    - Best Backup Utility Please ? About a year ago, I spent a great deal of time researching the internet and reading many reviews, to select a good, reliable , backup utility. After much effort and reading, I selected Genie Backup Program. Although it has the features that I love and has a pretty intuitive interface, I find it to be unreliable and flakey. My OS is Windows ME. The main features that I want are : 1. Can write to CD. 2. Can automate on a pre-set schedule. 3. Stable, and reliable. 4. Practical and intuitive interface. 5. Easy backup restore process and interface. 6. Easy selection of folders and items for backup. ------------------------------------------------- Compression or encryption are not needed. Also, I never need more backups that what will fit on one CD. I guess my needs boil down to reliability and intuitive interface, as well as automation if possible in the same package. When I started out looking for an acceptable product a year ago, I thought that it would be simple to find a very good product for my limited backup needs. I don't feel the same way now, after reading glowing reviews about Genie Backup Program and then using it for a year. I hope this is posted in the right groups.     - error message I have Windows ME installed on my HP 6745C computer. It has a 20GB hard drive. I have only used 4.8 GB and have 14.1 free. I receive the following message after I have logged onto AOL and after I read 1 message or go to another web site: X We're Sorry Your computer is running very low on available resources to complete this request. Please close some of the other open applications or restart your computer before proceeding. The thing is................I don't have anything else open. Once this error message occur's I cannot do anything than re boot my compouter and start over. But then it appears again............it is constant and I cannot use the computer for anything other than one message or web site visit before it freezes up with this message.     - Windows Media player My WMP (the one that came with WINME) got corrupted and stopped functioning. I removed the folder WMP, downloaded WMP 9 and installed the program. However, it is not functioning either (the program opens and then freezes the computer to the point that I have to CTRL+ALT+DEL twice and restart). Is it possible to reinstall the WMP that came with WINME (I still have the CD)? If so, how? How do I uninstall WMP 9.     - C:\OLDREST\TEMP When I run mcafee it hits a hidden system file called c:\oldrest\temp. This file is almost 4 gigs and contains over 65,000 files with the file extension of .cpy, the earliest file creation date is 1997,which is older than my PC bought new in 2000 and the last entry is 2003. Mcafee spends the better part of an hour checking this file. My question is does anyone know what this is and what its for, can I delete it or shoould I just have mcafee exclude it? It boots in selective startup even after you go into "MSCONFIG" and try to change it, also all items are checked in the startup menu. #2.     - dat file icon changed - how to change back All the DAT files have a Nero Multimedia icon against them. How do I change the icon back? Listing all the options under 'open with' does not give me the original DAT icon. In fact it warns me not to change it! Using Tweak UI, icons restore, does not cure the problem. It seems to have happened after I installed Nero 6 and did some critical updates from MS. AVG, XoftSpy, NoAdware, Spybot and CWShredder do not find anything. Any help would be appreciated.     - RUNDLL Error Recently, I deleted some keys in the Windows Registry to remove all obnoxious Adware files on my Windows ME operating system. Shortly after, I started constantly receiving a RUNDLL window popping up with the message "Error loading winup.dll The system cannot find the file specified. I had made a back up copy of the Windows Registry before deleting the Adware keys. I tried reverting back to that back-up to solve the RUNDLL error messages, but to no avail.     - 'ME" hangs when trying to shut down I have Windows ME. When I try to shut down it just hangs. When I hit cntl/alt/del it says that CCAP is not responding. I have to manually shut off the computer then reboot. It then will check the hard disk for errors and run ok. How can I get my computer to shut down normally?     - Can not delete Windows ME log on password I have gone through all of MS's Knowledge Base on how to prevent the Win ME Logon Prompt at startup per article 152104. At step 6 when I click OK at the end, I get an additional window that says WINDOWS NETWORKING, "You must specify a password". Thus I can not get away from having to use a Windows logon.     - Can't seem to see anything I am having a problem where after boot-up normally I am unable to view the contents of any folders. I have run stinger to check for viruses, search and destroy spybot, adaware looking for viruses/trojans and the like. It hasn't found anything. When I try to use the system restore, it tries to open a page, but remains blank. I have tried using scanreg /fix, and it does it's thing, and restarts the laptop, but same problem when it boots up normally.     - Internet connection problems Hi, I can connect to my ISP and update my virus guard files from the Mcafee tray icon, but when I try to check my e mail I get a message saying unknown host. When I try to surf the web I get "Page cannot be displayed." If I ping www.google.com, from a dos prompt, I just get timed out but if I ping myself 127.0.0.1 it gives four responses as you would expect. I have uninstalled internet explorer and then reinstalled it and upgraded it to ver 6.0 but still exactly the same. I did a Windows ME reinstall over my existing setup but no difference. It all started after someone inserted a disc to setup BT Connect as the ISP, unfortunately it was a very old disc and didn't work, just locked up the system.     - Something terribly wrong It seems when I click on any of my folders it's all blank. Nothing shows up. When I try to run HJT or my virus scan that too is blank and nothing shows up (no text, images nothing). I've went into safe mode and from there I can see all my stuff.     - Boot Problem Hi; Thanks in advane for listening. I am having problems booting from my hard disk. I can boot from an old version (win98) startup disk, but never made a WinME startup disk. can the system files be downloaded from the internet or can they be extracted from my winME CD? How do I go about this. I can't get the setup to complete because of a long filename conflict. When scandisk ends it says to run the windows version, which of course I can't do. I would prefer not to reformat my c drive if possible. At the moment I'm working on a separate laptop with Win98 installed.
