    - restrict access to file share by computer We are using W2K3 Standard R2 SP2 as a file server. We grant access to the share using share permissions and NTFS permissions and all works as it should. We would also like to restrict which computers a user can access the share from. User A has access to the share from Compter A but User A is denied access to the share from Computer B. So far we have been unable to do this. Any ideas would be appreciated.     - Adding user permissions to multiple subfolders Hello, This is a problem that I frequently run into and hope I can get some advice on. There are some shared folders, that have sub folders with non inheriting permissions (different set). I'll try to illustrate this with the following example: Folder name Data has read only access for User A, B, C and so on Subfolder DivisionA under this folder has full access for A (and no other access) Subfolder DivisionB has full access for user B (and no other access) And so on... Now I have user C who A, B, C ,etc report to asking for permissions to subfolders DivisionA, DivisionB Is there a way to add the access ACLs for user C to all subfolders without manually going into the permissions for each folder? Also, if someone can recommend a tool to report all ACLs in a folder structure that would be appreciated as well.     - Event Viewer Problem x64 Standard. DC to which FSMO roles were recently transferred. WSUS console installed recently and then removed. (Don't know if this applies.) Now, when going to any event log type getting "The interface is unknown" and no events are showing. (Worked fine until, apparently, the uninstall of WSUS console.) Have now moved all FSMO roles to another DC but not tried demoting and promoting again. Any insight appreciated! Many thanks!     - Cannot see installed x86 print driver on x64 print server We've got a x64 2003 R2 print server that we're adding x86 drivers to. We downloaded a Xerox Workcentre 255 PS WHQL driver and added it to the server for our 32-bit XP clients. When we attempt to configure a printer with it, under the advanced tab, when we try to select the driver from the pull-down, it's not there. It's visible in the Print Server properties dialog but not from the printer properties side. Couldn't find a Group Policy that may be blocking this. This is an like introduction, if you are seeking how to use and deploy the registry keys with Vb.net, just see the next tutorial (It'll be tutorial 6). In this tutorial I'll show what is the windows registry system and why use it. Project details: 1- What is Windows registry and why use it 2- How to read, write and change the registry 3- HIVES and their use 4- Definition of registry values 1- What is Windows registry and why use it. You can compare the Windows registry to a database. It stores informations related to Windows and other installed application on your system, but also Hardware. Think now if someone need to change the computer name via programming. How can he do this? Programmers can think of files (text files) to store the computer and windows information. But when file get big and heavy, Database will be more secure. And then they had (Windows builder) the choice of a database "Windows Registry". Microsoft Dot Net Frame 1.1 and higher have implemented a great solution for registry on their classes. This will replace the hard work and long lines of code that programmers have to write if they are using Visual Studio 6.0 for example. 2- How to read, write and change the registry Windows has a wonderful tool on it, named "Registry Editor". But you won't find it, unless you open the System32 folder on the Windows folder. But we can easily run it through the execute command it the start menu. Just type "regedit" (without quotes). Now the registry editor will open. Please before doing any changes on your registry make a backup. To do a windows registry backup: File > Export > Give a name for the file and select the All option box. The backup may block your pc from working for a short period of time. You'll see that there are 5 folder. Those are the main folder (named hives) and you can't add another main folder. Now you can select any folder and right click on it, then add a new sub-folder or value. By selecting any folder and right clicking, you'll find a list of action that you can do. If the action is blended (made not selectable), then either it's impossible or you don't have the rights to do this action. You need administrator rights to change registry keys. 3- HIVES (main registry folders) and their use The registry is split into a number of logical sections named "hives", those are the top main folder that can added, edited or renamed. They all start with "HKEY" prefix. HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT Stores information about registered applications, such as Associations from File Extensions and OLE Object Class ID's tying them to the applications used to handle these items. HKEY_CURRENT_USER Stores settings that are specific to the currently logged-in user. The HKCU key is a link to the subkey of HKEY_USERS that corresponds to the user; the same information is reflected in both locations. On Windows- NT based systems, each users' settings are stored in their own files called NTUSER.DAT and USRCLASS.DAT inside their own documents and settings subfolder. