2008 Backup - Device Error?
Hello Technet,
When running Windows Server Backup from the Server Manager (2008) -
selecting VSS full or copy backup, it reaches around 3.8gb on C: then fails
with an "I/O device error". We've tried saving to alternate disks and network
locations, as well as running wbadmin, same error message. It appears to be
failing during the System State backup.
Server has been restarted, and checked for any more recent updates, but
there is no change. I've found reference to this particular error in Vista
where the solution was to go to System Protection and disable Shadow Copy on
the drives, then re-enable - though I cannot see the System Protection area
in 2008. Shadow Copies are not currently enabled on any drive in the server,
and still no change in the error message.
Is there another way to fix this problem?
Many thanks,
Steve Copley

Win2k3 Standard File Server - Missing Data
Hello all,
I've got a Win2k3 Std SP2 file/member server in an SBS2k3 domain. This file
server developed an issue where it would not connect itself to the domain.
This was fixed easily with a repair reinstall, but an important issue remains:
The file server uses 2 HDD which are mirrored. The HDD is partitioned into
the normal system/boot partition, with a logical D drive where user data are
staged.
Following the OS repair/reinstall, data files for about a 6-month chunk of
time simply no longer appeared on the data partition. Also lost was any kind
of data file on the boot partition, such as app license files, for example.
Nothing was done to attempt to restore the file server to a previous date
checkpoint, or LNG, or anything of that nature. Simply the OS
repair/reinstall. Of note is that VSS was not enabled for any of the
partitions at this time, or previously. I have combed the drives for the MIA
files with no joy. Also have run forensic data recovery on the partitions,
with absolutely nothing showing up as deleted or similar for the chunk of
time in question.
Am at a bit of a loss right now as to how to proceed from here to find and
restore the missing files. I tend to think they must be somewhere. Am I
wrong? Any advice or assistance in how to proceed would be much appreciated.
TIA,
Fred Orcutt Tag: LATEST SHOCKING HOT NEWS FROM MICROSOFT....... Tag: 115846

VPN data encryption type
Hello, i get that error:
The following error occurred in the Point to Point Protocol module on port:
VPN5-127, UserName: ABC\ata. The remote computer does not support the
required data encryption type.
I've an ATA "analog telephone adaptor"
which connects to a windows VPN 2003server and i get that nice error.
i googled and i found that i MAY need to decrease the Encryption level from
128 to 40 , i'm not sure that this is the solution.
because i've another windows 2003 VPN box which had that error in the past,
but now working and i don't see some reason, i made identical configuration
but i get same error i don't know what to do ,,
any Help or redirection would be greatly apperciated

Packet/Traffic Analysis
Hello all,
I'd like to monitor traffic flowing through my server 2003 server, and if
possible be more specific i.e. something came in on Port 80 and was accessing
www.domain.co.uk
It's so I can see what traffic is more commonly seen, where it's going, etc
and be able to display it in a nice graph, or chart, etc.
also, would the same software be able to monitor an external NIC from a
remote location to see what traffic is going through that as well as the
server NIC? i.e. if I have a load balanced setup I'd like to see what is
coming into the router as well as what is coming into each server.
Does anyone know of anything?
Thanks all

Excluding folders from My Document Redirection
Hello, I have implemented a Test environment as our company is soon going to
implement a policy for EXCLUDING My Music from folder redirection.
(As users have a lot of music crap, we think it should remain locally on the
machine and should not be stored on the server.)
My Test Environment: 1 Windows 2003 BOX, Windows XP machine. Locally
networked.
Folder Redirection:
Works fine. All the My Documents is redirected to
\\TESTSERVER\UserData\Username\User Documents
Roaming Profile:
Roaming Profile is also implemented and user profiles are stored here:
\\TESTSERVER\Profiles\Username
On the internet I found dozens of articles talking about creating a ADM file
for excluding My Music folder. These articles basically talk about creating
an ADM which edits a registry entry of "ShellFolders" which edits the "My
Music" location.
So I created the ADM file which edits the ShellFolder and points it to
%user profile%\My Music
Here is how 2 seperate GPOS are applied:
Please see this Picture:
http://img56.imageshack.us/img56/245/picture1fw7.jpg
As you can see in the Picture > 1. 1 GPO For Folder ReDirection
> 2. Other GPO For My Excluding My
Music
However I still can see My Music in My Documents.
When I check in the registry on Windows XP machine the entry for
ShellFolders is \\TESTSERVER\.....
instead of %userprofile%\My Music
I am referring to these links on the internet:
http://www.eggheadcafe.com/software/aspnet/31171752/exclude-my-music-from-red.aspx
http://www.experts-exchange.com/OS/Microsoft_Operating_Systems/Server/2003_Server/Q_21811952.html?sfQueryTermInfo=1+exclud+group+music+polici+redirect
Is there anyway by which My Music can be excluded in folder redirection.
Has someone ever implemented this? If yes please share how?

