    - network failure Today I notice that my WinME (ICS host) and WinXP (client) can't communicate (simple peer to peer setup). First clue was when I couldn't send a print job from my ME to the XP where the printer is connected. XP pc reports "network unplugged". A forced "disable" and then an "enable" doesn't help. I also notice that the little lights for the network cards are not lit up. I thought they would normally BE lit up if the computers are on, right? However.. the lights on the network cards/ports on BOTH machines are off. Could both network cards have failed simulateously? Any ideas on what to do? I've since rebooted both machines in various order. No difference. The network is dead. The lack of network card lights concerns me, and puzzles me. Tag: runtime error 226 Tag: 269744

    - How can I fix my Blue Screen? I have been getting some blue screens this past few weeks. Just as i think i have sorted it (by uninstalling software), it comes back again. They all seem pretty similar. The last one said at the top of the screen... FILE_SYSTEM and at the bottom the stop error was 0x00000022 (0x000202EF,0x8266C900,0x8266C848,0x82E11A48) I have installed and uninstalled several types of software and so have no idea which it could be especially as the blue screens are random on startup (not everytime but generally after the computer has been off a while). I'm not prepared to try a hit and miss approach with uninstalling software as that can create problems in itself it would seem. I'm not a computer techy but i'm i'm not a computer dummy either. Can anyone help me fix this using laymans terms, i haven't got a clue when it comes to system registry and dumo files and the like.     - Dialup problem I wonder if someone could give me a hand? My son's ME machine has been giving problems and I've just reinstalled Windows following difficulties with CWS trojans, but I don't think this is related because it predates that. When you try to dialup, it won't connect, reporting 'no dial tone.' The line is fine and I can hear a dial tone if I connect a phone. Once the computer has failed to connect, the line is dead and people dialling in hear an engaged tone. The only way to clear it is to pull out the phone plug and reboot the machine. Then, on the phone, I can hear dialling tones (but this might be something to do with the NTL box I have). I can stop this by pulling out the NTL plug. Any ideas?     - Java Download--for Windows ME Hello: I presently have the Microsoft Version 1.1.4 of Java Technology. I'm told this is an older version. 1) How compatible is the 5.0 version from Java .com : http://www.java.com/en/download/download_the_latest.jsp with Windows ME? From there website, it seems it might be OK, but wondering how smoothly it would function with this OS.... 2) Is it necessary to uninstall anything prior to installing this?     - HELP : Can't make ".reg" file work ! Hi there, I had a problem with ActiveSync but managed to find an answer to the problem on the following Microsoft page :- http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;836152 I have followed the instructions on the Microsoft page to the letter ! I am using Windows ME and ActiveSync V3.8 Build 5004. The problem is when I click on the ".reg" file which I created, as it tells you to do in the instructions, (I called it "ActiveSync.reg") and say "Yes, add to registry", I then get the Error Message telling me :- "The specified file is not a registry file. You can only import registry files" The Icon for the file looks correct for a registry file (I have used this type of file before) ... any suggestions please as to what is the matter ?     - Update for KB891711 runs at startup-Windows ME: Should it? Hello: I notice that Security Update for Windows Me KB891711 runs at Startup as per Msconfig and Spybot's Startup List tool. It is also listed among the runnig processes. In my WU installation History, I see two successful installations of this update. One on March 12 and the other on April 14. For the Kb891711.exe , I see: File Version: 4.10.2223 Product Vesion: 4.10.2222 Should the Kb891711.exe be running at Startup? If not, is it safe to disable it in Msconfig?     - comctl32.dll My WindowsME is behaving rather erratically, and I wonder if it hasn't got to do with the captioned DLL. When clicking properties, my computer tells me that my version, 5.81, is for Windows 2000. About 50% of the time my machine halts on the initial login, not letting me click past username and login. (as an aside, I was told that I should have a username and password, else my saved logins and passwords for web browsers won't work) One of the time that it halted, the DLL listed was the only file running. So, I can do some more research, just thought maybe this was a softball for someone.     - WinMe Explorer grinds to a halt after many-many-many folder creations/deletions/renames Good Morning/Afternoon/Evening/Night I am constantly having to reboot WinMe here due to a high level of maintenance (rearrangement) activity on my 3 HDD's. I'm moving/copying folders and folders and folders and folders (!) from one place to another [to split things between this and a second PC] but after doing a lot of folder maintenance (creation/rename/deletion) Explorer just takes in commands (like a double-click to open a folder) and just sits there for up to 5 minutes doing nothing (to the external eye). A three-finger shuffle shows the Explorer task (with the folder name) as "not responding". The only solution that works after this is a reboot. And sometimes this reboot has to be a one-finger push (the reset button). Do I just have TOO many folders and files for WinMe? Current situation is: C: 3235 folders, 72036 files 20GB, FAT32 16K clusters D: 1408 folders, 48184 files 40GB, FAT32 32K clusters E: 352 folders, 27069 files 10GB, FAT32 8K clusters Anyone seen anything like this before in WinMe?     - Root Certificate Update Hi, I'm trying to install the Symantec Antivirus Corporate Edition with Program Version 9 but it prompt out an error message saying "Please install the Microsoft Root Certificate Update". When I run the Windows Update, it didn't display the Certificate for me to install. Previously, after i format my PC, I still can get this Root Certificate when I run the Windows update.     - Now it won't start ... I've been messing about with my son's machine and eventually managed to get rid of hundreds of trojans - it ran like a dream. Ha, thought I, now's the time to get rid of that silly password logon business - so I went to Control Panel and changed the password to blank. No problem. Now the bootup process stops when I see the desktop background - no icons, no taskbar. If I boot into Safe Mode, all I can see is the words Safe Mode in each corner - nothing to click on at all. So what can I do???? The other thing that's funny is that the internet dialup is weird - if I switch the machine on connected to the phone line, there's no dialling tone. The only way to get rid of this is to unplug the machine from the phone and reboot - which means I can't use the dialup. Hopefully these will be two separate problems and someone will be able to help with either or both.     - Prioritizing Start-Up Tasks in WinMe Is there any way of "prioritizong" or "ordering" the execution of the Start-Up Task list in WinMe? My Firewall, which is on the start-up list, only comes in AFTER my Clock Synchronizer. In the same way some "rogue" task could "get in" before the firewall becomes operational - I have an "always-on" wireless LAN connection to the Internet. Can anyone give a light on this situation?     - Ping Mike M Mike This is a follow-up to a problem with SR. As background I sought help 3 weeks ago because although set at ~300 MB, SR was at 1.7 GB. You advised to blow away the entire archive and start over, which I did as per your detailed instructions on June 6, 2005. 3 weeks later and although set at 383 MB, SR is now up to 853 MB, encompassing 2067 files, 5 folders. It only indicates two restore dates; June 6 - Restore operation, Manual checkpoint, System checkpoint June 14 - Windows update. As a separate issue, I note that KB891711 is still listed in CLOSE PROGRAM. I assume it's not related but thought I should disclose.     - Program Transfer Morning! I need some help again. I've recently purchased a new computer to replace an ailing one. I've copied over the files that I want from the old hard drive to the new one-no problems there. Here's my current problem: How do I/can I take a program that was installed on the hard drive when I purchased the old computer and install it on the new hard drive? I've got the old hard drive and I know how to hook it up to the new computer, but I'm not sure how to get the program transfered and installed on the new drive.     - Sound problem I just put a hard drive with ME already installed on it in a Gateway GP7-500. After several reboots to let the drivers all get installed, I wound up with a clean device manager. The sound card is Creative SoundBlaster Audio PCI (WDM). But no sound. If I go into Sound Properties under Audio there is no device present and everything is greyed out. I went under the Devices tab and confirmed that "Use Audio Features on this Device" was chosen. But still no joy. Of course in Device Manager it says "this device is working properly". I might point out that I put the original drive with Windows 98 on back in and the sound worked fine. I also went to the Gateway site and downloaded the specified drivers, uninstalled the card (drivers AND physically), put it back in a different slot and reinstalled it with the drivers from Gateway. Same exact results. Anyone got any ideas?     - downloading program I tried to download the poker academy pro program and got a pop up box saying that I had attempted an illegal operation and advised me to go to start,help and instructions on operating ms-dos programs. The computer would then crash and I'd have to reboot. emails to software provider finally suggested I reinstall windows. I am leery of doing this and would like some advise since it sounds tricky.     - Phantom DVD Drives in Win ME. Hello All, I have just done an install of Windows ME on a friends' computer and the DVD drive appears several times in both Device Manager and Windows Explorer. The computer has a single HDD which appears as device C:; a CD Re-Writer, which appears as device D:; and a single DVD-ROM drive which appears as devices E: to L:. These "Phantom Drives" (F: to L:) are all the DVD-ROM. The HDD and CD are on IDE-0; the DVD is on IDE-1 Master. Has anyone any suggestions as to why this might be, and how to rectify the problem? Mobo is Gigabyte GA-5AA with latest (F7b) BIOS.     - tahoma font I have WIndows ME on my laptop, and need to install a later version of tahoma font than the one already in the FONTS folder. I get the message "tahoma already installed, delete old version first", and cannot delete the existing version. Nothing happens when I try to delete it - the "delete" is just ignored. I understand that this may be because Windows does need to have tahoma for some reason and therefore does now alllow its deletion. Has anyone had or heard about this problem?     - Kernel 32 Caused a General Protection Fault and also MSN Errors ME, IE 6, Dell 4100 series. 20 gigabytes hard drive, 256 mb ram. While on a "Scientific American" website and while SpyDoctor was scanning for "infections," I received the following message in black on a white background box: Kernel 32 caused a general protection fault in module KRNL386.EXE at 0001.000075a8. My puter was frozen and ctrl-alt-del did nothing, so I had to use the emergency reboot button. I suspect this was caused by SpyDoctor, but I don't know. Upon start up, I also receive the following messages: "Internet Explorer Script Error Line 20 Char 1 Error object expected Code 0 url: http://t.msn.com/en-us/default.aspx?ver=7.0.0777&did=1 Do you want to continue running script on this page?" I click No several times, but the message reappears, sometimes with Line 7 instead of 20. Last time this happened (after the puter loaded), I had to click 7 times. This appears related to an msn site. Before I was getting that message, I would receive an MSN newsflash box, together with my hotmail entries, which I did not want to appear. So, I downloaded "Startup Cop" and deleted the MSN site (msnmsgr.exe) from appearing at start up. However, in order to access my hotmail, when I clicked on the little pawn in the Systray, the site automatically undeleted itself from the startup cop menu.     - Frozen or slow OEM logo at boot Good morning, afternoon or evening (as the case may). I am currently running the following: Win Me 4.90.3000, IE 5.50.4807.2300 with my trusty Outlook Express 5.50.4807.1700. My startups are ZA 2.6.362, Spyblocker 5.0 and AVG 7.0.308. The hardware is a Dell 4100 933mhz 256mb ram and 20gb generic IDE disk drive (type 47). As my subject header implies when I first boot-up the OEM logo stays up for about 45 seconds. Normally it flashes by so quickly it is barely seen. I have to admit my first action was to reset my computer after about 10 seconds approx. 5 times in row. While reading a manual the computer was able to complete the boot. I "googled" this group with the query "slow start +WinME". I tried some of the suggestions, namely msconfig and restore point with no success. During the boot process I noticed the cd-rom drive light would come on but I couldn't hear the "A" drive. I placed my boot floppy in the "A" drive but the computer would not read it. At that point I goggled "can't access floopy drive" generally (Sadly, I have to admit I derived some pleasure from the number of linux people who had the same problem) and on this group. I thought the problems were related so I checked bios and the floppy was there and the boot order is correct. After sleeping on it, I decided to check to see if there was a cd in the player. Grasping at that straw, I found I wasn't able to get it to open. Looking in explorer, I don't see the CD or the CD-RW drive although the A and C drive are there. The story is this: I worked in a community centre, and we use to hire an IT company to fix the computer. However since we got them for the cheapest price for the job. They have not been the best. There is a computer running WinME, and few days ago, the IT company came and fixed the computer for some reasons. We knew they used the ME machine. Just not, it doesn't want to boot up at all. We have already elimate it is not hardware failure. That's why I want to know how can I find out when is the last time the computer was turned on. I am a bit perplexed as these patches go back to 2002-3. Other online security checks I have run show that all my ports are stealthed...But I guess this might be a different issue... My questions now are: 1) Could it be that I'm already protected against these exploits? Could that online reading be erroneous? 2) Are there any risks to my system by installing patches such as these? Can they be uninstalled if they create problems?     - OT: ZAPro + XP or Me? Just an FYI for those using ZAPro, especially on an XP box........this is just in case it is happening with Me, as well. There is a situation when using OE that the True Vector portion of ZAPro (vsmon.exe) will begin using up all your cpu cycles, causing the machine to bog down severely or even lock up. Zone Labs is aware and promises a fix on the next update. Until then, the workaround is to disable "Email Protection" (really not needed if your AV scans email, which may be part of the problem). I performed the workaround and have not had the problem since.....must admit that it only happened a couple of times before and was cured with a reboot, temporarily. Anyway, if you are using ZAPro, latest version, and your machine is bogging or freezing, use a process viewer to see if <vsmon.exe> in running away with the processor, 50+%..........if so, use the workaround.     - TIF index.dat files I've been getting up to 12 TIF, Content.IEF subfolders with the usual random names. They each contain a single file named, index.dat, which resist manual deletion. I get a warning asking if I should delete the 'system files' and when I do delete them, Windows Explorer hangs for a couple minutes and then will close normally. Is this normal? I currently do not have an installation cd for this computer, and it would be a comfort to have one, just in case. From what I understand I must burn all the contents of the c:\windows\options\install to a cd.     - Removal of MSDOS memory resident program I downloaded a couple of stand alone, freware programs, I tried to get rid of them but...there was no unistall feature built into the programs and the programs were not listed under the add/remove program, their web sites support was 'pay for help'. I dragged the progams into my trash, empited the trash and restarted. The programs location under properties were listed as being on my desktop, (not a shortcut on the desktop). Now when I start my computer in safe mode and right hand click the 'my computer' logo and go>properties>performace...I get a message that says "Real mode driver or memory resident program loaded in config.sys or autoexec.bat file" and when I click for more info I get..."Drive X is using an MS-DOS mode file system, a driver listed in the Config.sys file" and also "Compatibility mode reduces overall system performace"...How do I get rid of this program. Using Norton 2004 antivirus with monthly updates. Using dialup with 56k internal modem with MSN as my ISP. I havenâ??t added any new applications recently or made major changes. Iâ??ve updated to MSN9 6 months ago, but always had a problem with explorer hanging when using IE & MSN explorer simultaneously plus with logging off of MSN the following error occurred from a dialog box: App Name: msn.exe App Ver: 9.10.11.1703 Mod/Ver: 2.40.4515.0 Offset: 00025ff9 Mod Name: oleaut32.dll Iâ??ve sent the generated report to msn many times, but no response. Finally, I sent e-mail to MSN Customer Support & they suggested the following via return e-mail. 1. Check system resources, amount of RAM, Performance, etc. 2. Possible file corruption in either IE or MSN. 3. Restore IE to previous version, then download latest version from Microsoft. 4. De-install MSN9 & reinstall from customer CD. 5. Problem should be resolved When I tried number 3, it didnâ??t remove/restore completely (OE6 did remove, no mail), so I thought to do a system restore, but when I open the control panel, NOTHING APPEARS. I opened in the safe mode & was able to repair IE6, then when re-starting the system the control panel opens OK, but seems like the only problem, other than the original complaint, is only OE6 is still missing. The last restore point is May 10, 2005, not sure if I want to go that far back. Any help would be appreciated, to restore OE6 & fix the original fault, as Iâ??m hesitant to continue with MSN Customer Support suggestion. Tag: runtime error 226 Tag: 269234