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE Abbreviated HKLM, HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE stores settings that are general to all users on the computer. On NT-based versions of Windows, HKLM contains four subkeys, SAM, SECURITY, SOFTWARE and SYSTEM, that are found within their respective files located in the %SystemRoot% \System32\Config folder. A fifth subkey, HARDWARE, is volatile and is created dynamically, and as such is not stored in a file. Information about system hardware drivers and services are located under the SYSTEM subkey, whilst the SOFTWARE subkey contains software and windows settings. HKEY_USERS Contains subkeys corresponding to the HKEY_CURRENT_USER keys for each user registered on the machine. HKEY_CURRENT_CONFIG Contains information gathered at runtime; information stored in this key is not permanently stored on disk, but rather regenerated at boot time. 4- Definition of registry values Binary Value REG_BINARY Raw binary data. Most hardware component information is stored as binary data and is displayed in Registry Editor in hexadecimal format. DWORD Value REG_DWORD Data represented by a number that is 4 bytes long (a 32-bit integer). Many parameters for device drivers and services are this type and are displayed in Registry Editor in binary, hexadecimal, or decimal format. Related values are DWORD_LITTLE_ENDIAN (least significant byte is at the lowest address) and REG_DWORD_BIG_ENDIAN (least significant byte is at the highest address). Expandable String Value REG_EXPAND_SZ A variable-length data string. This data type includes variables that are resolved when a program or service uses the data. Multi-String Value REG_MULTI_SZ A multiple string. Values that contain lists or multiple values in a form that people can read are generally this type. Entries are separated by spaces, commas, or other marks. String Value REG_SZ A fixed-length text string. Binary Value REG_RESOURCE_LIST A series of nested arrays that is designed to store a resource list that is used by a hardware device driver or one of the physical devices it controls. This data is detected and written in the \ResourceMap tree by the system and is displayed in Registry Editor in hexadecimal format as a Binary Value. Binary Value REG_RESOURCE_REQUIREMENTS_LIST A series of nested arrays that is designed to store a device driver's list of possible hardware resources the driver or one of the physical devices it controls can use. The system writes a subset of this list in the \ResourceMap tree. This data is detected by the system and is displayed in Registry Editor in hexadecimal format as a Binary Value. Binary Value REG_FULL_RESOURCE_DESCRIPTOR A series of nested arrays that is designed to store a resource list that is used by a physical hardware device. This data is detected and written in the \HardwareDescription tree by the system and is displayed in Registry Editor in hexadecimal format as a Binary Value. None REG_NONE Data without any particular type. This data is written to the registry by the system or applications and is displayed in Registry Editor in hexadecimal format as a Binary Value Link REG_LINK A Unicode string naming a symbolic link. QWORD Value REG_QWORD Data represented by a number that is a 64-bit integer. This data is displayed in Registry Editor as a Binary Value and was introduced in Windows 2000.     - WAN Network Addresses and Long Reach Ethernet Questions Hi there, Just a bit stuck on this and wondering if anyone can help me out. We are in the process of setting up another server solution in a second data centre. We are trying to joing to networks running on different IP addresses using a long reach ethernet connection between the two sites. We are in the process of getting the cabling put in but i am not sure on the network addresses to use to connection the two. We could take an address from our first solution and and put it on the end of the LRE conenction in the data centre but that would mean everything would be broadcast out over the lRE connection. The company i am working with suggested setting up a private network address range at either end of the connection. I am not sure exactly how this would work. Could anyone help clarify this. If i put 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.0.2 at either end the two machines that are connected would be able to talk but how would the other machines on the different addresses at either end talk? Would i need to allocate private IPs for all of the machines on the network to get them all to talk? Should the LRE connection at our existing solution go into the 2nd network card of one of the servers or into a switch? Bit stuck on this as things are complicated as i think the switch has got several different VLANs on it. If i put it into the machine directly i'm thinking we are going to struggle to talk to anything apart from that one. Sorry for all the questions but i'm a bit stumped!     - WSUS Setting question Does anyone know why the 'Allow Basic authentication (password is sent in cleartext)' checkbox on the Proxy Server Tab of the Update Source and Proxy Server settings in Options does not remain checked. This is only happening on my newer Server 2k3 R2 Enterprise X64 edition SP2 Server. I have two WSUS servers one for two seperate AD Forests and the other Server is Running Server 2k3 R2 SP2 Standard 32 bit.     - connecting to the CONSOLE using mstsc command using - instead of / Server 2003 SP2 Hi, This one should be a no-brainer: Will the following commands do the EXACT same thing? mstsc /console mstsc -console I have some colleagues here who insists using mstsc /console & say mstsc -console is wrong. I've used mstsc -console for years and never had a problem. Yes, I have looked at the help associated with the command using mstsc /? and mstsc -?     - Apple Macs connecting to SMB file shares I have several apple macs (10.4 & 10.5) connecting to files shares on our 2003 R2 server (which is a domain controller). They can connect fine using AFP (but files get truncated) and if I try to connect them via SMB you get several different errors relating to permission access or can not mount the volume but connecting via AFP is fine our via a PC. Now.......yesterday I setup a test share on the 2003 R2 domain member server, SMB connections worked perfectly. The share and folder permission were exactly the same as the original file server? I have tried also creating a new GPO and binded the macs to the domain and set the GPO to KB555652 which changes the digital signing of communications.     - Grovel.exe error nothing on the web can anyone help..?? Dear All Every time we restart our RIS server Grovel.exe fails. The error is really simmilar to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/939383 (but not quite the same) 2003 SVR running SP2 APPLICATION LOG Category. (100) Event ID.     - Server 2008 Administrator permissions Hello, On a Windows Server 2008 DataCenter edition box, we've made a new user called ServerAdmin and put it in the Administrators Group. Now, the original Administrator account works fine, but the ServerAdmin account has issues. If you right click on My Computer and try to go to Manage, it says permission denied. If you simply try to open the C drive, it says permission denied. Yet, I can go into the properties of the C drive and change them, after assigning ownership to the Administrators group. But even after changing the ownership (and yes Administrators group has full control on the drive) I get the permission denied error when trying to access the drive. Since the original Admin account seems fine, it must be require something other than simply assigning users to the administrators group and having them act the same or what?     - WinServer 2003 - Tired of italic font introduced with SP2 I am tired of *everything* being in italics in Windows Server 2003 SP2. As I access it through Remote Desktop, I cannot even use ClearType, so using apps strains my eyes more than necessary. Is there any way to get rid of it and use a normal font instead? Cheers ss.     - Hyper V and Guest with intermittent RDP connections I have a Dell 2950 running server 2008 X64 that is giving me a heck of a time getting guests to run properly. The first issue is RDP coonections seem to drop on the host for no reason, a reboot clears this sometimes. I removed the host machine from the domain and that seemed to fix that problem along with a limited connectivity error I was getting on the hosts brodcoms NICs. I have two 2008 guests and two 2003 guests and all four of them have this limited connectivity issue. They can be added to the domain and can access the internet but RDP sessions are intermittent. I disabled the firewall on all the guests with no luck. On my host server I have one NIC dedicated with a static IP for RDP, when I installed the hyper v role I only checked the 2nd brodcom nic for it to use during the install so I cannot figure out why the network connectivity is so flaky.     - Beta License getting ready to expire what now..? Ok I hope I'm not alone in this... I have the Beta 6001 build of Windows Server(R)2008 Standard and the product key I was given when loaded is about to expire. I went through my MSDN account and got a key generated for OS, however thekey is not being accepted as valid. I called support, they said they do not have a key for Windows Server 2008, there is an issue with this and they are aware of it. They suggested I call an activiation number to have my activiation extended, the people on this number had no idea as to what I was asking about.     - RPC dependant services wil not run I hope someone can enlighten me a bit as I have been unable to find a solution: I am running a Win 200 advanced server which cannot recieve updates except manually either on line or via WSUS. I am also running Terminal server with about 6 clients connecting who seem to be unaffected. BITS and several other services which list their dependency as the RPC service will not run most commonly with the "Error: 1068 the dependency group or service failed to start" the following services have other errors as well and will not run: Removeable Storage,--( error: 1083 the executable program that this service is configured to run in does not impliment the service) Routing and Remote Access, --,( error: 1083 the executable program that this service is configured to run in does not impliment the service) System Even Notification, --,( error: 1083 the executable program that this service is configured to run in does not impliment the service) Windows Service Pack installer service, --( Could not start... ...The service did not return an error. This could be an internal windows error or a service error.) I have looked everywhere for a solution to this but can find no documentation on how to approach this.     - Everything went read only on NTFS Over the last weekend I tried to do a 1.5TB data migration from an old server to a new machine using xcopy. I didn't know about robocopy at the time. The old server is running Win2K3 ES. The new server is running Win2K3R2 ES. All the data copied but when it hit the destination all the permissions on the files were either gone or wrong. So I turned the shares on the older servers back on and figured I'd try it again this coming weekend. The problem is, on the OLD servers, all the data, files and folders has been set to read only. This is on two servers. Right clicking and going to properties won't let me remove the read only. Well, it acts like it's removing it but really does not.     - WDS Server Management Rights Hello, I currently have setup a working WDS server. I am a network administrator with domain admin rights and have no problem connecting to the services with the MMC snapin. Ideally we want the desktop support staff to connect using the MMC and manage the images instead of a net admin. When I have the support staff connect the MMC snapin says it cannot find the service on the selected server. It works when I add them to the local admin group on the server. It is not a desirable practice to add them to the local admin group on the server. WDS will be installed on some domain controllers in the smallers which do not have local groups. How do I give the support staff rights to manage WDS without giving them any type of Admin rights? Appreciate your help.     - Upgrading Domain Controller with Standard SP1 to R2 - fails Recently i have been upgrading all the servers to R2 with the exception of DCs. Upon upgrading one dc it prompted me to update the schema which i did with adprep /forestprep. After i ran the setup to install R2- it asks for product key to enter (so it can update the old standard to standard R2) after i enter my R2 key it comes back with invalid key. Very strange since this same product key works on all other standard servers equipped with Standard SP1 that i converted to R2. I did a little investigating to see if this only happened on that specific dc, so i try to upgrade another different dc to R2 and after i enter the product key its says invalid.     - Robocopy and specific network adapters Hello I am setting up a script for robocopy and wondered if there is a way to tell robocopy to use a certain network adapter. I have dual adapters on both servers and want to use one from each connected to a gigabit switch (not connected to the network) for the file copy. I was thinking that I could specify the ip address I am using on each one like so. robocopy "\\172.21.1.200\file" "\\172.21.1.201\file" Would this be the proper way to specify the network adapters to use?     - Windows 2003 Domain, domain computers clocks off by an hour I just upgraded from a windows 2000 domain server, to windows 2003. The member computers on the domain all run windows 2000. For some reason all the computers on the domain are exactly one hour slow. When I run the following command via netlogon net time \\s3a-56dmz01.s3a-upland.mydomain.com /set /yes the 2000 computers all sync however they show the time zone as +7 as opposed to +8. I've gone through and verified everyones time zone and that of the server. The windows 2003 domain controller (s3a-56dmz01) is set up to sync with an external time server as per kb 816042.     - Windows Server 2003 DNS Server question We have a DNS Server running that is getting errors in the event log about being unable to connect to a domain controller. The thing is, we don't have a PDC, yet the server is set to join a domain. Does a DNS Server running Windows Server 2003 need to be a member of a domain, or can it be just in a workgroup? I checked the Configure Your Server log, and it was initially setup as a Domain Controller with Active Directory, but those were later removed along with the DNS server. The DNS server was immediately reinstalled, of course. Based on this information, I'm pretty sure it can be safely removed from the non-existent domain, but I would like to wait for confirmation.     - Why do clents and my new E2k3 server that exists in the root forest I have a root domain 'parent.com'. I have a child domain 'child.parent.com'. Lately I've been noticing on my router syslogs that some of my XP clients on parent.com have been hitting the child ADC over tcp 389 and 88. Also, a new E2k3 server I built on parent.com last week is hitting/receiving traffic over tcp 3268 & 389 to/from the child ADC. Shouldn't this traffic be directed to the parent.com ADC/GC? I've also noticed that the E2k3 server is sending Echo requests to the child ADC about every 10 mins. I've checked my 2 parent ADC's and they are both GC's. Any help would be appreciated.     - Moving a Terminal Server Licensing Server Hi all. Looking for a quick answer: I have a client with a Terminal Server with TS licensing installed on the TS itself. Because the TS is malfunctioning, we are replacing it, but before doing so we need to install TS Licensing on the domain controller and migrate the licenses. But, on the second night, it also again backup up to backup1.bkf and = just adds to that file. What I would like to have happen is night1 backup to backup1.bkf, then = make a new file say backup2.bkf, the next night backup3.bkf.