" Hello Everyone:
I just wanted to share a solution if you are experiencing an error with
Windows Update (error 0x800A138F) over the past 24 hours since Microsoft
brought more "windows update" capacity online because of the Blaster Worm,
WORM_MSBLAST.xxxx -- which is affecting the NT-based Operating Systems:
(NT 4.0 / 2000 / XP / 2003).
It appears that Microsoft has taken on Akamai for additional bandwidth
and is exclusively using HTTPS (SSL) for the downloading of the update
catalog to your machine(s).
If you experience error #0x800A138F when "Scanning for Updates" and
Windows Update appears to freeze while looking for them... It is most
likely due to your machine being blocked from connecting via SSL to Akamai.
You can confirm this by looking at the file, "Windows Update.log" in
your %windir% (i.e. "c:\winnt\") folder.
If it contains a line like the following, this must be your problem:
2003-08-16 19:43:04 23:43:04 Error IUENGINE Querying software
update catalog from
https://a248.e.akamai.net/v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/getmanifest.asp
(Error 0x800C0005)
Try pasting the previous URL into the browser of the machine on which
you are having trouble with Windows Update. If you get an XML response
of any kind such as following:
<catalog>
<provider />
</catalog>
Then you are probably experiencing a different problem, BUT if you
CANNOT connect to this URL, check to see if you have any third party
firewall products either on your machine and/or your gateways/proxies
(such as ISA Server) on whether or not you have access to SSL/HTTPS
(port 443) for outbound connections.

I hope this was of assistance to you, please let me know if you have further
questions or just drop a line and let me know how you made out!
