    - No EBD, travelling, corrupt registry I am out of town, don't have my emergency boot disk, and my laptop picked up a problem that has corrupted the registry. It tries to start up in safe mode but cannot complete the start. I need a EBD but mine's at home and I won't be there for another month. I really am not sure what that particular executable does but I need to find a clean copy of the file and delete the currently infected one. Where can I go to get a copy of the file? "Competition in after-market and replacement parts, such as remote garage door controls, helps create lower prices and better products," said Kenneth DeGraff, a researcher for Consumers Union. "Allowing one company to control those markets and the prices they charge hurts consumers." The Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) was passed in 1998 to stop mass copyright infringement on the Internet, but some companies have gone beyond this purpose and invoked its controversial "anti-circumvention" clause to stave off the competition. The Samuelson Law, Technology & Public Policy Clinic at Boalt Hall School of Law, UC Berkeley, and the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) co-authored the Consumers Union brief to help stand up for consumer rights and the right to create new after-market technologies capable of interoperating with legitimately purchased products. Jennifer M. Urban, the lead attorney on the case at the Samuelson Clinic, said, "The court recognized that copyright law grants rights to consumers as well as copyright holders and held that the DMCA did not wipe those rights away." "Chamberlain's lawsuit sought to stifle competition by misusing the DMCA," said Deirdre K. Mulligan, Director of the Samuelson Clinic. "Congress warned of such abuses, and we're pleased that the court rejected this view to avoid harming consumers." "When consumers buy a garage door opener, they have the right to use whatever remote they want with it, even one from another company," said Jason Schultz, EFF Staff Attorney and a co-author of the brief. "In Chamberlain's view, it's their remote or no remote. Thanks to this decision, they've now been shown that the law views it differently." Skylink won decisions in the lower court and at the International Trade Commission, but Chamberlain appealed, claiming that Skylink's remote control device circumvents access controls to a computer program in its garage door opener. In its decision, the Court of Appeals rejected Chamberlain's claims, further noting that if the court adopted Chamberlain's interpretation of the DMCA, it would threaten many legitimate uses of software within electronic and computer products - something the law aims to protect. "[Chamberlain's interpretation] would...allow any copyright owner, through a combination of contractual terms and technological measures, to repeal the fair use doctrine with respect to an individual copyrighted work - or even selected copies of that copyrighted work," wrote the court.     - Customize This Folder Where do you go in Windows Me (and/or the registry) to verify that your Customized Folder options are correct? Every once in a while, all my customized folders get reset to default, and I lose all my little notes, picture previews, web templates, etc. Generally, this happens if I delete the wrong entry that Spybot or Ad-aware finds -- but I do not know which entry (or entries) pertain to the customized folders in Windows Explorer. If someone can tell me this, I can flag those so that Spybot and Ad-aware ignore them in future scans. Internet Explorer is linked to Windows Explorer in certain things. I have noticed that when I am online with my browser open at the same time I am customizing a folder (or editing the message on an existing customization) in Windows Explorer that my browser refreshes as Windows Explorer refreshes. So the registry entries for customized folders might be under Windows Explorer, Explorer, or Internet Explorer in the registry, or a combination of all three. I don't know. Here is a related problem that happened yesterday. In addition to the folder customizations being lost, and all my little folder messages being lost, all the icons on the right side of the Windows Explorer window were flush up against the window, instead of about an inch and a half to the right. There was no place for thumbnail previews to display. No place for custom messages to display. And on my D Drive root directory, the little pie chart that shows how much space is used and free was missing. It showed up for C, but not for D. It would not let me customize folders at all. The menu option to customize this folder was not even available for the C drive root directory. It was on the menu for the other folders on C, and on D, but it did not work. The only way I could fix this problem was to do two system restores. All my customizations are back, and the folder icons display properly again, including the one for my D drive. The pie chart is back as it should be. If this happens again, I'd like to know where to go into the registry to fix it. Also, please tell me which Internet Explorer, Explorer, and Windows Explorer entries should not be deleted by Spybot and Ad-aware, so that (1) my folder customizations and notes remain intact, and (2) the icons display properly on the right side of the window, and I don't lose the root directory pie charts or the ability to customize folders.     - laptop won't shut down after cellphone internet connection I just installed software and drivers so I can connect to the internet using my Moterola 720 mobile phone. Everything works flawlessly until I dissconnect from the web and try to shut down the computer. When I click "shut down computer" it starts to shut down, the screen goes blank and then the computer locks up. Control-alt-delete has no effect and all I can do is cut the power.     - can I protect the system time? I have begun using the timeclock function in one of my software programs for my employees to clock in and out. My concern is that they can click on the time in the windows tool bar, change the clock, clock in or out, and then change the time back and I would have no way of knowing it or proving it.     - Internet Explorer 6 ffailure When I try to install IE6 I get a simialr message to this: A previous installation has pending work requiring a reboot. You need to restart your computer to complete that installation before running internet explorer setup. Setup will now close." I have done an over the top re-intall of Me and have been told that I have to uninstall components of IE6 that were left behind. One article in the KB said to go to msconfig and uncheck all but Load Static Vxds and re-run the installation. Ok, so now I am in safe mode and get the same notice. In the meantime all my icons take up new places on the desktop and have to be retrained. Also had to go in and uncheck a bunch of stuff in the startup menu that gobbled up my resources. Also in the KB found an article about messing with the registry with a warning. Not for me unless I have an expert looking over my shoulder.     - Unable to boot up Please help. I own the computer from hell! Several days ago I attempted to add new software, and now I can only start my computer in safe mode. I tried to uninstall the new software, but it doesn't show up in the add/remove programs window. The computer refuses to do a system restore. I checked the registry, there are supposedly no errors, but it will not reload from the registry. I have scanned for viruses and found none. Tech support at Staples (where I purchased the computer and an extended warranty on it) tells me that my registry is corrupted and to do a factory restore using the CD that came with the computer. I will lose everything on my hard drive if I do so, and Staples will charge me a fortune to extract things from it. They claim I invalidated the warranty when I installed additional memory purchased from their store! I would like to transfer the contents of some folders to a CD, but although my computer will read from a disk, it will not write to it. It spins it's wheels, so to speak, and acts as if it is doing so, but nothing actually is burnt onto the disk. Does anyone know if my computer will recognize and transfer to a memory card while in safe mode? I don't want to go out and spend $50 for a memory card, and then find out it won't work.     - OE6 and Blocked Attachments I have received this from one of our Senior Club Members, can anyone assist please? Hi Joe A problem with recently installed Outlook Express 6. I find " jpg " attachments being blocked as being a potential virus. Why jpg I don't know as I thought these to be relatively safe. The attachment bar is removed from the e-mail and a yellow bar appears on the top with the message " OE removed access to the following attachment in your mail ........... ....... jpg " This can be bypassed by going to Tools - Options - Security, and remove the check from "Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened that could be a potential virus " Possibly as a temporary measure. I also found that if Forward is selected for an e-mail with a blocked attachment the attachment can be opened.( Apparently OK to forward a potential virus ) Looking for a permanent solution to remove jpg files from the list I found Microsoft Knowledge Base Article 291387. a section of this dealing with unsafe file lists is attached, a jpg, hope you can open it.     - Windows ME blue screen shutdown error Hi, I'm having problems shutting down windows... every time i do I get a blue screen with the following error message: An exception 0D has occurred at 0028:00000003 in VxD ---. This was called from 0028:C002F285 in VxD ---. It may be possible to continue normally. Then the usual options. If I try to continue, a black screen with flashing cursor appears and the PC won't shut down. This is a new problem, and didn't happen prior to around a week ago. I have tried to copy the file from A: prompt, but it will not change drives. It shows c> but if you type anything in it comes back with the same error the file: (whatever you have typed) is corrupt or missing and it wants to know where to find the windows loader for this file. I have tried typing a: and enter, A:> and enter, SCANDISK and enter, and just about anything else you can think of but it does not go away from the c>. I have the boot and setup disks but The error comes up before the computer starts the disk. I keep switching between my computers, going online to try to get ideas and then going back to the broken one but even though this seems to be a common problem I can't anything that works.     - EZ Armor & Update of EZ Trust...... Forgot to tell you......there is a new build of EZ Trust Antivirus......6.3.0.9 is the version number. I was talking to CA and they forgot to send out a notification to their users.....which did not impress me. And I asked a few more questions about EZ Armor because I finally found a way to download the free Microsoft version. There were some glitches before because I was a paying customer of the AV program. Earlier, I could not have d/l'ed it. The bit where one clicks as a *present customer* would not work, so I got it somehow from their website. They told me that they have fixed up their abominably slow website and yes...I checked it out and they have. ****They told me that the free firewall is *Zone Alarm PRO 4.5* (not a 3.xxx one) that is included in the freebie......and once this AV is up for renewal in 10 days, I will switch to that.**** I have to say that dealing with their tech support is a pleasure.....they are always nice and do get back to you.     - Autodown Error in KRNL386.EXE Got a really strange error...... "Autodown caused an error in KRNL386.EXE and will close my browser"......everything froze. There were lost file fragments, which happens, on reboot. A strange thing I have noticed in the past few weeks is for instance, when I use Google on my home page, the Search box at the top of IE indents as if I clicked on it......and when I rebooted tonight, a Zone Alarm box appeared briefly in my bottom bar. Almost like watching a *player piano* doing these things on their own.....can't explain it any better at 1 am. Bear in mind that my ISP has joined up with Yahoo and it is a real mishmash at the moment. I have been back and forth with them due to my old bugbear about the Yahoo Toolbar mucking up WinME. Apparently they are also having problems with WinME and Parental Controls. This tech knows what she is talking about and she advised against downloading their software.....which I wouldn't have done anyway. The toolbar is in there, I assume. They have been touting this "self-healing software" for a while now.....I don't want it near this computer, grin!! I will *heal myself*.     - scandisk & defrag Hi all, How many of you ran scan disk, then defrag on your comp. After the defrag is done, you reboot to find non-system disk error? Running scan disk with a boot floppy, comes up with tons of errors. Using a USB cradle, I was able to access the drive and backup the important data. Unfortunately, I don`t have an official ME install CD, just the recovery CD`s, so I couldn`t do a repair. Seems the MBR and few other things got screwed up.     - MacFee - how can you completely remove? I have a friend who bought a Compaq (Windows ME)with MacAfee Virus program installed - she has recently purchase a Norton Professional and when we went to install it, we first tried to uninstall MacFee and the uninstall failed - several times. We tried to install Norton and it hangs up = you can force it to run a virus scan etc., but it is not functioning properly and I am thinking it may be bumping into fragments of McAfee here and there. Any thoughts on how I can get MacFee completely off and/or why Norton does not install properly. Also, would installing XP possibly help with this scenario?     - Overlarge Restore Archive Directory There is a problem with my System Restore. Since I reinstalled Windows ME on 08/04/03, I can only get a restore by using <Start-Run-msconfig-Launch System Restore>, which is tolerable. What is not tolerable is <C:\restore\archive> is filling up with 11 Mb cabinet files. The archive is now 3.65 Gb and growing every day. I have set System Restore Disk Space Use under File System Properties at 1032 Mb. This setting has no effect. I cannot delete any of the cabinet files. I get a message that says "Cannot delete RGxxxxxxxxx. Access Denied. Source File May Be in Use."     - Toolbar etc. Hi, My MS office toolbar seems to hang everytime I turn my computer on and then my time/date seem to vanish. When I try to shutdown, it seems to think something there is still some task unfinished and I have to manually shutdown the power. (I've also noticed the IE 5.5 properties keep changing).     - Folders won't open About 5 days ago, my folders quit opening. I can open "documents" from the desktop, but then double clicking or right clicking and selecting "open" only produces the "open with..." dialog box. Just scanned with yesterday's norton update, am virus free, with the recent removal of "istinstall_s-.exe" trojan. Problem still occurs when I boot computer in safe mode, hence, nothing running to conflict. Fortunately the I can "explore" folders. Also, "view" menu has changed in a folder window. Help! Am having trouble with something called utildvd.exe!
Whatever it is, it interferes with the loading of the
desktop when booting up; all I get is a blue screen and
blinking hourglass. Control-Alt-Delete and
ending "utildvd" completes the boot-up, but this is new.
Recently have installed Adaware, Spybot and ZoneAlarm.
What the heck is utildvd? Have located it at
C:\Windows\System\MUI\0405. Totally at sea here. Any help