GPO Vista Issue
Hi,
Apologies in advance from a "newbie" here if this is the wrong forum-
seems the most appropriate on Google Newgroups.
I manage our school network- nothing too exciting- 3 servers running
Server 2003, mandatory profiles for the pupils and GPO objects to lock
down the desktop managed through Active Directory.
I am experimenting with Vista on our client machines at present and
have some very weird issues. I've set up new GPO objects and the
repository as explained in the Vista help guides for GPO, and edited
them with the MMC plug in on a Vista machine.
I have set up the Vista machine, joined it to the network, and then
logged in as a pupil. The first time the pupil logs in, the desktop
lockdown GPO objects all apply and the computer works as expected.
However, if that pupil logs into the same machine again, the GPO is no
longer applied. Which is very odd.
Any suggestions or advice gratefully received before it drives me
completely mad!
Cheers,
Steve Tag: LATEST SHOCKING HOT NEWS FROM MICROSOFT....... Tag: 115800
Networking issue
Hi All,
Please could someone help else ....
I have a desperate problem with my machine at work when i try to syncronize
with folders and files over the network. It can Literally take all night and
even a few hours during the day to actually syncronize my PC to the Server
connected at a different site. This for me is now approaching desperation and
i am seriously considering quitting my job over it.
I have a windows XP machine which connects to a Cisco 2950 switch which then
connects to a Cisco 800 router - it passes a firewall into the cloud back
through the firewall into a F&P server in a different town. I am unsure as to
how many hops it passes but i suspect the problem may be that either or both
of the switches are set to 10 mbps rather than 100.
i am unsure of why the Cisco 800 router is there. Can anyone explain given
the above information of what might be causing the syncronize to take as long
as it is. Just to explain further - once i have syncronized all folders/files
i only have to correct some text on ONE FILE but still get the sync problem.
Any information on the above would be very useful. If anyone requires any
further information please let me know.
Kind Regards.

How to allow non-admin to run scheduled tasks remotely?
Server OS: Server 2003 R2
Client OS: XP Pro SP2
I am trying to allow a non-admin user to run a scheduled task on a
remote server. According to the Help text, the user must be a member
of the local Administrators group, the local Backup Operators group,
the domain Server Operators group, or =93have been delegated the
appropriate authority, on the local computer=94. I would prefer not to
add the user to one of the three groups I mentioned. I have given the
user Read+Execute on the target task. I also gave the user Read (and
even Full Control) to the C:\windows\tasks folder on the server using
CACLS, still no dice. When the user brings up the server via UNC, they
don=92t see Scheduled Tasks. I tried running schtasks /query /s serverA,
but the user gets an Access is denied message. I confirmed that the
user can view the scheduled tasks folder when they are a member of the
Backup Operators group, but when they double-click on it, it doesn=92t
list the scheduled tasks.
How can I go about delegating the proper authority? Is there a group
policy setting in Server 2003 that will allow a user to run a
scheduled task remotely (i.e. \\server, double-click on scheduled
tasks, right-click the task and select Run)? I already tried providing
the user with Log on as a batch job, but that had no impact.
Thanks,
pimy
In Windows Help:
To run a scheduled task immediately
1. Open Task Scheduler.
2. Right-click the task that you want to run, and then click Run.

