Your problem here is quite possibly the fact that you have everything in one
folder - OE is not good at that sort of management, and slows down
noticeably if there's more than 100 MB in any mail folder (or .dbx file) -
it has to load the complete file into RAM/VM before anything appears on
screen.
Simply sort the emails into subfolders, or archive the older stuff to
another folder.
BTW, it's NOT a good idea to leave stuff in any of the default folders -
these tend to be the first to get corrupted if there's any problems with OE.
At the end of each session, clear out the default Inbox and Sent Items
folders to folder that you've created yourself - even if they're only
'holding folders', they'll be less bug-prone.
