    - domain logon issue Hello. I am having problem on a member server running Windows Server 2003 SP1. It took 30 minutes to log on to the domain after a reboot. The server seemed to be forever hanging at "applying settings..." before it finally connected to the domain. I found a lot of errors with event ID 1053, source: userenv. "Windows cannot determine the user or computer name. (The specified domain either does not exist or could not be contacted.)     - Server 2008 thin client requirement - Advice Hi, Colleague of mine wants to remove laptops from his organisation and go with thin clients. No probs there. He has only 1 physical server, and would like to upgrade to windows 2008 at the same time. Is 2008 running DC, and terminal services a supported configuration ? Would need to be app mode as there will be 5 clients.... I could stick a VM in Hyper-V I guess for the TS reqwuirement, just want to get people's view on the best solution. Thanks in advance.     - Forcing "List in the directory" for a printer? At my office, we are currently doing some spring cleaning on our printers, rearranging some units, tweaking installations, etc. We have a label printer on the network and it's currently being shared by one of the workstations. All this is fine, and others can use the "Browse" feature to find it and access it through that machine. What bothers me is there is no "List in the directory" check box alongside the "Sharing" settings. It's simply not there. It would be useful if uses could go one place (Active Directory on our SBS 2003 server) to add printers instead of digging through two different interfaces. If I add the printer through the original workstation, however, I *do* get a "List in the directory". box. Can somebody tell me what controls "List in the directory"? Windows has so many hidden options in the Registry, I was thinking it could be as simple as adding a new value or flipping something from 0 to 1. I did find where the check box setting would be stored, at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print\Printers\ in the Attributes value for the specific printer, but setting bit 14 on and restarting the computer didn't force an entry in Active Directory. I realize I can also manually add a printer in Active Directory Users & Computers, but am not sure I can direct it to that particular workstation for the drivers. I've also browsed AD manually and have an idea which settings are needed and where, and might even try doing this manually. But what is the easiest way to accomplish this?     - No login window appears after server running for some time New IBM xSeries 3400 server running Windows 2003 R2 with all of the latest patches. Member server in an SBS2003 domain. Since going in the server has worked fine except after some period of time, we go to the console and the screen is totally dark grey. Pressing Ctl+Alt+Del does nothing -- no login prompt appears. Similarly, any attempt to connect via RDP doesn't give the login...just the grey background. This only happens after the server has been running for some time. We'll force a restart of the server and all will be fine for a day or longer (the login appears at the console and is available through RDP). Then, for no discernible reason, the problem recurs. Nothing strange appears in the event log. The only thing different between this server and other similar boxes that we've installed is the version of Pervasive SQL. This box is running version 10, whereas prior installations were version 9 or older. Pervasive professes no knowledge of the problem.     - Group Policy and the Legal Message For whatever reason, when I apply the message in GPMC the computers I applied it to don't ever display the legal message before login, or at all. I have the option enabled in my GPO, and the computer is also in the OU, and I also added the computer to the list of stuff it affects in the GPMC console, but still no results even after a restart.     - SCSI Enclosure Device in Windows 2008 Hi I have a storage array that supports SCSI Enclosure Services on LUN ID 254. In Windows 2008 this appears as Generic SCSI Enclodure Device under System Devices in Device Manager. I need to send SCSI inquiry on this device but I am not able to figure out which device name I should be using. I initially thought this will appear as another \\.\PHYSICALDRIVEn but it did not.     - View Processor Queue Is there a piece of software to show us what is in the processor queue? One of our servers has been throwing our monitor off stating the process queue is too large. I checked into it and found the queue length gets upto 12 when it should be around 6 or 8 at max. Although this annoynance lasts less than a minute and does not hurt production. We want to see what is queued at the time this warning is tossed by the monitor so we can determine if we need to separate roles to another server or tweak software already on the server to not use certain features.     - Resizing the C drive I have a Dell PowerEdge 1850 with a 67GB RAID-1 set runing Windows Server 2003 The C drive is 12GB and I want to extend it to 20GB I can blow away the D and E drives and recreate them later What is the best way to extend the C-drive. I do not want to rebuild this server as it has apps that I did not install or configure and I don't wanna have to figure them out. I have Partition Magic 8 I have Ghost 7.5 There is also NTBACKUP with ASR I thought I read that ASR doesnt restore Applications, just OS. This can't be true. If I use ghost I will have to leave the domain, ghost and then rejoin the domain (I've found in the past that ghosted when on the domain just puts the new machine into a reboot loop). The question is, if I make a ghost image of this 12GB C-drive, when I burn to the server again will it just recreate the 12GB partition or can I rezise to 20GB.     - WSUS 12GB to download!! Hiya I have used WSUS for about 2/3 years without much issue. Now I notice when I synched that there were 12GB and 75 files of downloads - which seems a huge amount. So far it has taken three days and has only done 25%. I am suspicous something is not right, as I have never seen such a huge download requirement before. Just wondering if this is something for me to be concered about, as it is like it has lost all it's history and started again.     - Problem with KB948496 Is there any known issue with the security patch KB948496, released by Microsoft in March. Each time I installed the patch on a particular "W2K3 R2 64Bits edition SP2", I can no longer be able to connect with "Remote Connection" to the Server.     - Static WINS mapping migration Done a lot of googling on this subject but can't seem to find the answers. I have a number of Windows 2003 WINS servers in a spoke/hub replication topology. There are some static WINS mappings scattered about the different servers but I'm looking to remove one particular server (call it SRV-A) from the topology but cant seem to see the recommendation way to migrate a static WINS mapping whilst maintaining 100% uptime and availability of the record. In the lab I had limited success manually readding the records statically to another owner (SRV-B), this bascially just duplicated the record on the new owner, 1 version of the records was set to infite with owner SRV-B and 1 set of records with expiration of next week and SRV-A as the owner. I then manually deleted all records with SRV-A as the owner but found that the SRV-B records would not replicate correctly. To resolve I had to delete the SRV-B records aswell and recreate. This obviously causes me an issue as by doing this I will potentially cause an outage in production while the records replicate naturally around the environment So the question is, does anyone know the recommended way of changing the owner of a static WINS mapping?     - DFS Upgrade Hello guys, I have the following problem: 2 Windows 2003 Domain Controllers(to keep it simple DC 1 and DC 2). Each DC is a DFS server with replication between. Because replication was very slow, we decided to upgrade both DC's to Windows 2003 R2, so we could use DFRs instead of FRs. DC 1: Windows Server 2003 -> in place upgrade to Windows Server 2003 R2. DC 2: Windows Server 2003 OEM -> we installed a new domain controller DC 3 with Windows Server 2003 R2 and removed DC 2. So current environment: DC 1: Windows Server 2003 R2 DC 3: Windows Server 2003 R2 (both SP2) We installed DFS on DC 1 and DC 3. Everything went fine until we started to replicate the DFS Folders. DC 3 seems to work fine (We don't receive any errors in the event viewer) Unfortunatly, DC 1 logs an error with event id 4004: The DFS Replication service stopped replication on the replicated folder ... So we have now 3 folders with data on DC 3 but the data is not replicated to DC 1. We stopped the DFS replication to avoid all the 4004 errors being logged. Any ideas? Remark: When upgrading DC 1 to Windows Server 2003 R2, we got the next problem after the reboot. Windows File protection: Event id: 64005 System protected file <file path> was replace with another version. -> winsevnt.dll We didn't replace the file because R2 should be the newest and correct version, no?     - Mounted volumes and Shadow Copy - 2003 Hi All I am trying to create a file system that uses mounted volumes within a folder structure. The file system needs to have Shadow Copies available. It appears that although I can create shadow copies for mounted volumes it is impossible for users to use the previous versions tools to restore files within these mounts.     - All my SCSI/HBA controllers stopped to work Windows 2000 Hello, After installing another HBA-card I lost all my SCSI or HBA devices. I was installing HP MPIO for Eva 4000, when I got blue screen. I managed to restore my system to a ide hard disk. Now all my SCSI controllers say that "A driver for this device was not required, and has been disabled." if I check them from device management. Same if I try to reinstall drivers.     - Deactivate Data Execution Prevention Hello, I have a Win 2003 R2 SP3 Terminal Server, DC and Printserver is a Win2003 SBS. The Terminal Server stops working because of some problems with the spooler service. I would like to know if I can deactivate "Data Execution Prevention" by setting it from "only neccessary windows programs and services" to "all programs/services with exceptions" (sorry, translated from german). I am not sure what services/programs are monitored before and after the change. Also the result is not clear. Currently, our programs stop responding until I start the spooler service, however, what will happen after the change - bluescreens? I know that the cause of the problem may be one of the locally used and redirected printers in the TS sessions, however, I do not know which one causes the troubel. And we have many printers, as there are 4 subsidiaries with many printers connected to the TS. The events do not tell me which printer caused the trouble, it just says that the spooler service had to be stopped. Right now I setup the recipient policy on the exchange server to accept mail from thedomain.com. However when I reply to a message the reply says domain.com and I need it to say thedomain.com.     - scheduler fails to start task five hours after session close Hi all, I have a strange behavior on my servers where the scheduled tasks fail to start with message "Could not start". I looked around to find a more detailed explanation message, but was not able to locate any log file. Googling for similar terms did not help either so I did a bit of investigation. Here is the setup: Servers are on a domain but are not the domain controller I open sessions onto them using Terminal Services. I logoff once I have finished a session, using the start menu. I added one task every hour on the hour that calls the same batch file with the same credentials, those of the session I opened. Here is what I observed: If I keep the session opened, the tasks run fine. If I close the session and open a new one more than 5 hours later, the first four tasks have run fine, but the last ones failed with the "could not start" message. For instance, I logoff at 9:05AM, log back in at 4:05PM, the tasks scheduled at 10, 11, 12, 1 and 2 worked but those at 3 and 4 failed with the "Could not start" message. All the servers on which this happens are under Win2003 server with SP2 applied. Could anyone help me with this? Should I post this message on another group?     - Unattend file for Server 2008 I deploy my servers using the HP Rapid Deployment Pack, which images servers using a standard answer file. My disks are a 146GB mirrored array. By default the install uses all the space and I get a 146GB C drive. I need the boot partition to be 15GB In Win 2003 I add the line ExtendOemPartition=7500 to the answer file and I get the partition size I want.     - Windows 2008 Enterprise - OEM or Licensing Hi all, I'm just about to take the plunge with purchasing Windows 2008 Enterprise across the board (I would use standard but am worred about the 250 user max on TS Gateway... is this per server or per farm?) If I buy Licensing I presume I will have to buy CAL's as well. However, if I buy OEM I will get 25 CAL's with each copy (presumably with each copy I get 25 users, not just 25?). Therefore, as OEM is cheaper, I'm presuming by drawback is that the product lives and dies with the server? Can I still use Virtualisation if required to run up to 4 hosts on each box?     - Windows 2000 migration to 2003 We have 4 DCs, each one at a different site. The main DC, with the global catalog running windows 2000 in mixed mode resides in NY. The 4 DCs are on machines that are 10 years old and need to be replaced. Ideally, I would like to replace each site one at a time.I would like to keep the same domain name. I would also like to transfer the machine name and IP address to the new server. Below are my 3 options. Which one is best. TIA 1. Use ADMT. From what I read, this tool is only usefull if the domain is different. Is this true? 2. Replace the DCs with the new 2000 machines, move roles over to the new machine and perform an upgrade to Win 2003 using ADPREP/FORRESTPREP AND ADPREP/DOMAINPREP 3.     - Can't format Soft-RAID5 on Windows Server 2003 Hi, I have a noname SIL3114 4-port SATA-Controller on an ASROCK P4V88+ (VIA-chipset with 2-Port onboard sata). With RAID5-BIOS, Windows Server 2003 started formatting my 4-HD-Array but couldn't complete it ("the format did not complete successfully"). The same happens when I use the SATA-Controller with a simple BIOS without onboard-RAID functions. Neither Quick-format nor longformat could complete the format.     - chkdsk raid 5 I have been getting insufficent memory errors when I attempt to copy large pst files from our file and print server. This is also the case when I try to run scanpst (yes, I know there is no support for networked psts). My question is if it is ok to run chkdsk over a raid 5 volume? I have ran it in read only mode, but am concerned about possible corruption. Any words to the unwise on how to conduct preventative maintanance on a RAID 5 volume? When I go to Data Execution Prevention under system properties, advanced perfromance options - I can't check either option even though I'm logged in as administrator.     - OS almost freezes while copying files to USB harddrive Hi! I noticed this strange phenomena while copying files to an external USB harddrive. When I copy (using the explorer) a directory containing about 20 5-10 MB big files and 20 about 2GB big files from my internal sata drive to the external usb drives, then this pattern emerges: - the external HD is busy all the time (its LED blinks) - the internal HD LED is : - off for 40 seconds - then half on for 10 seconds (blinks fast, giving the impression of half light intensity, compard to full on) - fully on for 25 seconds This then cycles, until the copy is finished. During the 25 seconds when the internal HD is constantly lit, the system is almost unusable. Moving with the cursor keys thru the open start menu takes 5 seconds for each move. That is : I press the cursor down key and only after 5 seconds the highlight moves from the previously selected menu item to the next. Also starting programs takes ages (actually everything that needs access to the HD). For example paint, notepad and write each takes 10 to 20 seconds to start up. (normally they start in a second). During the periods when the HS led is not lit (or "half" lit) the system works normally. I suspected the USB driver has problems with PAE and 4GB of memory, but I booted with /noexecute and /nopae options (as recommended in MS KB 900524, giving me 3,25 GB of RAM, opposed to full 4GB otherwise) and the problem persisted. Any idea what to do ?     - Cannot terminate tasks Hello * my Windows Server 2008 currently is in an unacceptable state: I tried to access a DVD with Windows Explorer and from a command prompt but the DVD seems to be broken because it did not work to read it. Now, I cannot close both the command prompt window and the Explorer Window any more. I have tried the close button, Task Manager "kill process", and taskkill from another command prompt but the windows just don't close. On Windows Server 2003 similar cases could all be handled at least with taskkill, so how can I do the same thing on Windows Server 2008. All other services run fine.     - Password expiration Hi everybody, I need to configure the password expiration for each user, on a Windows Server 2003 x64 Service Pack2. There are many different users, so I'd like to change their password expiration individually. I saw that it is possible to change, for all users, the default "Maximum password age".     - 2k3 changed it's name/IP now I can't find it on the network? Fresh install then I changed the IP address, name and I went back to original name and IP now I canâ??t reach/ping it on the network from that server I can ping everything fine how I can fix this issues.     - RIS and local admin account disabled I've googled and search MS KB's and can't figure out why my local admin account is being disabled on fresh RIS imaged PC's. here is my riprep.sif from my most used image. You will noticed i have the line "EnableAdminAccountOnDomainJoin = 1" in there. However, i've tried 3 variations. Removing that line, keeping the original which is "DisableAdminAccountOnDomainJoin = 1" but chaning the 1 to 0 and 3rd is having the current line.     - Virtual Server 2005/WSS/San Manager - No VDS Provider for Local Disks Hi all, I've set up WIndows 2003 Enterprise Windows Storage Server (WSS) guest in Virtual Server 2005 R2 with the intent of creating an iSCSI Target. The host OS is Windows 2008 x64. In WSS I have installed the SAN addon to the File Server Role and proceeded to open the Storage Manager for SAN's MMC however I receive the following error: "Unable to find Virtual Disk Service (VDS) or any VDS hardware providers installed on this computer. VDS and at least one VDS hardware provider must be installed for storage manager for SANs to be functional." I have tried setting the Virtual Machine to use both SCSI and IDE disk emulation, neither have resulted in addressing the problem. I have ensure that the VDS service is running and have also installed the SCSI Initiator 2.0 as mentioned in the 2003 R2 Deployment guide. I have also attempted to upgrade the Basic disks to Dynamic disks - same VDS error. Diskraid.exe shows no VDS providers installed. I would assume that a VDS provider would be included to allow WSS to talk to its own local disk subsystem. In fact Microsoft mentions this: "VDS uses two sets of providers to manage your storage devices. The built-in VDS software providers enable you to manage disks and volumes at the operating system level.     - Save Quicktime Settings with Mandatory Profile Greeings, not sure if this should be with server or XP group, but here goes. I have Quicktime player installed on XP Pro machines. Latest SPacks and updates applied. In Win2003 R2 Domain, and users have mandatory profiles and run at user level. Problem is getting Quicktime settings ( in the Quicktime applet in control panel ..ver is 7.3 or thereabouts ) to stick. For example if I open up the Quicktime Applet in control panel, and want to uncheck Play Movies automatically or set Mime settings so that Quicktime is default MP3 player, I can check and uncheck these settings, however when I close the applet, the settings are lost. I need to find a way to get these settings to stick, not for the user, but for me as domain admin. The only way I have found to make them stick, is to temporarily make the Domain Users administrators on a workstation, start the Quicktime applet, make the changes, logoff and remove domain users from Workstation administrators group. I could spend the next week doing this but I think there must be a better way... I am trying to find out where these settings are saved so that I can apply them via the users mandatory profile, but have come up against a brick wall. I have tried: Registry -- setting all Apple and Quicktime locations I could find to Users Full Control <mand.profile>\Local Settings\Application Data\Quicktime - Users full control <mand.profile>Application Data\Quicktime - Users full control Setting the Quicktime and Apple folders to Users\Change permission in Program Files I have also tried copying profiles that did work on the workstaion to the server and making them manadatory profiles that are called by user accounts, but the settings are not applied...they just revert to the default Quicktime ones. Any suggestions I am stumped. I cannot figure out how to make these settings stick. I need to do this because a particular application that uses Quicktime Plugin in IE7 casue IE7 to freeze because Quicktime automatically checks for updates and this seems to cause the whole thing to freeze at 100% CPU until killed by Task Manager.     - recovery console and enable/disable Hello, I need more informatio what recovery consoles enable/disable commands do. How do they affect on windows normal boot. And I am using Win 2k advanced I post another topic about blue screen earlier today (mytime). I tried to from recovery console to disable drivers and services that I figured to be the reason for the BSOD. Indeed now I can boot to windows. But now a HBA-card driver (QLA2200) is saying that it's not possible to install drivers due that it is disabled. QLA2200 was disabled but it's now enabled as boot. I have set /sos to my boot.ini. There I can see it's loading drivers that are still disabled in recovery console. The Windows can't get cluster to work without that HBA-card workin. Tag: Performance counters Tag: 111928

    - netsvc in w2k3? I have some scripts using netsvc from windows 2000 resource kit. But I can't find the same utility in windows 2003 server, it's downloaded resource tools. I tried googling for it but couldn't find any source that would give

maximum values of all those counters that what's the point of shipping
this application with every Windows system?...