    - Restore original file application Hi, I tried to open a .db file in an application I am using. The system asked me what application I wanted to attach to this. As it was a .db file, I chose Excel. This is wrong, and now I cannot undo it!! It is looking for Sybase ODBC driver and every time I try to change the file from excel to this, I run into the same brick wall. I have a backup of the .db file as a zip file, and every time I try to extract it, it seems to find the old one and it comes up as excel.     - Active Desktop & Explorer Crash Out I have 4 win me machines in our enterprise. All of them seem to have timebombed, no so long ago, in that; a) Active desktop causes the machine to lock-up; b) Windows explorer, My computer etc. fail to run & then crash out; c) Anything explorer based seems to struggle to load. d) The clock freezes on load. The usual spybot checks (spybot S&D) & AV checks (Symantec) throw up nothing. My best solution would be to replace the OS....but I have no budget to undertake this at the moment.     - Quick Launch position I can't find this in the Knowledge Base. Quick Launch wants to stay on the right side of the taskbar against the notification area. I can't figure out how to drag it to the usual left side of the tray. I don't have restore points, possibly because I usually start with no startup items since I mainly capture video and I don't want extra programs interrupting captures. What are the circumstances when you see this error, for example which
application do you have running?

This error is being output by something you have running on your system,
most likely not part of Win Me, and quite possibly a Trojan. I would
start by thoroughly checking your system for unwanted malware using tools
such as AdAware, SpyBot S & D as well as your preferred antivirus
application.

it's a Visual C++ error... whatever program is using the M$ C++ Runtime
Library is causing it.

Are you getting that error when you open your browser ?

Then it's probably a "helper" or "toolbar" 3rd party app that's a bit
out of kilter.

Do you have "Spyware Doctor" installed?
If so, try uninstalling it and see whether the error message disappeared.
This program is supposed to have an issue with Win9x, especially Wn98 & ME.
