in the process of a NT4 to 2003 migration. We are running a NT4 DC on domain X and a 2003 DC on domain Y in mixed mode. All out file servers are already on 2003. All users and groups have been migrated with ADMT from domains X to Y and all workstations have joined the new domain Y. Because of all the SID history being migrated with ADMT, all users on the new domain Y can still access the files and shares on the file servers on old domain X. Now we want to move these 2003 file servers to the new domain Y. How can we do this in way so all file and share permissions will automatically be changed as well? At the moment all shares and files on the servers only list the old domain X users and groups.     - Getting Event ID 333 error messages 60 70 times a minute Hi, I have W2K3 SP2 Standard server running SQL 2000 standard. I was trying to specify a non SA account to run SQL Server Agent jobs but when I entered the username and password of the account I got the following error. An I/O operation initiated by the Registry failed unrecoverably. The Registry could not read in, or write out, or flush, one of the files that contain the system's image of the Registry. The Event ID is 333 On closer examination of the system log I noticed that i was getting this error 60-70 times a minute and had been doing so for several weeks.     - Network Infrastructure Hi Guys, Hope Im in the right group. Im in a stage of fixing my network. This is my current setup. 1. I have an active directory server, which is mydomain.com, wherein also my DNS and DHCP is located. 2. My subnet is 255.255.255.0 This is my idea. 1. Have these servers: (Need suggestions on these) a. AD Server with DNS Server - is this a good practice? b. DHCP Server with ISA Server - is this a good practice? Other concern: I want my network to have access limitations. Here is a scenario. 1. In our network, only managers can use their laptop to access our network and internet. It can be wired or wireless. Unauthorized laptop should or must not access our network. But from the way the network was setup, they can access it through wire. I can filter the wireless using MAC Address filter from the routers. But if they connect through wire and know how to config TCP/IP they can easily access our network. Can this be avoided through ISA? Is there a way to filter MAC Address through Active Directory?     - HP ProLiant Opteron 1210 or Xeon 3040 I'm stuck between buying HP ProLiant ML 115 Opteron 1210 @ 1.8 GHz and HP ProLiant ML 110 G4 Xeon 3040 1.86 GHz. All the rest of the specs are the same. Difference of price is about =A310. But according to HP UK's website Xeon 3040 is discontinued. But my question is which processor is better? I have started MCSE, so I'll be using it for my home lab/server. PS. I've searched through the forum, only bechmark I found was between Xeon 5000 vs Opteron 200 series.     - External and internal domains and DNS Server Hi, I have the company.com Internet domain which serves the company's public Internet website at www.company.com. The authoritative name server for this domain is somewhere in the Internet. Now I installed a new domain controller on Windows Server 2008 for a new internal domain which I called company.com as well. I guess it wasn't a wise decision because if I type www.company.com on a machine that belongs to the internal domain, the address can't be resolved. It's understandable because the domain controller has the DNS Server installed which knows nothing about the external company.com domain. Is it possible to configure the internal DNS server to properly handle both the internal and external domain names?     - New network on different site - same or seperate domain? Hi there, Just wondering if anyone could offer any advice on this issue. I am in the process of setting up a new network domain in a new colo data centre. The plan is to setup about 4 new servers and eventually joing them upto our existing win 2003 domain running in another datacentre using a metro ethernet connection between the two. I was thinking of setting up the new solution as a new domain and once it was up and running properly then join it to the other domain. Is this possible? What is the best way to set this up?     - Disabled Domain Controller I have a DC that I thought was dead for good, so I removed it through asdiedit. Later I find out that because of other network issues that I have, I needed to have that server back up, so was able to resurect it. It re-registered itself in DNS and is serving login requests. But, it shows in Active Directory as disabled as well as there are no NTDS settings. Can this be fixed? If I log into that particular DC, it's Sites and Settings have the the NTDS settings, as it has never received replication from the other servers that it is gone.     - How do users still have 'unique settings' after Application Data c Hi, I am just wondering. I noticed App Data was getting too large for indivdual profiles and so decided to keep all profiles to access a single App Data so it could be administered easy and so I could 'add' settings for applications easily. But something wierd is going on. Programs such as Microsoft Outlook or Microsoft Word are retaining user's custom settings. This is perfect, as I wanted users to have this freedom. I just do not understand. For Example: In Outlook, all profiles have been set to acquire and save e-mail to U:\Email\folders.pst. However, the account settings have not. I always imagined this was saved in App Data or Local Settings, however, a) if it was in App Data it would conflict with other people's account details b) if it was local settings it would not work on other pcs.     - Access denied on Iomega Network drive in Windows 2003 R2 We have an Iomega 250Gbyte network hard drive that was used to back up files from a Windows 2000 server that has failed. This drive was available to all users on our network. We have installed a new server running Windows 2003 Standard Edition 32 bit with no access controls specifically invoked. The Iomega drive can be found and mapped in Windows Explorer but none of the folders or files on it can be seen or accessed. Any attempt to create a new folder, for instance, gives 'Access is Denied'. We have added now a second (new) Iomega 250 Gbyte drive that gives the same result. These drives are also now no longer accessible by other users on the network, whichever version of Windows they are using. We have XP professional, 2000 and 98SE users. The drives themselves do not have any way of setting access permissions so there must be something in Windows 2003 server that is causing this. Here are the details of the build: Windows 2003 SP2 - 2 GB of RAM - /3GB and /USERVA=3030 are set. Exchange 2003 SP2 The page file is set to 'System Managed Size'. I've ran the EXBPA and it comes back clean.     - Moving data between servers? Hello again, Over the weekend I tried to move tons of data from one server to the other. The source server is a DC and I was logged in as the Administrator for the domain. I have two problems I hope someone can help me with! 1) I got permission denied on quite a few files. Why??? I'm the domain administrator and this account owns all the folders, why would I get permission denied??? 2) The destination copy had all the permissions screwed up, like no permissions were preserved at all. How do I do a move and preserve the ownership and permissions???     - Memory Leak I'm having a problem where every few weeks or so, my server gets hosed. All of the sudden it stops accepting network connections. Usually a reboot does the trick. We also notice that an error is always written to the event log whenever this occurs. The errror is "The server was unable to allocate from the system nonpaged pool because the pool was empty." After doing some research on the error, we figured that the problem was a memory leak. We have been running pool monitor for the last week. The tag called STRG has climbed all week.     - ISA Server Dear Sir, We have a ISA 2006 Server running in Windows 2003 Server as a Proxy Server. While accessing a link of one website to upload some files ,a window is prompting for Proxy authentication. Even i provide login name and password , the following error is appearing Server Error http/1.1 407. But when i access the same link for uploading some files without Proxy, it is going through.     - Windows Vista/Windows Server 2008: GUI Improvements Required Hi, Evaluating Vista/Server 2008 for migration from W2k, W2k3, XP I noticed = a couple of drawbacks when using those OSs. I've compiled the problems and put them all into one issue here instead = of creating separate issues for all of them. -- 1 -- : Keyboard handling: It's very straining to use Vista/Server = 2008 by keyboard. It should by far be better supported, like in the previous = Windows versions. Current drawbacks are: -- 1.1 -- : Common Dialog File Open/Save boxes are missing keyboard shortcuts, e.g. for creating new folders (previously <ALT>+<F>-<W>-<F>). -- 1.2 -- : Using Windows Explorer with the keyboard becomes horror: -- 1.2.1 -- : Opening Windows Explorer (=3DWE) with <FLAG>+<E> gives = focus to the ListView instead of the TreeView control. So a reverse Tab = <SHIFT>+<TAB> is required to navigate the tree. (It's very uncommon that any action is required at the "Computer" node, so TreeView navigation is usually = *always* the first thing to be done in Windows Explorer.) -- 1.2.2 -- : Navigating the WE TreeView doesn't update the ListView. = It's required to hit the [RETURN] key to get the ListView updated. This makes browsing quite awkward to do. -- 1.2.3 -- : Tab sequence in WE is very strange! Usually, switching = focus between TreeView and ListView is just a one-tab sequence (you just have = to press the <TAB> key once). But after hitting [RETURN] on the TreeView, = the ListView becomes 4 <TAB> hits away! -- 1.3 -- : SQL Server 2005 Management Studio doesn't provide a quick = "Open Database Connection" shortcut (previously <CTRL> + <O>, now only <F8>-<ALT>+<V> [on German version]) -- 1.4 -- : Internet Explorer 7 doesn't provide a shortcut for setting = focus to the address bar (formerly <ALT>+<D>). So it's very hard to correct = typos after hitting [RETURN]. (Awkward, but yet best