I want to reinstall Device Manager itself (WinME)
Hello,
Many months ago I lost use of my sound card (Device Manager shows the yellow
exclamation mark). I also found that everytime I boot up, my USB mouse won't
work unless I remove it from Device Manager, then unplug and re-insert it.
Also SCSI controllers have yellow exclamation marks and can no longer be
used. Unfortunately I don't have a restore point to go back to, and
reinstalling Windows ME is not an option for me.
I know it's not a problem with the hardware, because it's a dual-boot system
and under the WindowsXP disk everything works fine.
I also know it's not a problem with individual drivers being corrupted,
because even new devices I install also appear with yellow exclamation marks
(including a software based virtual CD drive).
It seems the system files behind Device Manager may themselves be corrupted.
I work in tech support for a cable ISP and find it very common for Win98/ME
customers to lose the ability to connect their modems via USB, so I'm a
little bit familiar with this type of issue (one of the very few problems we
don't have a solution for).
So I would like to try restoring the systems files responsible for Device
Manager, using the MSConfig "Extract File" facility. Can anyone suggest a
list of appropriate files to restore, or point me in the right direction for
locating such a list?
Thanks. Tag: runtime error 429 Tag: 282228
Where does Windows 2000 and XP keep its information about country/region
Hello,
Where does Windows 98, 98 SE, and Me store their country/region and
language datas in their registries? I am not having luck in determining
what keys have these information.
At first, I thought it was HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control
Panel\International\ with Locale, but I don't think this it. Basically,
I just need to check the country/region and language what Windows is
using via a software checker. This is for both English and localized
operating systems.
Thank you in advance. :)

Strange formatting issue - anybody know what's going on?
I bought a used P4 and I have Win ME, so I formatted the hard drive
(both C and D, in this case), and then began the ME installation
process. Once it got to the point where it said to restart and remove
the floppy, it restarted but there was a message, and it just freezes
up. I can get back to the startup disk and run install again, but the
same thing happens over and over again. Nothing I've tried works. Any
thoughts on what could be causing this?
Thanks in advance. Tag: runtime error 429 Tag: 282187
Many thanks to all
I would just like to say a big thank you to every body who has helped me over
the past years with ME.
I can confirm that ME is not an 'unstable system' and it's beeen been an
enjoyable time using it.
My most particular thanks go to Mike Maltby & Noel Paton, and as you'll
probably aggree they are sh*t hot when it come to problem solving.
Anyway, ME users, I hate to lose u but I 've just got a brand spanking new
machine using XP. : ^ (
I'll drop by though, to see what your all discussin.... ; ^ )
Many thanks... and kindest Regards...

Password Protecting Windows ME
I have seen my question posted before but have not seen any
satisfactory answers so far.
I have Windows ME on a GenuineIntel Pentium III processor.
I would like to password protect my PC but ME has this ingenious idea
that, when Windows in password protected, a log-in window come up and
the user has the choice of either entering the user name or password or
simply clicking Cancel. (Is that great protection or what! I hope MS
doesn't provide software to my bank or to airport security.)
I saw someone suggest going to "My Network Places", choosing Properties
and setting the "Primary Network Login" to "Windows Logon". No
difference.
I then tried password protection using BIOS. It doesn't stop Windows
starting up but asks for a password to get into BIOS and doesn't accept
the password I have for Windows.
Two questions.
1/ Can anyone tell me if there is any way to actually password protect
Windows ME or do I need to get another OS?
2/ Can anyone tell me how I can now access BIOS?
Many thanks in advance,
Peter. Tag: runtime error 429 Tag: 282122

Can't reinstall failed critical update with microsoft update
Dear Everyone,
I ran a check on my computer with Belarc Advisor. According to Belarc,
Microsoft security hotfix 329115 failed on my computer, and I need to
reinstall it. Following the link provided led me to security bulletin
MS02-050. I discovered that said security update, to fix a Certificate
validation flaw which might permit identity spoofing, does indeed apply to
Windows ME. But when I clicked the link to do this, it simply led to the
automated Microsoft update page, which does not seem to be of the opinion
that I need any critical updates.
My guess is that the automated update views the update as installed properly
and working, whereas Belarc detects that it's a failed update.
What do I do? Should I assume (contrary to my suspicions) that the automated
update is more reliable than Belarc, and forget about it?
Sensible would seem to be to redo the update manually, which at any rate
shouldn't do any harm. Except--how would I do it? Haven't the foggiest. The
microsoft security bulletin just tells you to click a link leading you to the
automated update page.
I have Windows ME because the base computer is a 200MMX, which can't handle
a more modern operating system.
Help, please.