=95 To perform this procedure, you must be a member of the

WHS Windows Home Server
I looked and couldn't find specific newsgroup for WHS, so if this is the
right group... I've looked around and still wondering:
1. Who / what is the target market for it ?
If it's homes with a lot of PC's - it that market really big enough ?
2. Getting HOME server vs. "regular server 2003" ...
Would you know ... I would assume that the ISP charges for " a server" as
opposed to PC ? My reason for asking is that I've been watching it since
release and thinking "what can this do for users that Server2003
couldn't".
I thought there would be some software app included / some big reason to
"have to have it", but I don't see anything. From the write-ups, it didn't
offer the buyer 'anything extra'. In fact, the reviews show the interface
is pretty stark and for users that DID have lots of stuff to hook up, the
HP model doesn't even have many connections.
( I know some folks that wouldn't mind the price - but I'd find it hard to
justify WHS for just internet file access or " just getting another PC"
for file sharing /backup. )
I'll try it but wondering if anyone has/tried it and can provide insight ?

Re-Enabling Local Administrators Account
Okay, this one must get asked three times a month, but I'm not finding a
ready answer. We disabled the local administrator account through group
policy on a computer. We then unfortunately disjoined that computer from a
domain at the domain controller. The computer cannot be logged into by any
administrator: it's not in the domain any more, and the local administrator
is disabled. How do I re-enable the local administrator account?
I have an ERD Commander 2005 boot disk. I thought the LockSmith program on
that CD was supposed to have a checkbox to re-enable the administrator's
account, but I don't find it. Instead, LockSmith just changes the
password of the account. It's not the password I need to change.
Is there a registry setting that would correspond to disabling this account?
What are some valid approaches to re-enabling this account? I realize I
can boot in safe mode, but what good is that going to do me?

Domain Trust
Senario:
Company A Company B, there is a secure VPN tunnel between the 2 companies.
No trust was in place. A user in company A may need access to a file share
at company B. So company B created a user account
on B's AD for user in A.
User A tries to access the share, it prompts them for credentials, they type
in their company B account and all is good.
Sometime later a trust is established between AD's at A & B.
Now when User in company A tries to access that same share at B it no longer
works. They do not get a login.
The obvious choice would seem to grant User at A rights thru the trust to
this resource.
However this would require a ton of work because of the number of shares and
groups that are already in place at company B

Printmig Problem
I'm trying to migrate a clustered print spooler resource to another
cluster. Having trouble. I'm using PRINTMIG.EXE (version 3.1)
exactly the way I think I'm supposed to. Here's my script:
printmig.exe -r "d:\printmig\source.cab" \\newspooler
I've tried it with FQDN's and without. I've tried a couple different
versions of printmig.exe now too. The "source.cab" file was backed
up
from an existing clustered print spooler last night. It's big
(200+MB). I've tried the .cab file being stored on a file server as
well as on a local partition of the guest node currently housing the
clustered spooler resource. I've also running the script from the
cluster node currently housing the clustered spooler resource as well
as from an external executor (such as my desktop). Both
the 'source' cluster and the 'destination' cluster are identical in
every way except name and IP of course. The resources are identical,
the OS, SP, patch level, etc.
I get no errors. The .cab file appears to enumerate just fine, but
no
drivers, ports or queues are ever created on the destination spooler
resource.
Any help would be greatly apprecaited.

DNS/Active Directory Issue
I recently added a new dc that is also the new global catalog server. I was
unable to demote the old dc using the dcpromo.
I have 2 main problems:
1. Clients are not using the new active directory server, for example i am
unable to share documents, cannot add users because I cannot find the ad when
trying to change permissions, etc.
2. Clients are also not using the new dns server (which is also the new
dc/global catalog server) to access the internet. I know this because
everytime I unplug the old dc from the network no one is able to access the
internet and they all have the new dns server added to their nic settings as
the primary dns server.

