Hi. I was wondering if anyone would know the answer for
the question: Can I "upgrade" my windows me to windows 98?
I know that the question sounds weird. What I am planning
to do is to reformat my hard-disk and, instead of Windows
ME, install Windows 98. Is that possible? Will I have any
hardware problems?
I strongly believe that Windows 98 is a much better and
stable operational system. That's the reason I want to
change from ME to 98. Also because I already own an
Windows 98 udgrade CD I bought for my other PC.
Thanks for any imput.

Windows ME is an upgrade to 98.......won't work the other way around. I
believe you would need a proper Win98 CD......not an upgrade one. That
would have been (I suppose) so you could upgrade from Win95.

Win 95, then 98, then ME, then NT, then XP......if memory serves me
right.

Apart from the licensing problems - you're only legally entitled to have one
copy of Win 98 installed for each you bought - you will not be able to
install an upgrade Win 98 onto a reformatted drive - and certainly not on
top of Win ME - you would need a full install disk.

Thanks so much for the inputs. I really appreciated.
So if I buy a full install Windows 98 disk it will work
out? Or you think I have to go to XP since I already have
ME installed?
Thank you.

Hello;
Hmmmm.....very interesting. I would be inclined to spend
the effort on discovering why Windows ME is not as stable
in YOUR machine as Windows 98SE. Have you tried posting
the nature of your instability problems within these
Newsgroups? Good luck.

I don't agree, I used 98SE one year and had more problem with it than
with ME which I use since 2 years - I usually hear also by others that
ME is more stable.
When you have troubles with ME you always can use restoration system
which doesn't exist in 98SE.
You always can reinstall ME on itself (which I already did with
success).
I don't advise you to downgrade - and certainly to format your HD
which is nearly never a good idea (but of course, to downgrade you
would have to do it).
If really you want to change your system, better to upgrade to WinXP.

Not if he has an older (than Win98) version which qualifies him for the
upgrade. Then he can indeed reformat and use the Win98 upgrade disc to do a
clean install. I did this with both Win98 and Win98SE upgrades.

Reformat, start a clean install with the Win98 upgrade disc, and part way
into the installation it will ask for the older version disc to be inserted
briefly to prove that the user is entitled to the upgrade. Then it will
continue with the installation. I used a Win95 OEM disc as proof for the
Win98 upgrade, and the Win98 upgrade disc for the Win98SE upgrade.

You're still only legally allowed to install each OS once - INCLUDING any
precursor OS - so you must have a complete audit trail for each PC, with no
overlap.

Sure. That isn't what I was disputing. I was merely pointing out that your
statement that he "will not be able to install an upgrade Win 98 onto a
reformatted drive" is not exactly correct.

In my case that computer came with Win95 installed, and with the OEM disc. I
bought the Win98 upgrade and did a clean install as described, then later
bought the Win98SE upgrade and did another clean install. In each case I did
reformat the HD and did the clean install from the upgrade disc, using the
previous disc when the installation requested it to prove I was entitled to
the upgrade. Perfectly legal.

This is true - but the implication from the OP was that he was in possession
of only the original ME software - and a Win 98 update disk. The Win Update
disk would not be usable in such circumstances, without he further purchase
of a 'qualifying' OS CD/floppy set.
