For whatever it's worth and especially the Loom (I had a need to know myself). Obviously WinME and less wouldn't 'have' to be included when updating, since no newer updates are available, but anything beyond Me and upwards would be 'advised' to use the updated version.     - Changed .exe files I attempted to reinstall Windows ME from the Options direstory in Windows and then all my .exe files became .lnk files. I cannot rerun Setup.exe nor Restore nor run any .exe file. I cannot connect to the Internet. The good news is, I can boot up in Safe mode or Regular mode. And I can view pictures by right clicking on a file and clicking Open With -> Irfanview. The same with .htm files Open With -> Internet Explorer. I can't open .html files. My file associations must be deleted. I need to associate .exe files with a program to run them. A Ubuntu disk works ok, but I don't want to install it because it won't access the Internet. And it erases my hard disk. I have no A: drive or read/write CD drive anymore, just a plain CD-ROM drive. I need a Windows Me bootable install disk for CD-ROM or a Windows XP bootable install disk, I suppose. My icons are all plain blank icons. I'm sure someone put a virus on my computer. I am using my 2nd computer with Windows 98 to write this and access the Internet. Any help will be appreciated. I've come to depent on my computer. Thanks!     - Problem with computer freezing while using IE 6 This is making me nuts. I can't figure out what is causing this behavior. I have Windows ME (fully patched and updated). I have an old NetVista 2276 (which, I think, is known for freezing problems). Mostly, it locks up (or freezes) when I am using Internet Explorer 6 (fully patched and updated) and loading some heavily graphic site like Mapquest or Google Maps or Webshots. I have a different harddrive than the one originally installed (so it's a used hardrive installed about two weeks ago). I have a different version of Windows ME. The original one (OEM) got destroyed when the hardrive failed. I've seen this freezing behavior when using Windows ME in combination with Internet Explorer 6. The freezing also happened (but, MUCH-MUCH less) when I was using Ubuntu with Firefox. I ran an 8-1/2 hour memtest about a week or so ago -- with no errors. I thought it might be something to do with Ad-Shield but still happens when Ad-Shield in not installed. The thing that I find really interesting is that the computer froze much-much less when I was using Ubuntu with Firefox. I haven't tried Windows ME with Firefox to see if that would also cut down on the freezing. This freezing is recent behavior -- past six months or so. I was initially wondering if it had something to do with the harddrive failing. Obviously, not, since I've replaced the harddrive. Anyone got any idea what else can be causing this or how I can narrow it down further to see where it's coming from?? Oh, it can freeze dozens of times in an hour.     - If at first you don't succeed, rip a SystemRestore file? (to fix a 'Allo ME World I'm still trying to recover from a snafu while replacing my Nv GeForce 4 Mx440 with their FX5200. I'm about halfway there - if I'm lucky. If you winME veterans would scan my plan and vette it against your experience, then I would very much appreciate it. Feel free to tell me I don't understand but, while you're at it, please point the way to the light switch.... I got the FX5200 running on a backup drive. Seemed so easy when I had the right stuff at the right time. Problem now is cleaning up the original system drive. I got the Nv driver series off their web. If I a driver cd/floppy came with the fx5200, I lost it. Or maybe that's why it was such a bargain when I bought it? I thought the following seven step program would do: 1. From sweet running system drive: use DeviceManager to identify the driver file names associated with the fx5200 device. Save names in a skeleton batch file. 2. Use a focussed Search to find the full paths with those file names. Add them to the skeleton batch file. 3. Finish up the command file to extract each of these files from a SystemRestore .cab file. 4. Write the batch file and RestorePoint .cab file to a CD. 5. Shutdown system, swap problematic drive in, sweet running drive out. 6. Boot on winME Emergency Boot Diskette. Run the batch file. 7. Have the winME Install CD / Nvidia driver series CD handy then boot to normal mode. Especially for Mike Maltby - can System Restore .cab files be used this way?     - PC boots in Safe Mode, but no desktop icons I am aksking for help on behalf of my friend whose PC is giving him big time trouble. I don't know what he did, but when he tries to reboot normally, a blue screen appears with the message Windows Protection Error. He can boot into Safe Mode, but there are no desktop icons, not event the Start icon or clock. Nothing except his wallpaper. Can he do a Windows ME repair installation? What else can he try?     - forced adapter update now Error: 0D : 0347 : 000181C I replaced a GeForce4 MX440 a Kaser FX5200 128 MB Nvidia graphic card. It's box says it has some nice Nview Multi-Display capabilities and "TV-out support (NTSC/PAL) TV system". Will it support a decent flatscreen? I keep System Monitor on and lately began seeing the system "ekg" flatlining for about 10 seconds, then resuming for 10 seconds, and so on. Also recently an occasional black screen on the monitor it shares over a KVM switch it has shared for years. Monitor & switch probably OK since they act normal with the XP system I'm building. Now I'm seeing blue screens right after logging in, error: 0D : 0347 : 000181C. My googling turms up corrupt program instructions (maybe due to bad opcodes and the like?). And these often come from using wrong video drivers.. I tried forcing the Display applet to switch from the GeForce 4 to a FX5200 and that was a fight. The system says the drivers are unsigned. But it seems to resist changing the adapter to plain old system VGA also/ Any suggestions on getting this old guy bavk to work? This homebuilt is on a Gigabyte 7VT600P-RZC mob, 400 watt MGE psu(should I get a bigger PSU?), 1 GB DDR RAM(Should I add 1 or 2 GB RAM?). CPU is an Athlon XP 1066 MHz.     - InstallShield problem Hi; About 2 weeks ago, while dl'ing new defs for Spybot S&D, a newer version of Spybot began to self-install. Without thinking (which is the cause of most of my problems!), I let it proceed. Halfway thru, it choked. I dl'ed the new version and successfully installed it but it brought my system to a crawl, so I uninstalled it and re-installed the older version. Since then, I can't install any other programs. I get the following message: Setup Initialization Error Setup has detected that unInstallShield is in use. Please close unInstallShield and restart setup.     - Do You Have A Slow Running Computer? Your computer was running fine, and now all of a sudden it is terrible slow. Sometimes the program just locks up, and will not work. Other times, the entire computer freezes. You know, the point where you must hold the power button down for 5 seconds to shut the machine off. Or, if you are running earlier versions of Windows, the infamous Blue Screen of Death appears. All of these are signs something is wrong with the internals of the computer, and this is causing you to have a slow computer. Think back, and see if you can remember installing something or uninstalling something since the computer starting acting funny. Most likely, you did. It might have even been something as subtle as an update for your computer, or a greeting card, or even a screen saver. As a side note, screen savers are one of the worst pieces of software carrying spyware with it. If you do download something like this, use your spyware remover and remove the junk that came with it. Back to topic. We all install and uninstall software. The problem with doing this is it can mess up your registry files. The registry files are a set of operational files which tell the computer how to run and operate the computers software programs and hardware. When you install something new, it might write over an existing registry file. This will then cause the previous software not to work right, hence the freezing of the computer.... You might find someone who can help you if you post to a newsgroup
supporting those running Windows 2000. This newsgroup is primarily
intended for those running the Windows Millennium operating system. I no
longer have a PC running Win2K but I would start by checking the version
of shimgvw.dll and perhaps try replacing it with a clean copy, perhaps
from another PC.
