    - Can't use printers/USB ports and error message on startup I've just had to use the emergency rebooting disk on my Windows Me laptop as it was continually crashing. After reinstalling everything, this message comes up at every startup, if I click OK, then the whole screen goes blank and if I ignore it then all functions normally. Explorer has caused an error in ~9153535259.TMP. Explorer will now close. EXCEPT, I found that I can no longer connect printers, digital cameras or any other similar non-plug and play devices. Trying to set them up produces this message: Windows needs the disk labeled 'Windows Millenium Edition' to continue. I don't have this disk and have never had it.     - WildTangent I had to install Wildtangent webdriver for a game I had. I have since uninstalled the game and the Wildtangent webdriver but on startup or restart I get this error: C\PROGRAM~1\WILDTA~1\\APPS\CDA\CDAENG~1.DLL It says that it cannot find this file. The only way to fix it is to reinstall Wildtangent which I understand is spyware. All this has happened since I ran SpyBot and it uninstalled Wildtangent.     - No Windows - Noel I couldn't reply to the response you gave me on my first post. Nothing shows up on the Safe Mode other than those two files from McAfee. I'm using Microsoft ME and I've installed a 3rd party DVD using the USB connection and a D- Link Wi-Fi card (which was all working until...I tried to remove the kazaa icon in the tray). System crashed and only rebooted to the screen without any icons. I tried using the System Disk, but the DVD doesn't respond. I changed the sequence from Hard drive to CD in the bios but that didn't work either. I can use the F8 button to get to the normal, safe mode, or step by step.     - Explorer won't open After I downloaded a critical update for Windows ME a few days ago, I began getting the following error message "Explorer has caused an error in SHLWAPI.DLL. Explorer will now close." This now occurs every time I try to click on My Documents, My Computer, or access the Control Panel from the Start button. Explorer will no longer open so I can look at my files. I know it's there because it will still open up from the Explorer bar on Internet Explorer. IE works fine. Everything works fine, except for hot keys linking to Explorer to list files. I also get an error message similar to the one above but with SFG012B.DLL when I click on Start, Search for Files or Folders on my Desktop. I can access the Control Panel and Recycle Bin via the Explorer bar on Internet Explorer, but if I try clicking on the Recycle Bin icon or the Control Panel via the Start button, I get the same SHLWAPI.DLL error message.     - setupx corrupt wireless internet access I am trying to set up a Win ME Laptop to share an internet connection wirelessly using Speedtouch 120 and 570. In the install process, I get the error message that setupx.dll is corrupt and I have no choice but to exit. I have tried downloading a setupx.dll file off the web and got hold of it OK. I have tried out two remedies proposed for this problem: the first mentioned in a revised MS KB Q254953 article to ensure that the Property of the Hard Disk is not selected to be ?removable? and the second to ensure that the responsibility of managing the Virtual Memory is left to Windows in the Control Panel System Performance Dialog. Neither has worked and I am still unable to open applications requiring Virtual memory. While working on the second remedy, I was shocked to find that Windows ME says that I have minus 12034 MB free memory, even though the Property of the Hard Disk shows 69 GB free space on the drive. Even if I leave it to Windows to manage Virtual memory, what can it do if I have minus 12 GB of Virtual Memory? Of course, the number is all greyed since I have selected the option to let Windows manage Virtual Memory. There are other remedies mentioned for Windows 98 but I have not come across any other for ME. Could any expert or Microsoft suggest how to get Windows ME to provide a Plus 15 GB Virtual Memory with a Hard Disk having 69 GB free out of 75 GB so that I can start opening all applications? P.     - Freezing on startup This started showing up a couple of months ago. On startup, my Windows ME often freezes before it finishes loading. Desktop is there, so are hourglass and mouse arrow, but not all icons. CTL+ALT+DEL produces usual blue screen, says "System is Busy." Message goes on to say "The system is waiting for the Close Program box to be displayed. You can wait and see if it appears or you can restart your computer." I don't know what the Close Program box is, and waiting doesn't produce one. Pressing CTL+ALT+DEL again re-starts the computer and Windows loads completely -- usually. But sometimes repeated pressing of CTL+ALT+DEL does not restart the computer -- the blue screen and message just sit there. Only recourse is to switch off power. Was able to delete about half but others were labeled "disk write protected" so I was not able to clean, delete or quarantine. Well that sounds like the Active Desktop 'enhancement' available from here:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/previous/gallery/default.mspx
If so, right click the desktop, select Active Desktop, uncheck it. But
better still uncheck 'Show Web Content'. Active Desktop is a security risk.
If you have a Wallpaper you like that requires Active Desktop, find the .jpg
(probably in My Pictures or C:\Windows\Web\Wallpaper), open it with Paint,
click File | Save As and save it as a Windows Bitmap. Select that as your
wallpaper and you won't need Active Desktop enabled.
