My father's computer intermittently boots to a frozen
desktop. The start button is the only thing that works.
Nothing in that pop up window and none of the icons are
functional. He reboots and all is well. It is a desktop
PC--an HP Pavilion
I still can not get the search engine on the Microsoft
knowledge base to work.
Can anyone here fix my problem or Microsoft's advanced

Missing Sound
Hi:
Upon Flash-Upgrading my BIOS with a "Sure Flash Technology" diskette, I was
successful, except for one thing: my Sound had disappeared.

Windows won't boot
Since I removed a virus from my computer every so often
windows will decide suddenly to restart 70% of the time
this is successfull.
Also every so often windows can't boot and I recive this
message "Please wait while Setup updates your
configuration files.
This may take a few minutes..."
And nothing happens

PPThumbs notepad folders
For some reason(unknown to me)PPThumbs notepad folders
have appeared in some of (My Document) files. Can someone
please tell me what these folders mean and if I can safely
delete them. It appears that they are filled with some

Gettng nowhere
Getting an "high risk" attack from 127.0.0.1 coming from
my own network!! I dont have a network, this PC is alone
by itself. Of course imposssible to get anything from
Symantec. Anyone know how to get an e-mail to them??
Or what does this "attack" means and how to get rid of
it. It comes at least 10 to 12 times every time I'm using
my CP.

hlpcfb.dll error message in explorer
I was surfing the internet when a pop-up ad came up, but
the browser was blank. I right clicked to close and it
had a message that said something like the browser is
busy, do you still want to close? and i did click yes.
the computer froze at that point. I rebooted, and then
got the error message from explorer: explorer has found
an error in hlpcfb.dll. explorer will now close. It
would not allow me to boot up and run any programs.
I tried booting in safe mode which worked, but then I
tried using system restore and it said an error was found
when trying to run the system restore exe file. I booted
into dos and deleted the hlpcfb.dll file and rebooted.
that at least got me to boot up so I could work in normal
mode. I ran my spybot software, and am running my virus
checker now. Any other tips and suggestions I might be

After Installing the Links Wireless G PCI Adapter to my

Multiple problems occur
1 On trying to connect to Internet Explorer an error log
message pops up

3: and finally the computer locks and needs to be

The only way to restore the problems is to remove the PCI
card and carry out a system restore.

Problem with icon text prompts
Running Windows ME. When I hover my cursor over menu type icons in IE6
or MYIE2 or the status bar/system tray, I don't get any text prompts.
However, when hovering over icons in Word and Thunderbird, I do. Any

Slow moving screen and memory problems
I have a portable with Win ME. After nearly three years of use, and
downloading numerous apps and deleting them, I find the screen is slow to
work. Recently three large Word documents brought the machine to a halt
through lack of sufficient memory to do any saving. I have tried freebie
registry cleaners, but they seem to take out too much and I have to use
restore to get the machine to work again. Any ideas how I can release
memory?

pictures crash my computer
i download a lot of picture,email, digital camera etc.
everything was fine, now i try to open a picture and it
crashes. i can get to the picture file unopened and it

internet explorer
Thank you so much for the information that was given me
about my internet explorer causing an error in TPS108. I
did what was said to do and found out that there were
several pest attached to my internet explorer. I
downloaded SpyBot and did a search and destroy but it
said that it could not fix the error. Do I need to

IE5.5 won't remember temp history
My IE5.5 SP2 doesn't seem to remember the temporary history (the one in the
Address bar down-arrow selection) from session to session anymore. I would
be entering sites manually from time to time and the feature would work
then, but when I close down IE and reopen a new session, all the addresses
are gone. This was never a problem for years.. and now all of a sudden the
history is failing. What's the problem? The "regular" History (the one
called up with the History button itself) works fine.
When I check the Documents listing from the Start menu, I see about 15
recent documents (I seem to recall that the list used to be much longer in
the past, but now there are only 15. Meanwhile... I have hunted for some
more info about my original problem and find that there are discussions
about the "TypedURLs" in the Registry. Well.. I cannot find such a Key value
with regedit! Furthermore, I discovered that the usual drop-down list for

ANTI-VIRUS quesiton
Just installed (& ran) a new McAfee Virus Scan 2004
program, which found 23 infected files. It cleaned several
but remaining files could not be "cleaned or quarratined".
And a few could not be deleted (auto-write?). How do I

Can't Find Operating System Error Message On Boot
I recently had to reinstall my Windows ME on my system. When I did I of
course lost all of my updates and IE 6. I have spent the last 2 days
getting all of my updates and getting IE 6 to work but when I started my
computer today I got a "Can not find operating system" error message. I had
to boot up about 6 times before I finally started up. I had this same
problem once before when I had to do a reinstall. I have often thought I
must have a virus but have not been able to detect one with various

Problems Running Scan Disk and Defrag
Hi. When I try to run Scandisk or Defrag they stop and restart because of
drive activity.
I've disabled my anti-virus software and my firewall software and this
didn't seem
to help. Please, don't tell me I must use a selective startup by selecting
individual
items in MsConfig to prevent them from starting at startup. I hope there's a
better way.

When ever I try to download updates or system patchs my pc
will download and then tell me to restart my pc, then I

Wall paper and icons disappeared
No matter what I tried, both the wall paper and all icons
disappeared. Instead -- a full Yahoo screen pops up, but
has no exit button for cancellation, unless I shut down
the computer.

Help and Support Error
I am currently using ME version of windows, and came
across an error opening the help and support page
(start>help). The help and support page tries to open,
then an error message appears stating " the initialization
of the helpcenter failed. Error 2147024891".
When I try to close it, a window pops up and says " the
application is busy. do you want abort anyway".
Does anyone know how to fix this so I can utilize the help
and support pages.

cannot update windows ME
Hello
I hvae downloaded all windows ME updates however once the
computer restarts and attempts to install the updates it
halts and message says that windows could not install all
components and that any running programs should be shut
down. I have shut everything however I just get the same
message over and over again and cannot install updates.

This is no big deal but I'm curious and trying to learn more about my
system. When my PC boots the desk top icons etc. appear and then the
desktop disappears for a brief fraction of a second and then reappears as it

on hd.
At the moment C: partition is bootable and
D is for some backup and safekeeping stuff.
If i run the OEM disk, will it leave alone the

hi i have a 766id computer.with WINDOWS ME the problem i