The 25 worst tech products of all time
Hello!
http://www.webwereld.nl/articles/41338/the-25-worst-tech-products-of-all-time.html
4. Microsoft Windows Millennium (2000)
This might be the worst version of Windows ever released--or, at least, since the dark days of Windows 2.0. Windows Millennium
Edition (aka Me, or the Mistake Edition) was Microsoft's follow-up to Windows 98 SE for home users. Shortly after Me appeared in
late 2000, users reported problems installing it, getting it to run, getting it to work with other hardware or software, and getting
it to stop running. Aside from that, Me worked great.
To its credit, Me introduced features later made popular by Windows XP, such as system restore. Unfortunately, it could also restore
files you never wanted to see again, like viruses that you'd just deleted. Forget Y2K; this was the real millennium bug.
I don't agree! Besides since IE6 is on the list, then maybe XP (not XP.SP2) should be on the list!

Restore
I have had this problem before For some reason system restore writes large
files to the drive I suspect Norton turns on restore even though I have set
it to off. when I run a full scan. Then my free space on the drive drops
from say 900 megs to around 100.
Some guy named Mike had sent email with how to correct it and it worked and
had printed out the fix - now I can't find the print out - so - Help

I own a small business and unknowingly an X-employee planted a file

another one of my employees computers also working remotely (VPN) thru his

Stuck in Safe Mode
Hello. My computer boots up only in Safe Mode & the Help/Support file will
not open & reads: (void)
The Geek Squad informed me to remove a recently installed program, run
System Restore (which would not restore) to no avail. I was instructed to
download the files that I wanted to keep and get back to them on
re-installation of ME.
The problem is that i cannot access my files in safe mode. The CD burner is
inop in safe mode, the floppy A drive is not responding (or i am not handling
correctly) & the 2GIG flashdrive (Geek Squad said to use) does not work in
safe mode (a per manufacturer).
Are there any step-by-step suggestions on how I can retirieve my files in
Safe Mode? Any step-by-step suggestions how I might get out of Safe Mode?
I have a Dell installed ME OS, desktop.
Called Dell and they do not carry ME product available anymore, nor the
support.
Found: http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm, for a posible boot disk.
your help is truly appreciated.

Shut Down Problem
Windows ME 4.9.3000
Lately my computer refuses to shut down properly. When I try to shut
down I encounter the following activity:
1. The screen goes dim and nothing else happens.
2. I do CTRL-ALT-DEL and get a Blue Screen with the notice about the
system waiting.
3. I press RETURN to go back to the Desktop and nothing happens.
4. At that point the system is completely frozen and I have to turn
off the power.
Any ideas about how I can fix this will be appreciated

A Little Help?
Hi,
I've found out that I had a recent intruder on my comp who created some
folders and flooded it with files and I managed to run various ant-virus
progs etc to delete all the crap he put on. Everything except a 70kb pic
that won't open, delete, or do anything. I can't even access the properties
on it.
Some people I've asked have told me to forget about it since it's apparently
harmless, but I still find it unnerving.
Any suggestions? Tag: runtime error 429 Tag: 281940
help....
I need some help. I am running windows me.. I have a program which was
working fine until the latest automatic update. Now it will not start.
I called the program maker and they told me to use regsvr32 "C:\program
files\common files\system\ole db\oledb32.dll and
regsvr32 "C:\program files\common
files\system\ado\msado15.dll and they come back as errors
Load Library("C:\program files")failed- One of the library files needed
to run this application can not be found.
This program worked fine before. Microsoft says it is the new Mdac 2.8
that is not registering the files correctly..
Anyone have any ideas as to what to do about this? I have tried
everything I can think of.

