wireless on ME

Hi, I was having trouble with my USB wireless adapter but just found the
culprit with the help of Trend net tech support. THe wireless program was
showing my network at 100% signal. But would not let me connect to the
internet. They suggested I disable my ZOnealarm and AVG free edition and
sure enough, I was able to open Internet explorer pages and even type this
post. I ENABLED the AVG virus and all good. SO I think the culprit was my
firewall (ZA).... So, I am uncomfortable having my firewall disabled. Can
anyone recommend a free firewall that is user freindly and perhaps would not
interfere with the wireless connection. Maybe I can change settings on my ZA
to accept the wireless connection BUT I dont know how. ANy ideas?? thanks in

If you've been happy with Zone Alarm then there isn't really any reason
why you should not continue to use it, all you need to do is configure it
correctly. Not knowing which version you are using makes it a little
difficult to advise, all the more so since I no longer use ZA, however a
good place to start would be to look at which applications you currently
have that are being blocked by ZA from accessing the internet.

Notwithstanding Mike's recommendation, if you are intent on replacing ZA,
you may want to consider Kerio 2.15, a highly recommended free firewall for
Windows Me with a relatively small footprint.

Recommendation? Where did I make any recommendation other than that if
the poster wishes to retain Zone Alarm that they need to configure it
correctly. Exactly the same proviso will apply if they choose to install
Kerio.

The problem they are experiencing is I believe due to their firewall being
configured incorrectly. Kerio may well play better with Win Me however
since they already have ZA installed I thought that configuring it to suit
their changed connection method would be a sensible first step.

Mediacom cable internet gives customers a free
CA firewall that is Zone Alarm in disguise, and I used
that for over a year before realizing that it was
causing most of the crashes and instability on
my 500 MHz ME system.

I don't know if it was just too bloated and
a resource hog, or if it actually had some
subtle coding incompatibility with WinME.

One day I tried taking it OUT of the startup lineup
and the system got better so I switched to
Tiny Firewall, but it doesn't seem to let me
supervise port activity very well. It "learns"
to reject certain kinds of access, but I don't
see any way to review the status of all of the
permissions and blocks.

Does Tiny firewall have a way to look over the
permissions/blocks?
Does it keep this list in an editable text file or what?

I really LIKE how lean the Tiny Firewall is, if
only I could examine/edit the permission/block list.

I used Tiny Personal Firewall when I had ME. Do you refer to the same
thing? There shouldn't be a problem finding this info. You should have
a tool tray icon to click on.

Hi Mike......and what no one has asked is what version of ZA that the OP
is using. I never went above 5 with WinME. I put a Version 6.xxx on
this XP box and I didn't really like it. Not sure I remember why, but
it was interfering in some way.

So I am back to just using the XP firewall, but if some kind soul (hint)
could help me figure it out, I will put the wireless D-Link back on. As
long as I can get to play Pogo is the proviso, grin.

Just got my million dollar bridge put in yesterday and boy, it feels
both strange and uncomfortable. I guess it will stop feeling like a
"tight girdle" in time, but it sure is nice to be able to chew solid
food once again. In between bouts with the dentist, I broke yet another
tooth on a damned Smartie last Sunday......another $250 to fix that one.

I have now realized that
a) Smarties break your teeth (broke 2 of mine); and
b) Teeth get brittle when one gets over a *certain age*, grin.

I do not see any post by the OP as to what version he is using. But
OTOH, I have not been getting all of the posts on either this server or
my Motzarella one. So if there was one, I missed it.

And the dentist said I could still eat Smarties.....but to be careful.
He said there was no point in denying myself some treats, especially as
they replaced cigarettes when I quit. Sure did want a cig over the past
few months, but not going to.....period.

there is an administrative function.

I've been really perplexed by some of the attempted
communications both inbound and outbound.

Why, for example, does scanregw need
to communicate both ways over the net?

When I first saw that I thought it might have been a virus, but no.

Which versions of ZoneAlarm are preferred under WinME?

The Computer Associates eTrust version that Mediacom
licenses was bogging down and even crashing my 500MHz
WinME machine in ways that were very misleading!

Others on the net have reported a lot of system loading
as a major complaint.

It's probably fine on faster machines or WinXP but
on slower ME systems it fails in insidious ways.

Must have good reason for that, I suppose.

Hi Greegor.....I can't fire up my WinME these days, but I just checked
my Download Folder and I was using the 5.5.094.000 version. And it was
good enough for this XP machine as well.

I just upgraded to a Version 6.xxx one and I didn't like it at all, so
have removed it and just stick with the XP firewall. One of these days
I will figure out my router once again and put it on.

In essence, don't go above the Version 5. And do make sure you remove
any old versions that you have on your computer before installing a new
one. There is an easier way and if you follow this fellow's
instructions, it is quite good.

When it went to 4. it went %&*$#^# for me, as in Windows ME

Use outpost free firewall. It does almost nothing but what it's
supposed to do, which is good. Simple and effective.

I have it on me and xp, just block it from calling home, cause it
wants you to upgrade and thats the only purpose that it calls home.

Better yet, eventually get a router, if you have a faster internet
service.

I have no problem with the XP firewall. I believe it does what it's
supposed to do.

But I disable XP firewall and use 'outpost free' in that place and I
believe it does well.

A router will do what a firewall will do and better.

That's what keeps me thinking that a simple firewall will work very
well with a router.