workaround: <CTRL>+<E> - <SHIFT>+<TAB> - <SHIFT>+<TAB>) -- 1.5 -- : The new Start menu is very unhandy. Just mentioning it to keep the classic view available in future Windows versions: I've traditionally arranged my (classic) start menu tree in a = way to quickly reach any program by simply pressing the <FLAG> key plus the = first letter of a Start menu entry to finally reach a program entry (e.g. <FLAG>-<P>-<O>-<W> which is "Programs - Office - Word 2003" ...or... <FLAG>+<P>+<D>+<8>+<S> which is "Programs - Development Tools - 8_Visual Studio 2005 - S_Visual Studio"). (This is more easy to do in German than = in English because of default entries starting with the same letter in = English [e.g. "Accessories/Administrative Tools"]). So I'll stick to the classic Start menu version. -- 2 -- : Copy File dialog doesn't provide useful information. Even = after updating Vista to SP1, the Copy File dialog still doesn't display which = file currently is copied. So when copying large files the user can't tell = which file is currently copied and, thus, isn't free for use. -- 3 -- : Color Schema: Hover color is (almost) same as selection color. = So it's hard to tell if an entry has been selected or if the mouse pointer = is just hovering above a ListView entry in WE. -- 4 -- : Back button in WE doesn't provide a history list. So it's impossible to go back in history and skip a recently visited folder that might have become unavailable. -- 5 -- : WE and Common Dialogs are missing "Navigate to parent node" functionality.     - Windows Server 2003 configuration question The hard drive crashed on the server of one of my clients and upon reinstallation, the IT person did not re-create the domain because it was too much work and he wants to wait until Small Business Server 2008 is out to reconfigure the server. Now the server is in a different workgroup than the workstations and it is creating big problems with permission and access, but I am running into a wall trying to get him to change it. His reasoning for making the change from a domain to a workgroup was that if he configured the server as domain again, he would have to redo all the workstations. Am I wrong in assuming that if he had configured the new hard drive with the same domain and users as before, the workstation should have just found the server again, just as they did before? When we unshare the folder, we got the error message "An error occurred while trying to delete share speech. The share must be removed from Distributed File System before it can be deleted".     - Windows 2008 and WebDAV Mini Redirector I can't use WebDAV webfolders with my Windows 2008 Terminal server. As I understand, Windows 2008 and Windows Vista share the same codebase. So I thought it shouldn't be too hard to make it work with Windows 2008. I searched for the driver that Windows Vista uses "mrxdav.sys" and it exists in some subfolder of Windows\winsxs. But it seems that it is not installed. Is there a way to make the WebDAV Mini Redirector work with Windows 2008? And if so, would that be supported by Microsoft?     - Edition of Server 2003? I just did a test install of Windows server 2003 on a system that I'm going to upgrade (soon) from 2000 server to 2003 server. I did a clean install into a new partition. The CD say "Windows Server 2003 R2 Standard Edition". There is Disc 1 and Disc 2. Disc 1 has a part number of X11-73011. When I installed the software and the system rebooted, Control Panel/System (along with the boot splash screen) tell me that I have Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition. Is this a known confusion of the versions? I searched Google but didn't find anything relevant. If Control Panel/System tells me that I have Enterprise Edition, is this the version I really have? The CDs AND the COA are apparently mislabeled! The COA with the 25-character product key says "Windows Svr Std 2003 R2 1- 4CPU 5Clt" (OEM Software). That sounds like standard edition to me.     - Inactivate a dynamic partition? How do you inactivate a dynamic partition? The Diskpart program only works on basic disks. Also, how do you tell which partition(s) are marked Active? I don't see that info in Disk Management snap-in. This question applies to Windows server 2003 (and Windows Server 2000, which I am upgrading from). Second, the one time I booted from a floppy (just as an experiment), and then told the boot loader to load the second partition on disk 0, then looked at Disk Management: Disk Management still told me that the FIRST partition on disk 0 was the "system" volume. The second partition was marked Boot. I can't find exactly what "system" means, or why the first partition on disk 0 would be marked "system" when I actually booted the computer from the floppy drive. Remote Desktop Users group is missing on my server 2003 R2 running SP2... The
server is a secondary DC in a W2k Domain. I have tried to create a user and
grant it Terminal Server User Access and, log on locally permissions but I'm
still getting the error mesages telling me the user has to be Terminal Server
Access User...

Any ideas on how to solve this problem?
