    - Ntbackup Failure Hello, I am running a scheduled NT backup nightly job on two data partitions. I am getting a very intermittent error that has become increasingly more apparent. I am backing up to a USB 2.0 external drive on a file share attached to another server on our network. I get this error in the NT backup log: Error: E: is not a valid drive, or you do not have access. Error: An inconsistency was encountered in the requested backup file.     - Any network performance impact by MSMQ hi all, THank you for your help in advance. I am not familliar with MSMQ. But I just found out there was a MSMQ with AD Integration installed by a third party program product support. In fact, before finding this happen, there have been some strange things happening. Some of the PCs were freezing (or slow) for couple minutes some times a week. Besides, when the only a promary DC rebooted, the client lost the domain connection (but we have a secondary one running), which this never happened before. Any ideas or inputs?     - Windows is running really Slow Need some help. I have a newer computer running windows 2003 stand. ed. with exchange server 2007 and acting as a web server. The computer ran great for 6 months. Did not change anything. Now the computer runs great for about 15 mins to an hour from boot up.     - New upgraded 2003 lost share connection after a while Hi i have recently upgraded my windows 2000 DC to 2003 sp1 STD server (he is my master domain) Now at every 15:00 pm (give or take) all share and printer become unavailable to all my XP sp2 client (all map drive) !! MAP DRIVE DISCONNECTED i can ping the server i can access the server in remote using dameware i CANT do \\ServerName\ it says Network path not found Firewall is not activated when i reboot the server its all ok again until 15:00 pm ...     - Printer Server and Client Drivers This might be a shot in the dark, but we recently created a new windows print server running on Server 2003 R2, to take over for our aged server 2000 print server. All the queues seem to work and you can print to the printers on the new server just fine. However, we have a very simple script that runs on various machines to add a default printer. This script has always worked just fine with the old server, but when we change the script to point to the new server (just replacing the server name because the print queue names are the same on both) we sometimes (NOTE I said SOMETIMES) get a script error of "The remote procedure call failed". Also, if the script fails, and you run it manually after finishing the logon (the script is a logon script) then it will generally work fine. We went round and round on this and finally ran a packet sniffer on the traffic. One thing we noticed is that one the failed attempts, the client seems to be trying to download a printer driver from the new server. Hard to say from the packet capture if it was successful, but we HAVE determined that even though the new server has a much newer print driver, the clients always use the older driver they apparently downloaded from the old server. We've also received occasional reports of people adding printers from the new server and not getting a driver properly. My questions are this: 1.) Is there anything I need to do to allow the print server to download drivers? Is there anything (permissions etc) that could interfere with that? 2.) If a client has an older driver than the one the server has, will it attempt to download the newer one? If so, how often will it attempt it? Every time it tries to add the printer?     - Add Printer to All Users? Hello, We don't use roaming profiles. We are testing out using a Windows print server, however, we found out that the Windows printers are dependent on the user profile of the logged in person. So the help desk can't install printers logged in as themselves because when the user logs in the printers aren't there. Is there any way to get around this so that printer installs would be workstation associated and not associated with a particular user? We are also concerned about when a user logs into a workstation other then there own they won't have any printers. Could printers be associated somehow to "All Users" or the workstation so that whoever logs in will get the printers? Thanks for any suggestions!     - Windows 2003 reverts to previous password after reboot I have several Windows 2003 x64 machines that are on a workgroup (not a domain). They use file sharing and two mirrored SQL servers between them. Every time these machines reboot, either manually or because of an update, they revert back to their previous administrator passwords.     - Remote Desktop Disconnected - error in data encryption I am on a Microsoft Windows Vista x86 SP0 system and I just created a Microsoft Standard Server X64 and I am remotely connecting to it. I am getting an error and losing network connection: Remote Desktop Disconnected Because of an error in data encryption, this session will end. Please try connecting to the remote computer again. OK Help. I click OK On Control Panel, System, Remote Settings, System Properties for the Remote tab, I have selected Allow connections from computers running any version of Remote Desktop (less secure), and then I changed it to Allow connections only from computers running Remote Desktop with Network Level Authentication (more secure). I have changed it to NLA and it doesn't matter which one I go to. I am not sure what is happening or why this is happening. I just built these yesterday and I did the updates and they are on the same switch and in the same server room as other systems, and they were Server 2003 Standard x64 systems but I formatted the drives.     - VMConnect from Windows XP/Vista Hi We installed the latest Windows 2008 Enterprise x64 with Hyper-v role. Everything works fine including connection with vmconnect.exe on that machine. May because of the x64 os the vmconnect.exe ends up with a .NET error when using with windows XP: Faulting application vmconnect.exe, version 6.0.6001.17101, stamp 473fa981, faulting module kernel32.dll, version 5.1.2600.3119, stamp 46239be1, debug? 