    - Windows Logon Missing Hello. I am running Windows ME. I did a reinstall to correct a midi problem. This worked, but created a new problem. I no longer get a logon box at startup. I have researched this extensively and taken all the steps I have found suggested. I believe I have all the basic setups correct and assume it is a registry issue. I have used the following in control panel: Passwords to enable different user settings; Users to set up different user profiles and Network to add the Microsoft Family Logon Client and select it as primary logon. I have tried removing all this, deleting all .pwl files and selecting Windows Logon to see if I could get a basic logon -- no go.     - Windows Explorer crash Windows Explorer stop responding after is senses a connection on the onboard NIC. I have removed the drivers (Intel Pro 100) and install them again. I have disabled the onboard card and installed a Cardbus NIC with the same results. History: The computer was working fine until I tried installing a Dlink DWL-G650 wireless network card. I have removed all hardware and applications that is associated with the card. I have rolled the registry back to a date prior to the Wireless NIC install with the same results.     - Problem with no icons appearing on desktop The desktop image is displayed, but when you go to Task manger (ctrl,alt,del one time) nothing appears. Booted into Safe Mode and samething. Any ideas? This is on a laptop and occured after the user had been browsing the Internet. Again nothing but the desktop image shows up on the desktop and right clicking produces no screen properties.     - Unable to create bootup floppy Greetings. Working on my sister's machine Pavilion 7840 766Mhz 64MB RAM WinME, I have everything working, updated, and startup preferences set. I wish to make a full backup on CDR(W) for the 6GB of used space. Reading somewhere, I should have a floppy boot disk created to get the CD-ROM drives recognized to be used to reinstall the backup. Attempting such, I get a list of files not found with the extension of .ebd. Searching manually on the restoration disks and hard drive, I can only find a folder under Windows named EBD but the extensions are mostly .sys. Can anyone tell me where to find these files? If I could find a backup program that creates a bootable CD, that would eliminate the need of a floopy boot disk, right?     - Virus & Spyware trouble Problem with my daughter's Sony (ME) notebook, she used AOL, now the computer is about useless. I ran AVG anti-virus, ad-aware, & cwshredder. Each found and either deleted or quarntined a TON of stuff. But this seems to have only aggravated the situation. At each reboot, most of the junk in still there, regenerating I suppose. Tried running the apps in safe mode, same results. With AVG, scan the files, and each time comes up with: Trojan horse downloader.dyfica.2.ba (and 4 more, different #s) Trojan horse downloader.istbar.5.E ( and 3 more, different #s) Trojan horse downloader.small.14.1f Trojan horse downloader.agent.7.f Ad-aware comes up with about 500 hits each run.     - agp recommendation? My monitor is starting to strange random colour and brightness changes. I am not totally sure if the monitor is at fault (it *is* an old NEC MultiSync 3FGx, but it has been the most reliable compared to a few other monitors I've been using on other pc's). When I wiggle the video cable slightly near the card connector, the colour/brightness problem re-occurs. I've tightened the connection as much as possible. I've also opened the pc case and have reseated the video card. But the problem is still the same. The current video card is a GeForce MX AGP with 32meg ram. The next product I am looking at that seems affordable (under $30 cdn) is an ATI All-in-Wonder RADEON 9000pro AGP with 64meg ram.     - Repairing ME When earlier versions of Windows became corrupted it was possible to repair damaged files or to make an installation on top of the existing installation.     - Reinstalling WinME Is it possible to partition my HD, reinstalling WinME on the new partition, then shift the program files I have on the HD over to the new partition and finally remove the old partition? Or am I just dreaming? I just hate taking it somewhere and getting every program and file I have on it removed and then put back on it after reformatting the HD and reindtalling WinME. Also, I am afraid of not getting some of the programs back up and running otherwise. Any suggestions? PS...     - Disappearing Resources in Me after running IE6 ok for approx 1 hou I am having trouble with my resources disappearing suddenly while running IE6. On startup I only have Mcafee Viruscan and Firewall, the internet connection icon, the volume control and Resource meter running in my systray. I have used adware SE Personal 1.5 tools to disable just about everthing which I think I can safely, from startup. I have used Spybot and Adware (neither run as resident) to remove various objects/unnecessary programs and have carried out a complete system viruscan and defrag without any problems. Before i connect to the internet I have around 70% free resources which goes down to about 59% after connecting (broadband)and opening IE6. Everything seems ok for about and hour but then things start to seize up and I get a warning that I am low on resources and they have usually gone down to about 7% (even 1% on one occasion) and I have to close down to get back to normal or if I'm not quick enough my system hangs completely. I suspect that IE6 may be bugged but I do not know what to do that I haven't already tried.     - Icon Cache In ME I've accumulated quite a number of icons on my desktop and I've noticed recently they are slow to come up and some of them just show the Windows icon until I right click on Refresh. I can't seem to find any Icon Cache in the registry; is there a way to fix this? Mike, I lost your reply post, but I deleted the file you suggested (haven't tried the registry patch yet) and rebooted; strangely enough, it did create itself again, but this time, smaller. The original file was 1387 KB and when recreated, 904 KB, but now the icons all come up at the same time on a reboot. I think I'll leave well enough alone. Thanks.     - e-mail problems I have two machines, one with XP and the other with ME. I recently switched to broadband from dialup internet. I cannot access or send e-mail from the ME machine but can with the XP machine. The accounts are set up identical on both . I have tried to both Outlook and Outlook express with the same results.     - Occasional Boot Failure During the boot sequence WinMe sometimes hangs after the Taskbar and Desktop icons appear but before applications are loaded. The keyboard doesn't work, the mouse arrow is an hourglass that will move but won't click, and the movement produces a rasping sound in the speakers. Reset is always successful, Scandisk and Dr Watson find nothing. Bootlog Analyser tells me it happens somewhere around Enumerating Microsoft Kernel Audio Mixer (the exact place varies) and even if the boot is successful this group of operations may recycle or take much longer than usual. In order to put this subject to rest, I have one more question: My drive C shows up with only 2 G's, because I had chosen "No" for FAT16 and the rest of it is hidden (I am sure). If I were to format this drive as the Primary DOS Partition and then upon reinstallation of WinME chose "Yes" for FAT32, would it give me back the missing half of my 80 GB drive? The visible half in drive D as the extended DOS Partition, I would very much like to keep, since I installed all of my applications and programs there, while drive C contains the OS WinME only.     - System Restore problem My system Restore stopped automatically recording restore points. I flushed the SR disk and the system recorded a system check point deleting all the old restore points. However, after 20 hours of computer time no automatic check points are being created. I tried a manual check point and the calender indicates that a point has been created. I did notice that the disk space is set at 4675 mb and when I try to increase the mb by moving the slide to the right it will not move and displays "insufficient disk space".     - Legacy Scanner Problem I have a system (200MHZ, 4GB HDD, 128MB RAM) that I have upgraded to WIN ME; previous OS was WIN95. On the previous install with '95 everything worked correctly; I have a sheetfed scanner (ISA board, Info ImageReader SE6C). The scanner worked fine with 95, but cannot be used with WIN ME.     - Reinstalling ME I have an ME machine that I gave up on a while back. As I remember, I was getting some error about corrupt registry and the machine would not re-boot (a year ago). Instead of it sitting on a shelf, I want to try to get it to work again. I started the machine with the emergency boot disk, and ran ScanDisk. Fiddling around with the results, I saw an area to restore an old registry point. I did that, and the machine re-booted. (Now, the left side of the windows explorer is blank, doesn't show the tree of folders) I downloaded Spybot, and removed some junk that it found (I've used Spybot a lot, I trusted the results) Now, upon reboot, the machine always wants to do a ScanDisk, because the "abnormal system termination" checkbox is checked. And, I always cancel that. Anyway, the machine is a mess, and I want to re-install the OS. I would like to save some of the stuff I have on it. Can I re-install over top of the existing OS within wiping the drive ? I seem to see varying opinions about this. Any caveats ? This whole process has been misery (I probably will be flamed for not giving enough info, but I give up on fixing it. I need to re-install) Any caveats about trying to go to W2K pro ?     - Drive Locked or Not Formatted I had ran the "disk cleanup" utility on my machine. Got the blue screen and would not clear. Reset machine and drive was no longer accessable. Installed a spare drive that I had and loaded ME onto it to get my machine back up. Tried to run scandisk from safe mode and Dos mode. Safe mode says drive is locked by disk utility or needs to be formatted. DOS mode says invalid media. Drive space can see drive and reports it as having 0 bytes available and 0 bytes used, but does report file system as FAT. Fdisk also sees drive and reports the file system as unknown.     - msn messenger, no voice Using MSN Messenger 6.2.0137. Whenever I try to initiate or Accept a voice chat request, Messenger locks up. I am not sure when this problem started, but it used to work just fine. Does anyone know how to fix this? I have since disabled the older Windows Messenger (did the Registry tricks that have been posted). But I do believe that the voice chat still worked in MSN Messenger 6.x after that.     - disk utility has drive locked After running disk cleanup, I was unable to access one of my drives. Scandisk was unable to check the drive because it says a disk utility has the drive locked. I have strange vertical lines showing up on my icons and on tool bars. On the
tool bars it looks like bar codes. I rebooted and ran virus scan several
times. It is on a small netwirk but no other computers are having trouble.
Anyone know what this might be?

It is quite possible that the icon cache has become corrupted.

The Win Me icon cache is the file ShellIconCache (no extension) in your
windows folder. You can safely delete this file and reboot and it will be
rebuilt. I would also suggest that you increase the number of icons that
can be cached. The easiest way to do this is to download the registry
patch IconCacheFix from http://www.aumha.org/reg1.htm and merge it with
your registry.
