    - Windows explorer trying to access internet - repost Sorry, a repost because of slight error in IP code. Lately when I start windows Me I get a request via ZoneAlarm to allow Windows Explorer to access the internet. The IP quoted is IP.239.255.255.250. Is this legit? Also AVG has started to crash out to the 'blue screen' before completing (a convenient way of avoiding reporting a virus). Is AVG (database 475) suspect? I've used google on the IP address and there are a number of people asking what this IP is all about. Unfortuneately most of the posts are not in English so I can only read a few and they are very technical. All I can make out is that the IP is based in California.     - New HDD and OS I am fitting a new hard disk to my PC as a replacement for the original. I wish to run win ME. The PC is an HP Pavilion and came with a Win 98 'recovery' cd. Along the way I have upgraded to Win ME with a non-OEM Win ME 'upgrade' CD. I have all the necessary product keys and documentaion still with both cd's. The product ID for the 98 cd includes the string - OEM-. My question is .... can I load ME directly onto the new HDD, and use the 'recovery' cd as proof of purchase ? OR, do I have to load Win 98, then upgrade to Win ME, and will 98 load direct from the 'recovery' cd onto a completely bare HDD ? I could ghost an image of my current HDD and simply swap drives, but I would prefer a fresh start as the PC has already done 4 years on 98 without a reformat or reload and I keep hearing that Win98 registry will be in a dismal way.     - What is this character...? What is this character and how do you type it in DOS...? >> £ << I downloaded a game tonite, didn't like it, and tried to delete it. It wasn't a standard install, and had no uninstall...you just delete the folder. (OK it was a cracked game with no install...just an unpack...please...no lectures...just help please...) While trying to empty the recycle bin, it said it couldn't find some weird named file, and wouldn't let me empty it. I went into the game folder, and started deleting folders one by one. I got to a folder with what appeared to be some sort of texture files, with a crapload of 'em in there. They looked like they had the same sort of name as what the recycle bin wouldn't delete. So I started deleting them, column by column...one by one... till I got to two of them that just won't delete. When I try to delete them, move them, rename them, change the properties...I get this error message... "Cannot Delete File Windows is unable to find the file. This item might have already been deleted or moved. Press F5 to refresh the view of this folder." I refreshed, rebooted, rebooted and tried in safemode... Ran my antivirus and adware/spyware progs... NOTHING makes these two files go away, and windows is saying it can find them... WTF...??? So I did some reaserch on the net, and I read that you need to delete it in DOS. I don't know DOS...but seem to remember this happening a few yrs. ago, and someone talking me thru a "deltree" (?) in DOS. So I got like C:>DEL Foldername\filename.extension... but the filename has that damned weird symbol/character typed above in it's name that I don't know how to type.     - Hangs - among other things! I have had Windows ME since it came out and I still strugle to get it working. I am constantly having the programs hang, and error messages, .dll messages, programs will close in the middle of them. Is there someone who knows how to check what is wrong? I have tried to reinstall the software completely, and installed all of the updates, but it still has not helped. I even purchaed a program to check the registry (which found several problems) but it is still having the same problems. I have McAfee (Online update)installed, Office XP installed and am afraid to install anyhing else back on until I can get this issue resolved!     - Help! Bad Computer Problem I click Word and I get the message: System busy or has become unstable. You can wait and see if it becomes available again or restart your machine. I can do nothing except pull the plug as it freezes up, at this point. I have put the Word CD back in, ran repair and also reinstalled. Nothing works.     - Formatting Hard Drive I am having multiple problems that I can't pin down to a specific cause and would like to start from scratch, but I can't even figure out how to format my C drive.     - AOL 9.0 issue I dont like QuickTime as I feel it takes over your PC and interferes with other media systems. AOL have it as an automatic feature on AOL 9.0 so I have got rid of all QuickTime on my PC and now every time I go on AOL I get a reminder pop up to say I dont have QuickTime and would I like to install it?     - OE fragmenting Sent messages When I try to send a 1.5 MB video clip as an attachment using OE6 the Send/Receive box then tells me that the clip has been broken into 56 seperate messages which are being sent consecutively.So my recipient ends to with seperate 56 emails from me and doesn't know what to do with them.Apart from the obvious does anyone have any idea what I can do to correct this?     - Password problem A friend of mine is running Windows ME and all of a sudden for some unknown reason whenever he starts his computer a box pops on the screen asking for his password. He has this computer for about 2 years and it just started doing this several weeks ago. You don't have to put a password in you can just click on cancel and windows will load.     - OE errors and can't boot Win ME Am troubleshooting my parent's computer. It will not boot, not even into safe mode. I can boot with Norton emergency disk but only to Norton's menu, checked for virus but nada. Can get a blue screen - various error messages one of which is: OE:0187:BFF8E64B also kernal32.dll has popped up in some messages as well as msgsrv32. My brother was downloading who knows what when it crashed. I can get it to DOS after booting with Norton antivirus emergency disk but can't remember enough DOS language to then try to get to back to Windows from DOS (it's been many years.....)     - kernel32.dll and blue screen problems I'm having three problems that might be related, and I hope someone can tell me what to do. First, I'm frequently getting a windows dialog box that says "Psinfo has caused an error in kernel32.dll. Psinfo will now close." That in itself doesn't seem to cause any other problem. Second, I am frequently getting a full-screen popup ad for Winantivirus. The only way to get rid of it is with Ctrl-Alt-Del. Third, I'm getting a dreaded blue screen more and more often with the following error message: "VWIN32(05) + 00002065 Error: 0E : 0028 : C0287E95". With that my computer freezes completely and I have to power off. The shutdown blows out my virus scan (McAfee) which I then have to download again in order to restore. In addition to McAfee Virus Scan I'm also running Panicware Popup Stopper (free edition) and Lavasoft Ad- Watch. But these problems occur whether or not I have the Popup Stopper or the Ad-Watch on.     - FaultLog Through days of reading these user group messages, I was made aware of the FaultLog. Does anybody know how to use it to find the causes of the errors? It's all Greek to me!     - MSGSRV32 I am starting to get a lot of this MSGSRV32 not responding errors. Either the computer freezes up or when we shut down the computer hangs. Also when leaving yahoo games er many times are getting a iexplorer error. Some times a box comes up to click here to send the error to Microsoft. Today I tried to update windows and it did some of them but then one for the mmaestro (mouse driver update) downloaded fine but wouldn't install.     - Send To issue I recently moved my unzipped folders to a new location. There are many short cuts to these unzipped programs in Start Menu~Program. Some programs find the new location on their own others didn't. Is there any simple way to add these items to their respected sub-folder of Program (Start Menu) rather than adding one by one using Start Menu properties Add feature? I tried making a shortcut of Program (Start Menu) in Send To but there are no sub menus shown in pop up (after r-click on file). Moreover it transfers the whole program rather than creating a shortcut.     - debugging win me freeze I've been trying to install a VPN client on my Dell laptop running Windows ME. The first try involved installing the VPN client available via the Win ME Windows Setup (Add/Remove Programs, Window Setup tab). This appeared to work but then my laptop froze when I rebooted. Stepping my way thru the boot process showed my PC froze on msmouse.vsd. So I hunted around for another VPN client, assuming something was bad with the ME VPN client. I found another VPN client from somebody called Check Point. However, when I downloaded and installed this VPN client I had exactly the same problem with my laptop freezing on msmouse.vxd when I rebooted. So it would seem I have a basic interaction problem/conflict with VPN and msmouse.vxd. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to go about debugging this problem/conflict?     - Windows Protection Error Hello, Recently, I was on the internet and all of a sudden my computer froze. When I turned it back on, I got the following error: a "blue screen of death" that reads: " Windows protection error. You need to restart your computer. System halted. Thorough is very slow - it's thorough. If it was much faster it wouldn't be
thorough. But why do you need to do a thorough scan?
