Last couple of days I've been getting "Windows protection error. You
need to restart your computer. System halted." This is usually only on
a cold boot, but occasionally on a restart. When powered off then
restarted it boots to windows fine. If "Enable startup menu" is
checked in msconfig/advanced and left to start on "Normal", it also
boots fine. I can't find anything in the MS KB or online that deals
with this exact situation. Any guidance in troubleshooting this would
be most appreciated. I also occasionally get a freeze when double
clicking My Computer on the desktop, yet if I right click then "open"
it is fine. Can this be related?

This sounds as if it could be a hardware problem - most likely a loose
connection inside the case. If you're not happy messing around inside, then
take it to a shop for investigation.
If your reasonably careful, you should be able to remove the cover, and
check that all connections are properly seated (remember to ground yourself,
and turn off the machine at the mains socket first!!).

See if that helps.

Many thanks for the timely response and the guidance. I have a bit of
experience with various upgrades so I'm aware of the precautions
needed. For some reason I had a "software" mind set on this. Glad to
be pointed in the right direction.

Noel,
Many thanks for the assistance. I checked and reset all the internal
connections including RAM, CPU, power, cards, ribbons, etc. I still
get the error on boot up unless "enable startup menu" is checked in
msconfig/general/advanced. Opening "my computer" will still freeze the
system but I can open it by right clicking the desktop icon then left
clicking "open". If you have any more suggestions I'd be more than
willing to try them. At least the machine still runs fine if handled
correctly and I don't overtax the processor.
Again, many thanks.

OK - it does sound as if it may be software-related, then.......
What happens on a boot to Safe Mode???
What if you try a SCANREG /FIX from the command prompt??
Can you monitor the processor temperature in any way (try Everest Home
Edition - www.lavalys.com)??

Just for the heck of it I unchecked "enable startup menu" from
msconfig/general/advanced before I did anything else. Lo and behold,
the problem disappeared and it now boots up fine. I had opened the
case and checked all the connections and that did not solve the
problem.
Too bad it "healed" itself, as I was rationalizing the need to buy a
new, faster system. A 300 Celeron with 256 megs of RAM is a bit
sluggish even with broadband.
Many thanks for your guidance through this.

If unchecking Startup menu cured the problem on its own, the it was a VERY
strange problem, as all that does is change one Byte in one file - which
almost certainly is not enough to cure/cause the problem.
try re-checking the entry - does the problem recur?

Actually, when checking the box fixed the problem originally and un
checking made it reoccur, I left it checked for a while and unchecked
it again yesterday as a test. That is when I discovered the problem
had vanished. Checked or unchecked, the machine boots up without the
error now. Several repeated cold boots and restarts, both checked and
unchecked, confirmed this.
I'm just happy it works.

For sure! I just don't question the occasional bit of serendipity.
Mostly, we just get bitten on the ass and never figure out why.
Sometimes, for no fathomable reason, the process reverses itself.
Maybe I was due.
Again, Noel, thanks for all your assistance.
