    - pop-up adds I have recently install a 30 day trial version of trend micro. After I install it I started getting all kinds of pop-ups. I have a router for my internet, and I'm running windows ME. I have uninstalled trend mircro and I have been running ad-aware (many times) to clean up.     - OE6 and Blocked Attachments I have received this from one of our Senior Club Members, can anyone assist please? Hi Joe A problem with recently installed Outlook Express 6. I find " jpg " attachments being blocked as being a potential virus. Why jpg I don't know as I thought these to be relatively safe. The attachment bar is removed from the e-mail and a yellow bar appears on the top with the message " OE removed access to the following attachment in your mail ........... ....... jpg " This can be bypassed by going to Tools - Options - Security, and remove the check from "Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened that could be a potential virus " Possibly as a temporary measure. I also found that if Forward is selected for an e-mail with a blocked attachment the attachment can be opened.( Apparently OK to forward a potential virus ) Looking for a permanent solution to remove jpg files from the list I found Microsoft Knowledge Base Article 291387. a section of this dealing with unsafe file lists is attached, a jpg, hope you can open it.     - Windows ME blue screen shutdown error Hi, I'm having problems shutting down windows... every time i do I get a blue screen with the following error message: An exception 0D has occurred at 0028:00000003 in VxD ---. This was called from 0028:C002F285 in VxD ---. It may be possible to continue normally. Then the usual options. If I try to continue, a black screen with flashing cursor appears and the PC won't shut down. This is a new problem, and didn't happen prior to around a week ago. Nothing has changed on the PC to precipitate the problem, and it occurs on every shutdown. I have searched the knowledge base and it contains no error messages for "VxD ---". Any ideas? Thanks.     - Help Error Message #2147143678 I get Help Center Failed,with the above #2147143678 and advised to contact Microsoft..lol...I did look in the Knowledge Base and found some stuff on the web and I tried almost all the solutions, but it still will not open. I did have 2 trojans and some adware. Uninstalled Norton System Works(2002) and installed newer version of Norton Anti-Virus.(2004) updated. But I'm guessing I knocked out an initiating file?     - I deleted the windows\system\vmm32.vxd file and can't resore it I deleted the windows\system\vmm32.vxd file and can't resore it. I have tried to get to DOS mode but can't. I have tried to copy the file from A: prompt, but it will not change drives. It shows c> but if you type anything in it comes back with the same error the file: (whatever you have typed) is corrupt or missing and it wants to know where to find the windows loader for this file. I have tried typing a: and enter, A:> and enter, SCANDISK and enter, and just about anything else you can think of but it does not go away from the c>. I have the boot and setup disks but The error comes up before the computer starts the disk. I keep switching between my computers, going online to try to get ideas and then going back to the broken one but even though this seems to be a common problem I can't anything that works.     - EZ Armor & Update of EZ Trust...... Forgot to tell you......there is a new build of EZ Trust Antivirus......6.3.0.9 is the version number. I was talking to CA and they forgot to send out a notification to their users.....which did not impress me. And I asked a few more questions about EZ Armor because I finally found a way to download the free Microsoft version. There were some glitches before because I was a paying customer of the AV program. Earlier, I could not have d/l'ed it. The bit where one clicks as a *present customer* would not work, so I got it somehow from their website. They told me that they have fixed up their abominably slow website and yes...I checked it out and they have. ****They told me that the free firewall is *Zone Alarm PRO 4.5* (not a 3.xxx one) that is included in the freebie......and once this AV is up for renewal in 10 days, I will switch to that.**** I have to say that dealing with their tech support is a pleasure.....they are always nice and do get back to you. This took 24 hours. Just keeping you up to date on EZ Trust/Armor. I have used it for at least 4 years and have absolutely no complaints.     - Autodown Error in KRNL386.EXE Got a really strange error...... "Autodown caused an error in KRNL386.EXE and will close my browser"......everything froze. There were lost file fragments, which happens, on reboot. A strange thing I have noticed in the past few weeks is for instance, when I use Google on my home page, the Search box at the top of IE indents as if I clicked on it......and when I rebooted tonight, a Zone Alarm box appeared briefly in my bottom bar. Almost like watching a *player piano* doing these things on their own.....can't explain it any better at 1 am. Bear in mind that my ISP has joined up with Yahoo and it is a real mishmash at the moment. I have been back and forth with them due to my old bugbear about the Yahoo Toolbar mucking up WinME. Apparently they are also having problems with WinME and Parental Controls. This tech knows what she is talking about and she advised against downloading their software.....which I wouldn't have done anyway. The toolbar is in there, I assume. They have been touting this "self-healing software" for a while now.....I don't want it near this computer, grin!! I will *heal myself*.     - scandisk & defrag Hi all, How many of you ran scan disk, then defrag on your comp. After the defrag is done, you reboot to find non-system disk error? Running scan disk with a boot floppy, comes up with tons of errors. Using a USB cradle, I was able to access the drive and backup the important data. Unfortunately, I don`t have an official ME install CD, just the recovery CD`s, so I couldn`t do a repair. Seems the MBR and few other things got screwed up.     - MacFee - how can you completely remove? I have a friend who bought a Compaq (Windows ME)with MacAfee Virus program installed - she has recently purchase a Norton Professional and when we went to install it, we first tried to uninstall MacFee and the uninstall failed - several times. We tried to install Norton and it hangs up = you can force it to run a virus scan etc., but it is not functioning properly and I am thinking it may be bumping into fragments of McAfee here and there. Any thoughts on how I can get MacFee completely off and/or why Norton does not install properly. Also, would installing XP possibly help with this scenario?     - Overlarge Restore Archive Directory There is a problem with my System Restore. Since I reinstalled Windows ME on 08/04/03, I can only get a restore by using <Start-Run-msconfig-Launch System Restore>, which is tolerable. What is not tolerable is <C:\restore\archive> is filling up with 11 Mb cabinet files. The archive is now 3.65 Gb and growing every day. I have set System Restore Disk Space Use under File System Properties at 1032 Mb. This setting has no effect. I cannot delete any of the cabinet files. I get a message that says "Cannot delete RGxxxxxxxxx. Access Denied. Source File May Be in Use."     - Folders won't open About 5 days ago, my folders quit opening. I can open "documents" from the desktop, but then double clicking or right clicking and selecting "open" only produces the "open with..." dialog box. Just scanned with yesterday's norton update, am virus free, with the recent removal of "istinstall_s-.exe" trojan. Problem still occurs when I boot computer in safe mode, hence, nothing running to conflict. Fortunately the I can "explore" folders. Also, "view" menu has changed in a folder window.     - Installing New Software in WinME - New DLL files not updated I am installing a piece of software called Inspect-it. There are 5 *.dll files that are newer than theones I currently have on my machine. I am instructed to re-boot before proceeding with the install. I so this and when the machine starts back up I see the message stating that windows is updating files. The files never get updated and the install doesn't continue.     - How to instruct windows to display 2 browser output to 2 screens ? Hi, My notebook computer has one SVGA output port to allow outputting video to another SVGA monitor. Under control panel, monitor content tab, windows ME allows me the option to choose extending this window desktop to another monitor or not. If I not highlight this option, both monitor (notebook LCD & extended SVGA monitor) will show the same image. If I highlight this option, the extended SVGA monitor just display the background wallpaper although I can drag the mouse monitor between the 2 screens.     - Start Over I have Windows ME on my machine now. I was wondering if there is a way to erase everything on the hard drive and start over with a new version of Windows, or maybe just put ME back on. The computer runs slow and things don't work right.     - 2 problems - probably related When booting and getting into WinMe, I get a caution message box saying that an "IU.DLL" file is missing - of course it doesn't say which one or what it belongs to. Clicking O.K., everything seems to be working normally. Then I go to MSCONFIG and select Diagnostic Startup - interactively load Device drivers, etc. to try and determine which program is causing the problem (starting in Safe Mode the problem does not appear). Upon reboot get a System Error box saying System halted and that file "VSDATA95.VXD" is missing (or causing problems). The file is there in Windows\System folder. I have used Backed-up files where I know everything was O.K., but still get the message. Just restoring the VSDATA95.VXD file didn't solve it, Then Restored back several days using a Backup and still didn't solve problem. Does anyone know of any programs or whatever which uses the VS.... files whereby I may be able to delete the program and boot with no errors - then possibly re-install program if needed?     - hshtml.dll problems with IE 6 Hi all! I don?t know if my question has been asked and answered already, either ways I?d appreciate any suggestion on solving it. Everytime I try to see a website that turns out to be non-existent (or type in the wrong web address by mistake) I get an error with MSHTML.dll that requires me to restart internet explorer. It?s IE 6.0.2800.1106 I downloaded the IE 6 SP1 about 3 times already and that didn?t solve the problem. I found an article on microsoft support that suggested re-extraction of the mshtml.dll from ie_1.cab, but there is no ie_1.cab in the windows update setup files folder. I re-extracted all the .cab files there were in the folder and found MSHTML.dll in IEMIL_2.cab, but system configuration would not let me replace the old MSHTML.dll. I?m just plain confused now.... Reboot. If your machine is booting into Safe Mode on it's own, follow the
troubleshooting steps offered. Post back with any questions and details of
indications.

Click on Start, ShutDown and then Restart.....windows will come back up.

Are you sure that it really is in Safe Mode? It *may* just be the wrong
screen resolution.

Does it say 'Safe Mode' in each corner of the display?

If you are sure that it is in Safe Mode, what happens when you shut-down and
re-boot?

Does it automatically run Scandisk?
Does it then attempt to start in Normal Mode?

Have you got the 'Enable Startup Menu' box set in msconfig? Run
msconfig.exe and on the General tab, select Advanced and uncheck the 'Enable
Startup Menu' box.

If only (very) recent, have you tried running System Restore?
