I get an error message about cannot find vxdmgr32.exe -
anyone know what this is and if I should be alarmed. My
PC still runs.

I don't think you want to look too hard for vxdmgr32.exe as it was almost
certainly a worm of some sort and not part of Win Me.. Many worms use that
name with one example being W32.Bamboo. For more details see
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.bambo.html . What
did you preferred anti virus application have to report when you last scanned
your system?

I suspect that what may have happened is that your AV application has removed
the file but left the entry launching it still in the registry. Use MSConfig
and look for and uncheck any entry on the Startup tab that refers to
vxdmgr32.exe.

Out of interest did you find an entry in MSConfig | Startup that referred to
vdmgr32.exe? If so, can you remember what it was labelled as? By that I mean
the name in the left hand column on the Startup tab.

Knowing this would could help me when answering a similar question to yours in
the future.

Cheers,
