Now I am wondering if there is an option on the CD not to install the AV and
firewall. Let me know how you fare with the update.......and I will put in
my order.

You are such a ditz, Loon. (VBG) I just clicked on the link and went
straight to the page.......try it again. But on the other hand, maybe Gates
doesn't want Texas to get it. Bwa ha ha.

And I just checked my 'Order Confirmation' and it says there are 2 CD's, so
I would be willing to bet you $50 Cdn. that the antivirus and firewall are
on the second one.

AND.....IIRC, it is very likely that it is EZ Trust and its version of Zone
Alarm firewall (3.xxx)......in fact I will bet a further $50 on that!!

There you have it, my sceptical Merkin friend......grin. Willing to bet??

XX Figgs

OH.....and the UK can now order it too, according to a post I saw from PA
Bear in Google Groups.

Re: Is this for real??? CAUTION by Mike

Mike

To those interested:

Only run the Security CD on Win Me if you want to:
a) Flush the system restore archive with the loss of all checkpoints,
b) Install IE6 SP1
c) Install WMP9.

When using the CD on Win Me, unlike on XP, the user has NO control whatsoever
over what is installed or not.

Note also that the security CD will NOT apply any security patches to the
Microsoft JavaVM. Users will still have to do this for themselves by visiting
the Windows Update site.

Thanks Mike!!! I have no need to flush my Restore archive, I have IE6 SP1

will mess with it.

I'm skeptical, but for different reasons: (1) This is a great way for
Microsoft to build a mailing/email list. (2) Also, could MS take this info
about my operating system, match it against their product registration
database, and see if my OS copy is legal -- or not. I'm not saying the above
motives, if true, are bad. But I suspect Microsoft has something to gain
here, as well. (BTW, I'm 100 percent legal and a Microsoft fan. No vicious
cards and letters, please.) Joe Starin

It appears that PABear read my post elsewhere announcing that the UK had now
been added. :-) The UK were originally missing from the drop down list of

Joe,

The only thing that Microsoft has to gain is good publicity for what is a long
overdue product, not that I personally like the implementation of the update
when used on Win Me. IMO any praise will quickly evaporate when Win 98SE and
Win Me users find that WMP9 is installed on their systems regardless of any
user preference (Win 98 gets WMP7.1). Not that I feel Microsoft are really
interested in the views of those still running or even supporting Win 9x
systems.

Microsoft have no mechanism to check whether your operating system is legal or
not when using the CD. One of the reasons for the CD, other than of course to
make the updates available to those with slow connections, is that installing
the updates requires no connection to any Microsoft site and can be used on a
stand alone CD.

Joe.....maybe I am missing a brain cell or two......but can't MS check all
of the things you are talking about every time you use Windows Update??

The reason I know (besides good 'blonde' common sense, grin) is that I have
a cousin who has a pirated XP Pro O/S on her computer and the person who put
it on there told her to NEVER go to Windows Update......and she asked me
why. Duh!!

I have asked her nicely to please spend some money and put a legal Home
version on. What good is it if she can't patch holes and stuff.

In my opinion, she is shooting herself in the foot. But she is such a ditz
about computers that I don't think she understood my reasoning. C'est la
vie.

Cheers....Heather

Yipes!! Ditto for me.......thanks for the warning, Mike. I don't want WMP
9 in particular.....not to mention flushing my restore points. What in heck
are they giving this away for anyway??? Or perhaps, more to the
point.......why don't they tell the general public this??

Disappointed in Ontario.....

Hi, Mike. Yes, I agree it's a decent PR move, given the many shots that
Microsoft takes. It's also a nice way for MS to get a bunch of their updated
software on people's machines sorta disguised as security fixes. No harm
done, I guess. Both sides win. I already have most everything on those CDs
installed on my ME machine so I'll pass. BTW, can people opt-out from
receiving email messages after they give MS their email address? Joe Starin

I'm sorry I wouldn't know. I don't think I've ever been spammed by Microsoft
only ever receiving e-mails that I've signed up for such as Technet Flash,
MSDN and the Security Bulletins. That is of course other than for private
e-mails and messages relating to beta programs for which I am enrolled.

Mike, et al,

I accidently clicked on one of the un-subscribe links in one of the MS
e-mails and I received a confirmation of cancellation e-mail within minutes.

That doesn't really surprise me Marty. I think that in this respect at least
Microsoft play with a straight bat (from which you can see I come from a
nation that plays cricket) as to do otherwise would rightly lead to even more
adverse criticism being piled on them.

Mike.......I have opted out of different Microsoft newsletters at times and
also subscribed to a few. There is absolutely no problems at all in doing
so. I get the same ones that you do and am surprised that anyone would even
question this.

I will see what information I get with this new CD......I trust it will be
fully explanatory.

Figgs
Yes, a visit to Windows Update will reveal that the system is a hacked
version - but NO information is sent to MS, other than the fact that the
system is XP.
Some of the patches are designed to reject Windows updates unless a
properly authorised.version is found - at no time is MS involved/informed in
this process.

There is a lot of internal wrangling going on about whether this protection
should be removed from security patches, so that illegal machines don't
screw the pooch for legal ones......

Remember, the anti-virus and firewall software are listed as 'trial'
copies, so I would guess that they hope a % of respondents will order
the 'full' versions, which, of course, they will have to pay for. If
MS gets the usual mail order % of 3% responding, they may do OK,
depending on total volume.

Re: Microsoft Windows Security Update CD now available by Heather

Heather

Glad to see you back......missed you (G).

Are you saying that she could update her XP?? I was at her place about 3
'reformats' ago, and not knowing that it was a buccaneer version, went to
Windows Update and got some foreign language......like middle European.
That is when I realized what she had on there.......not to mention it is XP
Pro, which she doesn't need. But at this point, she panicked and told me to
leave WU alone.

One of these days I am going to write a book about ditzy people I know (and
am related to, grin) who for instance, put CD's in upside down and can't
figure out why a program won't load. Or use a Win95 computer for 7 years
and and swear they have never had IE or OE on their computer. There was a
dead silence when I convinced him to double click on the funny looking
desktop icon....ROFL!! (my brother-in-law) I must have a million
stories......grin.

Frightening, isn't it.......I am considered the 'guru' with these less than
computer-literate relatives. Said B-I-L now has XP and I have refused to
help him at all!! Told him to RTFM. He still tries to wangle info out of
me.

I would help, if he would listen........but he won't. If I try to explain
something simple, he yells at me and says I am confusing him.......grrrrr!!
He tries to pretend he knows all about computers......so when I take it to
the next level, of course I confuse him.

And that is my 'tale of woe' for the day......grin. Lovely day here
actually......first one above zero in a long time.

Cheers......Figgs

heirloom

Free ain't always a good price if it is for something you don't
want.......i.e., I've got some real good Cuban cigars that fell out of the
back of my dog, you can have those for free <g>.
Heirloom, old and leaving well enough alone