0, fault address 0x00012a5b.     - Server not displaying the correct amount of memory installed Hi, I have installed 2gb of RAM into a HP DL380 G3 server running Windows 2003 standard version, but when I look at the system proerties through control panel it only shows 768mb of memory, I have run the HP Management agent on the server and looked at the config for the DIMM's and it displays all 4 slots have 512md sticks installed. is there a way of getting the OS to display the correct amount of memory installed?     - contingency for print server Hi all. I have a windows2003 server acting as a print server which shares out many printers for my domain users to map. However recently there was a motherboard failure and though i have a 4hours response contract for this server, it took a whole day to recover the server.     - Windows Server 2008 GUI Hi, I am now struggling with a number of the great improvements Microsoft did to Server 2008, in particular: - RegEdit don't have "closed" and "open" folders in the left treevew pane anymore. All folders regardless of state are just pale yellowish supposedly beautiful pieces of useless work. If the right pane (values) is selected, one can't tell which folder the values belong to. Is there any way to fix it and may get the old good 2003 icons? - WinMail panels now use 1 pixel wide splitters. To resize a panel, I now have to position the mouse exactly on that 1 pixel line, which is it least 5 times harder than in Server 2003. Have anyone tried to do it via RDP on a Windows Mobile Device?     - Windows 2003 DHCP Monitoring Previously our company had Novell DHCP services, and this provided us a live monitor of all DHCP Requests, Acknowledgements, Denies, etc. The Windows DHCP server seems to be lacking any kind of monitoring.     - Printing from a PC outside domain I have a situation where we have 3 production stations that all have their own domains and on each there is a Printer attached to one of the PC's and shared. I have 1 mobile station that has a single PC on it that is used by each of the 3 prodution stations as needed. It is a stand alone workstation not joined to any of the 3 domains but... They occasionally need to print from the mobile station which has no printer of it's own. Is it possible to print from a computer that is not part of a domain to a printer that is part of a domain? If it helps - all 3 of the production stations are clones of each other including IP schemes. The mobile station has a static IP that is within the IP schema for the production stations so TCP/IP communication already works fine.     - GPO Software Deployment - DNS Alias We have recently replaced our main file server, migrating all files\software. Currently have 3 GPO's in place that were reponsible for deploying Office, Visio STD and Visio Pro. We should have used DFS, but that is water under the bridge right now. I had thought that a DNS Alias would allow the GPO's to contact the new file server, even though the server name was different...however this does not appear to be the case. I have put the entry in for disabling strict naming, and verified that the server is at least listening for the Alias as well. However the GPO's will not install. Keeps advising that the source location is not available. But when I go to the path via UNC, I can access. Is there anything I can do to resolve?? I don't want to re-create the GPO's and have a couple hundred clients re-install. Server in Question is running 2003 R2 SP2 Enterprise, 64bit edition.     - Server Console login I have a Server 2003 server that is running Exchange 2003. Several times over the past few months it has locked the console login, so I can't get response when using CTRL+ALT+DEL. I can RDP in and all is running fine, but when I try CTRL+ALT+DEL at the console, it won't respond. When I use mstsc /console, it allows me to enter the login information, but then goes to the same blank screen as at the console itself. Since this is on a KVM, I setup USB mouse and keyboard, but CTRL+ALT+DEL still didn't work. The mouse moves around the screen fine. It is running Symantec for Exchange, Symantec (with the proper exceptions), and the Blackberry Enterprise software. If I reboot, it is fine. I've tried stopping and restarting Symantec and other services, but that doesn't seem to help. I checked the memory usage, and it looks like there is plenty free (2GB total/410MB available, 141112 Kernal/105316 paged/35796 nonpaged). The CPU usage is only 2%, and the network utilization is barely moving. I also noticed the Windows Firewall/ICS services was running, although the Firewall in Control Panel was off.     - Windows 2003 R2 x64 intermittently hangs New Windows 2003 R2 x64 server, Quad core proc, 12gigs ram, dual HBA fiber attached SAN storage. 3 SAN data volumes (2 - data volumes and 1 for user folders, mapped to look like one share). Server will suddenly seem to stop responding, sort of. Very slow browsing of the mapped drive. Server is still responding, and RDP to it, and open both data drives, but cannot open the use folder volume. No errors are generated. Very little to no disk activity in perf mon. There are no errors on the server, and no errors in the SAN storage system (which is also brand new). We have a duplicated system (same server and SAN system) as we were planning for an offsite DR and DFS sharing system, we replicated the data to the other server/SAN, and the same problem occured.     - Server 2008 x64 And Shadow Copy Backups/DosDev Hi All We're using Server 2008 x64 Standard for running Exchange 2007 and SQL Server 2005 plus a few small COM application objects and a small amount of file serving. When it comes to backup time I have to say I was disappointed with the Server 2008 option of full drive only. Its useful to be able to do that, certainly, but its not the only kind of backup thats useful. So, I decided to go the Robocopy route - an excellent tool for anyone unfamiliar with it. All went fine until I got to the point of wanting to get the Exchange edb files backed up. Some quick reading later and the combination of VShadow and DosDev (create a shadow copy, then mount it as a drive letter) seemed perfect. I got the x64 version of VShadow.exe from the VSS SDK and DosDev from one of the reporting tools. Version number: 5.2.3790.1830 (10/05/2007). The VShadow -Script=vss.cmd D: works fine and as various sites suggest. >DosDev L: %SHADOW_DEVICE_1% Returns: Current definition: L: = \??