the other day, i got an error message '... caused an error
in .../...will now close'. upon rebooting next day, my
firewall reported that 'ssdprv.exe' was trying to access
the internet. i declined to allow this as i didn't know
what it was. after searching, i couldn't find an
explanation that i could easily comprehend, but somehow
ascertained [which is why i included it in this post] that
somehow both were somehow connected. is this correct, and
can someone explain about 'ssdprv.exe'???

any and all assistance appreciated!!
thanks,
allyson

It is a part of Microsoft's implementation of Universal Plug 'n Play (uPnP) and will
communicate over TCP port 5000. It is a LAN protocol not an Internet protocol so it is OK
if it is blocked at a gateway FireWall. If you are using a SOHO Router such as the Linksys
BEFSR41 than this is good. The PC will communicate with the Router via uPnP. If this PC
has a software FireWall than allow it to pass TCP port 50000. If this a singular PC hooked
to the Internet with no SOHO Router than you can remove uPnP as it is not needed.

what i'm curious about NOW is this--why would the program
try to access the internet [especially since i'm not part
of a network]??

thanks again--i can always rely on you guys!!!
hope you all have a wonderful new year--

It isn't necessarily trying to connect to the Internet. It is looking for peer services
such a Router that is uPnP enabled or a print server that is uPnP enabled. TCP/IP is the
protocol of the Internet and it is the protocol of a Local Area Network (LAN) as well..
There are some protocols that you don't want to be leaked to the Internet such as NetBIOS
over IP or uPnP. That is what FireWall's are for OR you turn off these protocols.

When a user has a SOHO Router such as a Linksys BEFSR41 for Cable or DSL uPnP is
automatically not forwarded from the LAN to the WAN side. Other protocols such as TCP/UDP
ports 135 ~ 139 and 445 can be specifically blocked at the Router. This way you can take
advantage of these protocols on the LAN side but NOT worry about Internet worms and hackers
taking advantage of these protocols from the POV of the Internet.

If you are on Cable or DSL the price is low enough to use a SOHO Router with even just one
computer. If you have more than one computer such a device supplies even more benefits.
