    - Rhyme but no Reason to System Restore points deletion 'opefully there is still time for me to learn to control our WinMe computer. I've noticed since I got to messing around with it, that System Restore points dissappearing for no reason I was aware of. I don't run some of the Disk Cleaning Utilities nearly as much as I used to. I used to Defragment alot (every night) because I had seen how disk (file) fragmentation can degrade system response time. Back then I never used System Restore points - was barely aware they existed. It also seemed I never needed them. Nowadays things have changed (Dunno why / wish I did) System Restore points can really save your system. In these circumstances, I am pretty sure that the Defragment utility destroys Restore points.     - Hibernate & Garbage Collection & Finer Points My oh my, the activity on this group seems to be getting thin like my hair... When you "hibernate" primarily for garbage collection ( the analog to memory as scandisk is for disk), one would rather not have their system take a nap. One just wants ME to clean up its used-memory and unused memory linked lists and then let the user do what ever they want. Unfortunately, as the name of the mode says, one will have to hibernate until taking the few steps required to wake up from hibernation. Those steps might easily take a minute or two. (On our computer, I have to go get a finger nail clipper but that's another story). I know everybody (except me, apparently) has known how to put their system into hibernation since Y2K but to allow me to be clear on how I Quickly "collect (memory) garbage", permit me to rewrite the manual on Hibernate: 1. Click Start then Shutdown then the Drop Down Arrow then Hibernate then OK. At this point if one keeps a sharp eye on the Shutdown menu, an icon resembling an Open Door appears then the screen goes black. Hibernation has begun. The way to Quick Garbage Collection is the same except, as soon as one sees the Open Door icon, begin alternately pressing and releasing the Space Bar about 5 times a second for about 4 seconds. The screen will go black but for only several (about 4) seconds. Then one will first see the monitor power LED light up, the system loud speakers will burp and the monitor screen will come back to life. If one kept the System Monitor utility program on during this process then they will see the memory garbage has been taken out also. Tag: scandisk Tag: 293472

