My computer 'sort of' shuts down when inactive for a
while. The tower says its on, but the monitor goes into
standby mode. When I try to activate it, nothing happens.
It seems to 'stall'. I end up having to hold the button
down until the machine finally switches off, then restart.
Any ideas pls?

Right click on any blank area of the desktop. Select properties and click on
the screen saver tab. In there click on the Power option at the bottom.
Disable the option to shut the monitor off - you can just pick the option
"Always On" if you'd like. This will prevent it from shutting the monitor
off in the future though it will leave your PC on all the time and you'll
probably want to shut it off using the start > shutdown option.

If what Galen has suggested doesn't work, try turning off power management
to see if that is what's causing the issue. If it is, you may need a bios
upgrade. You may also need to upgrade your device drivers, as this can also
cause issues with power management.
