This is usually quite normal. I quote from the Windows Support Centre:

"Windows will always try to find some use for all of RAM - even a trivial
one. If nothing else it will retain code of programs in RAM after they exit,
in case they are needed again. Anything left over will be used to cache
further files - just in case they are needed. But these uses will be dropped
instantly should some other use come along. Thus there should rarely be any
significant amount of RAM 'free'. That term is a misnomer - it ought to be
'RAM for which Windows can currently find no possible use'. The adage is:
'Free RAM is wasted RAM'. Programs that purport to 'manage' or 'free up' RAM
are pandering to a delusion that only such 'Free' RAM is available for fresh
uses. That is not true, and these programs often result in reduced
performance and may result in run-away growth of the page file."

As well as the reply from Crazy Aizy if you have on-board video some of
your installed ram will be diverted for that.

Adding to Crazy Aizy and Joan Archer, install the free Belarc Advisor, 6.1f,
http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html

and let it examine your machine for memory, ... and many other things of
interest.

P.S. I suspect your memory module is 256 MB, not 264 ... which explains
where some of it has gone <vbg>.

Indeed Jack, and perhaps 256 less 3 (say) for onboard video = 253 (235?)
could also be a clue.

I just checked mine and by r-clicking my computer and looking at the

Joan,

It would appear that you probably have a graphics chip built into the
motherboard and that this is using 32MB of RAM.

I do Mike, I was just checking after the numbers that Jack had mentioned

When you start a computer the very first program that
comes on is WINDOWS!
Yupper! Its good ole Windows loading into your RAM memory!
You may wanna try Rambooster software and set RamBooster
to LOW settings, as Hi settings will often crash the
computer or slow down the computer, I would set RAMBOOSTER
to clear about 15 to 20 MB if I had 264 MB of RAM memory.
I am a computer repairman.

Yet again, you show total ignorance of the operating system!
For a 'computer repairman' your advice is such that I fear for your
livelihood - and your customers' PS's!

RamBooster is almost guaranteed to break Windows causing unpredictable
errors galore - and should NEVER be installed in WinME,

Noel, it makes a change from the exhortation to *Re-install Windows!*. This
