my sister 'inherited' a computer from her ex.
Two problems exist on startup.
One is BEFORE windows starts -- it asks what version
windows to use (comp has only windows me -- I suspect
there once were two diff OS configurations)
Second issue: when windows starts, she is asked to login
{userid is pre-filled - ex's name, and there is no pw, so
all she does is click enter)
I would like to fix the system so that it automatically
loads windows me, and bypasses the logon.
Been searching the knowledge base and the gateway site to
no avail.
Can anyone here help me?
TIA

Hello, lisa:

First of all, regrets if the Windows messages are mispelled, I only know =
the Spanish version.

You must know what startup program offers you the operating system =
select menu: There are many programs in the market that installs a "boot =
loader" to select the OS.
You can try to boot from an emergency disk (if you don't have one go to =
Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, Boot Disk) and run the following =
command:
FDISK /MBR

For the second problem, if the PC is not in a network, go to Control =
Panel, Network. In the Main Logon drop-down list, select "Windows =
logon".

Regards.

Unfortunately, I don't. Was hoping that there would be=20
some sort of "ini" file I could look at to see where any=20
OS "boot loader" might be, and I could remove it from=20
execution.

Yes, but I am trying to 'fix' the annoyances for my=20
sister, who is not computer literate. She just wants the=20
dang thing to come on with Windows ME ready to go.

I tried that... Unfortunately it STILL asks me to logon.=20
What I am trying to do is DISABLE the logon screen.

Thank you VERY much for your reply. Guess it was not the=20
simple problem I had hoped it was.

Hello, lisa:

I'm not an expert, so I can't give you more instructions for the boot =
loader because any mistake or failure will make the system unable to =
boot... sorry.

With respect to the Windows logon box:
I suppose the PC is not conected to any Local Area Network.
Go to Control Panel, Network. If "Windows family logon" is not present, =
install it: Press "Add...", select "client" and press "Add...". Select =
"Microsoft" in the left pane and "Windows family logon" on the rigth =
pane. Press OK.
Back to the network control panel, select "Client for Microsoft Network" =
and click "Remove". If there is any other client (except "Windows Family =
logon"), remove it.
Exit the network control panel. Windows will say you have to reboot... =
do it.

Now you should not see the logon box.

Regards.
