Windows ME Restore and Autorun glitches: any advice to solve?
I have recently made several changes to my Compaq Presario 5000,
running Windows ME. I now have a situation where System Restore
Points are not being retained (I can create a restore point, but when
I go back, they are not there.) The computer also does respond to
Autorun when I insert CD-ROMS into my internal or external drive (Yes,
I do have "Autorun Notification checked for both drives.) I did a
Restore point set before making several modifications, and noted a
previous restore point reflected at that time, but none since and all
the old ones are gone.
The modifications were that I installed an additional 256K RAM (to now
total 384) plus a second (85GB) internal hard drive to the system. I
encountered no real problems installing, formatting and having the
system recognize these additions.
I then tried to install and run Pinnacle Studio 8. While this
software seemed to install properly, I have ongoing hangups in the
process, it was not able to recognize my CD burner, etc. I have done
several deinstall/reinstalls of Studio, downloaded a registry patch
for this s/w, etc. Studio has continued to de-evolve in its ability
to operate and I have picked up the restore point/autorun issue.
Any sage advice for "nip and tuck" solutions, or am I facing the
dreaded "system restore" option?
I also have a Windows ME installation disk, so I could try to
reinstall just the operating system, but do not know how that would
impact programs already installed, data on the hard drive, MSIE 6,
etc. I have backed up all of my data, including Outlook Express mail
and address book, but I am concerned about the ability to run other
software that I have installed.
All ideas most gratefully accepted,

driver not loading. ntkern.vxd
I just put win Me on an old win 95 computer that had
crashed (I reformated the drive before upgrading). I
previously had cable modem to the internet. after the
upgrade, I cannot connect to the internet. When I look in
device manager under the ethernet adaptor it gives me the
message "the NDIS.VXD, NTKERN.VXD device loaders for this
device could not load the device driver (code 2)."
I searched my hard drive and I do not have ntkern.vxd. I
do have ndis.vxd in c:/windows/system. I added it to
c:/windows.system/vmm32.
I looked over my old win 95 installation disc to see if I
could extract ntkern from it, but it isn't there. I
scanned my win Me disk, but it isn't there either.
Apparently I need it for running the ethernet card. Any

Adware - NDrv.exe
Hi,
I have something running in my processes called NDrv.exe,
I looked it up on google and believe it's adware/spyware
because it seems to be robbing my computer of CPU. Just
wondering if you guys you know how to delete this and
everything related to it safely. It appears to be a hidden
folder and when using Norton AV 2004 or Ad Aware 6.0 they
don't detect it. Thanks in advance Tag: startup Tag: 245017
HELP! I need to replace NOTEPAD.exe
Hi,
A couple of days ago, I contracted a nasty CWS variant
hijacker, which also changed/hijacked my notepad.exe and
corrupted it, so that anytime I would try to open notepad,
it would attempt to connect with a website(my firewall
would warn me). After I got rid of the trojan with
CWShredder....I no longer had a copy of notepad.exe on my
ME computer, and no way of reinstalling it. Any ideas?

Opening Slowly
I'm experiencing a weird "slowness" problem that manifests
itself with documents and web sites.
If I double-click on a Word document to open it, it takes
forever (60-90 seconds) to open. If I start Word (which
only takes a second or two), then go to File/Open and open
the same document, it opens quickly.
Similarly, if I click Start/Run and enter a website (e.g.,
http://www.microsoft.com) it takes forever to open. If I
start Internet Explorer and type the same website address,
it opens quickly.
In both instances, the mouse pointer turns into the
hourglass icon when the pointer is positioned over the
taskbar.
The machine is up-to-date on all Windows updates, is virus-
free (according to NAV and McAfee) and spyware-free
(according to Ad-Aware and Spybot S&D), and freshly
defragged.
Any ideas what might be causing this? Tag: startup Tag: 245014

minimal drivers on startup
I'd like to boot up WinME with the absolute minimum amount
of drivers and TSR's so that I can play my games (for
example, Superbike 2001) running smoother without
unnecessary programs running in the background.
I figure running a selective startup through the System
Configuration Utility would be the best way to go about
that. My question is, which items do I absolutely need to
keep checked in order for the games to run properly (ie.,
sound, video, mouse drivers, direct x, etc.). The names
of some items aren't very descriptive, so unchecking them
is uncertain what effect it will have on the system.
I'd like to prevent Norton Antivirus from starting up at
all, as well. Can I uncheck all static VxDs and startup
items? How about any items in system.ini and win.ini? Tag: startup Tag: 244988