    - CCleaner The recent thread on the CCleaner update prompted me to look at this utility again. It has been several years but I seem to recall one of the experts (Alias or Heirloom??) issuing a caution to use only the CLEANER component and nothing else.     - Harddrive diagnostic tool I would like to run a diagnostic tool to test the condition of the harddrive on our 6-7 year old Compaq laptop. It's been several years since I did this test and I have forgotten how to go about it.     - upgrade?Nvidia AGP8x FX5200 etc.? I am using the GE Force4 MX440 and it works for email, YouTube, and the WinME MovieMaker program still handles our old Sony VX1000 camcorder. Occasionally I crank out small win9x swdev projects mainly with VC++4.0 (yeah, its ancient, like me). On the shelf are DevStudio 5(win98se) and VisualStudio6(NT4). Stuff on the shelf seems to rarely come off the shelf. I thought I should do a little housecleaning and I discovered I also have an unused Kaser FX5200 128 MB Nvidia graphic card. It's box says it has some nice nview Multi-Display capabilities and "TV-out support (NTSC/PAL) TV system". Will it support a decent flatscreen? This homebuilt is on a Gigabyte 7VT600P-RZC mob, 400 watt MGE psu(should I get a bigger PSU?), 1 GB DDR RAM(Should I add 1 or 2 GB RAM?). CPU is an Athlon XP 1066 MHz.     - annoying sounds in ME Hi, I have an older pc running ME. One day i was just exploring this unit and found a way to change the 'sounds' on it. I chose the 'animal' type sounds. But I just want to go back to defaults or other sounds of my choosing. I hate these monkey, tiger, jungle type sounds every time I click with my mouse somewhere for a command. ANy ideas? I am used to using my xp pc's and cant remember what I did with this one.     - Runtime to Terminate I tried to install a freeware utility called BurnAwareFree version. Install process was ok. When I clicked the icon to run the program. The answer is bit funny. The registry is a database that stores information necessary to configure the system for your computers users, applications, and hardware devices. Why does it need to be cleaned (repaired)? Every time you install software on your computer, change a system setting, delete a program, all the changes are kept in the registry. Over time, your registry grows, however, it also can end up fragmented and full of unwanted registry items. These unwanted items occur by removing attributes of programs or deleting programs you no longer want without using the Add or Remove Programs function. Some programs do not always come with proper uninstall programs, so you are only able to delete a portion of the program. Or possibly you have moved a file, and now the program that used this file is unable to find it or it's an orphan file left over from an unsuccessful attempt to delete a program completely. In short, over time you end up with numerous misplaced files and objects which your computer can not process, this can slow your computer considerably, make start-up take forever and sometimes cause errors that will "crash" your computer....     - Computer shuts down automatically.     - Windows Media Player-No Audio Windows Media Player for Windows Me I suddenly lost audio through Windows Media Player. It will not play my audio CDs. This is what I have done. I tried installing my Sound Blaster Live driver. It processed through until it stopped and sent this message: â??File Driver6.CAB on Windows Me edition is needed.â?? At this point I did not know what to do next and aborted the driver installation. I then went to the Dell troubleshooting diagnostics for audio and it told me to search for the following files: midi=mmsystem.dll wave=mmsystem.dll I did a search and the files were not listed.     - Reinstalling Windows Me It sounded like it was too easy!! Successfully reinstalled Windows Me this morning, subsequently taking several hours downloading all the updates. In the process of downloading required utilities, I ran into a memory problem which made no sense. However I have subsequently found out that previous partitions appear to have remained, although they are not recognized in MY COMPUTER. Background: This is a 10 GB Compaq Laptop which is shipped with the O/S on the C: drive and the Recovery System on D:. A couple of years ago, I had created a new partition to house all of my data files., OE Message store, tmp and temp. Currently, MY COMPUTER shows C: at 4.86 GB and D: at 2.72 GB, however SYSTEMS INFORMATION shows the following; 3 Partitions Size 9.37 GB Partition Disk#0 (Partition #0) Size 4.88 GB Partition Disk#0 (Partition #1) Size 2.73 GB Partition Disk #0 (Partition #2) Size 1.75 GB BootIt NG shows the following; MBR Entry 0 Partition 4997nMB FAT-32 Data Partition 1796 MB FAT-32 MBR Entry 1 Partition 2793 MB Extended System_S Volume 2793 MB FAT-32 I had thought I understood that the Compaq Recovery Discs would reformat my computer and restore to a Factory level. Obviously not so. I'm ready to start over but this time I need a little more guidance as to how to do it properly. Was I supposed to format C: and D: separately before starting? D0 I use the startup disk for this or should I use BootIt NG to format and wipe everything clean?     - AdAware SE Personal Build I just read the tail end of the recent thread regarding AdAware SE and would appreciate if someone wouldn't mind taking a few minutes more and clarifying this for me. My version of AdAware is SE1R210.27.12.2007. Any time I check for updates I'm told that I am up to date. A visit to the Lavasoft website explains that support for this version expired December 31, 2007 but that I should replace it with AdAware 2007. The problem is that 2007 requires Windows 2000 or better. Mike has explained to Heather that Lavasoft has fixed the problem with the dated definitions and that she can download new definitions for AdAware SE from the Lavasoft site. I do indeed see where the DOWNLOAD button is on the webpage that Mike referenced but Lavasoft is still saying that they no longer support AdAware SE. So the question is, did Lavasoft simply fix the issues related to dated definitions or is AdAware SE now back with full support. Given that this 'puter operates with Windows Me, it would appear to me that either SE remains supported otherwise I must uninstall it because I won't be able to run AdAware 2007. He may have inadvertently caused this problem from a windows tweak, but his computer now does not do an auto shut-down from the "start" menu, as it did before, but simply re-boots.     - System Restore has a CreateRestore option? I ask (again) because, IMHO, it doesn't make good sense for it not to and Andy Rathbone, in his books Windows Me for Dummies, describes System Restore as having a CreateRestore point as well as an option to select a prior creation. Our WinME computer, working pretty well for eight years now, has no such option or I sure as he!! can't find it.... Another peculiarity was, at first I could not get the Movie Maker to work with our Sony VX1000 camcorder. I got some support from MS which fixed that. And I found one of the Sony Blue Ray RW DVDs worked well with winME although Sony said it shouldn't. I think a lot of us have seen that kind of good news several times.     - Hotfixes and Updates for Me I have a six-year-old Dell with Windows Me that I would like to give to a friend or close acquaintance, but first I want to remove personal stuff like letters (no porn, nothing that shouldn't be seen by anybody, but of no business to others). I understand that the Format command will accomplish as much as I need, but Format will also remove the operating system (won't it?). I have all the CDs that came with this machine when I bought it new, so I ought to be able to restore Windows Me.     - New Computer, ME incompatable, XP is only upgrade In Microsofts great wisdom, they made the XP professional upgrade require windows already be installed. I have a new computer so it started without windows. Not knowing a way around the problem, I installed (or at least tried to) Windows ME. It halts due to a lack of compatable drivers. Restart it and it comes up without the CD (actually DVD) drive. Yes the drive works, its the one Windows ME was installed from.     - Registry Defragmenters Hello: There have been a few threads recently on the use of registry cleaners. While some people like them and have not had any bad experiences with them, the consensus seems to be that such tools should be avoided by inexperienced users. I have also seen registry defragmenter utilities available, both as part of commercial software, as well as shareware and freeware. Does the advice to avoid registry cleaners also apply to registry defragmenters - that is to avoid them? Is it best simply to not touch the registry (other than using a tool like System Restore)?     - Help, my System Restore has no Create a Restore Point option..(NDE). Help, my WinME System Restore has no 'Create a Restore Point' option... I know this is incredibly late to notice but it is true. I see no option to (manually) create a Restore Point. I do get "automatic" creation of restore points usually once a day, occasionally twice, occasionally none. I thought that was a bit odd but it has "worked" for me so far. In thelast 3 months I have used Restore points 3 or 4 times to recover from odd ball system (Near Death Experience) behavior I finally got to checking Andy Rathbone's Microsoft Windows Me For DUMMIES, both volumes, and it is pretty clear that I should. In the first 5 or more years I've been using this computer I rarely if at all (deliberately) used it. Now I find it indispensable and I would like more control over the making and deleting of my Restore Points. Anybody heard of this problem? Is this fixable with just editing the registry?     - Problem reinstalling winME Is there something about installing winME that causes it to freeze exactly 10% in to the Copy Files portion of the install. Or is it my harddrive, and what should I do about it? I banged my IBM Thjnkpad 600E laptop really hard, and winME won't start anymore, but DOS will, from a rescue disk**. Whether I should have or not, I ran DOS scandisk for many hours, and until today, kept finding 1 or 2 or 8 clusters that scandisk disabled, although for the last few passes, they were just clusters that it thought ran slow and it expected to fail soon. During all of this, I used a recovery disk to start DOS, and on about 5 occasions then used a legitimate ME update CD to try to install ME. Everything went fine during the install until the middle of the Copy Files portion, and then every time, always at the 10% mark, TEN percent, the install freezes. The CD light goes off but the HD light stays on, without blinking at all, and I can even hear the sound of the hard drive, buzz for 2 seconds, silence for two seconds (three times) then silent for 5 seconds and start again. The buzz is more like a boozz. :) The only way to stop this is to turn off the computer. Other than running scandisk, which each time marks a few clusters not to be used, except this last time when it found none to complain about, i haven't used the laptop for anything, so maybe there is a bad spot on the HD that scandisk can't find??? and maybe the install gets to the same bad spot always somewhere in the 10% portion of copy files. Does that seem likely? Should I delete some files I can do without, so that there will be more good space, and then I might see it not freeze until 15 or 20%? but how can I make sure the OS stores files on this newly available space, instead of where it is storing them now? What can I do? **Wouldn't it be better in this situation if winME provided a method to start DOS without a rescue disk, straight from the hard drive? That's how win3.1, 95 and 98 worked. Is there a way to run scandisk @ startup before the Windows GUI is
loaded (like in Windows 95 or 98)?

Yes, by booting from a floppy. You might however be interested in
ScanDefrag (http://www.blueorbsoft.com/scandefrag/) which allows both
scandisk and defrag to be run in much the way you want.

Whenever I try to add anything or even "SCANDISK C: /CUSTOM" to
autoexec.bat, everything I added gets deleted; How can I override this
then?

So you chose to ignore my previous suggestion to look at scandefrag. OK,
that's your choice entirely as it is mine as I don't use it either but
then I don't have any problems running either scandisk or defrag. However
what you cannot ignore and that you have now discovered is that Win Me
doesn't use the autoexec.bat file which is retained solely for backwards
compatibility. This isn't strictly true because Win Me does process the
contents of autoexec.bat but on shutdown, rather that at start up,
transferring any SET environment variable entries it finds to the registry
for use in the next session.

Your options are to either run scandisk from a boot floppy, use scandefrag
or boot to Safe Mode and run it from there.