\GLOBALROOT\Device\HarddiskVolumeShadowCopy193 If I try to change to the drive I get: >L: The device is not ready. Or if I've left it a while (in case it was a timing issue) eventually it comes out with: File not found. Anyone have any thoughts, ideas or alternatives? Thanks!     - Move 2003 file server to new domain Hi We are in the process of a NT4 to 2003 migration. We are running a NT4 DC on domain X and a 2003 DC on domain Y in mixed mode. All out file servers are already on 2003. All users and groups have been migrated with ADMT from domains X to Y and all workstations have joined the new domain Y. Because of all the SID history being migrated with ADMT, all users on the new domain Y can still access the files and shares on the file servers on old domain X. Now we want to move these 2003 file servers to the new domain Y. How can we do this in way so all file and share permissions will automatically be changed as well? At the moment all shares and files on the servers only list the old domain X users and groups. After moving the server to the new domain Y, we want the new users and groups on domain Y to appear in all the file and share permissions.     - Getting Event ID 333 error messages 60 70 times a minute Hi, I have W2K3 SP2 Standard server running SQL 2000 standard. I was trying to specify a non SA account to run SQL Server Agent jobs but when I entered the username and password of the account I got the following error. An I/O operation initiated by the Registry failed unrecoverably. The Registry could not read in, or write out, or flush, one of the files that contain the system's image of the Registry. The Event ID is 333 On closer examination of the system log I noticed that i was getting this error 60-70 times a minute and had been doing so for several weeks.     - Network Infrastructure Hi Guys, Hope Im in the right group. Im in a stage of fixing my network. This is my current setup. 1. I have an active directory server, which is mydomain.com, wherein also my DNS and DHCP is located. 2. My subnet is 255.255.255.0 This is my idea. 1. Have these servers: (Need suggestions on these) a. AD Server with DNS Server - is this a good practice? b. DHCP Server with ISA Server - is this a good practice? Other concern: I want my network to have access limitations. Here is a scenario. 1. In our network, only managers can use their laptop to access our network and internet. It can be wired or wireless. Unauthorized laptop should or must not access our network. But from the way the network was setup, they can access it through wire. I can filter the wireless using MAC Address filter from the routers. But if they connect through wire and know how to config TCP/IP they can easily access our network. Can this be avoided through ISA? Is there a way to filter MAC Address through Active Directory?     - HP ProLiant Opteron 1210 or Xeon 3040 I'm stuck between buying HP ProLiant ML 115 Opteron 1210 @ 1.8 GHz and HP ProLiant ML 110 G4 Xeon 3040 1.86 GHz. All the rest of the specs are the same. Difference of price is about =A310. But according to HP UK's website Xeon 3040 is discontinued. But my question is which processor is better? I have started MCSE, so I'll be using it for my home lab/server. PS. I've searched through the forum, only bechmark I found was between Xeon 5000 vs Opteron 200 series. The authoritative name server for this domain is somewhere in the Internet. Now I installed a new domain controller on Windows Server 2008 for a new internal domain which I called company.com as well. I guess it wasn't a wise decision because if I type www.company.com on a machine that belongs to the internal domain, the address can't be resolved. It's understandable because the domain controller has the DNS Server installed which knows nothing about the external company.com domain. Is it possible to configure the internal DNS server to properly handle both the internal and external domain names? For example, I want all local DNS queries which can't be resolved locally (like www.company.com) to be forwarded to the external DNS server. Gurus, You know when you install a third-party application which need a domain-level service account to run, and you install the service and then during or after the installation when you tell the service who to log on as, a dialog box pops up and says "XXX service has been given the following rights: ..."     - New network on different site - same or seperate domain? Hi there, Just wondering if anyone could offer any advice on this issue. I am in the process of setting up a new network domain in a new colo data centre. The plan is to setup about 4 new servers and eventually joing them upto our existing win 2003 domain running in another datacentre using a metro ethernet connection between the two. I was thinking of setting up the new solution as a new domain and once it was up and running properly then join it to the other domain. Is this possible? What is the best way to set this up?     - Disabled Domain Controller I have a DC that I thought was dead for good, so I removed it through asdiedit. Later I find out that because of other network issues that I have, I needed to have that server back up, so was able to resurect it. It re-registered itself in DNS and is serving login requests. But, it shows in Active Directory as disabled as well as there are no NTDS settings. Can this be fixed? If I log into that particular DC, it's Sites and Settings have the the NTDS settings, as it has never received replication from the other servers that it is gone. For a Win2K3 based PKI infrastructue, is there a third party add on to
support non IE browsers for enrollment. For Example MAC / Safari ?

Or can the enrollment pages be modifed which i am guessing is not possible
due to the fact they use XEnroll and Active X Controls.
