    - A bit of weirdness Hi,,,I need a little bailing out. I just reformatted and reloaded WinME, (a Dell version) One of the problems that I've run into is in Explorer,,, (rt.clicking on start and choosing explore). It doesn't shows the "folders" view. Normally, you could see all the folders, drives etc...on the left. Now it shows a gray box with an X in the upper rt corner. Now supposedly this PC was loaded with an updated version of Windows ME, and now with every start up, there are quite a few "Explorer has caused an error in <unknown> and will now close.     - Need new anti-virus software Hi! Norton A-V came installed on my computer and I used to renew it once a year. After Gateway reformatted my hard drive I had to buy new A-V software and I purchased & installed Norton 2004. It has been nothing but trouble since the first day, despite many uninstalls, reinstalls and another hard drive reformat. Symantec is working with me via e-mail to try to resolve the problems but they are just too numerous and I'm sick of it; this has been an ongoing problem since October 2003. It causes so many errors, etc. that I'm running with no anti-virus protection right now. So to finally get to my question: Can anyone recommend a good anti-virus program other than Norton? I'd probably be better off buying the software on CD instead of downloading something because of my slow, dial-up connection. I really appreciate any advice - thanks!!     - Windows ME Hangup I was loading software to move digital recorder files to my laptop, after loading Direct X I was prompted to restart PC. When restarting ME hangs up with logo. I have tried everything on emergency disk and ME will not load. I get an error in DOS about %1 and %2 file won't copy. When I run the diagnostics I get a drive 0 error. But in DOS the C drives seems to work fine. Is there anyway to get ME to work short of reformating the drive with the rescue disk? It is an HP laptop. Please respond to gmarmaduke@aol.com.     - Help! I left my computer with my mother when I moved across country. After 8 months, I have it back, but it so muddled with miscellaneous programs, etc. that it won't even shut down by itself!     - System configuration Does anyone know how to do a "cleanup" in the System Configuration Utility? I know you can unclick check-marks and click 'apply', then the system reboots.     - ScanDisk Lock-Up Saturday afternoon I was tooling along in Windows ME doing the little things I do everyday. I had a few programs open, was online (dial-up) and creating stationery in OE when suddenly everything froze up solid. CtlAltDel wouldn't work so I flipped the switch on the surge protector, waited half a minute, then flipped it back on. I expected to have a run through ScanDisk and when it came up it had all my drives in its list--the 20 GB C, the 8 GB D, and an external drive I keep backups on--an 80 GB Maxtor that I acquired new last year. ScanDisk went through the C and D drives with only a few restarts--but when it was half-way through the G it locked up, so I had to power off again and start over. The subsequent ScanDisk attempt locked the computer up promptly, so I powered off again and unplugged the G drive from its USB port. Once more I powered up and ScanDisk behaved normally--but now I can't have G plugged in at boot-up because ScanDisk loads to check it and before it or I can do anything ME is locked up again. However, if I plug the external in after boot-up, a single-pane Explorer window opens for it and I can double-click and view what's on it; I can also access its files from my graphics program! But if I close its initial window then try use to Windows Explorer or My Computer to browse it the 'puter locks up solid with the G drive busy light on. The external drive has about 10 GB of files on it. I don't run anything from it--not even installs--nor do I link to its files when I use them in stationery, etc.--but I'd saved a couple of jpgs with normal names to it that day. I've since played with the piece of stationery that seemed to be the troublemaker, but nothing's gone wrong--and both the C and D drives are behaving in WE and My Computer. I haven't installed any new programs since May 8. What can or should I do about this? I haven't tried a Restore although I have a choice of two available from Friday, because I wasn't sure if I should have the G drive plugged in to do that.     - No Windows - Noel I couldn't reply to the response you gave me on my first post. Nothing shows up on the Safe Mode other than those two files from McAfee. I'm using Microsoft ME and I've installed a 3rd party DVD using the USB connection and a D- Link Wi-Fi card (which was all working until...I tried to remove the kazaa icon in the tray). System crashed and only rebooted to the screen without any icons. I tried using the System Disk, but the DVD doesn't respond. I have ME installed on a Compac Presario desktop. Everything works fine, except that when I cold start, right after the POST, it displays a screen which requires me to press F1 to acknowledge before it will complete startup. A support rep said I needed to default the BIOS settings after POST. I can get to the screen, but there isn't any such choice. I don't wish to blindly change anything to really mess things up, does anyone know which setting I need to change?

There must be. There'd be a main menu item and/or an instruction as to which
F key to press to 'Load default setup and exit' or something similar.