My plan of action is to do a dcpromo /forceremoval first on the old server
in directory services restore mode (because I cant boot into windows normally)
and then Ill perform a ntdsutil metadata cleanup on the new server
I believe this will resolve my problem but I am not totally sure and would
like feedback if anyone has any suggestions.
Also I did transfer all the roles to the new server and this is a single
domain network with 3 dcs we needed backups thats why i have 3 dcs for a
really small network of 30 users/computers.
Is there any thing I should do different or should I just build a whole new
forest which I dont really want to do.
Thanks for any help and suggestions. Tag: LATEST SHOCKING HOT NEWS FROM MICROSOFT....... Tag: 115699
Windows Serial N° problem Same N° on different server
Hi,
I had a big problem.
For reasons, i had to use a Windows 2003 serial N° (for a DC setup) which is
actualy used by another server. The servers are on the same network but not
in the same domain.
Is that could be a technical problem ?

permissions question on server 2003
Everybody in the office has a drive mapping of \\server\share
On this share is a sub-directory of s:\photos
People need to have full rights to s:\ and they need full rights to all of
the sub-folders from s:\photos but within s:\photos I want to prevent them
from being able to create sub-folders or writing/editing any files in that
directory?
How do I set the permissions to skip this one specific folder in the tree
and still allow all of the permissions from s:\ to be inherited by
s:\photos\whatever? Tag: LATEST SHOCKING HOT NEWS FROM MICROSOFT....... Tag: 115692
No "Log Off" or "Disconnect" from Server 2008 Remote Desktop?
Hi, I've just setup my first Windows 2008 Standard server and noticed one
odd thing, it doesn't have the "Disconnect" option like Server 2003 did in
the bottom of the Start Menu. The option to Log Off is there, but it's
burried and I would like to put it back under the Start Menu and not hide it
under the options button.
So does "Lock" replace the "Disconnect" option?
And can I add "Log Off" as a button or link on the new "Start Menu"? (Not
the Classic Start Menu)
I do like the new Vista-esque menu, and especially the Start Search feature.
I haven't had any serious problems with Server 2008 yet. I did have some
minor SQL 2005 backwards compatability issues. (I needed SQL SP2, and VS
2005 SP1). And I had an issue with Remote Desktop data encryption, but I
fixed that by disabling "IPv4 Large Send Offload" on my NIC card properties.
I also had to upgrade my AV software. (Sheesh, is nothing backwards
compatible?!) I'm not running AD on this box, just using it for SQL
services. It takes some getting used to, but so far so good! Tag: LATEST SHOCKING HOT NEWS FROM MICROSOFT....... Tag: 115691

Independent FTP Hosting for Projects
Hi all
Can anyone recommend an FTP hosting site/service for project documentation?
Our exchange server is getting swamped by the need to communicate large
drawing files, so I need a straight forward procedure for uploading drawings
to a third party server space.
Ideally I am looking for something which can be configured to give a
corporate "feel" rather than some toy-town setup with fixed advertising
banners etc. Also need to be able to password protect folders to restrict
access for each client IYSWIM.
Any recommendations please?
TIA

The log is full of this two events. We also have a usershared folder on that
drive which hosts the exchange database which has auditing enabled. I have
just disabled it.
Could it be causing this problem. Also I noticed that the security log on
the domain controllers has many entries with the events 538, 576, 540 from
the exchange server.

Windows 2008 Licensing Question
Hi --
I work for a small development company and we are currently using hosted
services for web, e-mail and share point. We are considering bringing this
in house and I have a question about licensing.
We are looking at a 2-CPU machine to run Windows 2008 along with Microsoft
Exchange Server. We currently have a total of 15 users but may expand beyond
this point. Do we need licenses for both Windows and Exchange ? I have found
"Microsoft Windows Server Standard 2008 10 Client - Retail" online, however,
this does not specifically say how many CPUs it supports. I also found
"Microsoft Windows Server Standard 2008 32/64bit 1-4CPU 5CLT - OEM" which I
assume supports up to 4 CPUs and comes with 5 client license. However, we
are not an OEM so I would prefer to buy the "RETAIL" version to get support
from Microsoft.
If someone could help me understand better which products support multiple
CPUs and how the client licenses work that would be great!
Thanks

Cannot save RSS feed favourites within Internet Explorer 7 to roaming
We run a thin client (Citrix) network on a Windows 2003 domain. Our
press office would like to save specific RSS feeds to internet
explorer (we have IE-7 throughout our organisation). Although they can
add these to IE RSS feed favourites, they are not saved to the roaming
profile when the user logs off. Has anyone come across this, and if so
what is the fix?
Many thanks,
