Without regsvr32 you can expect to see problems as without this file it will
be virtually impossible for many files to be correctly registered in the
registry.

You can extract a new copy of regsvr32.exe from the Win Me cab set.

Regsvr32.exe is contained in WIN_17.CAB of the Win Me cab set and can be
replaced using MSConfig | General | Extract File ... and following the
prompts. The "cab" files are in the Win9x folder on the Win Me CD and/or in a
sub-folder of Windows\Options. See MS KB129605 - "HOW TO: Extract Original
Compressed Windows Files" (http://support.microsoft.com?kbid=129605) for
details of how to extract files from the cab set. Regsvr32.exe belongs in
your windows\system folder.

Mike,
Newbie MVP query, is there a KB that lists what is contained in all the CAB
files?

Silj, Yes and not "newbie" at all. I'm sure we all develop our own methods
over time. In my case I've got a copy of the TechNet KB loaded on this box.
Not always up to date as I don't subscribe to TechNet so borrow a copy when it
comes my way. ;-) I could equally well use the MSDN KB but that only updates
quarterly, not that that is important for Win Me where KB articles aren't
changing that rapidly.

You can either locate the cab file containing a specific file using Explorer's
Search and put the file name in "containing text" or whatever and search the
cab set.

Or, as you ask, use the KB. Search using the file name and kbwinme and you
will get a number of hits one of which will be a folder listing for the cab
file in which the file is located.

Or, to see all folder listings for the Win Me cab search on "Windows
Millennium Edition Folder Listing" in the titles and you will find the 10 KBs
concerned (272253, 606, 608, 610, 612, 634, 636, 638, 639 & 640).

I always use the second method, that is search the KB for "regsrv32 kbwinme"
and then look at the Folder Listing KB it throws up.

Cheers,

Mike
