    - Windows Vista/Windows Server 2008: GUI Improvements Required Hi, Evaluating Vista/Server 2008 for migration from W2k, W2k3, XP I noticed = a couple of drawbacks when using those OSs. I've compiled the problems and put them all into one issue here instead = of creating separate issues for all of them. -- 1 -- : Keyboard handling: It's very straining to use Vista/Server = 2008 by keyboard. It should by far be better supported, like in the previous = Windows versions. Current drawbacks are: -- 1.1 -- : Common Dialog File Open/Save boxes are missing keyboard shortcuts, e.g. for creating new folders (previously <ALT>+<F>-<W>-<F>). -- 1.2 -- : Using Windows Explorer with the keyboard becomes horror: -- 1.2.1 -- : Opening Windows Explorer (=3DWE) with <FLAG>+<E> gives = focus to the ListView instead of the TreeView control. So a reverse Tab = <SHIFT>+<TAB> is required to navigate the tree. (It's very uncommon that any action is required at the "Computer" node, so TreeView navigation is usually = *always* the first thing to be done in Windows Explorer.) -- 1.2.2 -- : Navigating the WE TreeView doesn't update the ListView. = It's required to hit the [RETURN] key to get the ListView updated. This makes browsing quite awkward to do. -- 1.2.3 -- : Tab sequence in WE is very strange! Usually, switching = focus between TreeView and ListView is just a one-tab sequence (you just have = to press the <TAB> key once). But after hitting [RETURN] on the TreeView, = the ListView becomes 4 <TAB> hits away! -- 1.3 -- : SQL Server 2005 Management Studio doesn't provide a quick = "Open Database Connection" shortcut (previously <CTRL> + <O>, now only <F8>-<ALT>+<V> [on German version]) -- 1.4 -- : Internet Explorer 7 doesn't provide a shortcut for setting = focus to the address bar (formerly <ALT>+<D>). So it's very hard to correct = typos after hitting [RETURN]. (Awkward, but yet best workaround: <CTRL>+<E> - <SHIFT>+<TAB> - <SHIFT>+<TAB>) -- 1.5 -- : The new Start menu is very unhandy. Just mentioning it to keep the classic view available in future Windows versions: I've traditionally arranged my (classic) start menu tree in a = way to quickly reach any program by simply pressing the <FLAG> key plus the = first letter of a Start menu entry to finally reach a program entry (e.g. <FLAG>-<P>-<O>-<W> which is "Programs - Office - Word 2003" ...or... <FLAG>+<P>+<D>+<8>+<S> which is "Programs - Development Tools - 8_Visual Studio 2005 - S_Visual Studio"). (This is more easy to do in German than = in English because of default entries starting with the same letter in = English [e.g. "Accessories/Administrative Tools"]). So I'll stick to the classic Start menu version. -- 2 -- : Copy File dialog doesn't provide useful information. Even = after updating Vista to SP1, the Copy File dialog still doesn't display which = file currently is copied. So when copying large files the user can't tell = which file is currently copied and, thus, isn't free for use. -- 3 -- : Color Schema: Hover color is (almost) same as selection color. = So it's hard to tell if an entry has been selected or if the mouse pointer = is just hovering above a ListView entry in WE. -- 4 -- : Back button in WE doesn't provide a history list. So it's impossible to go back in history and skip a recently visited folder that might have become unavailable. -- 5 -- : WE and Common Dialogs are missing "Navigate to parent node" functionality.     - Server in DMZ We have a Windows 2003 server setup for file sharing. We have internal and external users accessing this server. We have more external users accessing this server than internal users. We put this server in the DMZ. Is there a way to secure this server so that hackers won't be able to get to it? Thanks.     - Windows Server 2003 configuration question The hard drive crashed on the server of one of my clients and upon reinstallation, the IT person did not re-create the domain because it was too much work and he wants to wait until Small Business Server 2008 is out to reconfigure the server. Now the server is in a different workgroup than the workstations and it is creating big problems with permission and access, but I am running into a wall trying to get him to change it. His reasoning for making the change from a domain to a workgroup was that if he configured the server as domain again, he would have to redo all the workstations. Am I wrong in assuming that if he had configured the new hard drive with the same domain and users as before, the workstation should have just found the server again, just as they did before?     - Error Message Occurred For Unsharing a Folder We have a file sharing setup on Windows 2003 Domain Controller. When we unshare the folder, we got the error message "An error occurred while trying to delete share speech. The share must be removed from Distributed File System before it can be deleted".     - Windows 2008 and WebDAV Mini Redirector I can't use WebDAV webfolders with my Windows 2008 Terminal server. As I understand, Windows 2008 and Windows Vista share the same codebase. So I thought it shouldn't be too hard to make it work with Windows 2008. I searched for the driver that Windows Vista uses "mrxdav.sys" and it exists in some subfolder of Windows\winsxs. But it seems that it is not installed. Is there a way to make the WebDAV Mini Redirector work with Windows 2008? And if so, would that be supported by Microsoft?     - Server 2008 - Installing non-TS CALs Potentially silly question, but I haven't seen this addressed. I have 250 CALs purchased. Where do I tell Server 2008 that I have these CALs? These aren't for Terminal Services, just for people on my internal network to access the server. My 2003 Server has an applet off the Control Panel, I don't see the same thing in 2008.     - Edition of Server 2003? I just did a test install of Windows server 2003 on a system that I'm going to upgrade (soon) from 2000 server to 2003 server. I did a clean install into a new partition. The CD say "Windows Server 2003 R2 Standard Edition". There is Disc 1 and Disc 2. Disc 1 has a part number of X11-73011. When I installed the software and the system rebooted, Control Panel/System (along with the boot splash screen) tell me that I have Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition. Is this a known confusion of the versions? I searched Google but didn't find anything relevant. If Control Panel/System tells me that I have Enterprise Edition, is this the version I really have? The CDs AND the COA are apparently mislabeled! The COA with the 25-character product key says "Windows Svr Std 2003 R2 1- 4CPU 5Clt" (OEM Software). That sounds like standard edition to me.     - Inactivate a dynamic partition? How do you inactivate a dynamic partition? The Diskpart program only works on basic disks. Also, how do you tell which partition(s) are marked Active? I don't see that info in Disk Management snap-in. This question applies to Windows server 2003 (and Windows Server 2000, which I am upgrading from). Second, the one time I booted from a floppy (just as an experiment), and then told the boot loader to load the second partition on disk 0, then looked at Disk Management: Disk Management still told me that the FIRST partition on disk 0 was the "system" volume. The second partition was marked Boot. I can't find exactly what "system" means, or why the first partition on disk 0 would be marked "system" when I actually booted the computer from the floppy drive.     - Multiple logoffs required I have a small network (2 DCs running Server 2003, 10 XP workstations). Recently, a few people have had to select the Log off option twice in order to actually log off. The first time, they are prompted w/the standard "Are you sure you want to log off?" question, but even when clicking Yes, they stay logged in. They have to do the process a second time in order to successfully log off. This doesn't happen with every user, but for the ones who are affected, it happens every time. TIA for any ideas.     - EventLog Mixed We are using Windows Server 2003 SP1, last week we had a power outage, due to which server was re-booted without proper shut down. After getting up the server eventlog is all mixed up, that is all three Application, System and Security logs are coming in all three (if you click on Application, System and Security logs are shown as well, same with the other two). I checked the Log file names they are pointing to, and it seems to be right, Application eventlog is pointing to AppEvent.Evt, the other two to SecEvent.Evt and SysEvent.Evt respectively. We want to know what might've happened that has caused this and what can we do repair it, without affecting the rest of the server. The other abnormal thing after the power outage has been the delay in showing up of the login screen, after we use the remote connection to connect to the server, previously it used to load up immediately, now it takes around 20 to 40 sec, any idea why?     - Best way to copy user's home areas onto a new drive We have just purchased a new faster storage systen, and need to move files for the user's home areas onto it. Current we have SERVER1 connected to a dell storage array which only has one bank populated. The array is shared as \\server1\home So each user's home area is set as \\server1\home\username What we need to do is move all the users home areas onto a new set of faster drives going into the same unit (i.e the same server). Firstly, how could I copy the files accross and retain all the ownerships and permissions? Bearing in mind we are talking about 1TB + of data so I dont want to have to keep on confirming. Secondly, once the copy job is done, would I be ok to just rename the old share to HOMEOLD and name the new one to HOME?     - NTP Server Question Greetings, I have one medium AD domain enviornment with 2 DCs , but I want a small portion of my domain computer members to recieve their time from a different NTP source.     - Server 2008 write permissions for web sites I am moving several web sites from a 2003 to a 2008 server. These sites use an Access 2000 database file to store information, and also permit uploading image files. On the old server I just gave the IUSR_ and NETWORK users modify permissions to the specified folders and it worked. With 2008 I have had to give the "everyone" account modify permissions to the folders in order to be able to write to the db or upload files. Even then, for some sites, it is still not working. The sites are all written using classic ASP. What is the correct account and permissions that need to be given write access to the db and files folders?     - Installing Server 2003 x64 From MSDN Disk Not sure if this is the right place to ask this, but I have been completely unsucessful in trying to get a hold of Microsoft. I am trying to install a Dell Server using my MSDN disks. I have been trying to install the 64 bit OS for Server 2003. When the server boots up, it only gives me the option of the 32 bit OS options, not 64bit. I contacted Dell to ensure the system is 64bit and it is. Does anyone know how to get the 64 bit option installed? I have tried burning just Server 2003 x64 to a CD but the system doesn't boot from CD either. It keeps saying no OS found.     - Windows cannot connect to the domain I am getting the following message this server and this server has been on the domain for a while and was able to log in usually. But now its getting this message Windows cannot connect to the domain either because the domain controller is down or otherwise unavailable, or because your computer account was not found.     - RDP stopped working I don't know if anyone can shed any light on this. RDP stopped working on our 2003 Server. The machine is actually running SBS 2003 with sp2 (I am posting here since RDP is a more general Windows app). RDP was working on this server and then between one use and then next, several months ago it just stopped. Details: -Any client attempting to connect gets: "The client could not connect to remote computer." (Including localhost) -Remote Desktop is turned on in the Remote tab of System Properties. -Terminal Services is in Administration mode. -HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\TerminalServer\WinStations\RDP\PortNumber is set to 3389, but -"netstat -a" does not show port 3389 (although it does show others). -ISA is not installed and windows firewall is off. -As far as I am able to tell, windows thinks that Remote Desktop is ready to go but the port is not open.     - IT SLA's? Hi -- I know this might not be the correct foum, but I was hoping I could get some help. I need to create an SLA for our server environment primarily for our internal departments. Basically, we receive frequent requests to build new servers that may or may not require hardware purchases, software purchases, etc., in addition to laptop deployments etc. Typically, the turnaround is weeks to months depending on the nature of the request. To provide a baseline and guidinance to everyone, I wanted to set the expections so everyone knew that a particular request would take at least x number of days/weeks/months for turnaround. Most of the requests I get folks expect turnaround in a day or so; which is totally unrealistic. Not to mention I have more to do than just deploy/patch a new server/workstation. There are tones of dcoumentation and whatnot that accompanying any new server/workstation deployment. Any assistances, samples, or on-line resources would be great.     - Windows 2003 - Move from single drive to mirrored drives.. I had a quick question as I haven't found an easy or great way to do this yet. I want to take an existing Windows 2003 server install that is on a single hard drive and make it a mirrored install. Is there a way to do this without reloading the system?     - GPT Disk with Dynamic Volume offline after Server 2008 install won Ik have a 2,6 TB Dynamic basic volume on a GPT Disk. The disks is a raid 6 array on a promise supertrack 8350 controller. I boot from a basic disk. First I had Server 2003 sp2 with all updates installed and it worked fine. I installed Server 2008 enterprise (rtm) on the basic disk. The dynamic disk was offline, when I try to get it back on-line diskmanger just hangs. I tried Server 2003 R2 and 64 bit R2 again on the basic disk but I stil cannot get the volume on-line.     - Virtual Sound Cards? Hello, I am trying to set up a Dedicated Server that does not have a sound card with a Virtual Sound Card in order to get an application to run correctly. It seems every server I log into that has experienced unexpected shutdowns for one reason or another there is a good chance the following error is logged: ================================= Source: LsaSrv Event ID: 6033 An anonymous session connected from DESTRUCTOR has attempted to open an LSA policy handle on this machine. The attempt was rejected with STATUS_ACCESS_DENIED to prevent leaking security sensitive information to the anonymous caller. The application that made this attempt needs to be fixed. Please contact the application vendor. As a temporary workaround, this security measure can be disabled by setting the \HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa\TurnOffAnonymousBlock DWORD value to 1. After changing, I configure its IP Address the same as the broken one.     - WINS between two Forests? Hi, I have an external trust with another forest and I need to have WINS resolution between both forests. The physical sites are connected with a T1.     - Program's schedule stops after changing of windows time I have a program with schedule which is installed on Windows 2003 server. I set the following schedule in my program: 10:00 - 12:00 : state1 12:00 - 13:00 : state2 13:00 - 15:00 : state3 When I change the date and the tine in Windows 2003, my program changes it's state from state1 to state2 and after that to state3. But after 5 - 6 attempts my program's schedule stops to work. I restarted my computer, but it wasn't help me. Also I disabled automatic date & time synchronization in Control Panel. But Windows periodically return my time to the real time, maybe it reads the real time from the computer BIOS. I change the Windows time consecutively - every new date & time is after the previous date & time. Is there a way to reset date & time in Windows Server 2003 after several changes ?     - RC0 Hyper-V KB949219 is a joke! We have Windows 2008 64bit Enterprise running on HP DL380. It run perfectly. We add Hyper-V role, restarted it and after restart we run KB949219 update and than after restart it hangs at 54%. Configuring updates: Stage 3 of 3 - 54% complete Do not turn off your computer It is the same in another machine. We tried 5 times from the beginning. It seems that RC0 is a joke. How to install it ?     - Auto Shutdown and Restart Planning to schedule my Windows Server 2003 to auto shutdown and restart (just one time) during non business hour. I'm going to use Task Scheduler to accomplish this.     - Disable Print Job Notification Balloon Hello, Is there a way to disable the print job notification balloon in the system tray from the print server so it doesn't have to be configured on each workstation? On the print server I have tried Start/Printers and Faxes/File/Server Properties/Advanced/Unchecked "Show informational messages for network printers" but that doesn't work even after stopping and restarting the print spooler. Can this be set up as a group policy? Can we somehow set the balloon to only appear for a few seconds instead of 15 or 20? Can the balloon be setup so it only appears if there is a problem printing? We have been using the Certificate Authority to create digital signature-enabled authorizations on a huge number of change forms (PDFs) for the past year.     - Strange printer issue Hello all, We have a Windows Server 2003 print server connected to a Printronix L7032, which is a laser pin feed printer. When a large number of small in size print jobs are sent to it it prints 9 jobs, pauses 13 seconds and then prints the next 9, pauses. This continues until the queue is empty. As a temporary work around we have connected a HP JetDirect between the print server and the printer, with the JetDirect installed the printer behaves as we would expect: printing the entire queue without pausing.     - security log filling with events 538/540/576 We just set up a new SBS 2003 premium server and we're getting a lot of events 538/540/576 in the security log, I just counted 140 entries in 4 minutes. We have Symantec Endpoint small business 11.0 installed on the server and MozyPro (an online backup utility). Exchange, IIS, and SQL 2005 are also running and there are 6 client PCs. I've tried shutting down the services for SQL server, Symantec, and MozyPro to see if that stopped/slowed the events and that didnt seem to have an effect.     - Permissions required to manage remote computer When logging onto a server I am able to access computer management and view the event viwer, services etc. however, if I try to connect to another server from the computer management mmc, the computer management 'tree' is displayed but if I try to access any of the branches such as event viwer or services I get an 'Access Denied' error message. He will need an email account, but it's important that he NOT have access to any of the shares on the servers. My problem is that there are a lot of shares that are accessable to "Everyone". under Advanced tab ctrl+alt+del options

Under Computer configuration,Windows settings, local policies, security settings,
choose Interactive logon: Do not display last username, ENABLE it and you
are required to fill in USERNAME and PASSWORD.
