I was having trouble defragging because something was
hitting the hard drive, so I decided to boot my laptop in
Safe mode. When I used the f8 key to go to safe mode, the
blank desktop loaded, then the system hung. CTl/alt/del
produced a completely blank task manager screen. I hit
restart and a completely blank "this program is not
responding" button comes up.

Once, instead of hanging it gave me the "error in
explorer.exe you must reinstall windows" screen. The
system boots and runs in normal mode.

Try hitting the F5 key.

I can get into safe mode, it comes up with the safe mode
screen, but hangs with a completely blank desktop. Task
manager is empty. Have to power down to recover.