EXE files won't run!
A friend of mine has a Windows ME system that developed a terrible problem
after a reboot. No .EXE program will run. When she tries to launch an .EXE
file, the unknown file type window opens to ask what program to open
"EXPLORER.EXE" with (or whichever program is being opened).
We can't get any program to open, EXCEPT through file association. For
example, we can open a document after telling the system that .DOC files are
opened with Word. Then Word will launch, strangely enough. But try to run
Word by itself and the .EXE fault occurs.
The System Restore program is an .EXE file, or we'd run that to restore the
registry.
Also, and I guess that this shows the deep-level file-type associations have
been clobbered, all .EXE programs show up without their icons.
Hoping someone can point me to a file or files that are probably missing.
Thanks in advance,

~7583836889.TMP (Yes, people, another one....)
Hi. Like so many in the weeks past, I am getting that God
forsaken error message when I start up
Windows...: "Explorer has caused an error in
~7583836889.TMP, Explorer will now close". And of course,
by letting it do so, I am left with a blank desktop (no
icons or anything) and a mouse pointer, forcing me to do
an improper hard shut down, only to have the same problem
when I reboot. I have seen a lot of the previous posts of
this problem, the solutions do not work for me...
1. I ran Norton Anti-Virus (with updates and such), came
up clean...
2. I ran an Anti-Spyware program from AOL (thats my ISP),
that didnt solve it.
3. I ran a different Spyware/Adware detection program,
something called X-Cleaner, or somthing from
www.spywareguide.com , that didn't help...
4. I booted into Safe Mode and manually deleted the
program, but when I reboot normally, it seems to re-create
itself back in the C:\WINDOWS\TEMP folder...
5. When I just tried to do a regular delete, it says that
the file is being used by Windows, and doesn't allow me to
do so.
If ANYONE has a suggestion or ANYTHING, one that WORKS,
then darn it, let me know PLEASE!!!

dial-up networking problem
For the past few days, my dial-up networking window keeps poppping up
whether I want it to or not, at VERY annoying times. Most days, it's
waiting for me (opened) when I turn on my pc b4 the whole desktop even
loads!
I did nothing to make this happen, as it started from one day to the
next without my having installed or fiddled with anything. I don't have
any "automatically connect" boxes checked (never did), so I don't know
why this keeps happening.
It's very annoying because every time it does it (anywhere from every 10
seconds to 1x/minute) you have to stop what you're doing in another
program and close the dial-up window.
Anybody know how I can correct this problem? Please give me simple

Computer freezing/hanging up
Hi! Hopefully someone can tell me what to do.
My computer freezes at least 50 percent of the time on
start up and shut down. It always freezes up when I'm
just using it. It freezes up anywhere from the moment
I've started it until I've been on about 3 hours. There
are no error messages. Most of the time everything,
including the mouse freezes, but sometimes I still have
control of the mouse, I just can't do anything with it.
Whenever these freezes happen, I must push the power
button to turn the computer off manually.
I've been reading the forum and have tried some of the
things I've read here, but nothing has helped yet. Here
are some of the things I've done:
Set my hardward accelerator to "None."
Downloaded, updated and run SpyBot, AdAware, Stinger & CW
Shredder. I've updated and run Avast AntiVirus and it
came up clean.
In Safe Mode, I've run Disk Cleanup, Scan Disk and Disk
Defrag, in that order. I've done that several times,
actually, and everytime I run Scan Disk, I get the message
that there were errors that were repaired. (I ran a
standard scan yesterday, then a thorough one immediately
after and got the message that there were no problems with
my hard drive.)
I've cleaned out my hard drive case.
I booted to DOS from my start up disk and let my computer
sit for 11 hours. It did not freeze up.
I let my computer sit in Safe Mode for 6 hours. It did
not freeze up.
I've paired down my start up list.
I booted to DOS using the start up disk and went through
the steps looking for the wininit file (If I recall the
name correctly). There was none so I did the following
steps, still in DOS, regarding System Restore. (I can't
remember exactly what those steps were now, but it was
often repeated advice from here, so you all probably know
what I'm referring to.)
I have also downloaded Hijack This! in case any of you
want me to put the saved log file here for you to look at.
Any advice at this point? I am a truly lost Computer
Dummy.
Thanks,

All of a sudden the Icon in Windows Explorer for my 2nd CD-ROM (F:

It used to say "Compact Disc (F)" with the appropriate Icon but now it
taken on the identity of the drive below it.
i.e. it now says "CompactFlash (F:)" and displays the Compact Flash

The drive below says "CompactFlash (G:)" and that is correct of

It still functions as a Compact Disc of course when you insert a CD