=20 Is there any way to do this? I tried Append or replace backup selection, = but it always saves to the same file.     - Windows 2008 & Win XP Client blues - Network name cannot be found Hi, everyone! I've just installed Windows 2008 Enterprise in a Virtual PC 2007 virtual machine. The server is set up as a PDC with it's own domain forrest, and has a DNS server. DNS resolves Ok, but I have 2 major issues. 1) If connecting to/from WinXP / Windows 2003 computer, the network share is visible, but I cannot copy files. The operation fails after a few seconds, with the "Network name cannot be found" (or "is not available") error. This works OK, if the client is Vista, so I presume it's a SMB 2.0 issue. Any hints on how to force the w2k8 box to use SMB 1.0? 2) From the w2k8 box, I cannot browse to www.microsoft.com, www.mozilla.com, and a few other international sites. DNS resolution works fine (ping is ok), website is found, but I get stuck on the "waiting for response". Local (in my country) sites work fine; everything works fine from other computers in my main domain. Help would be appreciated.     - New SBS 2003 R2 server does not respond to ping I have just added a new SBS 2003 premium server to my exisiting 2003 server and have assigned the new server the DC role. Eveything seemed to be ok apart from GPO that doesn't work the old server and the clients are all expecting it to come from the old DC, so I ran dcdiag and it reported that the new SBS DC does not respond to ping and gave Win32 error 11010. I have checked and I cannot ping from the command line on any client. Everything else works fine on the new DC all help appreciated. Install Windows 2008 Server 2. Setup static IP on physical network card 3. Deploy Hyper-V roles 4. In Virtual Network Manager created an internal only network 5. Pointed internet network to the internal network 10.Disable firewall on host in relation to the internal network Guest OS receives DHCP from the RRAS Guest OS is able to ping 192.168.1.1. Guest OS is able to resolve internet DNS name. Guest OS cannot traverse through NAT to the internet. My primary goal is to enable Guest OS(s) ability to reach the internet.     - NTBackup fails, Insufficient memory available I've got a Windows Server 2003 sp2 DC, patched completely up to date. Over the past few months I've been having an intermittant problem with it failing with the message "Insufficient memory available". It writes an 8017 message into the Event Log. The server only has 512mb, but the only function it servers is backup, and typically the is over 150mb available. I've checked out kb828402. I have a later version of NTBackup, so the hotfix won't install. NTBackup version 5.2.3790.3959, which includes the hooks for backing up Exchange. I am backing up to a USB 2.0 external drive on a file share attached to another server on our network. But I just found out there was a MSMQ with AD Integration installed by a third party program product support. In fact, before finding this happen, there have been some strange things happening.     - Printer Server and Client Drivers This might be a shot in the dark, but we recently created a new windows print server running on Server 2003 R2, to take over for our aged server 2000 print server. All the queues seem to work and you can print to the printers on the new server just fine. However, we have a very simple script that runs on various machines to add a default printer. This script has always worked just fine with the old server, but when we change the script to point to the new server (just replacing the server name because the print queue names are the same on both) we sometimes (NOTE I said SOMETIMES) get a script error of "The remote procedure call failed". Also, if the script fails, and you run it manually after finishing the logon (the script is a logon script) then it will generally work fine. We went round and round on this and finally ran a packet sniffer on the traffic. One thing we noticed is that one the failed attempts, the client seems to be trying to download a printer driver from the new server. Hard to say from the packet capture if it was successful, but we HAVE determined that even though the new server has a much newer print driver, the clients always use the older driver they apparently downloaded from the old server. We've also received occasional reports of people adding printers from the new server and not getting a driver properly. My questions are this: 1.) Is there anything I need to do to allow the print server to download drivers? Is there anything (permissions etc) that could interfere with that? 2.) If a client has an older driver than the one the server has, will it attempt to download the newer one? If so, how often will it attempt it? Every time it tries to add the printer? We've implemented a screen on our User's userprofiles directories.
Whenever FSRM blocks a screened file type it creates a .tmp file in
its place (in the userprofile). Obviously, this creates space
issues. Anybody seen or heard of this before.

Hi,

I have not had this issue. What file type are you blocking. I block almost
every file type except the ones my users need like .tmp, .xls, .txt, .doc etc.

We are blocking media files, MP3, MOV, AVI, etc. etc. etc.
