    - Address Book Each time I make a change to Address Book (c:\program files\outlook express\wab.exe\ Version 6.0.2800.1123)and then exit, an icon is written to the desktop whose target is a file, c:\windows\desktop\~\. This icon is written immediately after the address book window closes. The file, ~ , is written and is on the desktop. If you examine this file with notepad, it appears to hold a copy of the information in my address book. Scanning the file with a virus checker yields "No Virus Present". This file appears to be written at various other times like re- starts, etc. I've deleted this file on many instances but it keeps re-appearing. New versions are written each time address book is altered. I would appreciate any info on what this is - what it is part of - why it is present - why it exists.... any of these!!!!     - Recycle Bin trouble Someone please help, when I delete anything it doesn't go to the the recycle bin. It goes to the recycled folder in my Nero software and never even shows in the Recycle bin? The manual checkpoint creation and restoration works fine without any problems. Where does the system restore program reside for automatic activation? I don't see it the Scheduled Tasks in the Control Panel pane.     - File Sharing I have a Wintel ME pc connected via serial cable to a WINTEL XP/Pro. I want to transfer files from the ME to the XP. I've enabled file sharing and created a file share on the ME for the folder I want the XP to have access to on the ME. I've used the setup wizard on the XP to set the XP as a guest of the ME pc using serial cable. When I go to use the connection from the XP it indicates it is dialing and then error 777, connection attempt failed because modem or other connecting device on the remote computer is out of order.     - System slow down Running ME, I can just leave the CPU on and the system slows to a crawl and finally freezes, this make take several hours. One game I play (Strategic Command) seems to hasten this effect, after exiting the game. The mouse pointer hesitates, sounds are slow, all functions (internet connections) degenerate. This happened after a reconfiguration of the HD and subsequent reloading of software and OS.     - Can't update directx. I recently bought MS Flight Simulator 2002 to install on my HP 6835 running Windows ME. After installing the program and attempting to start Flight Simulator I got the message "Flight Simulator requires DX8a or above. Please reinstall Flight Simulator." I installed DirectX from the disc and when it prompted me to restart my computer I did so, however, windows hung-up during the start with the message "Windows could not upgrade the file %1 from %2 %1: %2." After awhile the computer started up normally however I was still getting the error message from Flight Simulator. I then attempted to download DirectX 9 from the Microsoft web page, but got the same results when restarting. I then went to the Micrsoft Knowlege Base and found Article 283069 which told me to search for wininit.ini and then rename it wininit.old.     - Reinstalling Windows and IE6 One of my computers(P4/1.7Ghz/256MB) running WinME and IE6/OE6-all up-to-date- was experiencing a considerable number of applications causing multiple errors in <unknown> that I decided to re-install Windows by overwriting from the CD.I've done it before,no problem.This time all went well except I was 'unable to install Java Packages from C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\dajava.cab.     - system resources I have a network with 14 computers on it. 2 run 98se 10 run me and 2 are xp home. When I added the xphome I started having errors on most all the other systems. The error say (in one way or another) that the system resources are very low. These systems are basic systems whith terminal type use. We have and use a server so disk space isnt an issue and each unit has at least 256 megs of ram and every unit is at least a p2 300. I never had the issues till I added xp home. Been trying to install select popular games (all from different manufacturers (Medal of Honor, NOLF2, etc) and setup process freezes or never even starts...every time. I just bought Windows XP upgrade and the same thing...blue screen, setup freezes, and I get Disc Write Error. No every program I try to install freezes...some will install (GTA 3 for example). I checked into hard drive via manufacturer and HD checks out fine. Scan disc, same thing. My computer has been freezing up a lot lately. I don't want to scrub my system and start again from scratch (because I would have a hell of a time reinstalling my video and audio drivers), so...any advice?
