system restore & disk defragment not working properly

when i try to restore my computor the precentage bar goes
to 30% and my computor restarts also when tring to disk
defrag it keeps restarting with message that something is
writing to my hard drive and changing content.any help
would be welcome.

What if any error messages do you get from System Restore when we know
that we can provide the correct solution to any problems, as for your
defrag problem download this program developed by Koldbear and associates.

Get the free ScanDefrag. It is the most advanced disk maintenance
program there is. It runs Disk Cleanup, ScanDisk, and Disk
Defragmenter. It's easy to setup and use, and it can deal with
problems like "drive's contents have changed: restarting...".
Get it and read about all the options it has that you can use.

It is not unusual to see Defrag restart a number of times.
It is , however, unusual to see ScanDisk restart.
This is why I suggest starting it at bedtime and letting it run overnight.

Always run Defrag in SAFE-MODE only! Once in safe-mode, do SystemTools/
DiskCleanup. Wait until harddisk activity stops. Then start Defrag.

Re System Restore
What EXACT error do you get when attempting to restore back to an existing
point?
Can you create a manual Restore point?



It's possible that you haven't installed the System Restore Patch - without
which any current restore points are just space fillers.
To check this, look for the file C:\Windows\System\SMGR.DLL - r-click on the
file, and select Properties.
What's the version number? - if it's v4.90.0.3003 then you have installed
the patch, and we have to look elsewhere for the problem
if it's v4.90.0.2533, then you need to install the patch.

To install the patch, either visit Windows Update, or go here, and download
the patch for offline install

Run the installer, and windows should reset System Restore at the same time,
clearing your old restore points (which wouldn't have worked, anyhow), and
creating a single new one.
You should then reset the maximum allocation for SR by going to the
adjustment slider at System Properties | Performance | File System | Hard
Disk - most people find that 200-400MB is quite sufficient for most
purposes, unless installing/uninstalling large applications such as Office.