Help with USB please
Hi all
My daughter has an HP PC with ME. I am unfamiliar with ME.
Her problem is that she can't read anything which we try plugging
into either of her two USB drives. HOWEVER...the device manager
shows the device is working properly AND we get the little Icon
on the tool bar that shows to select when you want to "Safely remove"
a device. So the PC KNOWS that there is something there. IN FACT,
for example, when I plug in a Lexar Jumpdrive, the little icon even
shows it's a Lexar Jumpdrive. The problem then is that a window doesn't
pop-up like with XP that shows the device (like in My Computer) so you
can write to the Jumpdrive or read files. In other words, how do you
get the device to show up in the "My computer" box so you can access it ?
Thank you SO SO much.

Windows defragger concerns in WinMe
Hi
I've been using Diskeeper Lite for some time on my WinMe machine
primarily because the Windows defragger refuses to run except in Safe
Mode. (In any case, I understand that the Windows defragger is merely a
watered-down version of Diskeeper).
Yesterday, I installed ScanDefrag and ran it. When it got to its third
stage, the defragger refused to run complaining that there was evidence
of disk damage which should be cleared up by running ScanDisk.
However, as my computer had just emerged from a 9 hour (apparently
sucessful) ScanDisk session as part of the ScanDefragger program, this
recommendation was somewhat startling.
Although I'm not very concerned about the non-operation of the Windows
defragger as I use Diskeeper, I'm wondering is the problem a little
deeper.
Can anybody help me to know whether I should worry about this and, if
so, what can I do about it?
TIA

No more 'support' for Windows ME ?
I thought I read something that said Microsoft was going to discontinue
support for WinME. I'm not sure what that means. Does it mean they won't
be writing any more security patches, won't help write drivers for new
devices, won't offer any downloads and updates? Has anybody here heard
anything about M$ going to stop supporting Windows ME? Tag: runtime error 429 Tag: 281784
Hardware Profiles for 2 graphics cards
I've heard that some people have two graphics cards in their PC. How do
they select which one is operable and also prevent the two interfering with
each other?
I have an AGP graphics card in this PC (running WinME) and I have a PCI
graphics card I want to put in and do some tinkering and comparisons. This
is an old 500 Mhz PIII computer. The BIOS setup allows me to selectively
enable/disable devices (such as a graphics card), but I also need to tell
WinME which drivers to load and which not to load when it starts up. I've
done things like that before using different Hardware Profiles in Windows98
(but I've never had two graphics cards in the same PC before). With the two
HW profiles I could select which profile got used by having two sections in
the CONFIG.SYS file with names that corresponded to the names of the HW
Profiles. That way I got a boot menu that listed the two HW profiles to
choose from. Windows98 was designed to work that way. That was before
WinME. WinME doesn't allow you to customize CONFIG.SYS - so the boot menu
thing isn't available.
MY QUESTION: Has anyone here used HW profiles to make Windows choose
between graphics cards? Do you have any tips or suggestions on the subject?
Also, is there a way I can get some kind of boot menu where I can choose
between the different HW profiles? Tag: runtime error 429 Tag: 281777

Intermittent Dial-Up connection problems
Hi
Using a 30-month old 1.8GHz/256MB RAM machine running on WinME with
Dial-Up internet connection.
Starting to have problems establishing a dial-up connection which the
ISP claims is not of their making.
What happens is that the modem repeatedly fails to make a connection
giving predominantly messages suggestion that the "line is busy" or "no
answer".
This failure to connect can persist for up to 100 attempts during which
the machine has been rebooted several times.
I have also found that trying a second ISP when the first has problems
leads to exactly the same difficulties (which seems to agree with the
view that it is not an ISP problem).
The problem can, and usually does, go away as inexplicably as it
arrived without having done anything to fix it (other than the
occasional reboot).
Can anybody suggest whether this is more likely to be a winsock32 or
.vxd file problem rather than an indication that the modem is on the
way out?
TIA

? regarding speed ME versus XP
For nine months now I have been using WinXP Home SP2 on a Sony home computer. For about five years
been using WinME on the other.
My XP runs on a 3 Ghz Pentium 4. My ME runs on an 800Mhz Pentium 3. Here is the puzzler - benchmarks
show the P4 running at least 3 times faster than the P3. But in opening any program the time to open
is almost identical. For PSP it is around 13 to 14 seconds for each. Same for Photo Impact (another
graphics program). Once they are open the P4 again outpaces the P3 by a goodly amount.
My question is - is this normal? Or has Sony loaded so much of their stuff on the computer that
this slows it down in opening programs? I have gone into WinCfg and had it load only the basic
stuff, but doesn't seem to speed up the opening of programs any at all.

ScanDefrag
i wrote to you last week and cannot find my original message re:scan disk and
defragmentr not completing their job. (with a baby and toddler and study
please forgive my delayed response). thankyou for your response. i did try
what you said, i.e. doanload a recommended scandefrag program file and let it
run. I still has the problem of not completing the scan the only good it did
was to inform me that i have 18 programs running!! (when ofcourse i have
closed everything). do my anti virus and error guard programs make up for
this many programs running or is something going on with my pc that i dont
know about?! it has a mind of its own lately. it is 'microsoft millenium me'
and since microsoft are wiping support for this product after july 11 do i
take it that maybe i just need to replace it? is that why i am having these
problems? or do i need a technitian to come and service my pc to stop those
18 programs running that prevent the 'scan disk' from completeing and hence
my 'defrag' unable to continue. I suppose what i am really asking is, Is my
PC doomed????or can you HELP ME!! Tag: runtime error 429 Tag: 281688

From one start to the next I lost the icon for my 'Direct CD' (Adaptec) =
in the Systray and with it the ability of the 'CDROM' drive to recognize =
its contents. The error message at start-up reads:
"CDRTC.DLL file cannot start.
Check the file to determine the problem."
I did check the file and it is there intact, as it seems.
Also the CDROM drive checks out ok. in Device Manager.
A System Restore and a "scanreg /restore" were not successful either. =
The other 'Easy CD Creator' icon is still present and active.
What could have triggered this and how can it be resolved?
Harry.

Windows Updates after a clean reinstall
I've recently done a clean reinstall of Windows ME on a Dell Dimension 4100
using a Dell reinstallation CD (PC and CD are six years old). I'm looking
for the least error-prone way of reinstalling the critical Windows updates.
I would prefer a procedure that can be used after Microsoft drops support
for Windows ME (this summer).
I have the Windows Update installation history for this PC. I also have a
recent Belarc listing of updates just prior to the clean reinstall. My
internet connection is dial-up (no broadband).
Reinstalling the updates would be easier if I had the Windows Security
Update CD. According to the Microsoft Order Desk, this CD is no longer
available.
There are two options I'm considering.
Option 1: On another PC, download the critical updates from the Windows
Update Catalog. Burn the updates to CD.
Option 2: Visit Windows Update and let it select the critical updates. After
updates are installed, take a disk image and burn to CD.
One question is common to both approaches. Should I first install WMP9 and
IE6 (or is IE6 itself an update?).
I started by trying to use Option 1 (Windows Update Catalog). The list of
critical updates from Windows Update Catalog is much shorter than my
installation history list. Many updates on my installation history are for
earlier versions of IE and WMP. However, I'm concerned that the list from
Windows Update Catalog may omit some needed updates. Also, there are a few
updates listed from Windows Update Catalog that are not on my installation
history.
IE6 does not appear on the list from Windows Update Catalog.
Has anyone yet posted the list and order of critical updates for a Windows
ME clean reinstall?
How shoud I proceed?
PS: Prior to posting this, I searched the web for recommendations. This
search included checking websites aumha.org, windowsreinstall.com, and
crashfixpc.com. From the archives of this newsgroup I viewed the thread
"Windows ME Update Order" posted in November 2005. Tag: runtime error 429 Tag: 281631

WinMe measures CPU usage TWICE..both different!
Hi
I've been puzzled for some time as to why the multitude of third-party
utilities that report CPU usage can be divided into two distinct
groups: those that report LOW values and those that report HIGH values.
(E.g. on my computer when lightly loaded, Process Explorer sees CPU
usage as typically 2-4% while FreeMeter gives it as 50-70%).
Now, I find that within Windows WinMe itself, two utilities are
available which report very dfferent CPU usage numbers. These are
WinTop (subtract the Idle usage from 100% to get the number that Task
Manager reports as CPU usage in the NT OSs) and System Monitor.
Is one more correct than the other or should a different significance
be associated with each?
TIA
